We use digital elevation models (DEMs) and ICESat‐2 data to study the filling and outflow from a large subglacial lake under Manson Icefield in the Canadian Arctic. When full, the lake is ∼17 × 3 km with an area of 52 km2. Early in 2021 the ice surface over the center of the lake sank by >140 m implying a subglacial outburst flood of ∼4 km3. Rapid outflow occurred over ∼30 days at an average rate of ∼1,500 m3s−1 resulting in the formation of a single ∼15 km subglacial outflow path detectable from post‐outflow surface depression. The shape of the surface depression, 600–800 m wide by 2–4 m deep, reflects the shape of the subglacial channel prior to closure. Downstream ice movement appears unaffected by the outflow. After outflow ends the surface depression persisted over weeks, apparently dependent on the difference between water and overburden pressures. Plain Language Summary: Using satellite observations, we discovered a large lake under the Manson Icefield in the Canadian Arctic. Early in 2021 the ice surface over the center of the lake sank by around 140 m implying a total subglacial water outflow of around 4 km3, the largest reported outside of Iceland and Antarctica. Most of this water drained from the subglacial lake within 30 days melting some of the ice along the outflow path. For the first time we map the position and size of the subglacial output channel between the downstream end of the lake and the ocean using post‐outflow surface depression as the ice sank downward to close the channel after the water outflow. These results help in understanding the ways in which the presence, movement, and volume of water beneath glaciers influence ice movement and climate related glacial ice loss. The introduction of OpenAI's ChatGPT has widely been considered a turning point for assessment in higher education. Whilst we find ourselves on the precipice of a profoundly disruptive technology, generative artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay. At present, institutions around the world are considering how best to respond to such new and emerging tools, ranging from outright bans to re-evaluating assessment strategies. In evaluating the extent of the problem that these tools pose to the marking of assessments, a study was designed to investigate marker accuracy in differentiating between scripts prepared by students and those produced using generative AI. A survey containing undergraduate reflective writing scripts and postgraduate extended essays was administered to markers at a medical school in Wales, UK. The markers were asked to assess the scripts on writing style and content, and to indicate whether they believed the scripts to have been produced by students or ChatGPT. Of the 34 markers recruited, only 23% and 19% were able to correctly identify the ChatGPT undergraduate and postgraduate scripts, respectively. A significant effect of suspected script authorship was found for script content, X²(4, n=34) = 10.41, p<0.05, suggesting that written content holds clues as to how markers assign authorship. We recommend consideration be given to how generative AI can be responsibly integrated into assessment strategies and expanding our definition of what constitutes academic misconduct in light of this new technology. Speckle tracking of ALOS PALSAR fine beam data from 2007-2011 are used to determine the surface motion of major ice masses on Baffin Island and Bylot Island in the southern Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Glacier velocities are low overall, with peaks of ~100 m [a.sup.-1] and means of ~20-60 m [a.sup.-1] common along the main trunk of many outlet glaciers. Peak velocities on Penny and Bylot Island ice caps tend to occur near the mid-sections of their primary outlet glaciers, while the fastest velocities on all other glaciers usually occur near their termini due to relatively large accumulation areas draining through narrow outlets. Estimates of ice thickness at the fronts of tidewater-terminating glaciers are combined with the velocity measurements to determine a regional dynamic discharge rate of between ~17 Mt [a.sup.-1] and ~108 Mt [a.sup.-1], with a mid-point estimate of ~55 Mt [a.sup.-1], revising downward previous approximations. These velocities can be used as inputs for glacier flow models, and provide a baseline dataset against which future changes in ice dynamics can be detected. Metformin toxicity following therapeutic use or overdose may result in metabolic acidosis with hyperlactatemia. This study aims to assess the relationship between serum lactate concentration, arterial pH, and ingested dose with severity of poisoning, and to identify if serum lactate concentration is a useful marker of severity in metformin toxicity. A retrospective study of telephone enquiries relating to metformin exposures to the National Poisons Information Service between 2010 and 2019 from hospitals in the United Kingdom. Six-hundred and thirty-seven cases were identified; 117 involved metformin only and 520 involved metformin with other drugs. The majority of cases involved acute (87%) and intentional (69%) exposures. There was a statistically significant difference in doses between the Poisoning Severity Scores, as well as between intentional and unintentional or therapeutic error doses (P < 0.0001). The distribution of cases for each Poisoning Severity Score differed between the metformin only and metformin with other drugs cases (P < 0.0001). Lactic acidosis was reported in 232 cases. Serum lactate concentration and arterial pH differed across Poisoning Severity Scores. Arterial pH inversely correlated with ingested dose (r=-0.3, P = 0.003), and serum lactate concentration positively correlated with ingested dose (r = 0.37, P < 0.0001). Serum lactate concentration and arterial pH did not correlate with each other. Twenty-five deaths were recorded, all following intentional overdoses. The dataset focuses mostly on acute, intentional overdoses. Increasing ingested metformin dose, a higher serum lactate concentration and worsening arterial pH were all associated with an unfavourable Poisoning Severity Score in patients in both metformin only and metformin with other drugs groups. As serum lactate concentration did not correlate with arterial pH, it represents an independent marker of poisoning severity. Data from the present study suggest that serum lactate concentration can be used to assess severity of poisoning in patients who have reportedly ingested metformin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning poses a public health challenge. The UK National Poisons Information Service (NPIS) provides advice to healthcare professionals via the online database, TOXBASE®, and a 24-hour telephone line. Our aim was to analyse all CO-related enquiries to the NPIS. Methods We analysed enquiries regarding unintentional CO exposure (1st July 2015-30th June 2019). Information on patient demographics, CO source and location, clinical features and poisoning severity was collected from telephone enquiries and TOXBASE accesses. Results 2970 unintentional non-fire-related CO exposures were reported. Exposures occurred commonly in the home (60%) with faulty boilers frequently implicated (27.4%). Although five fatalities were reported, 68.7% of patients experienced no or minor symptoms only (headache most frequently reported). Despite being the gold standard measurement, blood carboxyhaemoglobin concentration was only recorded in 25.6% patients, with no statistically significant correlation with severity. Conclusions Unintentional CO exposures in the UK commonly occur in domestic settings and although are generally of low severity, fatalities continue to occur. Carboxyhaemoglobin measurement is important to confirm exposure but further work is required to assess its validity as a prognostic indicator in CO exposure.
