Research methods education is a challenging area for lecturers and students to engage with; students regularly demonstrate negative dispositions to research methods and lecturers struggle with issues such as curriculum marginalisation. However, employers increasingly demand graduates equipped with skills as researchers. Consequently, in university-based higher education, there has been investment to support research and good practice in this area. In contrast, limited attention has been paid to research methods education in college-based higher education. We report the outcomes of a small-scale national study designed to capture contemporary insights in research methods provision in college-based higher education. Drawing on data from two national surveys, we report student attitudes to, and experiences of, research methods and strategies employed by lecturers to teach and assess research methods. Students demonstrate positive attitudes to research methods, receptive to their research methods education and can see their applicability to 'real life' situations. However, the data demonstrate that the breadth of their research methods education is limited, potentially having implications for the development of skills such as critical evaluation of research outcomes, and students longer-term development as researchers. We conclude by highlighting future research directions and curriculum development to promote research methods education in college-based higher education.

Learning gain is a politicised concept within contemporary HE, and as such has been aligned with agendas of teaching excellence and learning outcomes but the extent to which it captures actual learning has yet to be clarified. Here, we report the outcomes of a learning gain study which examines how students' knowledge, skills and experiences as researchers develops throughout their studies. We examine data from a self-reporting survey administered across a university and college-based HE providers during students' second year of undergraduate study. The data highlight disciplinary differences in student engagement with research methods and the significance of perceived relevance of research methods to students' learning. These findings do have a bearing on the development of measures of learning gain as they are demonstrating the complexity of capturing student learning across disciplines. Our findings can be employed to develop a method of capturing learning gain that can be integrated into undergraduates' research methods education.

This paper reports on research into the operation of English further/higher education, with a focus on the role of partnerships in supporting the massification of higher education. The research draws on the bottom-up policy implementation tradition to provide analysis of the effects on partnerships of a quasi-marketised environment. The rationale and effects of market orientated policy are discussed with reference to empirical data from college staff and partnership managers. In employing the concept of the "street-level bureaucrat" as an agent of policy implementation, this research contributes to the interpretation of policy and partnership which has previously been unexplored within the further/higher education context. Conclusions are drawn with implications for the development of college higher education delivered in partnership.

The diversification of settings in which higher education is delivered has resulted in a growing proportion of lecturers entering teaching from professional backgrounds. This is a challenging transition as lecturers are rarely given the space to consider the implications of this move on their identities and practice styles. Writing is recognised as a powerful methodology through which individuals can make sense of experiences and conceptualise them in light of historical, theoretical and social perspectives. In this paper we consider the experiences of 10 college lecturers who used writing to explore this transition as part of a professional development initiative to promote their writing skills. They were providing higher education in further education colleges across South West England. This project ran over two years, involving a year-long professional development intervention and a subsequent evaluation. Over this time the lecturers produced a number of written pieces. We present the different styles and forms of writing used, and how these engaged with their emergent voices and growing sense of legitimacy. We highlight how writing can provide a reflexive medium and assist in the identification of developmental goals, something particularly valuable during professional transitions.

This paper draws on research conducted across an English higher education partnership to investigate the ways in which student voice was engaged in further education colleges offering university awards through partnership arrangements. Such collaborations are characterised by the marginal presence of higher education students in an environment that is dominated by further education structures, culture and practice. This provides challenges for both colleges and universities in developing higher education student identity and appropriate mechanisms of student engagement that comply with expectations within the higher education sector but also recognise the contextual situation of students within the college environment. It is argued that student partnership collaboration can be a positive driver in an increasingly marketised global environment, where student voice and feedback mechanisms are at the forefront of quality assessments and institutional reputation. An ideal types framework is suggested as a heuristic device for the evaluation of college strategies of engagement.

Epidemiologic and animal studies have shown that exposure to particulate matter air pollution (PM) is a risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. Whether PM-induced lung and systemic inflammation is involved in this process is not clear. We hypothesized that PM exposure causes lung and systemic inflammation, which in turn leads to vascular endothelial dysfunction, a key step in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. New Zealand White rabbits were exposed for 5 days (acute, total dose 8 mg) and 4 wk (chronic, total dose 16 rag) to either PM smaller than 10 [micro]m ([PM.sub.10]) or saline intratracheally. Lung inflammation was quantified by morphometry; systemic inflammation was assessed by white blood cell and platelet counts and serum interleukin (IL)-6, nitric oxide, and endothelin levels. Endothelial dysfunction was assessed by vascular response to acetylcholine (ACh) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP). [PM.sub.10] exposure increased lung macrophages (P < 0.02), macrophages containing particles (P < 0.001), and activated macrophages (P < 0.006). [PM.sub.10] increased serum IL-6 levels in the first 2 wk of exposure (P < 0.05) but not in weeks 3 or 4. [PM.sub.10] exposure reduced ACh-related relaxation of the carotid artery with both acute and chronic exposure, with no effect on SNP-induced vasodilatation. Serum IL-6 levels correlated with macrophages containing particles (P = 0.043) and ACh-induced vasodilatation (P = 0.014 at week 1, P = 0.021 at week 2). Exposure to [PM.sub.10] caused lung and systemic inflammation that were both associated with vascular endothelial dysfunction. Background: Internationally, the COVID‐19 pandemic severely curtailed access to hospital facilities for those awaiting elective/semi‐elective procedures. For allergic children in Ireland, already waiting up to 4 years for an elective oral food challenge (OFC), the restrictions signified indefinite delay. At the time of the initiative, there were approx 900 children on the Children's Health Ireland (CHI) waiting list. In July 2020, a project was facilitated by short‐term (6 weeks) access to an empty COVID stepdown facility built, in a hotel conference centre, commandeered by the Health Service Executive (HSE), Ireland. The aim of this study was to achieve the rapid roll‐out of an offsite OFC service, delivering high throughput of long waiting patients, while aligning with existing hospital policies and quality standards, international allergy guidelines and national social distancing standards. Methods: The working group engaged key stakeholders to rapidly develop an offsite OFC facility. Consultant paediatric allergists, consultant paediatricians, trainees and allergy clinical nurse specialists were seconded from other duties. The facility was already equipped with hospital beds, bedside monitors (BP, pulse and oxygen saturation) and bedside oxygen. All medication and supplies had to be brought from the base hospital. Daily onsite consultant anaesthetic cover was resourced and a resuscitation room equipped. Standardized food challenge protocols were created. Access to the onsite hotel chef facilitated food preparation. A risk register was established. Results: After 6 weeks of planning, the remote centre became operational on 7/9/2020, with the capacity of 27 OFC/day. 474 challenges were commenced: 465 (98%) were completed and 9 (2%) were inconclusive. 135 (29%) OFCs were positive, with 25 (5%) causing anaphylaxis. No child required advanced airway intervention. 8 children were transferred to the base hospital. The CHI allergy waiting list was reduced by almost 60% in only 24 days. Conclusions: Oral food challenges remain a vital tool in the care of allergic children, with their cost saving and quality‐of‐life benefits negatively affected by a delay in their delivery. This project has shown it is possible to have huge impacts on a waiting list efficiently, effectively and safely with good planning and staff buy‐in—even in a pandemic. Adoption of new, flexible and efficient models of service delivery will be important for healthcare delivery in the post–COVID‐19 era. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I describe a three-week analysis of newspaper articles from three major New Zealand newspapers relating to a statement made by New Zealand politician and Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei. Using a "figurative methodology" I argue that the emotionally-charged language used by the media to describe Turei during this period linked her to the affective figure of the welfare mother and, in the process, constituted her as deceitful, lazy and unfit to hold political office. I consider the welfare discourse featuring in articles that not only portrayed Turei negatively but also those that appeared to present Turei in a neutral or positive way. My interest is a consideration of the negative emotion implicit within such rhetoric that works to weaken sympathy for women dependent upon the state for support. I argue that the media reliance upon this language works to constitute welfare mothers in a specific and limiting way, and ultimately led to the end of Metiria Turei's political career. P-glycoprotein (pgp), a membrane efflux pump, is recognized to have an anti-apoptotic function. Internal tandem duplications (ITDs) of the Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) receptor are the most common mutations in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Both ITDs and pgp positivity confer an adverse clinical prognosis. FLT3 inhibitors induce variable apoptosis in cell lines transfected with FLT3 ITDs. We studied the effect of herbimycin A, AG1296 and PKC412 on primary AML blasts. All compounds showed significantly higher cell kill after 48-h incubation in samples with an ITD compared with wild type (Herbimicin P < 0.001; AG1296 P = 0.001, PKC412, P = 0.002). Pgp-positive samples were significantly less sensitive to herbimycin and AG1296 than pgp-negative samples, although neither molecule inhibited the efflux function of pgp. The concurrent incubation with the pgp inhibitor PSC833 resulted in an enhanced cell kill in 4/5 ITD pgp-positive samples versus two of nine ITD pgp-negative samples. PKC412 inhibited pgp function and induced cell death in FLT3 ITD/pgp-positive samples. We conclude that AML samples with a FLT3 ITD are more susceptible to these inhibitors than wild-type samples. However, the expression of pgp in cells with FLT3 ITDs can reduce their sensitivity to FLT3 inhibitors and therefore pgp expression should be assessed in clinical trials of FLT3 inhibitors.
