- Abstract
Hyperspectral imaging data can characterise the chemical and/or mineralogical composition of the imaged ground surface, so field sampling can be optimised. The European MINEO project aims to develop tools and methods to assess and monitor the environmental impact of mining activities, particularly by improving hyperspectral imagery capabilities in mapping of mining-related contaminated areas in European vegetated environments. Hyperspectral imagery of the Sao Domingos abandoned polymetallic mine in southern Spain and Portugal, the Steirische Erzberg iron-ore mine in Austria, and the Prosper-Haniel coal mining area in the Ruhr, Germany, among other sites, showed useful results., Hyperspectral imaging data can characterise the chemical and/or mineralogical composition of the imaged ground surface, so field sampling can be optimised.
