Environmental factors can exert profound influences on animal physiology including reproduction and immunity, two factors that can strongly influence the lifetime reproductive success of an organism. The prairie vole, (Microtus ochrogaster) is an herbivore that ingests the foliage of broad leaf plants, including a common grass, tall fescue (Fescuta arundinacea). >80% of this grass in the U.S. is infected with the symbiotic fungal endophyte Neotyphodium coenophialum, which produces ergot alkaloids, chemicals that can affect physiological functions in small rodents. A limited number of laboratory studies indicate that animals ingesting diets containing high concentrations of this endophyte display impairments in both immune and reproductive function, as well as changes in reproductive hormones. Similar results have been found in livestock that graze on endophyte-infected grass. Few field studies, however, have investigated the effects on reproduction in rodents inhabiting endophyte-infected compared to unifected grasslands, and no field study has examined potential changes in immunity. To test the effects of endophyte infection on reproductive and immune function in the field, prairie voles were live-trapped from May-July 2005. Animals were sexed, weighed and blood samples were taken. Effects of residing in endophyte-infected fields on immunity were assessed by measuring total immunoglobulin-G, and complement hemolysis. In addition, testosterone levels were determined. Collectively, these results will provide insights on the effects of endophyte infection on reproductive and immune function potentially interacting to affect population dynamics.

Biological clocks are evolved time-keeping systems by which organisms rhythmically coordinate physiology within the body, and align it with rhythms in their environment. Clocks are highly sensitive to light and are at the interface of several major endocrine pathways. Worryingly, exposure to artificial-light-at-night (ALAN) is rapidly increasing in ever more extensive parts of the world, with likely impact on wild organisms mediated by endocrine-circadian pathways. In this overview, we first give a broad-brush introduction to biological rhythms. Then, we outline interactions between the avian clock, endocrine pathways, and environmental and internal modifiers. The main focus of this review is on the circadian hormone, melatonin. We summarize information from avian field and laboratory studies on melatonin and its relationships with behaviour and physiology, including often neglected developmental aspects. When exposed to ALAN, birds are highly vulnerable to disruption of behavioural rhythms and of physiological systems under rhythmic control. Several studies suggest that melatonin is likely a key mediator for a broad range of effects. We encourage further observational and experimental studies of ALAN impact on melatonin, across the full functional range of this versatile signalling molecule, as well as on other candidate compounds at the endocrine-circadian interface. Experimental manipulation has established testosterone as a potent, pleiotropic regulator coordinating morphology, physiology and behavior. However, the relationship of field-sampled, unmanipulated testosterone concentrations with traits of interest is often equivocal. Circulating testosterone varies over the course of the day, and recent reports indicate that testosterone is higher during the night in diurnal songbirds. Yet, most field studies sample testosterone during the morning. Sampling at times when levels and individual variation are low may be one reason relationships between testosterone and other traits are not always observed. Testosterone is regulated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) initiating the endocrine cascade. Research has examined GnRH-induced testosterone levels with traits of interest, yet the relevance of these induced levels and their relationship with endogenously produced levels are not fully clear. Using photostimulated male great tits (Parus major) we tested the hypotheses that circulating testosterone levels peak during the night and that GnRH-induced testosterone concentrations are positively related to nightly testosterone peaks. Blood was sampled during first, middle or last third of night. One week later, baseline and GnRH-induced testosterone levels were sampled during mid-morning. Morning baseline testosterone levels were low compared with night-sampled levels that peaked during the first third of the night. Further, GnRH-induced testosterone was strongly positively correlated with levels observed during the first third of the night. These data suggest that morning testosterone samples likely do not reflect an individual's endogenous peak. Instead, GnRH-induced testosterone levels do approximate an individual's nightly peak and may be an alternative for birds that cannot easily be sampled at night in the field. Sexual selection favours the expression of traits in one sex that attract members of the opposite sex for mating. The nature of sexually selected traits such as vocalization, colour and ornamentation, their fitness benefits as well as their costs have received ample attention in field and laboratory studies. However, sexually selected traits may not always be expressed: coloration and ornaments often follow a seasonal pattern and behaviours may be displayed only at specific times of the day. Despite the widely recognized differences in the daily and seasonal timing of traits and their consequences for reproductive success, the actions of sexual selection on the temporal organization of traits has received only scant attention. Drawing on selected examples from bird and mammal studies, here we summarize the current evidence for the daily and seasonal timing of traits. We highlight that molecular advances in chronobiology have opened exciting new opportunities for identifying the genetic targets that sexual selection may act on to shape the timing of trait expression. Furthermore, known genetic links between daily and seasonal timing mechanisms lead to the hypothesis that selection on one timescale may simultaneously also affect the other. We emphasize that studies on the timing of sexual displays of both males and females from wild populations will be invaluable for understanding the nature of sexual selection and its potential to act on differences within and between the sexes in timing. Molecular approaches will be important for pinpointing genetic components of biological rhythms that are targeted by sexual selection, and to clarify whether these represent core or peripheral components of endogenous clocks. The neuropeptide kisspeptin and its receptor are essential for activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and regulating reproduction. While the role of kisspeptin in regulating the HPG axis in mammals has been well established, little is known about the functional ability of kisspeptins to activate the HPG axis and associated behavior in non-mammalian species. Here we experimentally examined the effects of kisspeptin on downstream release of testosterone and associated aggression and display behaviors in the side-blotched lizard (Uta stansburiana). We found that exogenous treatment with kisspeptin resulted in an increase in circulating testosterone levels, castration blocked the kisspeptin-induced increase in testosterone, and testosterone levels in kisspeptin-treated animals were positively related to frequency of aggressive behaviors. This evidence provides a clear link between kisspeptin, testosterone, and aggressive behavior in lizards. Thus, it is likely that kisspeptin plays an important role more broadly in non-mammalian systems in the regulation of reproductive physiology and related behaviors., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc.
