Topic Detection and Tracking (TDT) is a very active research question within the area of text mining, generally applied to news feeds and Twitter datasets, where topics and events are detected. The notion of "event" is broad, but typically it applies to occurrences that can be detected from a single post or a message. Little attention has been drawn to what we call "micro-events", which, due to their nature, cannot be detected from a single piece of textual information. The study investigates the feasibility of micro-event detection on textual data using a sample of messages from the Stack Overflow Q&A platform and Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) version releases from Libraries.io dataset. We build pipelines for detection of micro-events using three different estimators whose parameters are optimized using a grid search approach. We consider two feature spaces: LDA topic modeling with sentiment analysis, and hSBM topics with sentiment analysis. The feature spaces are optimized using the recursive feature elimination with cross validation (RFECV) strategy. In our experiments we investigate whether there is a characteristic change in the topics distribution or sentiment features before or after micro-events take place and we thoroughly evaluate the capacity of each variant of our analysis pipeline to detect micro-events. Additionally, we perform a detailed statistical analysis of the models, including influential cases, variance inflation factors, validation of the linearity assumption, pseudo R squared measures and no-information rate. Finally, in order to study limits of micro-event detection, we design a method for generating micro-event synthetic datasets with similar properties to the real-world data, and use them to identify the micro-event detectability threshold for each of the evaluated classifiers.

This article from the journal "Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgeon" examines the impact of aortic annular geometry on patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for aortic stenosis. The study analyzes how the elliptical shape of the native annulus, compared to the circular design of transcatheter valves, affects procedural outcomes. While patients with more elliptical annuli experienced longer procedure times and higher contrast agent usage, there were no significant differences in key clinical outcomes such as paravalvular leakage or conduction disturbances, suggesting that procedural success is not compromised by annular shape. Mathematics - Optimization and Control - Abstract
The operation of pumps and booster systems accounts for 10% of the yearly energy consumption in Europe. Booster systems are used to ensure the water supply in multi-story buildings, office buildings and public institutions. The question arises how to operate a booster system in order to achieve an optimum in power consumption. In the present paper we derive the conditions for optimal operation., Comment: The paper has been withdrawn by the authors due to readers comments. Several parts are revised

A key problem in the study and design of complex systems is the apparent disconnection between the microscopic and the macroscopic. It is not straightforward to identify the local interactions that give rise to an observed global phenomenon, nor is it simple to design a system that will exhibit some desired global property using only local knowledge. Here we propose a methodology that allows for the identification of local interactions that give rise to a desired global property of a network, the degree distribution. Given a set of observable processes acting on a network, we determine the conditions that must satisfied to generate a desired steady-state degree distribution. We thereby provide a simple example for a class of tasks where a system can be designed to self-organize to a given state., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures; corrected typos, further descriptions added to all sections, subsections added to sec.3 for easier navigation

- Abstract
A novel in situ cell for Raman diagnostics of working lithium-ion batteries is described. The design closely mimics that of standard battery testing cells and therefore allows to obtain Raman spectra under representative electrochemical conditions. Both cathode and anode materials can be studied. First results on the intercalation of a Li₁₋ₓCoO₂ cathode material demonstrate the potential of the experimental approach for structural studies and underline the importance of studying lithium-ion batteries at work.

Moment-closure approximations are an important tool in the analysis of the dynamics on both static and adaptive networks. Here, we provide a broad survey over different approximation schemes by applying each of them to the adaptive voter model. While already the simplest schemes provide reasonable qualitative results, even very complex and sophisticated approximations fail to capture the dynamics quantitatively. We then perform a detailed analysis that identifies the emergence of specific correlations as the reason for the failure of established approaches, before presenting a simple approximation scheme that works best in the parameter range where all other approaches fail. By combining a focused review of published results with new analysis and illustrations, we seek to build up an intuition regarding the situations when existing approaches work, when they fail, and how new approaches can be tailored to specific problems., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, This is the extended version of the paper, containing the complete derivation of the results

Health insurance affects the rate at which individuals visit hospitals and emergency departments (EDs). We identify the causal effect of losing health insurance using a regression discontinuity design. We compare individuals just before and after their twenty third birthday, which insurers have used as a cutoff after which students are no longer eligible for their parents' health insurance: 1.5% of young adults lose their health insurance upon turning 23, and this transition leads to a 1.6% decrease in ED visits and a 0.8% decrease in hospital stays. We discuss why these estimates are larger than those observed among teenage populations. © 2014 by the President and Fellows of Harvard College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Substantial uncertainty exists regarding the causal effect of health insurance on the utilization of care. We exploit a sharp change in insurance coverage rates that results from young adults "aging out" of their parents' insurance plans to estimate the effect of insurance coverage on the utilization of emergency department (ED) and inpatient services. Aging out results in an abrupt 5 to 8 percentage point reduction in the probability of having health insurance. We find that uninsured status leads to a 40 percent reduction in ED visits and a 61 percent reduction in inpatient hospital admissions.

306 - Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyse the social implications of religious fragmentation in the rural indigenous communities of the State of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico. The research is based on the data collected during eighteen months of anthropological fieldwork (1998-2000) carried out in the Zapotec and Chinantec communities of the Sierra Juárez, a mountainous Northern region of the state. It first demonstrates that although indigenous communities in contemporary Oaxaca can be characterised by the so-called "communal ideology" that strives for cultural, legal, social and religious homogeneity, they are at the same time "battlefields" of contesting interests and social projects. The fragmentation of the "religious field" of the "traditionally" Catholic communities all over Mexico has contributed to the increase of social heterogeneity within these. This study looks at the impact of religious fragmentation of communal life and the lives of individuals as members of communities, and at the relationship between different religious groups in the commonly shared "profane" arena. Special attention is paid to religious conflicts and intolerance between Catholics and non-Catholics as a consequence of the rapid increase of religious "dissent" in these communities and in rural Mexico in general. The study analyses the underlying reasons of conflicts and intolerance, demonstrating that these should not be explained only in religious, but also in political, legal and economic terms. Finally, the mechanisms of maintaining or re-establishing "communal consensus" are scrutinised by looking at the ways religious conflicts are resolved, and trying to explain why in some communities social equilibrium has been achieved relatively easily, while in others intolerance has lasted for long. Although concerned with a particular ethnographic region, this study aims to add to greater understanding of the phenomenon of religious fragmentation and its implications in Mexico and in Latin American in general. By combining micro and macro data, it challenges some of the conventional theories of the reasons of religious change and intolerance.

- Abstract
The VISAGE Enhanced Tool for Appearance and Ancestry (ET) has been designed to combine markers for the prediction of bio-geographical ancestry plus a range of externally visible characteristics into a single massively parallel sequencing (MPS) assay. We describe the development of the ancestry panel markers used in ET, and the enhanced analyses they provide compared to previous MPS-based forensic ancestry assays. As well as established autosomal single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that differentiate sub-Saharan African, European, East Asian, South Asian, Native American, and Oceanian populations, ET includes autosomal SNPs able to efficiently differentiate populations from Middle East regions. The ability of the ET autosomal ancestry SNPs to distinguish Middle East populations from other continentally defined population groups is such that characteristic patterns for this region can be discerned in genetic cluster analysis using STRUCTURE. Joint cluster membership estimates showing individual co-ancestry that signals North African or East African origins were detected, or cluster patterns were seen that indicate origins from central and Eastern regions of the Middle East. In addition to an augmented panel of autosomal SNPs, ET includes panels of 85 Y-SNPs, 16 X-SNPs and 21 autosomal Microhaplotypes. The Y- and X-SNPs provide a distinct method for obtaining extra detail about co-ancestry patterns identified in males with admixed backgrounds. This study used the 1000 Genomes admixed African and admixed American sample sets to fully explore these enhancements to the analysis of individual co-ancestry. Samples from urban and rural Brazil with contrasting distributions of African, European, and Native American co-ancestry were also studied to gauge the efficiency of combining Y- and X-SNP data for this purpose. The small panel of Microhaplotypes incorporated in ET were selected because they showed the highest levels of haplotype diversity amongst the seven populati

33. Langzeitoutcome nach Polytrauma im erwerbsfähigen Alter

- Abstract
Given the lack of data in the available literature, we were interested in the disability rate and corresponding insurance costs following multiple trauma in Switzerland. The possible impact of demographic, traumatic and hospital process factors as well as subjective and objective longer-term outcome variables on insurance data acquired were examined. Following multiple trauma the clinical and socioeconomic parameters in 145 survivors of working age were investigated over 2 and 4 years post-injury at a Swiss trauma center (University Hospital Basel). The correlation with the corresponding data provided by the largest Swiss accident insurance company (Suva, n = 63) was tested by univariate and multivariate analysis and patients insured at Suva were compared with those insured elsewhere (n = 82). The mean level of disability in this cohort of multiple trauma patients insured at Suva was 43 %. The insurer expected costs of more than 1 million Swiss Francs per multiply injured patient. In univariate analysis, only discrete correlations (maximum r = 0.37) were found with resulting disability, but significant correlations were found in subsequent multivariate testing most of all for age and the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA 11 % and 15 % predictive capacity, p = 0.001; corrected R2= 0.26). Among variables of longer-term outcome the Euro Quality of Life Group health-related quality of life in five dimensions (EQ-5D) correlated almost as highly with the objective extent of disability as did the reduced capacity to work declared by the patients (0.64 and 0.7, respectively). The estimation of long-term disability following multiple trauma based on primary data following injury appears to be possible only to a limited extent. Given the clinical and socioeconomic relevance, comparable analyses are necessary by including all insurance providers involved.

- Abstract
Background: Since pediatric cancer drug development is a global enterprise, we sought to provide an overview of the landscape of intercontinental clinical trials in pediatric oncology opened over the last decade. Methods: ClinicalTrials.gov was systematically searched to identify all clinical therapeutic trials which opened between 2010 and 2020 and recruited pediatric patients (<18 years) with cancer. Results: Over the last 10 years, 295 (8.7%) of 3383 therapeutic pediatric cancer trials were international and 182 (5.4%) were intercontinental. Most intercontinental trials were phase-1 or 2, with 25% late-phase, 65% were sponsored by industry, and North America was involved in 92%. Industry-sponsored proportionally more phase-1 trials than academia (41% vs. 25%); conversely, academia sponsored more phase-2 and late-phase trials (39% and 31% vs. 36% and 21%, respectively) (p = 0.020). North America–Europe collaboration was predominantly industry sponsored as opposed to North America–Oceania and Europe–Oceania collaboration, more frequently academic (p < 0.0001). Most late-phase trials (18/20, 90%) focusing on pediatric malignancies were conducted by academic sponsors and 10 of these were conducted by Children's Oncology Group (COG)/National Cancer Institute in the United States and Oceania. There was no significant increase over time of intercontinental trials and a trend for a reduction in academic trials. Conclusions: Despite the relative rarity of childhood malignancies, especially within molecular subtypes, only 5.4% of pediatric cancer trials were intercontinental. The number of intercontinental trials remains small, with no significant increase over the last decade. The ACCELERATE International Collaboration Working Group aims to identify existing hurdles and propose solutions to improve intercontinental collaboration in clinical research for the benefit of children and adolescents with cancer.

Consider a cooperation game on a spatial network of habitat patches, where players can relocate between patches if they judge the local conditions to be unfavorable. In time, the relocation events may lead to a homogeneous state where all patches harbor the same relative densities of cooperators and defectors or they may lead to self-organized patterns, where some patches become safe havens that maintain an elevated cooperator density. Here we analyze the transition between these states mathematically. We show that safe havens form once a certain threshold in connectivity is crossed. This threshold can be analytically linked to the structure of the patch network and specifically to certain network motifs. Surprisingly, a forgiving defector avoidance strategy may be most favorable for cooperators. Our results demonstrate that the analysis of cooperation games in ecological metacommunity models is mathematically tractable and has the potential to link topics such as macroecological patterns, behavioral evolution, and network topology., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

- Abstract
Mycelial fungi and acellular slime molds grow as self-organized networks that explore new territory to search for resources, whilst maintaining an effective internal transport system in the face of continuous attack or random damage. These networks adapt during development by selective reinforcement of major transport routes and recycling of the intervening redundant material to support further extension. In the case of fungi, the predicted transport efficiency of the weighted network is betterthan evenly weighted networks with the same topology, or standard reference networks. Experimentally nutrient movement can be mapped using radiotracers and scintillation imaging, and shows more complex transport dynamics, with synchronized oscillations and switching between different pre-existing routes. The significance of such dynamics to the interplay between transport control and topology is not yet known. In a similar manner, the resilience of the network can be tested in silico and experimentally using grazing insects. Both approaches suggest that the same structures that confer good transport efficiency also show good resilience, with the persistence of a centrally connected core. The acellular slime mold, Physarum polycephalum also forms efficient networks between food sources, with a good balance between total cost, transit distance and fault tolerance. In this case, network formation can be captured by a mathematical model driven by non-linear positive inforcement of tubes with high flux and decay of tubes with low flux. We argue that organization of these simple planar networks has been honed by evolution, and they may exemplify potential solutions to real-world compromises between search strategy, transport efficiency, resilience and cost in other domains.

- Abstract
Responding to the growing scientific and practical interest in forensic DNA phenotyping, the VISible Attributes through GEnomics (VISAGE) Consortium was founded in 2017 with the main goal of developing and validating new and reliable molecular and statistical tools to predict appearance, ancestry and age from DNA. Here, we describe the development and inter-laboratory evaluation and validation of the VISAGE Enhanced Tool for Appearance and Ancestry inference from DNA. The VISAGE Enhanced Tool for Appearance and Ancestry is the first forensic-driven genetic laboratory tool that comprises well-established markers for eye, hair and skin color with more recently discovered DNA markers for eyebrow color, freckling, hair shape and male pattern baldness and bio-geographic ancestry informative DNA markers. The bio-geographic ancestry markers include autosomal SNPs (bi-and tri-allelic SNPs), X-SNPs, Y-SNPs and autosomal Microhaplotypes. In total, primers targeting 524 SNPs (representing a 97.6% assay conversion rate) were successfully designed using AmpliSeq into a single primer pool (i.e., one multiplex assay) and sequenced with the Ion S5. In a collaborative framework, five VISAGE laboratories tested the VISAGE Enhanced Tool for Appearance and Ancestry on reproducibility, sensitivity, genotyping concordance, mixtures, species specificity and performance in relevant forensic conditions, including inhibitor-spiked, mock casework and artificially degraded samples. Based on our results, the VISAGE Enhanced Tool for Appearance and Ancestry is a robust, reproducible, and - for the large SNP number -fairly sensitive MPS assay with high concordance rates. With the VISAGE Enhanced Tool for Appearance and Ancestry introduced here, the VISAGE Consortium delivers the first single DNA-test for combined appearance prediction based on seven traits together with bio-geographic ancestry inference based on major continental regions for separated bi-parental and paternal ancestry, which repr
