Abstract

A group of EUV lines of H- and He-like ions of C provides excellent wavelength calibrations for a position-sensitive multichannel detector at a high-resolution spectrograph. We have exploited this setting for a series of spectra of highly charged Eu ions recorded at the Livermore SuperEBIT electron beam ion trap. A variation in the electron beam energy results in spectra with correspondingly staggered highest Eu ion charge states ranging from Na- through to Ni-like Eu ions. A number of spectral features can be identified from the literature, but the majority of line identifications need guidance from computations of simulated spectra on the basis of collisional-radiative models. For ions with more than two electrons in the valence shell, the typical computational results are of a markedly lower accuracy. We have applied the Flexible Atomic Code (FAC), which is capable of handling all our measured ions with reasonable accuracy. We look into the systematics of the deviation of the computed transition energies from the measured ones as a function of the electron number.

Abstract

The X-ray binary system Cygnus X-3 (4U 2030+40, V1521 Cyg) is luminous but enigmatic owing to the high intervening absorption. High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy uniquely probes the dynamics of the photoionized gas in the system. In this Letter, we report on an observation of Cyg X-3 with the XRISM/Resolve spectrometer, which provides unprecedented spectral resolution and sensitivity in the 2–10 keV band. We detect multiple kinematic and ionization components in absorption and emission whose superposition leads to complex line profiles, including strong P Cygni profiles on resonance lines. The prominent Fe xxv He α and Fe xxvi Ly α emission complexes are clearly resolved into their characteristic fine-structure transitions. Self-consistent photoionization modeling allows us to disentangle the absorption and emission components and measure the Doppler velocity of these components as a function of binary orbital phase. We find a significantly higher velocity amplitude for the emission lines than for the absorption lines. The absorption lines generally appear blueshifted by ∼−500–600 km s ^−1 . We show that the wind decomposes naturally into a relatively smooth and large-scale component, perhaps associated with the background wind itself, plus a turbulent, denser structure located close to the compact object in its orbit.

Abstract

We present an analysis of the first two XRISM/Resolve spectra of the well-known Seyfert-1.5 active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 4151, obtained in 2023 December. Our work focuses on the nature of the narrow Fe K _α emission line at 6.4 keV, the strongest and most common X-ray line observed in AGN. The total line is found to consist of three components. Even the narrowest component of the line is resolved with evident Fe K _α _,1 (6.404 keV) and K _α _,2 (6.391 keV) contributions in a 2:1 flux ratio, fully consistent with neutral gas with negligible bulk velocity. Subject to the limitations of our models, the narrowest and intermediate-width components are consistent with emission from optically thin gas, suggesting that they arise in a disk atmosphere and/or wind. Modeling the three line components in terms of Keplerian broadening, they are readily associated with (1) the inner wall of the “torus,” (2) the innermost optical “broad-line region” (or “X-ray BLR”), and (3) a region with a radius of r ≃ 100 GM / c ^2 that may signal a warp in the accretion disk. Viable alternative explanations of the broadest component include a fast-wind component and/or scattering; however, we find evidence of variability in the narrow Fe K _α line complex on timescales consistent with small radii. The best-fit models are statistically superior to simple Voigt functions, but when fit with Voigt profiles the time-averaged lines are consistent with a projected velocity broadening of FWHM $\,=\,{1600}_{-200}^{+400}\,\mathrm{km}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1}$ . Overall, the resolution and sensitivity of XRISM show that the narrow Fe K line in AGN is an effective probe of all key parts of the accretion flow, as it is currently understood. We discuss the implications of these findings for our understanding of AGN accretion, future studies with XRISM, and X-ray-based black hole mass measurements.

Abstract

A multitude of weaker Fe IX lines have been predicted in the vicinity of the strong 171 Å line that dominates the spectra of many astrophysical and laboratory sources. Some of these weaker lines have only recently been identified in the laboratory, albeit some only tentatively. Here, we present measurements on the Livermore EBIT-I electron beam ion trap that span the region from 170.0 to 173.6 Å, which surrounds the 171 Å line. The measurements stepped through electron beam energy to determine the charge state of iron associated with each observed feature. Moreover, we have minimized the presence of oxygen in the trap, because oxygen lines obscured possible Fe IX lines in past measurements and prevented their identification. Our measurement confirms formerly tentative identifications and adds several new assignments.

Abstract

The Fe IX spectrum features two lines in the extreme ultraviolet whose ratio has been rated among the best density diagnostics in the solar spectrum. One line is an E1-allowed intercombination transition at 244.909 Å, the other an E1-forbidden M2 transition at 241.739 Å. Employing a medium and a high resolution spectrometer at the Livermore EBIT-I electron beam ion trap, we have observed the line pair in the laboratory for the first time. Using a CHIANTI model computation, the observed line ratio yields a value of the electron density that is compatible with typical densities in our device.

We report measurements of electron-impact excitation cross sections for the strong K-shell n = 2 -> 1 transitions in S XV, using the LLNL EBIT-I electron beam ion trap, two crystal spectrometers, and the EBIT Calorimeter Spectrometer. The cross sections are determined by direct normalization to the well-known cross sections of radiative electron capture, measured simultaneously. Using contemporaneous polarization measurements with the two crystal spectrometers, whose dispersion planes are oriented parallel and perpendicular to the electron beam direction, the polarization of the direct excitation line emission is determined, and in turn the isotropic total cross sections are extracted. We further experimentally investigate various line-formation mechanisms, finding that radiative cascades and collisional inner-shell ionization dominate the degree of linear polarization and total line emission cross sections of the forbidden line, z.

Abstract

For more than 40 years, most astrophysical observations and laboratory studies of two key soft x-ray diagnostic 2p - 3d transitions, 3C and 3D, in Fe XVII ions found oscillator strength rations f(3C)/f(3D) disagreeing with theory, but uncertainties had precluded definitive statements on this much studied conundrum. Here, we resonantly excite these lines using synchrotron radiation at PETRA III, and reach, at a millionfold lower photon intensities, a 10 times higher spectral resolution, and 3 times smaller uncertainty than earlier work. Our final result of f(3C)/f(3D) = 3.09(8)(6) supports many of the earlier clean astrophysical and laboratory observations, while departing by five sigmas from our own newest large-scale ab initio calculations, and excluding all proposed explanations, including those invoking nonlinear effects and population transfers.

10. Laboratory Measurements of X-ray Emission from Highly Charged Argon Ions

Abstract

Uncertainties in atomic models will introduce noticeable additional systematics in calculating the flux of weak dielectronic recombination (DR) satellite lines, affecting the detection and flux measurements of other weak spectral lines. One important example is the Ar xvii Heβ DR, which is expected to be present in emission from the hot intracluster medium of galaxy clusters and could impact measurements of the flux of the 3.5 keV line that has been suggested as a secondary emission from a dark matter interaction. We perform a set of experiments using the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's electron beam ion trap (EBIT-I) and the X-ray Spectrometer quantum calorimeter (XRS/EBIT) to test the Ar xvii Heβ DR origin of the 3.5 keV line. We measured the X-ray emission following resonant DR onto helium-like and lithium-like Argon using EBIT-I's Maxwellian simulator mode at a simulated electron temperature of T(e) = 1.74 keV. The measured flux of the Ar xvii Heβ DR lined is too weak to account for the flux in the 3.5 keV line, assuming reasonable plasma parameters. We, therefore, rule out Ar xvii Heβ DR as a significant contributor to the 3.5 keV line. A comprehensive comparison between the atomic theory and the EBIT experiment results is also provided.

Abstract

We report the measurements of the n = 3 → n = 2 L-shell X-ray transitions of neon-like Eu53+. These include all seven allowed electric dipole (E1) transitions, five electric quadrupole (E2) transitions, and one magnetic quadrupole (M2) transition. The measurements were carried out at the EBIT-I electron beam ion trap facility at Livermore using an X-ray calorimeter. The measured values agree with many-body perturbation theory calculations within the experimental uncertainties. This includes the transitions that involve a 2s electron and that are, therefore, strongly affected by quantum electrodynamical effects.

17. Ion energy distribution in an electron beam ion trap inferred from simulations of the trapped ion cloud

Abstract

We have inferred the energy distribution of trapped ions in an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) from simulations of the spatial distribution of Fe^{13+} ions and a comparison with measured visible light images of the ion cloud. We simulated the cloud of Fe^{13+} ions by computing ion trajectories in the EBIT for different ion energy distributions used to initialize the trajectories. We then performed a least-squares fit to infer the ion energy distribution that best reproduced the measured ion cloud. These best-fit distributions were typically non-Maxwellian. For electron beam energies of 395-475 eV and electron beam currents of 1-9 mA, we find that the average ion energy is in the range of 10-300 eV. We also find that the average ion energy increases with increasing beam current approximately as 〈E〉≈25I_{e}eV, where I_{e} is the electron beam current in mA. We have also compared our results to Maxwell-Boltzmann-distribution ion clouds. We find that our best-fit non-thermal distributions have an 〈E〉 that is less than half that of the T from the best-fit Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions (〈E〉/q)/T=0.41±0.05.

Abstract

We report measurements of electron-impact excitation cross sections for the strong K-shell n=2-1 transitions in S XV using the LLNL EBIT-I electron beam ion trap, two crystal spectrometers, and the EBIT Calorimeter Spectrometer. The cross sections are determined by direct normalization to the well known cross sections of radiative electron capture, measured simultaneously. Using contemporaneous polarization measurements with the two crystal spectrometers, whose dispersion planes are oriented parallel and perpendicular to the electron beam direction, the polarization of the direct excitation line emission is determined, and in turn the isotropic total cross sections are extracted. We further experimentally investigate various line-formation mechanisms, finding that radiative cascades and collisional inner-shell ionization dominate the degree of linear polarization and total line-emission cross sections of the forbidden line $z$., 16 Pages, 9 Figures, published in ApJ

Abstract

The Resolve detector system is calibrated on the ground in three stages: at the focal plane assembly, at the calorimeter spectrometer insert, and at the full instrument level. We have just completed the first two stages and have measured the detailed core line shape and spectral redistribution functions, by pixel, and as a function of energy. In addition, we have measured the energy scale function that translates instrument units into spectral units, by pixel, and as a function of detector heat sink temperature. We discuss the results of the Resolve calibration program to date as well as implications for the calibration of future high resolution x-ray spectrometers.

Abstract

We demonstrate a widely applicable technique to absolutely calibrate the energy scale of x-ray spectra with experimentally well-known and accurately calculable transitions of highly charged ions, allowing us to measure the K-shell Rydberg spectrum of molecular O_{2} with 8 meV uncertainty. We reveal a systematic ∼450 meV shift from previous literature values, and settle an extraordinary discrepancy between astrophysical and laboratory measurements of neutral atomic oxygen, the latter being calibrated against the aforementioned O_{2} literature values. Because of the widespread use of such, now deprecated, references, our method impacts on many branches of x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, it potentially reduces absolute uncertainties there to below the meV level.

Abstract

We resonantly excite the $K$ series of O$^{5+}$ and O$^{6+}$ up to principal quantum number $n=11$ with monochromatic x rays, producing $K$-shell holes, and observe their relaxation by soft-x-ray emission. Some photoabsorption resonances of O$^{5+}$ reveal strong two-electron--one-photon (TEOP) transitions. We find that for the $[(1s\,2s)_1\,5p_{3/2}]_{3/2;1/2}$ states, TEOP relaxation is by far stronger than the radiative decay and competes with the usually much faster Auger decay path. This enhanced TEOP decay arises from a strong correlation with the near-degenerate upper states $[(1s\,2p_{3/2})_1\,4s]_{3/2;1/2}$ of a Li-like satellite blend of the He-like $K\alpha$ transition. Even in three-electron systems, TEOP transitions can play a dominant role, and the present results should guide further research on the ubiquitous and abundant many-electron ions where electronic energy degeneracies are far more common and configuration mixing is stronger., Comment: Published in PRA

Abstract

Short pulse laser heated buried layers experiments have been performed on the Orion laser facility to study the time-resolved emission characteristics of plasmas with mass densities ≥ 1 g/cc and electron temperatures > 500 eV. Our streak camera measurements focused on the K-shell emission lines of He-like and H-like aluminum from a buried aluminum layer. The data were analyzed by comparison to synthetic spectra generated with the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) radiation transfer code Cretin, which yielded maximum temperatures of nearly 800 eV at near solid density. The time precise history of the temperature evolution was reproduced with a 1-D radiation hydrodynamic code; however, the known effect of lateral transport of energy out of the focal spot made exacting agree with theory difficult. Thus, we have observed densities of ≥ 1 g/cc and temperatures of > 500 eV using the 1-D analysis, which supports the idea that the aluminum plasma is locally hotter than inferred from our spatially integrating measurements and that modeling requires the inclusion of 2-dimensional effects.

Abstract

Based on laboratory data from the Lawrence Livermore EBIT-I electron beam ion trap and calculations using the relativistic multi-reference Moller-Plesset (MRMP) perturbation theory approach, we identify L-shell transitions of M-shell iron ions in emission spectra of the nearby stars Capella and Procyon. These lines are weaker than the well known, prominent lines from Fe XVII. However, they need to be taken into account when modeling the spectra, especially of cool stars.

Abstract

Physical review letters 124(22), 225001 (1-7) (2020). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.124.225001, For more than 40 years, most astrophysical observations and laboratory studies of two key soft x-ray diagnostic $2p$−$3d$ transitions, $3C$ and $3D$, in Fe XVII ions found oscillator strength ratios $f(3C)$/$f(3D)$ disagreeing with theory, but uncertainties had precluded definitive statements on this much studied conundrum. Here, we resonantly excite these lines using synchrotron radiation at PETRA III, and reach, at a millionfold lower photon intensities, a 10 times higher spectral resolution, and 3 times smaller uncertainty than earlier work. Our final result of $f(3C)$/$f(3D)$=3.09(8)(6) supports many of the earlier clean astrophysical and laboratory observations, while departing by five sigmas from our own newest large-scale ab initio calculations, and excluding all proposed explanations, including those invoking nonlinear effects and population transfers., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Abstract

Calculations that achieve spectroscopic accuracy, i.e., at the level of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ or better, are rare and typically restricted to few-electron systems. Here we present high-resolution grating spectrometer measurements of 11 $2{s}_{1/2}\text{\ensuremath{-}}2{p}_{3/2}$ transitions in neonlike ${\mathrm{Ge}}^{22+}$ that distinguish between two different implementations of the many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) method, including our own. The measurements show that our implementation of the MBPT method consistently achieves spectroscopic accuracy at the ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ level for all of the measured lines. Moreover, our calculations improve the ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ accuracy of prior MBPT calculations by an order of magnitude and allow us to make greatly improved predictions of the location of potential photopumped lines in ${\mathrm{Ge}}^{22+}$. The measurements also improve on previous measurements of $2{s}_{1/2}\text{\ensuremath{-}}2{p}_{3/2}$ transitions in fluorinelike ${\mathrm{Ge}}^{23+}$ and oxygenlike ${\mathrm{Ge}}^{24+}$. Measurements of $n=2\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{to}\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}n=3$ transitions in ${\mathrm{Al}}^{7+}$, ${\mathrm{Al}}^{8+}$, and ${\mathrm{Al}}^{9+}$ are used to support our measurement accuracy at the ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ level.

Abstract

We present measurements of the H-like potassium (K xix) X-ray spectrum and its He-like (K xviii) satellite lines, which are situated in the wavelength region between 3.34 and 3.39 Å, which has been of interest for the detection of dark matter. The measurements were taken with a high-resolution X-ray spectrometer from targets irradiated by a long-pulse (2 ns) beam from the Orion laser facility. We obtain experimental wavelength values of dielectronic recombination satellite lines and show that the ratio of the Lyα lines and their dielectronic satellite lines can be used to estimate the electron temperature, which in our case was about 1.5 ± 0.3 keV.

Abstract

Many resonant photo-pumped X-ray laser schemes that use a strong pump line such as Ly-α or He-α to populate the upper laser state of a separate lasing material have been proposed over the last four decades but none have been demonstrated. As a first step to creating a photo-pumped X-ray laser we decided to reinvestigate some of these schemes at the Orion laser facility with the goal to demonstrate enhanced fluorescence as a first step toward creating a laser. In particular we look at using the Ly-α or He-α K lines to pump the 1s – 3p and 4p transitions in H-like Cl and see fluorescence on the 4f -3d line at 65 Å and the 3d – 2p line at 23 Å. Preliminary experiments are presented that show a modest enhancement of 40% on the 3d-2p line. As an alternative we also look at enhancing the 2p – 2s line in Ne-like Ge at 65Å using the Ly-α Mg line to photo-pump the 2s – 3p line of Ne-like Ge. Calculations are presented that suggest modest enhancements of 2.5 and recent experiments will be presented that show emission from a Ge plasma pumped by the Ly-α Mg line.

Abstract

The shifts of the $1s3p{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{1}{P}_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}1{s}^{2}{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{1}{S}_{0}$ He-$\ensuremath{\beta}$ transition of ${\mathrm{Cl}}^{15+}$ were measured in hot ($\ensuremath{\ge}600$ eV), dense (1--2 g/${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$) plasmas generated by a (66--151)-J short-pulse laser beam at the Orion laser facility. The subpicosecond laser beam irradiated optically thin, KCl microdot targets buried in layers of plastic. The measured red shifts ranged from $4.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.1$ eV for unshocked to $5.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.2$ eV for shocked targets. These values are significantly smaller than recent predictions from a self-consistent-field ion-sphere model.

Abstract

A NASA-built x-ray microcalorimeter spectrometer has been installed on the MST facility at the Wisconsin Plasma Physics Laboratory and has recorded x-ray photons emitted by impurity ions of aluminum in a majority deuterium plasma. Much of the x-ray microcalorimeter development has been driven by the needs of astrophysics missions, where imaging arrays with few-eV spectral resolution are required. The goal of our project is to adapt these single-photon-counting microcalorimeters for magnetic fusion energy research and demonstrate the value of such measurements for fusion science. Microcalorimeter spectrometers combine the best characteristics of the x-ray instrumentation currently available on fusion devices: high spectral resolution similar to an x-ray crystal spectrometer and the broadband coverage of an x-ray pulse height analysis system. Fusion experiments are increasingly employing high-Z plasma-facing components and require measurement of the concentration of all impurity ion species in the plasma. This diagnostic has the capability to satisfy this need for multi-species impurity ion data and will also contribute to measurements of impurity ion temperature and flow velocity, Zeff, and electron density. Here, we introduce x-ray microcalorimeter detectors and discuss the diagnostic capability for magnetic fusion energy experiments. We describe our experimental setup and spectrometer operation approach at MST, and we present the results from an initial measurement campaign.

Abstract

During the past few years, the Orion high-resolution x-ray spectrometers have been successful tools for measuring x-ray spectra from plasmas generated in the Orion laser facility. Duplicate spectrometers also operate successfully at the Livermore EBIT-I and SuperEBIT electron beam ion traps for measuring x-ray polarization. We have recently implemented very high-quality, optically bonded, spherically bent quartz crystals to remove the structure in the x-ray image that had been observed in earlier measurements. The structure had been caused by focusing defects and limited the accuracy of our measurements. We present before and after images that show a drastic improvement. We, furthermore, have implemented a spherically bent potassium acid phthalate (KAP) crystal on one of our spectrometers. The KAP crystal was prepared in a similar fashion, and we present measurements of the N Ly-β and Ne Lyβ lines taken in first- and second-order reflections at 600 and 1200 eV, respectively. These measurements confirm that KAP crystals can be produced at a quality suitable for extending the spectral coverage to wavelengths longer than those accessible by different quartz crystals, especially those that cover the astrophysically important lines of iron.

Abstract

We present absolute throughput analysis of several crystals for the Orion High-REsolution X-ray (OHREX) imaging crystal spectrometer using ray tracing and experimental measurements. The OHREX spectrometer is a high-resolution x-ray spectrometer designed to measure spectral line shapes at the Orion laser facility. The spectrometer is fielded with up to two spherical crystals simultaneously covering two independent spectral ranges. Each crystal has a nominal radius of curvature of R = 67.2 cm and is fielded at a nominal Bragg angle of 51.3°. To cover different bands of interest, several different crystals are available, including Ge (111), KAP, and several cuts of quartz, whose resolving power λ/Δλ exceeds 10 000. The calibrated response of the available crystals has previously been reported from measurements at the EBIT-I electron beam ion trap at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Here, we model the absolute throughput of each crystal using ray tracing and verify the results using experimental data for the quartz (101¯1) crystal.

Abstract

Prompted by the detection of K-shell absorption or emission features in the spectra of plasma surrounding high mass X-ray binaries and black holes, recent measurements using the Livermore electron beam ion trap have focused on the energies of the n = 2 to n = 1 K-shell transitions in the L-shell ions of lithiumlike through fluorinelike silicon and sulfur. In parallel, we have made calculations of these transitions using the Flexible Atomic Code and the multi-reference Moller-Plesset (MRMP) atomic physics code. Using this code we have attempted to produce sets of theoretical atomic data with spectroscopic accuracy for all the L-shell ions of silicon and sulfur. We present results of our calculations for oxygenlike and fluorinelike silicon and compare them to the recent electron beam ion trap measurements as well as previous calculations.

Abstract

We present an analysis of three Chandra High Energy Transmission Gratings observations of the black hole binary Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 at different orbital phases. The stellar wind that is powering the accretion in this system is characterized by temperature and density inhomogeneities including structures, or "clumps", of colder, more dense material embedded in the photoionized gas. As these clumps pass our line of sight, absorption dips appear in the light curve. We characterize the properties of the clumps through spectral changes during various dip stages. Comparing the silicon and sulfur absorption line regions (1.6-2.7 keV $\equiv$ 7.7-4.6 {\AA}) in four levels of varying column depth reveals the presence of lower ionization stages, i.e., colder or denser material, in the deeper dip phases. The Doppler velocities of the lines are roughly consistent within each observation, varying with the respective orbital phase. This is consistent with the picture of a structure that consists of differently ionized material, in which shells of material facing the black hole shield the inner and back shells from the ionizing radiation. The variation of the Doppler velocities compared to a toy model of the stellar wind, however, does not allow us to pin down an exact location of the clump region in the system. Abstract

We have used an electron beam ion trap to measure electron-density-diagnostic line-intensity ratios for extreme ultraviolet lines from F XII, XIII, and XIV at wavelengths of 185-205 255-276 Angstroms. These ratios can be used as density diagnostics for astrophysical spectra and are especially relevant to solar physics. We found that density diagnostics using the Fe XIII 196.53/202.04 and the Fe XIV 264.79/274.21 and 270.52A/274.21 line ratios are reliable using the atomic data calculated with the Flexible Atomic Code. On the other hand, we found a large discrepancy between the FAC theory and experiment for the commonly used Fe XII (186.85 + 186.88)/195.12 line ratio. These FAC theory calculations give similar results to the data tabulated in CHIANTI, which are commonly used to analyze solar observations. Our results suggest that the discrepancies seen between solar coronal density measurements using the Fe XII (186.85 + 186.88)/195.12 and Fe XIII 196.54/202.04 line ratios are likely due to issues with the atomic calculations for Fe XII.

Abstract

In an electron beam ion trap (EBIT), the ions are not confined to the electron beam, but rather oscillate in and out of the beam. As a result, the ions do not continuously experience the full density of the electron beam. To determine the effective electron density, ne,eff, experienced by the ions, the electron beam size, the nominal electron density ne, and the ion distribution around the beam, i.e., the so-called ion cloud, must be measured. We use imaging techniques in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and optical to determine these. The electron beam width is measured using 3d → 3p emission from Fe xii and xiii between 185 and 205 A. These transitions are fast and the EUV emission occurs only within the electron beam. The measured spatial emission profile and variable electron current yield a nominal electron density range of ne ∼ 1011–1013 cm−3. We determine the size of the ion cloud using optical emission from metastable levels of ions with radiative lifetimes longer than the ion orbital periods. The resulting emission maps out the spatial distribution of the ion cloud. We find a typical electron beam radius of ∼60 μm and an ion cloud radius of ∼300 μm. These yield a spatially averaged effective electron density, ne,eff, experienced by the ions in EBIT spanning ∼ 5 × 109–5 × 1011 cm−3.

Abstract

The warm electron beam ion trap (WEBIT) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is being developed as a pre-launch, ground calibration source for space-borne, high-throughput, high-resolution x-ray spectrometers, such as the x-ray imaging and spectroscopy mission Resolve quantum calorimeter. Historically, calibration sources for calorimeter spectrometers have relied on characteristic line emission from x-ray tubes, fluorescing metals, and radioactive sources. The WEBIT, by contrast, relies on emission from x-ray transitions in highly charged ions, for example, hydrogen-like and helium-like ions, whose energies are well known and whose line shapes are relatively simple. The WEBIT can create astrophysically relevant ions whose x-ray emission falls in the 0.3-12 keV science bandpass of Resolve and has a portable design advantageous for a calibration source. The WEBIT will be used to help calibrate Resolve’s instrumental line shape and gain scale as a function of various operational parameters during both detector subsystem level testing and instrumental level testing.

Abstract

The Orion high-resolution x-ray (OHREX) spectrometer has been a successful tool for measuring the shapes of density-broadened spectral lines produced in short-pulse heated plasmas at the Orion laser facility. We have recently outfitted the instrument with a charge-couple device (CCD) camera, which greatly increased the accuracy with which we can perform line-shift measurements. Because OHREX is located on the outside of the Orion target chamber, no provisions for the shielding of electromagnetic pulses are required. With the CCD, we obtained a higher signal-to-noise ratio than we previously obtained with an image-plate detector. This allowed us to observe structure in the image produced by the diffraction from the two OHREX crystals, which was highly reproducible from shot to shot. This structure will ultimately limit the accuracy of our spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract

We present the first high-resolution laboratory spectra of X-ray emission following L-shell charge exchange between nickel ions and neutral H2 and He. We employ the commonly used charge exchange models found in XSPEC and SPEX, ACX and SPEX-CX, to simulate our experimental results. We show that significant differences between data and models exist in both line energies and strengths. In particular, we find that configuration mixing may play an important role in generating lines from core-excited states, and may be improperly treated in models. Our results indicate that if applied to astrophysical data, these models may lead to incorrect assumptions of the physical and chemical parameters of the region of interest., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 table
