Its authors are Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, Professor of the Faculty of Arts and Design of the Grodno State University named after Yanka Kupala (GrSU) Dmitry Vladimirovich Karev and his daughter Anastasia Dmitrievna Dudko, Cand. Sci. (History). The main conclusion of the reviewer: the presence of a serious scientific study. It is made on the basis of a rigorous analysis of all six sections of the peer-reviewed work.

In the years 1921–1939 one of the largest military garrisons operated in Grodno. Its strength and importance was evidenced by the presence of regular troops as well as the authorities and military institutions that had their headquarters in this city. Many famous officers who actively participated in the life of the city were associated with the Grodno garrison. The history of the garrison is full of events such as daily service, matters of training and discipline, education and upbringing of soldiers. It is also a sport and the participation of garrison officers in various events that go beyond their daily duties. Its character and significance changed after the withdrawal of regular military units to fight the Germans, just before the outbreak of World War II. The garrison ceased to exist in September 1939 and did not revive after 1945. The aforementioned extensive subject exceeds the framework of the presented text, therefore only some of the threads are presented. They are only a small fragment of the garrison’s history, the history of which is not widely known. Despite the rich source base gathered in the Central Military Archives in Warsaw, in the National Historical Archives of Belarus in Grodno and information contained in the pre-war press, the Grodno garrison’s monograph has not yet been created.

The article recalls little-known columns and literary texts by Orzeszkowa from the earliest period of her work, devoted to descriptions of several parts of the Grodno region, Lithuanian Polesie and Pińszczyzna. The article presents a thesis about the coherence of the vision of the province as a cultural and social space presented in these texts.

Anniversaries are an important event in the activities of the university. For over 60 years of its history, Grodno State Medical University has become a major educational, scientific and clinical center in the education and health care system of the Republic of Belarus. The article provides information on the current state of the university, its main achievements, scientists and staff who have made significant contributions to the establishment and development of the university.

Artykuł nawiązuje do tekstu Joanny Sadowskiej, ukazującego zjawisko fascynacji polską muzyką popularną w Grodnie w schyłkowym okresie ZSRR. Problematyka kultury młodzieżowej na Białorusi dotychczas była traktowana przez badaczy marginesowo. Autorka przywraca do obiegu naukowego nieznane dotychczas fakty z historii białoruskiej kultury alternatywnej, dokonując analizy zjawiska odbioru polskiej muzyki popularnej na przykładzie grodzieńskiego ruchu TLP. Niniejsze rozważania wskazują obszary badań w zakresie subkultur młodzieżowych na Białorusi w okresie radzieckim. The article refers to the text of Joanna Sadowska, who presented the phenomenon of fascination with Polish popular music in Hrodna in the late Soviet period. The subject of youth culture in Belarus has been regarded as marginal by researchers. Through her analysis of the phenomenon of perception of Polish popular music on the example of Television Top Songs List (Telewizyjna Lista Przebojów) movement in Hrodna, the author introduces to the scientific circulation unknown facts from the history of Belarusian alternative culture. The present reflections show the future research paths of study into the youth subcultures in Belarus throughout the Soviet period.

The raising of the residence of Józef Wandalin Mniszech (1670-1747) in Senatorska Street was one of the major constructing projects in Warsaw in the 1720s. The office of the Grand Marshal of the Crown held by Mniszech, the palace’s owner, stipulated the necessity to create ceremonial space. The genesis and importance of extremely novel architectural forms of the facility, including e.g. mansard roof, become justifiable once the political impact of the palace’s owner and his broad intellectual horizons, the alterations of royal residences undertaken in the period, as well as a wider European context, are taken into account. What emerges as the main reference point is the architecture of Saxony. Interestingly, craftsmen working simultaneously for Augustus II and his projects, were employed to work on the Marshal’s residence. The analysis of the preserved archival records allows to unequivocally affiliate the construction with General Burkhard Christoph von Münnich, who being a hydraulic engineer and architekt militaris served at the court of Augustus II. Let us remind that the Count won fame as the builder of the Peter and Paul Fortress where in 1734 he continued its construction after the death of Domenico Trezzini. Contrary to the generally ascertained view, Münnich did not leave Warsaw for good in 1721. On 25 April and 16 May 1735, he hosted dinners in Warsaw; the latter was held to celebrate the coronation of Empress Anna. The architect may have met with Mniszech in Saxony where the Grand Marshal travelled regularly. The main part of the project had been implemented by 1718, however the finishing off works still continued in the latter half of the 1720s. The Mniszech Residence was highly appreciated by the contemporary and ranked among the most sumptuous magnate residences; it was painted in the panoramas by F. C. Hübner and F. C. Schmidt respectively, and following the reroofing conducted by Józef’s son Jerzy August Mniszech, it was immortalized in the famous painting by Canaletto. Letters from 1717-18 addressed to Mniszech by Sebastian Rybczyñski heading the construction works illustrate the complicated process delaying the completion of the project, such as, e.g.: difficulties with obtaining lime due to low water level and shortage of bricks purchased by other Warsaw‘factories. Assuming the function of the Grand Marshal of the Crown was possible only by the wealthiest magnates: representation expenses were high. One of these was the ample sum to be paid for the palace in Senatorska Street. The Germans employed to do the construction works expected much higher payment than Polish craftsmen; not only did they demand fees higher than those paid by senators for whom residences were at the time raised in Warsaw, but also those paid for royal projects. The most novel solution applied in the Mniszech Palace in Senatorska Street was the introduction of the mansard roof testifying to Münnich’s designing talents and the owner’s aspirations. What is worth emphasizing is the awareness of the fact that the structure was precursory. Rybczyñski often reported in his letters that a foreign fashion was visible in the facility, while the construction was conducted following the Saxon mode. The roof may have been the first instance of such a structure in Poland’s capital, preceding the roofs on the Blue Palace across the street, the Bieliñski residence, as well as on the Brühl and Primate’s Palaces. The character of the mass and spatial composition of the residence of Józef Wandalin Mniszech confirm the role Saxony and stonemasons coming from there played in the development of art in Warsaw under the House of Wettin, being justified in the sphere of politics and cultural interests of the magnates. Thanks to novel structural solutions the Palace became an essential example of the reception of Dresden architecture in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Próbą ukazania procesu reaktywacji Kościoła katolickiego na grodzieńszczyźnie jest dysertacja pod tytułem Geneza, powstanie i organizacja diecezji grodzieńskiej w latach 1991-2011. Praca obejmuje VI rozdziałów, w których naświetla następujące tematy: uwarunkowania historyczne i polityczne powstania diecezji grodzieńskiej (rozdział I), administrację centralną, w tym kurię i sąd biskupi (rozdział II), podział na parafie i dekanaty oraz budownictwo kościelne i sanktuaria (rozdział III), duchowieństwo i wierni, w tym seminarium duchowne oraz wspólnoty zakonne żeńskie i męskie (rozdział IV), zaangażowanie duszpasterskie obejmujące życie sakramentalne, nauczanie oraz nadzwyczajne formy duszpasterskie (rozdział V), aktywność społeczno-religijną, a w tym bractwa i stowarzyszenia, działalność charytatywną, zjazdy i kursy oraz inicjatywy wydawnicze (rozdział VI). When Belarus regained its independence in 1991, a qualitatively new stage in the activities of the Catholic Church began, which manifested itself in the rapid revival of religious life, in the creation of church administration structures and in attempts to solve personnel problems. An attempt to show the process of reactivation of the Catholic Church in Grodno is a dissertation entitled Genesis, the uprising and organization of the Catholic diocese of Grodno in 1991-2011. The scientific work includes six chapters, in which the following topics are highlighted: historical and political conditions for the creation of the Grodno diocese (I), central administration, including the curia and bishop's court (II), division into parishes and deaneries, church construction and sanctuaries (III), clergy and faithful, including the seminary and male and female religious communities (IV), pastoral commitment including sacramental life, teaching and extraordinary pastoral forms (V), socio-religious activity, including fraternities and associations, activities charity, conventions and courses as well as publishing initiatives (VI).

Jos gyvenimas vertas daug išsamesnio istorinio tyrimo, o gal net rašytojo romanisto plunksnos. The article reviews the biography and works of the painter Roza Parczewska. The life of the painter presented in the publication was picked up crumb by crumb from various sources of the 21st century. However, these are only small light flashes in the surface layers of the history, which passed into silence. Her life is worth a much more detailed historical research, or maybe even a pen of the novelist. Roza Parczewska (15 September 1799 – 20 October 1852, Raudondvaris Manor of Nemenčinė) was born in the family of colonel Ignacy and Salomea Dziewońska Parczewska. The painter devoted her life to the family, charity work and painting. At the end of the 18th – beginning of the 19th century, a number of people of the manor made attempts in the fine arts, although they did not have appropriate education. It is not known where and when Parczewska studied painting. However, it is likely that she was acquainted with it during her general education. She painted miniatures early in her life. Later she moved to the large-scale oil paintings of religious motives in churches. Parczewska participated actively in the artistic life. She was the first woman in Lithuania who participated with her own works in exhibitions. Her miniatures painted on ivory received an extremely high recognition. The painter created in the spirit of that time and was employed to make copies of popular miniatures of that time. She painted very thoroughly, perfectly repeating the original images. Therefore, her works were especially popular and wide-spread in Lithuanian manors. Alexander Parczewski recorded eight miniatures and fifteen paintings painted by his sister. However, a complete creative heritage of the painter is unknown. It is obvious that her brother Alexander mentioned not all of her works. A part of her paintings were lost in church fires (for example, in 1842 and 1947 all her paintings were lost in the fire of Nemenčinė church). The religious painting of Parczewska was inspired by the tendencies and traditions characteristic of this field of art. The painter brilliantly and thoroughly copied the works of the well-known painters. For example, in 1831 R. Parczewska created a painting of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Kretinga Franciscan Church according to the painting by Szymon Czechowicz from the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish Church in Węgrów (Poland). Another painting of R. Parczewska created in 1837 according to the same work by S. Czechowicz is kept at the altar of Our Lady in Grodno Cathedral (Belarus). R. Parczewska as an amateur painter reached very satisfactory results. She was one of the first women painters who participated in the exhibitions where her works gained praise words. However, the modern art critics estimate her ability of painting as average. Nevertheless, the preserved paintings are considered to be an interesting and valuable example of the specific phenomenon of amateur painter’s creation of the 19th century in Lithuania.

The thesis investigates cultural life of Grodno, which in the second half of the 18th century (1765-1793) was considered to be one of the most prominent center of the Grand Dutchy of Lithuania. Selected research period is framed by two dates: Antanas Tyzenhauzas’ (1733-1785) appointment as the Starosta of Grodno and the year of the last Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The analysis of different manifestations of cultural life in Grodno and their coherency with experiences of West and Central Europe in the second part of the 18th century, as well as with antagonistic ideas of the Enlightenment and Counter-Enlightenment is presented. The research examines cultural and political texts written in the second part of the 18th century in Grodno, actualizing not only the history of writing but also of reading. The concept of a palimpsest is invoked as a method of presented analysis. It is not used metaphorically, but in the sense of a method analysis. The authors who left significant records in the palimpsest of Grodno are presented in the study: the Starosta of Grodno Tyzenhauzas, Jewish people, the Russian Orthodox Old Believers, and patriotically minded deputies of the 1793 Grodno Sejm. Their texts were read by the late 18th century memorialists, poets, and artists - the reviews of those readers are equated with the writing initiatives and are involved into the same analysis.

A valuable part of the Old Periodical collections in the Rare Book Department in the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences is made up by 18th century periodicals of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL). Newspapers printed in Western Europe first appeared in the early 17th century. The first GDL periodicals emerged in the second half of the 18th century. The publishing of periodicals was limited by low literacy levels in the GDL, slow growth of city, poor state of roads and the related malfunctioning of postal service. In 1760-1794, nine titles of newspapers came out in Vilnius and Grodno. The GDL’s first periodical, "Kurier Litewski", with supplements "Wiadomości Literackie", "Wiadomości Cudzoziemskie" and "Supplement do Gazet Wileńskich" started coming out in 1760 in the printing house of Vilnius Academy. It was edited by the prefects of the printing house: Pranciškus Paprockis, Aleksandras Januškevičius and others. In 1763 the printing house of the Vilnius Academy reorganized the publishing of its newspapers. The production of "Kurier Litewski" and its supplements was stopped. In 1764, the newspaper "Gazety Wileńskie" started to be published and it continued until 1793. In total, the printing house of the Vilnius Academy in 1760-1794 published 35 sets of periodicals. Another GDL centre of periodical publishing in the 18th century was Grodno, a city where two titles of periodicals – "Gazeta Grodzieńska" (1775-1783) and "Wiadomości Grodzienskie" (1792) – came out. Seven titles of newspapers are kept in the Old Periodical holdings of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. There is not a single title for which complete sets have been collected; however, no other library has them either. The periodicals from the library’s holdings bear numerous book markings: manuscript inscriptions, labels, stamps of personal and institution libraries, supralibros. The binding of "Kurier Litewski" for 1760 and 1763 is decorated by the supralibros of the Vilnius Public Library, while the sets of "Gazety Wileńskie" for 1770 and 1771 have stamps of the Library of the Vilnius Medical Society (1805-1914, 1920-1939). Book markings provide valuable information about former owners of the publications.

Į sostą įžengęs Pavlas I neseniai prisijungtų buvusios Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės žemių atžvilgiu buvo palankesnis ir suteikė kraštui daugiau savarankiškumo, paleido daugumą įkalintų sukilėlių. Jis pakvietė Gardine namų arešte kalintą, sosto atsisakiusį paskutinį Abiejų Tautų karalių Stanislovą Augustą Poniatovskį atvykti į Sankt Peterburgą. Valdovas sutiko. Stanislovas Augustas Poniatovskis keliavo per Lydą, Šalčininkus, Vilnių, Žiežmarius, Kauną, Šiaulius, Mintaują (dabar Jelgavą), Narvą. Vilniuje jis buvo sutiktas iškilmingai, jį sveikino vietinė administracija, akademinė bendruomenė, dvasininkija, miestiečiai. Šio vizito metu atsiskleidė Rusijos imperijos administracijos ir vietinių gyventojų santykių problematika. The last king of the Republic of two nations, Stanislaw August Poniatowski, having given up the throne, was kept as an honorary prisoner in Grodno, in the palace of Governor-general Nikolaj Repnin. The monarch could entertain guests, travel freely in the surrounding territories; however, he was under surveillance; his own and his courtiers’ correspondence was checked. Catherine II, Russian Empress, promised to grant him permission to go abroad, but this issue was postponed. Only after the Empress’ death Pavel I, who ascended the Russian throne in 1796, changed the state’s policy towards the occupied territories of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and invited Stanislaw Augustus to St. Petersburg. The king accepted this invitation, and the journey from Grodno to the capital of the Russian Empire was organized by the officials of the Russian administration. Travel expenses were mainly covered by the Russian Treasury, but the King had the right to choose travel route and schedule. The king and his escort traveled through Lyda, Šalčininkai, Vilnius, Žiežmariai, Kaunas, Šiauliai, Mintauja (now Jelgava), Narva. The most important stop took place in Vilnius, where the ruler was met enthusiastically and solemnly. There he spent six days: February 19–24, 1797. He was greeted by the representatives of the administration of the Russian Empire, members of Vilnius academic community, clergy, and ordinary citizens. Stanislaw August got acquainted with Vilnius and its surroundings, went to Verkiai and was impressed by what he saw. This trip also revealed some characteristic features of the policy of Pavlas I towards the occupied territories of both countries. Though the authorities of the Russian Empire were ready to make some concession to the local community on some minor and touchy issues, the main question, i. e. restoration of the country’s independence, was not raised. Thus it becomes evident that the authorities did not fully trust the king and had fears about possible patriotic actions during the monarch’s visit
