Abstract

This international collection of essays brings together two important and growing areas of research and debate: the sociology of gender relations in the workplace and the expanding body of interdisciplinary research into the design of computer systems. Feminists, computer scientists, and sociologists explore the impact of gender relations upon computer system design. An introduction (Green, Owen, Pain) is followed by two chapters in section 1 that set the context: "Human-Centred Systems Design: A Review of Trends within the Broader Systems Development Context" (Pain et al.) and "Establishing Gender Perspectives on Information Technology: Problems, Issues, and Opportunities" (Henwood). Section II contains three chapters on gender perspectives in computer systems development:"Design of Information Systems: Things Versus People" (Bodker, Greenbaum); "A Separate Reality: Science, Technology, and Masculinity" (Murray); and "The Expert Systems Debate: A Gender Perspective" (Adam, Bruce). Two chapters are found in section III on gender, clerical work, and information technology: "Information Technology and Occupational Restructuring in the Office" (Liff) and "From the Word Processor to the Micro: Gender Issues in the Development of Information Technology in the Office" (Webster). Section IV on new initiatives in Europe, particularly Scandinavia, is comprised of four chapters: "'City Libraries': Human-Centred Opportunities for Women?" (Green, Owen, Pain); "Strengths and Weaknesses of Participation: Learning by Doing in Local Government" (Hales, O'Hara); "The Universes of Discourse for Education and Action/Research" (de Cindio, Simone); and "Trade Unions, Information Technology, and Equal Opportunities in Sweden" (Avner). In particular it focuses on the ways in which friendship relations are transformed and reconfigured through new mobile phone technologies; and how 'doing' friendship on the mobile uncovers significant insight into contemporary youth cultures of masculinity and femininity. Although the majority of young people of the 'multimedia generation' have fully engaged with the mobile telephony revolution, there is no work which grounds mobile phone use within theoretical perspectives on friendship, in particular in different peer group cultures. We draw upon new empirical data from research in the North East of England to explore young people's perceptions and uses of mobile phones. The resulting narratives reveal interesting gendered practices of connectivity and sociability amongst the sample group and important dimensions of developing peer group identities, including diverse performance of femininities and masculinities. Building on these ideas, this paper aims to make a theoretical contribution to debates on friendship and mobile phone use. In particular, we argue for the need to ground the empirical study of young people and mobile phones more firmly within social theory: a development that contributes towards a sharpening of theoretical perspectives on mobile technologies. Abstract

This paper explores the role and importance of kinship within the lives of 14 working class women as they seek to make sense of motherhood and their own self-identity as a young mother. Within late modernity, numerous discourses suggest that kin networks and the role and importance of kinship are in decline as `the family' changes and adapts. Indeed, the idea of extended family support and networking is frequently viewed as a historically cozy image rather than an everyday reality as we enter the twenty-first century. However, this paper demonstrates that the situation is far from straightforward. The young mothers' discourses and everyday experiences remain firmly grounded in relations of class, gender and the locality within which they live. Hence, although many of the young women are increasingly individualised, self-reflexive actors seeking to make sense of intimate relations and kinship in an ontologically insecure world, kin networks, especially female kinship continue to play a pivotal role in their lives -- practically, socially and emotionally. Indeed, female kinship is closely interwoven with their self-identity as a caring and capable mother.

37. Mammography screening: views from women and primary care physicians in Crete

Abstract

Abstract Background Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women and a leading cause of death from cancer in women in Europe. Although breast cancer incidence is on the rise worldwide, breast cancer mortality over the past 25 years has been stable or decreasing in some countries and a fall in breast cancer mortality rates in most European countries in the 1990s was reported by several studies, in contrast, in Greece have not reported these favourable trends. In Greece, the age-standardised incidence and mortality rate for breast cancer per 100.000 in 2006 was 81,8 and 21,7 and although it is lower than most other countries in Europe, the fall in breast cancer mortality that observed has not been as great as in other European countries. There is no national strategy for screening in this country. This study reports on the use of mammography among middle-aged women in rural Crete and investigates barriers to mammography screening encountered by women and their primary care physicians. Methods Design: Semi-structured individual interviews. Setting and participants: Thirty women between 45–65 years of age, with a mean age of 54,6 years, and standard deviation 6,8 from rural areas of Crete and 28 qualified primary care physicians, with a mean age of 44,7 years and standard deviation 7,0 serving this rural population. Main outcome measure: Qualitative thematic analysis. Results Most women identified several reasons for not using mammography. These included poor knowledge of the benefits and indications for mammography screening, fear of pain during the procedure, fear of a serious diagnosis, embarrassment, stress while anticipating the results, cost and lack of physician recommendation. Physicians identified difficulties in scheduling an appointment as one reason women did not use mammography and both women and physicians identified distance from the screening site, transportation problems and the absence of symptoms as reasons for non-use. Conclusion Women are inhibited from participating in mammography screening in rural Crete. The provision of more accessible screening services may improve this. However physician recommendation is important in overcoming women's inhibitions. Primary care physicians serving rural areas need to be aware of barriers preventing women from attending mammography screening and provide women with information and advice in a sensitive way so women can make informed decisions regarding breast caner screening.

42. Gender in the design of the digital city of Amsterdam

Abstract

This chapter analyses the social shaping of the Digital City of Amsterdam – ‘De Digitale Stad’ (DDS) – from a gender perspective. It aims to contribute to an understanding of the overwhelming dominance (more than 90 per cent) of male DDS users, a fact which is more than surprising given that the designers had high ideals about making the Internet accessible to a wider public. The analysis is rooted in the social constructivist tradition in technology studies. As such, it analyses technology as a product of social, political and cultural negotiations among designers, policy-makers and other social groups. The concept of ‘genderscript’ is used to examine the gender relations embedded in the design of DDS. In our analysis we show that the design process was gendered at three levels: the structural, the symbolical and the identity level. As the design-process was highly informal and no conscious attempt was made to focus on specific user-groups, the designers unconsciously projected their own masculine-biased interests on the future user. Thus they affected the choices concerning the goals, content and interface of DDS, providing it with a masculine genderscript.
