Abstract

Background and Aims: Hypoalbuminemia, as defined by serum albumin (SA) levels ≤35 g/L, is associated to venous and arterial thrombosis in general population and in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. It is unknown if SA ≤35 g/L is also associated to portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in cirrhosis. Methods: Cirrhotic patients enrolled in the Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: Italian Venous thrombotic Events Registry (PRO-LIVER) study (n = 753), were followed-up for 2 years to assess the risk of PVT, that was diagnosed by Doppler ultrasonography. Child-Pugh classes, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, presence of hepatocellular carcinoma and laboratory variables including SA, D-dimer, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured at baseline. Results: SA ≤35 g/L was detected in 52% of patients. A logistic multivariate regression analysis showed that higher Child-Pugh class, hepatocellular carcinoma and thrombocytopenia were significantly associated to SA ≤35 g/L. In a subgroup of patients where data regarding hs-CRP and D-dimer were available, SA ≤35 g/L was inversely associated with hs-CRP and D-dimer. During the follow-up, a total of 61 patients experienced PVT. A Kaplan Meier survival analysis showed SA ≤35 g/L was associated to increased risk of PVT compared to SA >35 g/L (P = .005). A multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that male sex, lower platelet count, and SA ≤35 g/L remained associated to PVT after adjusting for confounding factors. Conclusion: Cirrhotic patients with SA ≤35 g/L are at higher risk of experiencing PVT compared to those with SA >35 g/L and could be considered as potential candidates to anticoagulant prophylaxis for PVT prevention.

18. Symmetry and monotonicity results for solutions of semilinear PDEs in sector-like domains

Abstract

In this manuscript we consider semilinear PDEs, with a convex nonlinearity, in a sector-like domain. Using cylindrical coordinates $(r, \theta, z)$, we investigate the shape of solutions whose derivative in $\theta$ vanishes at the boundary. We prove that any solution with Morse index less than two must be either independent of $\theta$ or strictly monotone with respect to $\theta$. In the special case of a planar domain, the result holds in a circular sector as well as in an annular, and it can also be extended to a rectangular domain. The corresponding problem in higher dimensions is also considered, as well as an extension to unbounded domains. The proof is based on a rotating-plane argument: a convenient manifold is introduced in order to avoid overlapping the domain with its reflected image in the case when its opening is larger than $\pi$.

22. School Wellbeing and Psychological Characteristics of Online Learning in Families of Children with and without Hearing Loss during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

This study investigated the psychological characteristics of online learning on Italian students with and without hearing loss (HL) and on their parents, who were forced into isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. An online survey collected information on socio-demographic data and opinions concerning online learning from 61 children (mean age 11; 25 males, 36 females), including 43 with HL and also from their parents; additionally, school wellbeing and anxiety were assessed. The results showed that, in both the student and parent groups, no significant effect of HL on school wellbeing and anxiety was found. Additionally, in parents, State Anxiety was significantly higher than Trait Anxiety, suggesting one possible impact of lockdown on psychological wellbeing. Differences due to HL were observed and discussed in correlation analyses. The Authors believe that this study is the first contribution to the psychological evaluation of the impact of online learning on families with hearing-impaired children, from the perspective of a successful, inclusive didactic.

Abstract

We prove a rigidity result for the anisotropic Laplacian. More precisely, the domain of the problem is bounded by an unknown surface supporting a Dirichlet condition together with a Neumann-type condition which is not translation-invariant. Using a comparison argument, we show that the domain is in fact a Wulff shape. We also consider the more general case when the unknown surface is required to have its boundary on a given conical surface: in such a case, the domain of the problem is bounded by the unknown surface and by a portion of the given conical surface, which supports a homogeneous Neumann condition. We prove that the unknown surface lies on the boundary of a Wulff shape.

Abstract

In this paper, we prove foliated Schwarz symmetry of solutions to a cooperatively coupled system of equations involving nonlocal operators. Here, the class of nonlocal operators covers in particular the case of the fractional Laplacian. Moreover, we give an explicit example of a nonlocal nonlinear system, in which our result can be applied.
