Abstract

We study nuclear spin frequency shifts in a $^{3}$He-$^{129}$Xe comagnetometer caused by spin polarization of $^{3}$He. We use stemless cylindrical cells to systematically vary the cell geometry and separately measure the cell shape-dependent and shape-independent frequency shifts. We find that a certain aspect ratio for a cylindrical cell cancels the dipolar effects of $^3$He magnetization in the regime of fast spin diffusion. Using this control we observe a scalar $^{3}$He-$^{129}$Xe collisional frequency shift characterized by an enhancement factor $\kappa_{\text{HeXe}} = -0.011\pm0.001$ in excellent agreement with theoretical calculation., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1805.11578

Abstract

We describe a $^{3}$He-$^{129}$Xe comagnetometer operating in stemless anodically bonded cells with a 6 mm$^3$ volume and a $^{129}$Xe spin coherence time of 300 sec. We use a $^{87}$Rb pulse-train magnetometer with co-linear pump and probe beams to study the nuclear spin frequency shifts caused by spin polarization of $^{3}$He. By systematically varying the cell geometry in a batch cell fabrication process we can separately measure the cell shape dependent and independent frequency shifts. We find that a certain aspect ratio of the cylindrical cell can cancel the effects of $^3$He magnetization that limit the stability of vapor-cell comagnetometers. Using this control we also observe for the first time a scalar $^{3}$He-$^{129}$Xe collisional frequency shift characterized by an enhancement factor $\kappa_{\text{HeXe}} = -0.011\pm0.001$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The temperature control system of the large-size plasma grid has been developed to realize the long pulse production of high-current negative ions for JT-60SA. By using this prototype system for the JT-60SA ion source, 15 A negative ions has been sustained for 100 s for the first time, which is three times longer than that obtained in JT-60U. In this system, a high-temperature fluorinated fluid with a high boiling point of 270 degree Celsius is circulated in the cooling channels of the plasma grids (PG) where a cesium (Cs) coverage is formed to enhance the negative ion production. Because the PG temperature control had been applied to only 10% of the extraction area previously, the prototype PG with the full extraction area (110 cm x 45 cm) was developed to increase the negative ion current in this time. In the preliminary results of long pulse productions of high-current negative ions at a Cs conditioning phase, the negative ion production was gradually degraded in the last half of 100 s pulse where the temperature of an arc chamber wall was not saturated. From the spectroscopic measurements, it was found that the Cs flux released from the wall might affect to the negative ion production, which implied the wall temperature should be kept low to control the Cs flux to the PG for the long-pulse high-current production. Abstract

To understand the physics of the cesium (Cs) recycling in the large Cs-seeded negative ion sources relevant to ITER and JT-60SA with ion extraction area of 45-60 cm × 110-120 cm, the time evolution of the negative ion profile was precisely measured in JT-60SA where the ion extraction area is longitudinally segmented into 5. The Cs was seeded from the oven at 180 °C to the ion source. After 1 g of Cs input, surface production of the negative ions appeared only in the central segment where a Cs nozzle was located. Up to 2 g of Cs, the negative ion profile was longitudinally expanded over full ion extraction area. The measured time evolution of the negative ion profile has the similar tendency of distribution of the Cs atoms that is calculated. From the results, it is suggested that Cs atom distribution is correlated with the formation of the negative ion profile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The voltage gradient which can be sustained between electrodes without electrical breakdowns is usually one of the most important parameters in determining the performance which can be obtained in an electrostatic accelerator. We have recently proposed a technique which might permit reliable operation of electrostatic accelerators at higher electric field gradients, perhaps also with less time required for the conditioning process in such accelerators. The idea is to run an electric current through each accelerator stage so as to produce a magnetic field which envelopes each electrode and its electrically conducting support structures. Having the magnetic field everywhere parallel to the conducting surfaces in the accelerator should impede the emission of electrons, and inhibit their ability to acquire energy from the electric field, thus reducing the chance that local electron emission will initiate an arc. A relatively simple experiment to assess this technique is being planned. If successful, this technique might eventually find applicability in electrostatic accelerators for fusion and other applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Acceleration of a 500 keV beam up to 2.8 A has been achieved on a JT-60U negative ion source with a three-stage accelerator by overcoming low voltage holding which is one of the critical issues for realization of the JT-60SA ion source. In order to improve the voltage holding, preliminary voltage holding tests with small-size grids with uniform and locally intense electric fields were carried out, and suggested that the voltage holding was degraded by both the size and local electric field effects. Therefore, the local electric field was reduced by tuning gap lengths between the large size grids and grid support structures of the accelerator. Moreover, a beam radiation shield which limited extension of the minimum gap length was also optimized so as to reduce the local electric field while maintaining the shielding effect. These modifications were based on the experiment results, and significantly increased the voltage holding from <150 kV/stage for the original configuration to 200 kV/stage. These techniques for improvement of voltage holding should also be applicable to other large ion sources accelerators such as those for ITER. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Key scientific results from recent experiments, modeling tools, and heavy ion accelerator research are summarized that explore ways to investigate the properties of high energy density matter in heavy-ion-driven targets, in particular, strongly-coupled plasmas at 0.01 to 0.1 times solid density for studies of warm dense matter, which is a frontier area in high energy density physics. Pursuit of these near-term objectives has resulted in many innovations that will ultimately benefit heavy ion inertial fusion energy. These include: neutralized ion beam compression and focusing, which hold the promise of greatly improving the stage between the accelerator and the target chamber in a fusion power plant; and the Pulse Line Ion Accelerator (PLIA), which may lead to compact, low-cost modular linac drivers.

Abstract

The negative ion based neutral beam system now operating for plasma heating and current drive on the large JT-60U tokamak marked the first application of negative ion source technology to the production of high current, high voltage beams for conversion to neutral atomic beams. This pioneering system has demonstrated the technical feasibility of negative ion based neutral beams for future fusion devices. Because this was a very large advance in the state of the art with respect to all system parameters, the principal physical processes governing the performance of the ion source and accelerator were somewhat different than had been the case with earlier much smaller negative ion sources. We have explored the physical mechanisms limiting the power and pulse length capability of these large sources, and have implemented ameliorating changes to reduce power loading on the accelerator grids and increase the transmitted power fraction.
