The process of anion intercalation in graphite and its reversibility plays a crucial role in the next generation energy-storage devices. Herein the reaction mechanism of the aluminum graphite dual ion cell by operando X-ray scattering from small angles to wide angles is investigated. The staging behavior of the graphite intercalation compound (GIC) formation, its phase transitions, and its reversible process are observed for the first time by directly measuring the repeated intercalation distance, along with the microporosity of the cathode graphite. The investigation demonstrates complete reversibility of the electrochemical intercalation process, alongside nano- and micro-structural reorganization of natural graphite induced by intercalation. This work represents a new insight into thermodynamic aspects taking place during intermediate phase transitions in the GIC formation.

This work aims to study the insertion of AlCl_4^- anion in the crystalline structure of oriented pyrolytic graphite (PG) at the point of view of the anion itself. The electronic and atomic structures of the anion at different intercalation stages are studied. In particular double-edge (bicolor) X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Al and Cl K-edges is carried out, highlighting a contraction of the anion bonding at the highest intercalation degree obtained electrochemically (stage 3), while the electronic population changes for both the edges upon cycle.

Understanding the LiMnPO4/MnPO4 phase transition is of great interest in order to further improve the electrochemical performance of this cathode material. Since most of the previously published literature deals with characterization of chemically delithiated Lix MnPO4, the aim of this study is to compare and study the composition and structure of the different phases that are generated upon chemical delithiation of LixMnPO4. Bare and carboncoated lithium manganese phos-phates are prepared via a combined coprecipitation-calcination method. Partial delithiation to two different degrees of delithiation Lix MnPO4 (x = 0.24/0.23 and 0.45) for carbon-coated and/or bare materials is achieved using an excess of nitro-nium tetrafluoroborate in acetonitrile. The effect of carboncoating has been also considered. Standard materials characterization with XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) and ICPOES (Inductive Coupled Plasma spectrometry and Optical Emission Spectroscopy) analysis are in accordance with literature data, but further cerimetric analysis revealed serious deviations, showing differences in the degree of delithiation to the average degree of oxidation. A structural characterization of the atomic and electronic local structure of the materials is also ob-tained using XAS (X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy) technique.

Herein we report on a detailed investigation of the irreversible capacity in the first cycle of pyrolytic graphite electrodes in aluminum batteries employing 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride:aluminum trichloride (EMIMCl:AlCl3) as electrolyte. The reaction mechanism, involving the intercalation of AlCl4 in graphite, has been fully characterized by correlating the micro/nanostructural modification to the electrochemical performance. To achieve this aim a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and computed tomography (CT) has been used. The reported results evidence that the irreversibility is caused by a very large decrease in the porosity, which consequently leads to microstructural changes resulting in the trapping of ions in the graphite. A powerful characterization methodology is established, which can also be applied more generally to carbon-based energy-related materials. Introduction

Pump-and-probe photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) with femtosecond pulsed sources opens new perspectives in the investigation of the ultrafast dynamics of physical and chemical processes at the surfaces and interfaces of solids. Nevertheless, for very intense photon pulses a large number of photoelectrons are simultaneously emitted and their mutual Coulomb repulsion is sufficiently strong to significantly modify their trajectory and kinetic energy. This phenomenon, referred as space-charge effect, determines a broadening and shift in energy for the typical PES structures and a dramatic loss of energy resolution. In this article we examine the effects of space charge in PES with a particular focus on time-resolved hard X-ray (~10 keV) experiments. The trajectory of the electrons photoemitted from pure Cu in a hard X-ray PES experiment has been reproduced through $N$-body simulations and the broadening of the photoemission core-level peaks has been monitored as a function of various parameters (photons per pulse, linear dimension of the photon spot, photon energy). The energy broadening results directly proportional to the number $N$ of electrons emitted per pulse (mainly represented by secondary electrons) and inversely proportional to the linear dimension $a$ of the photon spot on the sample surface, in agreement with the literature data about ultraviolet and soft X-ray experiments. The evolution in time of the energy broadening during the flight of the photoelectrons is also studied. Despite its detrimental consequences on the energy spectra, we found that space charge has negligible effects on the momentum distribution of photoelectrons and a momentum broadening is not expected to affect angle-resolved experiments. Strategy to reduce the energy broadening and the feasibility of hard X-ray PES experiments at the new free-electron laser facilities are discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 2 tables, 8 figures
