Search

Compact groups (CGs) of galaxies are extreme environments for morphological transformations and the cessation of star formation. Our objective is to understand the dynamics of CGs and how their surrounding environment impacts galaxy properties. We selected a sample of 340 CGs in the Stripe 82 region, totaling 1083 galaxies, and a control sample of 2281 field galaxies. We find that at least 27\% of our sample of CGs are part of major structures, i.e. non-isolated CGs. We find a bimodality in the effective radius ($R_e$)-S\'ersic index ($n$) plane for all transition galaxies (those with $(u-r) > 2.3$ and $n<2.5$) in CGs. Additionally, transition galaxies in isolated CGs populate more densely the $R_e-n$ plane for $n < 1.75$. In contrast, transition galaxies in non-isolated CGs have smoothly increasing $n$ values, suggesting these galaxies have already suffered morphological transformation, and primarily contribute to the distribution of more compact galaxies in the $R_e-n$ plane for all transition galaxies in CGs. We also find significant differences in the specific star-formation rate (sSFR) distribution between the late-type galaxies (LTGs) ($(u-r)<2.3$ and $n< 2.5$) in non-isolated CGs and the same type of galaxies in the control sample, suggesting that the evolution of LTGs differs in non-isolated CGs. Early-type galaxies ($(u-r)>2.3$ and $n>2.5$) and transition galaxies in non-isolated CGs have lower sSFR values and a higher fraction of quenched galaxies, compared to those in isolated CGs. Based on our results, we propose an evolutionary scenario where the major structures in which the CGs are embedded accelerate the morphological transformations of their members. We study 51 jellyfish galaxy candidates in the Fornax, Antlia, and Hydra clusters. These candidates are identified using the JClass scheme based on the visual classification of wide-field, twelve-band optical images obtained from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey. A comprehensive astrophysical analysis of the jellyfish (JClass > 0), non-jellyfish (JClass = 0), and independently organized control samples is undertaken. We develop a semi-automated pipeline using self-supervised learning and similarity search to detect jellyfish galaxies. The proposed framework is designed to assist visual classifiers by providing more reliable JClasses for galaxies. We find that jellyfish candidates exhibit a lower Gini coefficient, higher entropy, and a lower 2D S\'ersic index as the jellyfish features in these galaxies become more pronounced. Jellyfish candidates show elevated star formation rates (including contributions from the main body and tails) by $\sim$1.75 dex, suggesting a significant increase in the SFR caused by the ram-pressure stripping phenomenon. Galaxies in the Antlia and Fornax clusters preferentially fall towards the cluster's centre, whereas only a mild preference is observed for Hydra galaxies. Our self-supervised pipeline, applied in visually challenging cases, offers two main advantages: it reduces human visual biases and scales effectively for large datasets. Data breaches and cyberattacks represent a severe problem in higher education institutions and universities that can result in illegal access to sensitive information and data loss. To enhance the security of data transmission, Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS, i.e., firewalls) and Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS, i.e., packet sniffers) are used to detect potential threats in the exchanged data. IPSs and IDSs are usually designed as software programs running on a server machine. However, when the speed of exchanged data is too high, this solution can become unreliable. In this case, IPSs and IDSs designed on a real hardware platform, such as ASICs and FPGAs, represent a more reliable solution. This paper presents a packet sniffer that was designed using a commercial FPGA development board. The system can support a data throughput of 10 Gbit/s with preliminary results showing that the speed of data transmission can be reliably extended to 100 Gbit/s. The designed system is highly configurable by the user and can enhance the data protection of information transmitted using the Ethernet protocol. Compact groups of galaxies (CGs) show members with morphological disturbances, mainly products of galaxy-galaxy interactions, thus making them ideal systems to study galaxy evolution, in high-density environment. To understand how this environment affects the properties of galaxies, we select a sample of 340 CGs in the Stripe 82 region, for a total of 1083 galaxies, and a sample of 2281 field galaxies as a control sample. By performing a multi-wavelength morphological fitting process using S-PLUS data, we divide our sample into early-type (ETG), late-type (LTG), and transition galaxies using the r-band S\'ersic index and the colour (u-r). We find a bimodal distribution in the plane of the effective radius-S\'ersic index, where a secondary "peculiar" galaxy population of smaller and more compact galaxies is found in CGs, which is not observed in the control sample. This indicates that galaxies are undergoing a morphological transformation in CGs. In addition, we find significant statistical differences in the distribution of specific Star Formation Rate (sSFR) when we compare both environments for LTGs and ETGs. We also find a higher fraction of quenched galaxies and a lower median sSFR in CGs than in the control sample, suggesting the existence of environmental effects favoring the cessation of star formation, regardless of galaxy type. NGC 4382 is a merger-remnant galaxy that has been classified as morphological type E2, S0, and even Sa. In this work, we performed a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of this peculiar galaxy in order to provide additional information about its history. We used a combination of photometric data in different filters, and multi-object and long-slit spectroscopic data obtained using the Gemini/GMOS instrument. The photometric analysis of the GC system, using the Gaussian Mixture Model algorithm in the colour plane, reveals a complex colour distribution within $R_\mathrm{gal}<5$ arcmin (26.1 kpc), showing four different groups: the typical blue and red subpopulations, a group with intermediate colours, and the fourth group towards even redder colours. From the spectroscopic analysis of 47 GCs, confirmed members of NGC\,4382 based on radial velocities, we verified 3 of the 4 photometric groups from the analysis of their stellar populations using the ULySS code. NGC 4382 presents the classic blue ($10.4\pm2.8$ Gyr, $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-1.48\pm0.18$ dex) and red ($12.1\pm2.3$ Gyr, $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-0.64\pm0.26$ dex) GCs formed earlier in the lifetime of the galaxy, and a third group of young GCs ($2.2\pm0.9$ Gyr; $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-0.05\pm0.28$ dex). Finally, analysis of long-slit data of the galaxy reveals a luminosity-weighted mean age for the stellar population of $\sim$2.7 Gyr, and an increasing metallicity from [Fe/H]=$-0.1$ to $+0.2$ dex in $R_\mathrm{gal}<10$ arcsec (0.87 kpc). These values, and other morphological signatures in the galaxy, are in good agreement with the younger group of GCs, indicating a common origin as a result of a recent merger., Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures. A detailed study of the morphology of lenticular galaxies is an important way to understand how this type of galaxy formed and evolves over time. Decomposing a galaxy into its components (disc, bulge, bar, ...) allows recovering the colour gradients present in each system, its star formation history, and its assembly history. We use GALFITM to perform a multi-wavelength structural decomposition of the closest lenticular galaxy, NGC 3115, resulting in the description of its stellar light into several main components: a bulge, a thin disc, a thick disc and also evidence of a bar. We report the finding of central bluer stellar populations in the bulge, as compared to the colour of the galaxy outskirts, indicating either the presence of an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) and/or recent star formation activity. From the spectral energy distribution results, we show that the galaxy has a low luminosity AGN component, but even excluding the effect of the nuclear activity, the bulge is still bluer than the outer-regions of the galaxy, revealing a recent episode of star formation. Based on all of the derived properties, we propose a scenario for the formation of NGC 3115 consisting of an initial gas-rich merger, followed by accretions and feedback that quench the galaxy, until a recent encounter with the companion KK084 that reignited the star formation in the bulge, provoked a core displacement in NGC 3115 and generated spiral-like features. We combine data from ALMA and MUSE to study the resolved (~300 pc scale) star formation relation (star formation rate vs. molecular gas surface density) in cluster galaxies. Our sample consists of 9 Fornax cluster galaxies, including spirals, ellipticals, and dwarfs, covering a stellar mass range of ~10^8.8 - 10^11 M_Sun. CO(1-0) and extinction corrected Halpha were used as tracers for the molecular gas mass and star formation rate, respectively. We compare our results with Kennicutt (1998) and Bigiel et al. (2008). Furthermore, we create depletion time maps to reveal small-scale variations in individual galaxies. We explore these further in FCC290, using the 'uncertainty principle for star formation' (Kruijssen & Longmore, 2014a) to estimate molecular cloud lifetimes, which we find to be short (<10 Myr) in this galaxy. Galaxy-averaged depletion times are compared with other parameters such as stellar mass and cluster-centric distance. We find that the star formation relation in the Fornax cluster is close to those from Kennicutt (1998) and Bigiel et al. (2008}), but overlaps mostly with the shortest depletion times predicted by Bigiel et al. (2008). This slight decrease in depletion time is mostly driven by dwarf galaxies with disturbed molecular gas reservoirs close to the virial radius. We present the first results of the ALMA Fornax Cluster Survey (AlFoCS): a complete ALMA survey of all members of the Fornax galaxy cluster that were detected in HI or in the far infrared with Herschel. The sample consists of a wide variety of galaxy types, ranging from giant ellipticals to spiral galaxies and dwarfs, located in all (projected) areas of the cluster. It spans a mass range of 10^(~8.5 - 11) M_Sun. The CO(1-0) line was targeted as a tracer for the cold molecular gas, along with the associated 3 mm continuum. CO was detected in 15 of the 30 galaxies observed. All 8 detected galaxies with stellar masses below 3x10^9 M_Sun have disturbed molecular gas reservoirs, only 6 galaxies are regular/undisturbed. This implies that Fornax is still a very active environment, having a significant impact on its members. Both detections and non-detections occur at all projected locations in the cluster. Based on visual inspection, and the detection of molecular gas tails in alignment with the direction of the cluster centre, in some cases ram pressure stripping is a possible candidate for disturbing the molecular gas morphologies and kinematics. Derived gas fractions in almost all galaxies are lower than expected for field objects with the same mass, especially for the galaxies with disturbed molecular gas, with differences of sometimes more than an order of magnitude. We set out to quantify the number density of quiescent massive compact galaxies at intermediate redshifts. We determine structural parameters based on i-band imaging using the CFHT equatorial SDSS Stripe 82 (CS82) survey (~170 sq. degrees) taking advantage of an exquisite median seeing of ~0.6''. We select compact massive (M > 5x10^10 M_sun) galaxies within the redshift range of 0.210. We systematically measure a factor of ~5 more compacts at the same redshift than what was previously reported on smaller fields with HST imaging, which are more affected by cosmic variance. This means that the decrease in number density from z ~ 1.5 to z ~ 0.2 might be only of a factor of ~2-5, significantly smaller than what previously reported. This supports progenitor bias as the main contributor to the size evolution. This milder decrease is roughly compatible with the predictions from recent numerical simulations. Only the most extreme compact galaxies, with Reff < 1.5x( M/10^11 M_sun)^0.75 and M > 10^10.7 M_sun, appear to drop in number by a factor of ~20 and hence likely experience a noticeable size evolution., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present three independent catalogs of point-sources extracted from SPIRE images at 250, 350, and 500 micron as a part of the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS). The source positions are determined by estimating the likelihood to be a real source for each peak on the maps and the flux densities are estimated using the sourceExtractorTimeline, a timeline-based point source fitter. Afterwards, each source is subtracted from the maps, removing a Gaussian function in every position with the full width half maximum equal to that estimated in sourceExtractorTimeline. This procedure improves the robustness of our algorithm in terms of source identification. The HeViCS catalogs contain about 52000, 42200, and 18700 sources selected at 250, 350, and 500 micron above 3sigma and are ~ 75%, 62%, and 50% complete at flux densities of 20 mJy at 250, 350, 500 micron, respectively. We then measured source number counts at 250, 350, and 500 micron and we also cross-correlated the catalogs with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the redshift distribution of the nearby sources. From this cross-correlation, we select ~2000 sources with reliable fluxes and a high signal-to-noise ratio, finding an average redshift z~0.3+/-0.22. The number counts at 250, 350, and 500 micron show an increase in the slope below 200 mJy, indicating a strong evolution in number of density for galaxies at these fluxes. In general, models tend to overpredict the counts at brighter flux densities, underlying the importance of studying the Rayleigh-Jeans part of the spectral energy distribution to refine the theoretical recipes of the models. We present a catalogue of bulgeless galaxies, which includes 19225 objects selected in four of the deepest, largest multi-wavelength datasets available -- COSMOS, AEGIS, GEMS and GOODS -- at intermediate redshift ($0.4 \leq z \leq 1.0$). The morphological classification was provided by the Advanced Camera for Surveys General Catalogue (ACS-GC), which used publicly available data obtained with the ACS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope. Rest-frame photometric quantities were derived using kcorrect. We analyse the properties of the sample and the evolution of pure-disc systems with redshift. Very massive [$\log (M_\star/M_{\odot}) > 10.5$] bulgeless galaxies contribute to ~30% of the total galaxy population number density at $z \geq 0.7$, but their number density drops substantially with decreasing redshift. We show that only a negligible fraction of pure discs appear to be quiescent systems, and red sequence bulgeless galaxies show indications of dust-obscured star formation. X-ray catalogues were used to search for X-ray emission within our sample. After visual inspection and detailed parametric morphological fitting we identify 30 AGN that reside in galaxies without a classical bulge. The finding of such peculiar objects at intermediate redshift shows that while AGN growth in merger-free systems is a rare event (0.2% AGN hosts in this sample of bulgeless galaxies), it can indeed happen relatively early in the Universe history., Comment: 49 pages, 13 figures

We use dust scaling relations to investigate the hypothesis that Virgo cluster transition-type dwarfs are infalling star-forming field galaxies, which is argued based on their optical features (e.g. disks, spiral arms, bars) and kinematic properties similar to late-type galaxies. After their infall, environmental effects gradually transform them into early-type galaxies through the removal of their interstellar medium and quenching of all star formation activity. In this paper, we aim to verify whether this hypothesis holds using far-infrared diagnostics based on Herschel observations of the Virgo cluster taken as part of the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS). We select transition-type objects in the nearest cluster, Virgo, based on spectral diagnostics indicative for their residual or ongoing star formation. We detect dust Md ~ 10^{5-6} Msun in 36% of the transition-type dwarfs located on the high end of the stellar mass distribution. This suggests that the dust reservoirs present in non-detections fall just below the Herschel detection limit (< 1.1x10^5 Msun). Dust scaling relations support the hypothesis of a transformation between infalling late-type galaxies to quiescent low-mass spheroids governed by environmental effects, with dust-to-stellar mass fractions for transition-type dwarfs in between values characteristic for late-type objects and the lower dust fractions observed in early-type galaxies. Several transition-type dwarfs demonstrate blue central cores, hinting at the radially outside-in removal of gas and quenching of star formation activity. The fact that dust is also confined to the inner regions suggests that metals are stripped in the outer regions along with the gas. Aims. We study the dust content of a large optical input sample of 910 early-type galaxies (ETG) in the Virgo cluster, extending also to the dwarf ETG, and examine the results in relation with those on the other cold ISM components. Methods. We searched for far-infrared emission in all galaxies of the input sample using the 250 micron image of the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS). This image covers a large fraction of the cluster. For the detected ETG we measured fluxes in 5 bands from 100 to 500 micron, and estimated the dust mass and temperature with modified black-body fits. Results. Dust is detected above the completeness limit of 25.4 mJy at 250 micron in 46 ETG, 43 of which are in the optically complete part of the input sample. In addition dust is present at fainter levels in another 6 ETG. We detect dust in the 4 ETG with synchrotron emission, including M 87. Dust appears to be much more concentrated than stars and more luminous ETG have higher dust temperatures. Dust detection rates down to the 25.4 mJy limit are 17% for ellipticals, about 40% for lenticulars (S0 + S0a) and around 3% for dwarf ETG. Dust mass does not correlate clearly with stellar mass and is often much more than that expected for a passive galaxy in a closed-box model. The dust-to-stars mass ratio anticorrelates with galaxy luminosity, and for some dwarf ETG reaches values as high as for dusty late-type galaxies. In the Virgo cluster slow rotators appear more likely to contain dust than fast ones. Comparing the dust results with those on HI from ALFALFA, there are only 8 ETG detected both in dust and in HI in the HeViCS area; 39 have dust but only an upper limit on HI, and 8 have HI but only an upper limit on dust. We investigate the dust-to-gas mass ratio and the environmental effects on the various components of the interstellar medium for a spatially resolved sample of Virgo spirals. We have used the IRAM-30m telescope to map over their full extent NGC 4189, NGC 4298, NGC 4388, and NGC 4299 in the 12CO(1-0) and the 12CO(2-1) lines. We observed the same lines in selected regions of NGC 4351, NGC 4294, and NGC 4424. The CO observations are combined with Herschel maps in 5 bands between 100-500 {\mu}m from the HeViCS survey, and with HI data from the VIVA survey, to obtain spatially resolved dust and gas distributions. We studied the environmental dependencies by adding to our sample eight galaxies with 12CO(1-0) maps from the literature. We estimate the integrated mass of molecular hydrogen for the galaxies observed in the CO lines. We find molecular-to-total gas mass fractions between 0.04 \leq fmol \leq 0.65, with the lowest values for the dimmest galaxy in the B-band. The integrated dust-to-gas ratio ranges between 0.011 and 0.004. For the 12 mapped galaxies we derive the radial distributions of the atomic gas, molecular gas, and dust. We also study the effect of different CO-to-H2 conversion factors. Both the molecular gas and the dust distributions show steeper radial profiles for HI-deficient galaxies and the average dust-to-gas ratio for these galaxies increases or stays radially constant. On scales of \sim 3 kpc, we find a strong correlation between the molecular gas and the 250 micron surface brightness that is tighter than average for non-deficient galaxies. The correlation becomes linear if we consider the total gas surface mass density. However, the inclusion of atomic hydrogen does not improve the statistical significance of the correlation. Using the far-infrared emission, as observed by the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS), and the integrated HI and CO brightness, we infer the dust and total gas mass for a magnitude limited sample of 35 metal rich spiral galaxies in Virgo. The CO flux correlates tightly and linearly with far-infrared fluxes observed by Herschel. Molecules in these galaxies are more closely related to cold dust rather than to dust heated by star formation or to optical/NIR brightness. We show that dust mass establishes a stronger correlation with the total gas mass than with the atomic or molecular component alone. The dust-to-gas ratio increases as the HI deficiency increases, but in highly HI deficient galaxies it stays constant. Dust is in fact less affected than atomic gas by weak cluster interactions, which remove most of the HI gas from outer and high latitudes regions. Highly disturbed galaxies, in a dense cluster environment, can instead loose a considerable fraction of gas and dust from the inner regions of the disk keeping constant the dust-to-gas ratio. There is evidence that the molecular phase is also quenched. This quencing becomes evident by considering the molecular gas mass per unit stellar mass. Its amplitude, if confirmed by future studies, highlights that molecules are missing in Virgo HI deficient spirals, but to a somewhat lesser extent than dust., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Using Herschel data from the Open Time Key Project the Herschel Virgo Cluster Survey (HeViCS), we investigated the relationship between the metallicity gradients expressed by metal abundances in the gas phase as traced by the chemical composition of HII regions, and in the solid phase, as traced by the dust-to-gas mass ratio. We derived the radial gradient of the dust-to-gas mass ratio for all galaxies observed by HeViCS whose metallicity gradients are available in the literature. They are all late type Sbc galaxies, namely NGC4254, NGC4303, NGC4321, and NGC4501. We examined different dependencies on metallicity of the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor (\xco), used to transform the $^{12}$CO observations into the amount of molecular hydrogen. We found that in these galaxies the dust-to-gas mass ratio radial profile is extremely sensitive to choice of the \xco\ value, since the molecular gas is the dominant component in the inner parts. We found that for three galaxies of our sample, namely NGC4254, NGC4321, and NGC4501, the slopes of the oxygen and of the dust-to-gas radial gradients agree up to $\sim$0.6-0.7R$_{25}$ using \xco\ values in the range 1/3-1/2 Galactic \xco. For NGC4303 a lower value of \xco$\sim0.1\times$ 10$^{20}$ is necessary. We suggest that such low \xco\ values might be due to a metallicity dependence of \xco (from close to linear for NGC4254, NGC4321, and NGC4501 to superlinear for NGC4303), especially in the radial regions R$_G<$0.6-0.7R$_{25}$ where the molecular gas dominates. On the other hand, the outer regions, where the atomic gas component is dominant, are less affected by the choice of \xco, and thus we cannot put constraints on its value., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, A&A accepted

We present a new method to analyze the IMF at its high mass end in young stellar clusters, which rely on two integrated observables: the cluster bolometric and Halpha luminosity. Using several cluster samples selected in M33 we show that a stochastically sampled universal IMF is in better agreement with the data than a truncated IMF whose maximum stellar mass depends on cluster mass. Many observations indicate that dark matter dominates the extra-galactic Universe, yet no totally dark structure of galactic proportions has ever been convincingly identified. Previously we have suggested that VIRGOHI 21, a 21-cm source we found in the Virgo Cluster using Jodrell Bank, was a possible dark galaxy because of its broad line-width (~200 km/s) unaccompanied by any visible gravitational source to account for it. We have now imaged VIRGOHI 21 in the neutral-hydrogen line and find what could be a dark, edge-on, spinning disk with the mass and diameter of a typical spiral galaxy. Moreover, VIRGOHI 21 has unquestionably been involved in an interaction with NGC 4254, a luminous spiral with an odd one-armed morphology, but lacking the massive interactor normally linked with such a feature. Numerical models of NGC 4254 call for a close interaction ~10^8 years ago with a perturber of ~10^11 solar masses. This we take as additional evidence for the massive nature of VIRGOHI 21 as there does not appear to be any other viable candidate. We present HST/WFPC2 observations of the dwarf galaxy HIPASS J1321-31. This unusual galaxy lies in the direction of the Centaurus A group of galaxies, and has a color-magnitude diagram with a distinctive red plume of luminous stars. This feature could arise from (a) a red giant branch if the galaxy were much nearer than previously recognized, (b) a peculiar asymptotic giant branch, or, (c) an ~1 Gigayear old population of intermediate mass red supergiants, which we find to be the most likely explanation. However, the lack of equally luminous blue stars requires that the star formation has dropped substantially since these stars were formed. Evidently HIPASS J1321-31 experienced an episode of enhanced star formation rather recently in its star formation history followed by a period of relative quiescence which has led to the evolution of the main sequence stars into the red supergiant branch. The stellar populations in HIPASS J1321-31 reflect a star formation history that is uncommon in star forming dwarf galaxies. This is the first time such a star formation history has been noted, although the literature contains a small number of other dwarf galaxies with similar color-magnitude diagrams. Therefore, HIPASS J1321-31 and these other galaxies represent a different path of dwarf galaxy evolution that has not been well-explored and an important probe into how dwarf galaxies evolve., Comment: 5 pages, including 3 figures and 1 table, emulateapj5/apjfonts style. The Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray UHECR, by UHE neutrino-relic neutrino Z showering in Hot Dark Halos HDM, should exhibits an energy spectra and an anisotropy reflecting (also) the relic neutrino masses and their hierarchical HDM halo clustering. A twin light neutrino mass splitting may reflect to twin Z resonance and into a complex UHECR spectra modulation, a twin bump, at the edge at highest GZK energy cut-off. Each possible neutrino mass associates a characteristic dark halo size (galactic, local, Super Cluster) and its local anisotropy due to our peculiar position within that dark matter distribution. A neutrino HDM halo around a Mpc will allow to the UHECR neutron secondary component at E_n> 10^{20} eV (due to Z decay) to arise playing a role comparable with the charged p- anti{p} ones. Their un-deflected n-anti{n} (or decayed p-anti{p}) flight is shorter leading to a prompt and hard UHECR trace pointing toward the original UHECR source direction. The direct p -anti{p} pairs are split and spread by random magnetic fields into a more diluted and smeared UHECR signal around the original source direction. TeVs signals by synchrotron radiation must also mark the Z-WW Showering. The UHE Neutrino- Z showering signatures may be already found in recent (and future) events in AGASA (and Auger) data. The diffused gamma halo around our Galaxy recently discovered by EGRET could be produced by annihilations of relic neutrinos N (of fourth generation), whose mass is within a narrow range (Mz /2 < M < Mz). Neutrino annihilations in the halo may lead to either ultrarelativistic electron pairs whose inverse Compton Scattering on infrared or optical galactic photons could be the source of the observed GeV gamma rays, or to prompt 100 MeV- 1 GeV photons (due to neutral pion secondaries) born by N - anti N --> Z--> quark pairs reactions. The consequent gamma flux (10 ^(-7)- 10^(-6) cm ^(-2) s^(-1) sr^(-1)) is well comparable to the EGRET observed one and it is also compatible with the narrow window of neutrino mass : 45 GeV < M < 50 GeV recently required to explain the underground DAMA signals. The presence of heavy neutrinos of fourth generation do not contribute much to solve the dark matter problem of the Universe, but it may be easily detectable by outcoming LEP II data., Comment: 16 pages, Latex text,in press in Astroparticle Physics 1999
