Purposely resting athletes during competitive games has become commonplace in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Despite this phenomenon, little research has investigated fan attitudes and behavioral intentions concerning the act of NBA teams purposely resting players. This study utilized Prolific Academic crowdsourcing service to recruit a national sample of NBA fans to participate in this research. Participants provided data concerning their attitudes toward the practice of player resting as well as their strength of team identification and self-construal level. Results indicate that those who are low on both team identification and an interdependent self-construal should be expected to respond negatively to resting. If fans are strong on either team identification, interdependent self-construal, or both, they are less likely to respond negatively to player resting. The concept of women as 'child-bearers' and the overarching view of motherhood as a prerequisite for female fulfilment has formed the basis for societal expectations of the female gender for centuries. However, the number of women who choose not to have children is increasing. This research aimed to gain a deeper understanding of millennials' perception of voluntarily childless women in the UK. It also aimed to explore the extent to which these perceptions are culturally specific and are shaped by societal expectations and the media. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with participants aged between twenty-three and thirty-eight years. Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis informed by a social constructionist epistemological standpoint. Data analysis related to millennial perceptions of voluntarily childless women in the UK revealed three dominant themes: (1) women are expected to behave in accordance with socially constructed gender norms; (2) women are presumed to desire children, as dictated by their gender; and (3) external positive perspectives contrast with internal negative perceptions. Findings indicated that women remain captive to the culture of prevalent gendered expectations that conflate womanhood with motherhood. Millennial mothers displayed external positive perspectives toward voluntarily childless women, but internal prejudices and biases were apparent in the data. This article analyzes the discursive representations of 'the Yucatecan woman' present in the literary newspaper the Museo Yucateco (1841-1842), as part of the foundational fictions of Yucatecan identity that were configured by the Yucatecan elite, when Yucatan was independent of the Mexican nation in the mid-nineteenth century. This construction of regional identity is based on a nationalist discourse appropriated by regionalist ideology. It has a patriarchal, binary structure that imagines political identities in an iconized way (the public and the private) and models the power of the male subject over the female as part of his search for political and symbolic hegemony. It has been argued that in order to study both the positive and negative impact of social media usage holistically, we must focus on identity development. The current study examined social media usage in relation to identity development, identity distress, and peer attachment. We collected data through an online anonymous survey from 849 young adults recruited from a large metropolitan university in the southeastern United States. Although social media usage was related to higher levels of identity distress, lower levels of identity development, and less peer attachment, results varied by sex and reasons for spending time on social media. Using it to avoid face-to-face contact or to create false identities was related to problematic development, whereas using it to post photos was related to positive development. The use of avatars was particularly negative for women, associated with lower identity development and greater identity distress. In addition to using gross measures of social media usage such as time spent, research might benefit from further investigating the 'why' and 'how' social media is used. This might yield important avenues for intervention and prevention programs aimed at positive youth development. Based on an ethnography in the Colombian border state of La Guajira, this article argues that ethnographic research can challenge defaults to methodological nationalism, stark binaries be-tween host and migrant communities, and a framing of Venezuelan migration that flattens the complex realities of individuals in these borderlands who have extensive ties between both Colombia and Venezuela. This article begins by characterizing this border region, describing the relevant history of La Guajira and contemporary dynamics that help situate this specific Venezuelan migration flow. After, I describe the complex identities that form in these borderlands and what exactly 'Venezuelan' looks like in this state. Lastly, building on the characterization of the borderland and Venezuelan identity in La Guajira, I offer two examples of how these pieces come together to facilitate certain social interactions and explain migrant experiences. Social Identity Theory (Tajfel; Tajfel and Turner) is rooted in the premise that individuals construct their own identities based on social categorization and group membership, and this attachment of people to groups is sufficient 'to produce prejudices both in favor of members of one's own group and sometimes against members of another group' (Dovidio et al. 4). In this article, I analyze how the characters in 'A Private Experience' (2009), by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and 'Hora de Partir' (2007), by Cesar Mba A. Abogo, resist group categorization and minimize stereotyping and group distinctions by experiencing intergroup relationships and enhancing their individualities. While the story 'A Private Experience' portrays a Muslim and a Christian woman who defy the Muslim-Christian conflict in Nigeria by means of their peaceful and close connection, the interracial couple in 'Hora de Partir' challenges racial and social prejudices through their love relationship. Thus, both narratives depict resistant subjects who confront the hegemonic ideologies resulting from group categorizations by the mutual interest between individuals who belong to conflicting groups and the depiction of a fruitful amalgam of transcultural elements within the stories that endorses diversity as a positive social value. This study examines relationships among perceived corporate social responsibility (CSR), perceived team CSR, social identities, and corporate brand equity in the context of using Chinese professional baseball teams as brand extensions. Data from online surveys of Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) consumers (N = 467) were analyzed using structural equation modeling and the SPSS macro PROCESS. Findings revealed that perceived CSR and perceived team CSR have a direct positive effect on corporate brand equity. The results also showed that consumer-company identity mediates the relationship between perceived CSR and corporate brand equity; the relationship between perceived team CSR and corporate brand equity is sequentially mediated by team identity and consumer-company identity. Beyond the CSR initiatives, city identity positively influenced corporate brand equity via team and consumer-company identity. Implications for fostering brand equity and brand values are discussed, focusing on using CSR and city identity as the means of positive influence. Since 2006, according to the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey, the largest portion of people in Northern Ireland identify themselves not as Unionist nor Nationalist but as Neither. This fact is difficult to tally with the patterns of polarised election results and the narratives of a 'culture war' that dominate most analyses of contemporary Northern Ireland. This article examines the existence of this large portion of the population in Northern Ireland who reject the identities upon which the 1998 Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement is centred. We find that those identifying as neither Unionist nor Nationalist are predominantly female, they come from all religious backgrounds, all age groups, and both British and Irish national identities. The majority of those who identify as Neither appear to do so as a statement of rejection of what is on offer from the political parties in Northern Ireland; rather than supporting a centrist party, they support no party at all. The article concludes that the 1998 Agreement has created the conditions for a growing number of people to identify as neither Unionist nor Nationalist, but at the same time it makes the emergence of any strong alternative, 'third way' type of politics difficult to envisage. We conduct a laboratory experiment in which participants can make donations to real charities. We vary whether the experimenter provides matching funds for any such donations, and whether there is individual or team competition for these matching funds. Our results indicate that providing matching funds for all donations does increase donations from 23% to 33% of the endowment. While individual competition for matching funds had nearly the same effectiveness as matching all donations, by far the most effective approach was to form (anonymous) teams that competed for matching funds; this led to donations of 47% of the endowment. We appeal to the notion of group identity to explain our results--participants seemed to be reluctant to 'let down their team' in a competition. Our results can be seen as providing support for the notion that combining group identity and competition creates a motivation that can potentially be harnessed effectively for prosocial purposes. In 1970, the Cenotaph for Korean Atomic Bomb Victims was erected in Hiroshima by local Koreans, most of whom were associated with South Korea. In the 1980s, this cenotaph gradually came to be seen as discriminatory against Koreans due to its location outside the Peace Memorial Park. In the 1990s, Hiroshima City and the two major organizations of Japanese-resident Koreans (zainichi Koreans), pro-South Korean Mindan and pro-North Korean Soren, began negotiations to create a 'unified' cenotaph that would be moved inside the Park. However, discussions reached a deadlock due to the rivalry between Mindan and Soren, and also an internal split that occurred within Mindan. This paper will examine why the debate on the relocation of the cenotaph reached a deadlock in the 1990s, with a focus on the identity of zainichi Koreans. While Mindan and Soren have their own collective identities, each individual zainichi Korean may identify oneself on various levels, from social to personal. An individual's social identity develops through belonging to and participating in activities of social organizations. Given the rivalry between Mindan and Soren, one's social identity will be influenced by whether one is involved with Mindan or Soren. In contrast, his/her personal identity may develop through more personal experiences and generally transcends the simple Mindan-Soren division. The analysis will show that the relocation debate was caused by these various identities, which manifested and became dominant depending on context, leading to consonance or dissonance both between and within organizations. The present research examines the effect of priming independent and interdependent self-construals on antecedents, identification, and outcomes of global citizenship. Following a self-construal manipulation, American and Chinese participants completed measures regarding antecedents (normative environment, global awareness), identification, and outcomes (prosocial values) of global citizenship. Results showed that priming interdependence (vs. absence of prime) resulted in greater global citizenship identification and prosocial ratings. A structural model suggested that the interdependence prime influenced global citizenship identification (and subsequent prosocial values) through highlighting valued others in one's normative environment who prescribe a global citizen identity. This essay revisits the Appalachian murder ballad 'Rose Connolly' the subject of a 1979 essay by D. K. Wilgus. Following Wilgus, I offer further evidence of the song's presence in Ireland and interrogate persistent hesitancy to claim Irish influence on Appalachian folklore. My analysis then traces this bias to the influence of Cecil Sharp's English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians (Sharp and Campbell 1917) and his theories of race in the British Isles and Appalachia. Using sources on everyday life of average citizens, the article shows that an Arab-Jewish hybrid identity already existed in Palestine in the late nineteenth century, prior to the introduction of Arab or Jewish national movements. The subject of foodways and food is omnipresent and developed in a variety of ways in the work of Gilberto Freyre, and demonstrates both the scientific project and the political program of the author from Pernambuco, Brazil, as well as his pioneering ideas and contemporary importance. In a quest for synthesis and investigation of some less evident aspects of Freyre's work, this article intends to demonstrate that the key themes of race, identity, and modernity underlie the topic of food as addressed by Freyre. The relation between nutrition and race suggests that food-based arguments were fundamental to the supplanting of a racist paradigm with a cultural one. The relation between food and identity reveals that Brazil's cuisine epitomizes the mestizo character of its people. The relation between food and modernity implies that national foodways must be defended against the homogenizing forces of modernization. Achievement gaps may reflect the cognitive impairment thought to occur in evaluative settings (e.g., classrooms) where a stereotyped identity is salient (i.e., stereotype threat). This study presents an economic model of stereotype threat that reconciles prior evidence on how student effort and performance are influenced by this social-identity phenomenon. This study also presents empirical evidence from a framed field experiment in which students at a selective college were randomly assigned to a treatment that primed their awareness of a negatively stereotyped identity (i.e., student-athlete). This social-identity manipulation reduced the test-score performance of athletes relative to non-athletes by 12%. This study reports on an empirical enquiry into the presence of women in the top management positions in non-profit organizations (NPO) and Fortune 500 companies. Because market disruptions of 2008 caused organizations of all types to modify their strategies, structures, and operations, this study examined organizations just prior to that date hoping to examine organizations in more 'normal' times. There are a number of institutions posited as vestibules for maintaining and reinforcing rituals and celebrations of African consciousness (i.e., education, religion, arts, etc.). The one that does not readily come to mind, however, is leisure (i.e., organized sport and physical activity). Leisure is salient to African Americans and is the terrain by which their personal and social identities are often nurtured. Ironically, leisure also represents a cultured space where racial oppression abounds, and is therefore often a contested space for African Americans. This essay offers a critique of the emancipatory properties of leisure through the lenses of Na'im Akbar's African-centered paradigm, via the tenets of self-knowledge (e.g., racial-self affirmation) and collective liberation (e.g., spiritual rhythm and racial kinship). It demonstrates how (at the individual/micro level) African Americans may engage in constitutive and regulatory leisure practices that enlarge their spiritual, experiential, and perceptual spheres of freedom, thereby allowing them some control over the nature and quality of their leisure experiences. By considering Jane Crow as a precursor to Kimberle Crenshaw's theory of intersectionality, I argue that Murray's work provides contemporary scholars and democratic activists with resources for thinking about legal subjects as embodied persons at intersections of sexual, gender, and racial identities. In this article, I explore how immigrants from the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau living in Portugal use mobile phones in their daily lives in Lisbon. Whereas one might assume that mobile phones and other new information technologies facilitate transnational communication between Africa and Portugal, the ethnographic fieldwork that I conducted in Lisbon from 1999 to 2003 revealed a different scenario. Instead, mobile phones as imagined and used by the Guinean immigrants I met in Lisbon revealed less about transnationalism and globalization than they did about constructing community and identity in a new locale. As Guinean immigrants in Portugal reconfigured their relationship to their former colonizers and struggled to make their way in a new, multicultural Europe, they used their mobile phones to engage local networks, shape local identifies, and transform Lisbon's sprawl into an African migrant village. Here, I highlight the gendered dimensions of this process and contend that Guinean men's and women's varied uses of mobile phones in Lisbon underscore contrasting experiences of migration, mobility, and belonging. This study examined victims' experience of plagiarism as an illustration of an interpersonal threat to public identity. Consistent with prior research examining interpersonal threats to public identity, participants expressed negative emotions, perceived the copying to be intentional, perceived the copying to illegitimately harm their public image, and endorsed confronting the other person when copied without permission (vs. with permission). A path analysis shows the manipulation of plagiarism predicting anger through participant's perception of the copying as illegitimate and the copier as intentionally attempting to harm the participants' public image, and subsequently predicting endorsed confrontation with the perpetrator of the copying. The results support the notion that plagiarism is experienced by victims as an interpersonal threat to their public identity.
