Search

To take advantage of the astrophysical potential of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), Chinese and French astrophysicists have engaged the SVOM mission (Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor). Major advances in GRB studies resulting from the synergy between space and ground observations, the SVOM mission implements space and ground instrumentation. The scientific objectives of the mission put a special emphasis on two categories of GRBs: very distant GRBs at z$>$5 which constitute exceptional cosmological probes, and faint/soft nearby GRBs which allow probing the nature of the progenitors and the physics at work in the explosion. These goals have a major impact on the design of the mission: the on-board hard X-ray imager is sensitive down to 4 keV and computes on line image and rate triggers, and the follow-up telescopes on the ground are sensitive in the NIR. At the beginning of the next decade, SVOM will be the main provider of GRB positions and spectral parameters on very short time scale. The SVOM instruments will operate simultaneously with a wide range of powerful astronomical devices. This rare instrumental conjunction, combined with the relevance of the scientific topics connected with GRB studies, warrants a remarkable scientific return for SVOM. In addition, the SVOM instrumentation, primarily designed for GRB studies, composes a unique multi-wavelength observatory with rapid slew capability that will find multiple applications for the whole astronomy community beyond the specific objectives linked to GRBs. This report lists the scientific themes that will benefit from observations made with SVOM, whether they are specific GRB topics, or more generally all the issues that can take advantage of the multi-wavelength capabilities of SVOM., Comment: 67 pages, 1 frontispiece, 21 figures. We present Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) photometric observations of the Ultra-luminous X-ray Source (ULX, X-1) in Holmberg IX. We construct a spectral energy distribution (SED) for Holmberg IX X-1 based on published optical, UV and X-ray data combined with the IR data from this analysis. We modeled the X-ray and optical data with disk and stellar models, however we find a clear IR excess in the ULX SED that cannot be explained by fits or extrapolations of any of these models. Instead, further analysis suggests that the IR excess results either from dust emission, possibly from a circumbinary disk or from a variable jet., Comment: 25 pages, 2 figures, accepted by ApJ

Late type non-starburst galaxies have been shown to contain X-ray emitting objects, some being ultraluminous X-ray sources. We report on XMM-Newton observations of 11 nearby, late-type galaxies previously observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in order to find such objects. We found 18 X-ray sources in or near the optical extent of the galaxies, most being point-like. If associated with the corresponding galaxies, the source luminosities range from $2 \times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ to $6 \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We found one ultraluminous X-ray source, which is in the galaxy IC 5052, and one source coincident with the galaxy IC 4662 with a blackbody temperature of $0.166 \pm 0.015$ keV that could be a quasi-soft source or a quiescent neutron star X-ray binary in the Milky Way. One X-ray source, XMMU J205206.0$-$691316, is extended and coincident with a galaxy cluster visible on an HST image. The X-ray spectrum of the cluster reveals a redshift of $z = 0.25 \pm 0.02$ and a temperature of 3.6$\pm$0.4 keV. The redshift was mainly determined by a cluster of Fe XXIV lines between the observed energy range $0.8-1.0$ keV., Comment: 8 pages, to appear in MNRAS

We present quasi-simultaneous, multi-epoch radio and X-ray measurements of Holmberg II X-1 using the European VLBI Network (EVN), the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), and the Chandra and Swift X-ray telescopes. The X-ray data show apparently hard spectra with steady X-ray luminosities 4 months apart from each other. In the high-resolution EVN radio observations, we have detected an extended milli-arcsecond scale source with unboosted radio emission. The source emits non-thermal, likely optically thin synchrotron emission and its morphology is consistent with a jet ejection. The 9-GHz VLA data show an arcsecond-scale triple structure of Holmberg II X-1 similar to that seen at lower frequencies. However, we find that the central ejection has faded by at least a factor of 7.3 over 1.5 years. We estimate the dynamical age of the ejection to be higher than 2.1 years. We show that such a rapid cooling can be explained with simple adiabatic expansion losses. These properties of Holmberg II X-1 imply that ULX radio bubbles may be inflated by ejecta instead of self-absorbed compact jets., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Thanks to the large collecting area (3 x ~1500 cm$^2$ at 1.5 keV) and wide field of view (30' across in full field mode) of the X-ray cameras on board the European Space Agency X-ray observatory XMM-Newton, each individual pointing can result in the detection of hundreds of X-ray sources, most of which are newly discovered. Recently, many improvements in the XMM-Newton data reduction algorithms have been made. These include enhanced source characterisation and reduced spurious source detections, refined astrometric precision, greater net sensitivity and the extraction of spectra and time series for fainter sources, with better signal-to-noise. Further, almost 50\% more observations are in the public domain compared to 2XMMi-DR3, allowing the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (XMM-SSC) to produce a much larger and better quality X-ray source catalogue. The XMM-SSC has developed a pipeline to reduce the XMM-Newton data automatically and using improved calibration a new catalogue version has been produced from XMM-Newton data made public by 2013 Dec. 31 (13 years of data). Manual screening ensures the highest data quality. This catalogue is known as 3XMM. In the latest release, 3XMM-DR5, there are 565962 X-ray detections comprising 396910 unique X-ray sources. For the 133000 brightest sources, spectra and lightcurves are provided. For all detections, the positions on the sky, a measure of the quality of the detection, and an evaluation of the X-ray variability is provided, along with the fluxes and count rates in 7 X-ray energy bands, the total 0.2-12 keV band counts, and four hardness ratios. To identify the detections, a cross correlation with 228 catalogues is also provided for each X-ray detection. 3XMM-DR5 is the largest X-ray source catalogue ever produced. Most ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) display a typical set of properties not seen in Galactic stellar-mass black holes (BHs): higher luminosity Lx > 3 10^39 erg/s, unusually soft X-ray components (kT < 0.3 keV) and a characteristic downturn in their spectra above ~ 5 keV. Such puzzling properties have been interpreted either as evidence of intermediate-mass BHs, or as emission from stellar-mass BHs accreting above their Eddington limit, analogous to some Galactic BHs at peak luminosity. Recently, a very soft X-ray spectrum has been observed in a rare and transient stellar-mass BH. Here we show that the X-ray source P13 in the galaxy NGC\,7793 is in a ~ 64 day period binary and exhibits all three canonical properties of ULXs. By modelling the strong optical and UV modulations due to X-ray heating of the B9Ia donor star, we constrain the BH mass to less than 15 solar masses. Our results demonstrate that in P13, soft thermal emission and spectral curvature are indeed signatures of supercritical accretion. By analogy, ULXs with similar X-ray spectra and luminosities of up to a few 10^40 erg/s can be explained by supercritical accretion onto massive stellar BHs., Comment: Author version prior to final editing to conform to Journal style; includes extended data figures and supplementary information

We report on the discovery of an apparent triple radio structure hidden inside the radio bubble of the ultraluminous X-ray source Holmberg II X-1. The morphology is consistent with a collimated jet structure, which is observed to emit optically thin synchrotron radiation. The central component has a steep radio spectrum and is brighter than the outer components indicating a renewed radio activity. We estimate a minimum time-averaged jet power of 2 x 10^{39} erg/s that is associated with a time-averaged isotropic X-ray luminosity of at least 4 x 10^{39} erg/s. Our results suggest that Holmberg II X-1 is powered by a black hole of M_BH \geq 25 M_sun, that is inferred to be accreting at a high Eddington rate with intermittent radio activity., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We obtained multi-epoch Very Large Telescope (VLT) optical spectroscopic data in 2011 and 2012 on the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 5408 X-1. We confirm that the HeII\lambda4686 line has a broad component with an average FWHM of v=780\pm64 km/s with a variation of ~13% during observations spanning over 4 years, and is consistent with the origin in the accretion disc. The deepest optical spectrum does not reveal any absorption line from a donor star. Our aim was to measure the radial velocity curve and estimate the parameters of the binary system. We find an upper limit on the semi-amplitude of the radial velocity of K=132\pm42 km/s. A search for a periodic signal in the data resulted in no statistically significant period. The mass function and constraints on the binary system imply a black hole mass of less than ~510 M_sun. Whilst, a disc irradiation model may imply a black hole mass smaller than ~431-1985 M_sun, depending on inclination. Our data can also be consistent with an unexplored orbital period range from a couple of hours to a few days, thus with a stellar-mass black hole and a subgiant companion., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are interesting systems as they can host intermediate mass black holes. Alternatively, ULXs can represent stellar-mass black holes accreting at super-Eddington rates. Recently spectral curvature or breaks at energies above a few keV have been detected in high quality ULX spectra. These spectral features have been taken as evidence against the intermediate-mass black hole case. In this paper, we report on a new XMM-Newton observation of the ULX Holmberg II X-1 that also shows a clear spectral break at approximately 4 keV. This observation was performed during a low luminosity state of the system and by comparing this new data to a high luminosity state XMM-Newton observation, we can conclude that the spectral break energy increases with luminosity. This behaviour is different to a ULX in the Holmberg IX galaxy,where an opposite trend between the luminosity and the spectral break energy has been claimed. We present new radio, optical, and X-ray observations of three Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) that are associated with large-scale nebulae. We report the discovery of a radio nebula associated with the ULX IC342 X-1 using the Very Large Array (VLA). Complementary VLA observations of the nebula around Holmberg II X-1, and high-frequency Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and Very Large Telescope (VLT) spectroscopic observations of NGC5408 X-1 are also presented. We study the morphology, ionization processes, and the energetics of the optical/radio nebulae of IC342 X-1, Holmberg II X-1 and NGC5408 X-1. The energetics of the optical nebula of IC342 X-1 is discussed in the framework of standard bubble theory. The total energy content of the optical nebula is 6 x 10^52 erg. The minimum energy needed to supply the associated radio nebula is 9.2 x 10^50 erg. In addition, we detected an unresolved radio source at the location of IC342 X-1 at VLA scales. However, our Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations using the European VLBI Network likely rule out the presence of any compact radio source at milli-arcsecond (mas) scales. Using a simultaneous Swift X-ray Telescope measurement, we estimate an upper limit on the mass of the black hole in IC342 X-1 using the "fundamental plane" of accreting black holes and obtain M_BH < (1.0\pm0.3) x 10^3 M_Sun. Arguing that the nebula of IC342 X-1 is possibly inflated by a jet, we estimate accretion rates and efficiencies for the jet of IC342 X-1 and compare with sources like S26, SS433, IC10 X-1., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We analyzed the longest phase-connected photometric dataset available for NGC 1313 X-2, looking for the ~6 day modulation reported by Liu et al. (2009). The folded B band light curve shows a 6 day periodicity with a significance slightly larger than 3 sigma. The low statistical significance of this modulation, along with the lack of detection in the V band, make its identification uncertain., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. We report on the discovery by the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer of the black hole candidate Swift J1539.2-6227 and the subsequent course of an outburst beginning in November 2008 and lasting at least seven months. The source was discovered during normal observations with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on 2008 November 25. An extended observing campaign with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and Swift provided near-daily coverage over 176 days, giving us a good opportunity to track the evolution of spectral and timing parameters with fine temporal resolution through a series of spectral states. The source was first detected in a hard state during which strong low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were detected. The QPOs persisted for about 35 days and a signature of the transition from the hard to soft intermediate states was seen in the timing data. The source entered a short-lived thermal state about 40 days after the start of the outburst. There were variations in spectral hardness as the source flux declined and returned to a hard state at the end of the outburst. The progression of spectral states and the nature of the timing features provide strong evidence that Swift J1539.2-6227 is a candidate black hole in a low-mass X-ray binary system., Comment: Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

High-resolution optical spectra of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 5408 X-1 show a broad component with a width of ~750 km/s in the HeII and Hbeta lines in addition to the narrow component observed in these lines and [O III]. Reanalysis of moderate-resolution spectra shows a similar broad component in the HeII line. The broad component likely originates in the ULX system itself, probably in the accretion disk. The central wavelength of the broad HeII line is shifted by 252 \pm 47 km/s between the two observations. If this shift represents motion of the compact object, then its mass is less than ~1800 M_sun., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We have identified the optical counterpart of the ULX source P13 in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 7793. The object is a V ~ 20.5 mag star, ten times brighter than any other established counterpart of a ULX in nearby galaxies. Medium resolution optical spectroscopy carried out in 2008 and 2009 with the ESO-VLT reveals the presence of narrow high order Balmer, HeI and MgII absorption lines indicating a late B type supergiant companion star with mass between 10 and 20 Msol. Stellar H beta and HeII 4686 emission lines are also seen superposed on the photospheric spectrum. We detect different patterns of radial velocity variations from the emission and absorption lines over a time interval of one month. The velocity of the high order Balmer absorption lines changes by ~ 100 km/s while the H beta and HeI 4686 emission components vary by about the same amount but with a different phasing. Assuming that the observed velocity changes trace the motion of the mass-donor star and of the X-ray source implies a mass of the accreting black hole in the range of 3 to 100 Msol with a most probable value of ~ 10 to 20 Msol. We expect an orbital period in the range of 20 to 40 days based on the low density of the supergiant star. We present discovery of a radio nebula associated with the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) IC 342 X-1 using the Very Large Array (VLA). Taking the surrounding nebula as a calorimeter, one can constrain the intrinsic power of the ULX source. We compare the obtained power that is needed to supply the radio nebula with the W50 nebula powered by the microquasar SS433 and with other ULXs. We find that the power required is at least two orders of magnitude greater than that needed to power radio emission from the W50 nebula associated with the microquasar SS433. NGC 1313 X-2 is one of the brightest ultraluminous X-ray sources in the sky, at both X-ray and optical wavelengths; therefore, quite a few studies of available ESO VLT and HST data have appeared in the literature. Here, we present our analysis of VLT/FORS1 and HST/ACS photometric data, confirming the identification of the B ~ 23 mag blue optical counterpart. We show that the system is part of a poor cluster with an age of 20 Myr, leading to an upper mass limit of some 12 M_sun for the mass donor. We attribute the different results with respect to earlier studies to the use of isochrones in the F435W and F555W HST/ACS photometric system that appear to be incompatible with the corresponding Johnson B and V isochrones. The counterpart exhibits significant photometric variability of about 0.2 mag amplitude, both between the two HST observations and during the one month of monitoring with the VLT. This includes variability within one night and suggests that the light is dominated by the accretion disk in the system and not by the mass donor., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures.
