Abstract

Snow is an important driver of ecosystem processes in cold biomes. Snow accumulation determines ground temperature, light conditions, and moisture availability during winter. It also affects the growing season’s start and end, and plant access to moisture and nutrients. Here, we review the current knowledge of the snow cover’s role for vegetation, plant-animal interactions, permafrost conditions, microbial processes, and biogeochemical cycling. We also compare studies of natural snow gradients with snow experimental manipulation studies to assess time scale difference of these approaches. The number of tundra snow studies has increased considerably in recent years, yet we still lack a comprehensive overview of how altered snow conditions will affect these ecosystems. Specifically, we found a mismatch in the timing of snowmelt when comparing studies of natural snow gradients with snow manipulations. We found that snowmelt timing achieved by snow addition and snow removal manipulations (average 7.9 days advance and 5.5 days delay, respectively) were substantially lower than the temporal variation over natural spatial gradients within a given year (mean range 56 days) or among years (mean range 32 days). Differences between snow study approaches need to be accounted for when projecting snow dynamics and their impact on ecosystems in future climates.

Abstract

This paper develops a flexibility management framework for space logistics mission planning under uncertainty through decision rules and multi-stage stochastic programming. It aims to add built-in flexibility to space architectures in the phase of early-stage mission planning. The proposed framework integrates the decision rule formulation into a network-based space logistics optimization formulation model. It can output a series of decision rules and generate a Pareto front between the expected mission cost (i.e., initial mass in low-Earth orbit) and the expected mission performance (i.e., effective crew operating time) considering the uncertainty in the environment and mission demands. The generated decision rules and the Pareto front plot can help decision-makers create implementable policies immediately when uncertainty events occur during space missions. 18. The Possible Learning and Teaching Benefits of Short Mind-Calming Exercises in Undergraduate Courses

Abstract

The potential benefits of meditation exercises to promote more focused student attention and engagement have only rarely been quantitatively investigated at the college/university level. Here, I report student perceptions on the impacts of regular short mind-calming exercises at the beginning of every class in second, third, and fourth-year biology undergraduate courses, using voluntary anonymous surveys that were completed by at least two-thirds of each class (total enrollments 326, 68, and 15 respectively). In the third year course, 93% of respondents indicated that the exercise was "enjoyable and relaxing", 73% indicated that it was "a valuable use of lecture time because I feel it enhances deep learning", 75% found it a useful perspective "to achieving balance/calm in my life", and 76% rejected the suggestion that although "the exercises are useful, they are not course-related material and therefore are inappropriate within class time". Responses to several other distinct survey statements were also strongly positive, and furthermore, very similar favourable results as above were obtained in the other two courses. Overall, although it is unclear whether these very short exercises actually enhanced learning, many students perceived that it did. Finally, my teaching performance in university-based student assessments of the third-year course was significantly elevated in the year with mind-calming exercises compared to each of the previous nine iterations in which I had been an instructor. Together, these quantitative results suggest that the regular use of such exercises has multiple direct and indirect benefits that may contribute to more effective undergraduate learning and teaching.

20. Co-design and Co-simulation for Engineering Systems: Insights from the Sustainable Infrastructure Planning Game

Abstract

This paper draws on perspectives from co-design as an integrative and collaborative design activity and co-simulation as a supporting information system to advance engineering design methods for problems of societal significance. Design and implementation of the Sustainable Infrastructure Planning Game provides a prototypical co-design artifact that leverages the High Level Architecture co-simulation standard. Three role players create a strategic infrastructure plan for agriculture, water, and energy sectors to meet sustainability objectives for a growing and urbaninzing population in a fictional desert nation. An observational study conducts 15 co-design sessions to understand underlying dynamics between actors and how co-simulation capabilities influence design outcomes. Results characterize the dependencies and conflicts between player roles based on technical exchange of resource flows, identifying tension between agriculture and water roles based on water demands for irrigation. Analysis shows a correlation between data exchange, facilitated by synchronous co-simulation, and highly-ranked achievement of joint sustainability outcomes. 23. Vaping product access and use among 14–17‐year‐olds in New South Wales: a cross‐sectional study

Abstract

: Objectives: We assessed access to vaping products and types of products used and the factors associated with vaping and smoking among young people in the state of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. Methods: A cross‐sectional survey was conducted with a sample of 721 young people aged 14 to 17 years from NSW recruited through online panels. Poisson regression with robust variance was used to estimate relative risks of ever‐vaping and ever‐smoking. Results: Almost one‐third of the sample (32%, n=233) reported being an ever‐vaper, of which more than half (54%) had never smoked prior to starting vaping. Ever‐vaping was independently associated with age and being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and ever‐smoking was independently associated with being male. Ever‐smokers were seven times more likely to be ever‐vapers than those who had never smoked, and ever‐vapers were 18 times more likely to be ever‐smokers than those who had never vaped. Among ever‐vapers who reported which type of device they were using, 86% reported the use of disposable products. “Flavourings and taste” was rated as the most important characteristic of vapes. More than half of ever‐vapers reported getting the last vape they used from their friends (55%, n=130). More than half of ever‐vapers had used a vape that they knew contained nicotine (53%, n=123). Conclusions: Vaping was the strongest risk factor for smoking, and vice versa, suggesting there is not a straightforward, unidirectional relationship between vaping and smoking in young people. Young people appear to be readily accessing nicotine vaping products, which are often disposable and flavoured, through both social and commercial channels. Abstract

Recent warming in the Arctic, which has been amplified during the winter1-3, greatly enhances microbial decomposition of soil organic matter and subsequent release of carbon dioxide (CO2)4. However, the amount of CO2 released in winter is highly uncertain and has not been well represented by ecosystem models or by empirically-based estimates5,6. Here we synthesize regional in situ observations of CO2 flux from arctic and boreal soils to assess current and future winter carbon losses from the northern permafrost domain. We estimate a contemporary loss of 1662 Tg C yr-1 from the permafrost region during the winter season (October through April). This loss is greater than the average growing season carbon uptake for this region estimated from process models (-1032 Tg C yr-1). Extending model predictions to warmer conditions in 2100 indicates that winter CO2 emissions will increase 17% under a moderate mitigation scenario-Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5-and 41% under business-as-usual emissions scenario-RCP 8.5. Our results provide a new baseline for winter CO2 emissions from northern terrestrial regions and indicate that enhanced soil CO2 loss due to winter warming may offset growing season carbon uptake under future climatic conditions.

Abstract

The tundra is warming more rapidly than any other biome on Earth, and the potential ramifications are far-reaching because of global feedback effects between vegetation and climate. A better understanding of how environmental factors shape plant structure and function is crucial for predicting the consequences of environmental change for ecosystem functioning. Here we explore the biome-wide relationships between temperature, moisture and seven key plant functional traits both across space and over three decades of warming at 117 tundra locations. Spatial temperature-trait relationships were generally strong but soil moisture had a marked influence on the strength and direction of these relationships, highlighting the potentially important influence of changes in water availability on future trait shifts in tundra plant communities. Community height increased with warming across all sites over the past three decades, but other traits lagged far behind predicted rates of change. Our findings highlight the challenge of using space-for-time substitution to predict the functional consequences of future warming and suggest that functions that are tied closely to plant height will experience the most rapid change. They also reveal the strength with which environmental factors shape biotic communities at the coldest extremes of the planet and will help to improve projections of functional changes in tundra ecosystems with climate warming.

Reuse of cyber-physical modules is critical to accelerate the development times and reduce design costs of cyber-physical systems (CPS). Successful module reuse depends on the ability to mitigate interoperability problems. Over the years, different communities have worked to understand and mitigate these problems leading to different interoperability models, oftentimes tied to particular domains. One important question, tackled in this article, is whether these models can help with the design of CPS. Specifically, this article evaluates a real-world example of a CPS against the levels of conceptual interoperability model (LCIM). The approach followed leverages natural language processing techniques to narrow an initial set of system changes down to a subset of problems, some of which are interoperability problems. This effort enables a comparison between the empirical evidence found and the interoperability model considered. The results obtained show that the observed interoperability problems fit well under the multilevel categories proposed by the LCIM. Furthermore, the LCIM seems to provide a complete description for the interoperability problems found, checking for fit and completeness. A significant impact of the results obtained is the enabling of more focused discussions of the key attributes of said problems and subsequent identification and assessment of the effectiveness of existing mitigation approaches.
