12. Modeling Dissolved and Particulate 230Th in the Canada Basin: Implications for Recent Changes in Particle Flux and Intermediate Circulation.

Abstract

Global climate change has had large impacts on the Arctic region including rapid reductions in sea ice and rapid increases in surface air temperatures. Documenting the consequences of these changes in the Arctic Ocean is difficult, however, because accessibility limits observations in space and time and aliases measurements. This problem can be alleviated by using geochemical tracers, which can act as natural integrators, allowing us to determine net changes over regions and years. One such tracer is 230Th. We use measurements and an off‐line scavenging model forced by ANHA4, a regional configuration of the NEMO general circulation model, to investigate changes in the Canada Basin in the years 2002–2015. Observations show a clear decrease in 230Th in intermediate layers, particularly in the internal Canada Basin. The model reproduces the observed changes in 230Th concentration profiles. Using the model to determine the origin of the reduction shows that the decrease is due to both higher particle fluxes from increased productivity resulting from the reduction in sea ice cover and increased circulation and stirring by mesoscale eddies increasing lateral exchange between the productive coastal regions and less productive internal Canada Basin. The circulation model clearly shows increased velocities as the ice cover has decreased and storms have increased. Abstract

International audience; Three vertical profiles of rare earth element concentrations and Nd isotopic compositions have been measured in the remote southeast Pacific Ocean. The three stations represent contrasting environments: the oligotrophic center of the gyre (station GYR), the “transition zone” east of the South Tropical Front (station EGY), and the Peru-Chile upwelling marked by a pronounced oxygen minimum (station UPX). Rare earth concentrations display nutrient like vertical profiles except at UPX where surface waters are enriched. At this station Nd isotopic compositions are clearly more radiogenic than in the open ocean, suggesting that boundary exchange process is releasing lithogenic rare earth element from the volcanic Andes. Unexpected radiogenic values (eNd reaching –3.7) are also observed at 2000 m at station GYR in the Upper Circumpolar Deep Water that commonly have eNd values around –6. Exchange processes related to hydrothermal activity are suspected to produce this increase in eNd in the vicinity of the East Pacific Rise. These results provide some guidance for higher resolution studies planned in this region by the international GEOTRACES program.

Abstract

Neodymium isotopic compositions (epsilon(Nd)) and rare earth element (REE) concentrations were measured for filtered surface to deep waters (112 samples) in the Southern Tropical Pacific. The relatively detailed picture of these tracer distributions allowed us to refine the areas where oceanic epsilon(Nd) variations occur. epsilon(Nd) values increase for most of the water masses flowing from Samoa to the Solomon Sea and in the Papua New Guinea (PNG) area, as already observed. Furthermore, water masses arriving from the eastern equatorial Pacific (200-550m depth) also revealed radiogenic values, possibly acquired in the vicinity of the South American coasts and Galapagos Islands. These epsilon(Nd) variations affect the whole water column. The most likely process causing such variations is "boundary exchange" between the numerous radiogenic slopes/margins located in this area and seawater flowing past. Dissolution of atmospheric deposition and/or diffuse streaming of volcanic ash are also suggested to explain the radiogenic epsilon(Nd) observed at the surface in the PNG area. Interestingly, a positive europium (Eu) anomaly characterizes the normalized REE patterns of most of the studied water masses. This anomaly is consistent with the REE patterns of sediment and rock samples that are potential sources for the local waters. Such consistency reinforces the hypothesis that lithogenic sources play a major role in the oceanic REE budget, thanks to "boundary exchange." The data set presented here is a good basis for further sampling that will be realized in the framework of the ongoing GEOTRACES program (www.geotraces.org).

Abstract

Mergers in the arts sector have increased significantly since the early 1980s (Yankey and Singer). Since 2008, the ongoing financial crisis has forced many organizations to consider defensive mergers because of significant cuts in contributed income, a greater need for sustainable business models, and the increased drive for optimization of costs and revenues. As growing competition and new market-based environments continue to increase the popularity of organizational partnerships, it is paramount to address one of the biggest obstacles of merging two organizations, and that is organizational culture. Current literature on mergers tends to convey that failing mergers all point to organizational culture and cultural leadership issues. Also known as "culture clash," this involves identity issues, poor communication, human resources problems, and inter-group conflicts. Euphemistically, and perhaps because of the culture of many arts sector boards of directors, when discussed, the failed mergers often fall under the categorization of "cultural differences". Such euphemisms do not get to the detailed drivers behind the failed mergers.Through an extensive literature review, case studies, and many CEO and board director-level interviews, this thesis lays out the cultural risks and opportunities inherent to the management of such mergers and provides a clear understanding of the drivers within organizational culture(s) that affect the success or failure of mergers in the arts sector.

Abstract

Particulate concentrations of the 14 Rare Earth Elements (PREE), yttrium, and 232-thorium were measured in 200 samples collected in the epipelagic (ca. 0–200 m) and mesopelagic (ca. 200–1500 m) zones of the North Atlantic during the GEOVIDE cruise (May/June 2014, R/V Pourquoi Pas?, GEOTRACES GA01), providing the most detailed snapshot of the PREE distribution in the North Atlantic so far. Concentrations of particulate cerium (PCe) varied between 0.2 and 16 pmol L−1, while particulate neodymium (PNd) concentrations ranged between 0.1 and 6.1 pmol L−1. Particulate ytterbium (PYb) concentrations ranged between 0.01 and 0.50 pmol L−1. In addition, this study showed that PREE distributions were also controlled by the biological production in the upper sunlit ocean and by remineralization processes in the mesopelagic area. Low surface concentrations combined with normalized PREE patterns displaying a negative Ce anomaly and HREE enrichments pointed to freshly formed biogenic particles imprinting the seawater signature. A significant relationship between biogenic silica (BSi) and PHREE was also observed in the Labrador and Irminger seas, due to the occurrence of strong diatom blooms at the sampling time. In order to identify dissolved-particulate processes independent of the ionic radius, we used PHo∕PY ratios and showed that absorption processes were predominant in the upper ocean, while adsorption processes dominated at deeper depths. This study highlighted different lithogenic fractions of PREE and dispersion depending on the shelf: off the Iberian margin, up to 100 % of the PREE were determined to have a lithogenic origin. This lithogenic input spread westward along an intermediate nepheloid layer (INL), following isopycnals up to 1700 km away from the margin.
