6. Waves in locally stratified media

Abstract

The main objective is to provide a wide range of approaches that yield useful understanding for the different scenarios of waves in locally stratified media. A classification system is constructed, where the physical problems are put into categories with common mathematical models and problems. This provides a convenient tool for identifying which methods and approaches to employ for a particular physical problem. The bulk of the analysis is centred around two methods or theories - multiple scale homogenisation and generalised ray theory. Multiple scale homogenisation is relevant for long-wave propagation and finding the effective medium of the layered structure. The Backus average for finely layered media is derived in a new way, where multiple scale techniques and the propagator matrix formulation are combined to form a general framework for most linear waves in locally stratified media. With this framework, one can easily derive known formulae for effective media, including the anisotropic effective mass density for acoustic waves. Since the original Backus average was derived for systems close to the static limit, and the anisotropic mass density is a low frequency dynamic effect, acoustic waves are analysed in more detail. The technique is also applied to more complicated media, and it is shown how effective stiffness tensor can be found for piezoelectric media. However, the key feature of this framework is that higher order terms are easily calculated. Nevertheless, the higher order terms are sensitive to the distance propagated, and the effective medium solution is only valid for short distances of propagation. This is in agreement with previous simulations. The validity of Backus averaging or accuracy of effective medium theory is investigated for the one dimensional case. Using Magnus series and manipulation of exponential operators, a new relationship between the effective medium and exact solutions are derived. Based on this relation, the same observations are made as in previous numerical work. Bounds for the factor between the effective and exact solutions are also calculated.

Abstract

Plant-parasitic nematodes cause 14 % of annual losses in different crops in the world and there are more than 35 genera of phytoparasitic nematodes associated with the rhizosphere of the papaya crop (Carica spp.), being the most important the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp). The present study aimed to carry out the morphological identification of the genera of nematodes associated with the cultivation of Andean papaya (Carica pubescens), in Sandia district, Puno, Perú. One-hundred and fifty-five soil and roots samples from eight communities were evaluated. The samples were processed by the centrifugal fluctuation method in sucrose solution and subsequent identification of the nematodes at the genus level, using the dichotomous key of Mai and Mullin. We found the genus Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus, Helicotylenchus, Mesocriconema, Apelenchus, Dorilaymus, Tylenchus, Xiphinema, Mononchus, Discocriconemella, Trichodorus and other unidentified free-living nematodes. This information may allow the design of an integrated nematode management plan in Andean papaya crops.

8. Student Evaluation of Mathematical Statements Using Dynamic Geometry Software

Abstract

The research question addressed by this study is whether or not students made effective use of dynamic geometry software to explore the validity of a geometrical statement. Particular attention was paid to the use of definitions and the types of justifications students employed. Interviews conducted with six secondary mathematics preservice teachers were video and audio taped and video output of the interviewee's Geometer's Sketchpad (GSP) work was recorded on video tape. The interviews were transcribed along with a synchronized record of the GSP work. The transcripts and videotapes were analysed and coded. Results indicated that reasoning based on prototypically constructed categories and difficulty correctly parsing mathematical statements, especially the "for all" quantifier, interfered with the effective use of dynamic geometry software in justifying mathematical assertions. It may be that explicit instruction in how to make use of software programs to explore the validity of an assertion is needed. (Contains 1 footnote.)

57 muestras de 500 g de cafe fueron evaluadas para comparar la calidad de taza de cafe, en los sectores rurales de las zonas de San Juan del Oro en Sandia - Puno y Apolo en Franz Tamayo - La Paz. Ambas zonas de produccion se encuentran ubicadas en un piso ecologico que varia entre 1300 a 1400 m.s.n.m., siendo este un factor importante, ya que el cafe de altura de calidad se obtiene a mas de 1200 m.s.n.m. Para la evaluacion de las muestras en cada zona de produccion de San Juan del Oro y Apolo, se realizaron dos muestreos (500g cada uno), primero al 10% y segundo al 30% de las mejores muestras para la evaluacion de mezclas o blend. El mejor cafe de calidad se obtuvo 88.7 puntos de evaluacion de granos de cafe procedentes de San Juan del Oro y 86.5 puntos en Apolo. El mejor perfil organoleptico de taza se presento en cafe de San Juan del Oro con notas de "floral, miel, jazmin, complejo", en cambio en Apolo fue "citrico, floral, mandarina", asemejandose en las cualidades "floral, miel, y sabor a frutos". En base a la clasificacion de cafe de la Specialty Coffee Association of America el 55.4% del cafe estudiado esta en la categoria cafe especial y el 44.4% cafe de origen especial. Se concluye que el mejor cafe de calidad es de San Juan del Oro; no entanto en Apolo se observo una produccion con mejor conservacion de humedad en grano pergamino, determinandose que existen diferencias organolepticas en ambas zonas de produccion y perfiles organolepticos similares. 12. Experimental Tests of UltraFlex Array Designs in Low Earth Orbital and Geosynchronous Charging Environments

The present ground based investigations give the first definitive look describing the expected on-orbit charging behavior of Orion UltraFlex array coupons in the Low Earth Orbital and Geosynchronous Environments. Furthermore, it is important to note that the LEO charging environment also applies to the International Space Station as well as to the lunar mission charging environments. The GEO charging environment includes the bounding case for all lunar orbital and lunar surface mission environments. The UltraFlex thin film photovoltaic array technology has been targeted to become the sole power system for life support and on-orbit power for the manned Aires Crew Exploration Vehicle. It is therefore, crucial to gain an understanding of the complex charging behavior to answer some of the basic performance and survivability issues in an attempt to ascertain that a single UltraFlex array design will be able to cope with the projected worst case LEO and GEO charging environments. Testing was limited to four array coupons, two coupons each from two different array manufactures, Emcore and Spectrolab. The layout of each array design is identical and varies only in the actual cell technology used. The individual array cells from each manufacturer have an antireflection layered coating and come in two different varieties either uncoated (only AR coating) or coated with a thin conducting ITO layer. The LEO Plasma tests revealed that all four coupons passed the arc threshold -120 V bias tests. GEO electron gun charging tests revealed that only front side area of ITO coated coupons passed tests. Only the Emcore AR array passed backside Stage 2 GEO Tests.

The purpose of the experimental tests is to gain an understanding of the complex charging behavior to answer some of the basic performance and survivability issues to ascertain if a single UltraFlex array design will be able to cope with the projected worst case LEO and GEO charging environments. Stage 1 LEO plasma testing revealed that all four arrays successfully passed arc threshold bias tests down to -240 V. Stage 2 GEO electron gun charging tests revealed that only the front side area of indium tin oxide coated array designs successfully passed the arc frequency tests

Abstract

The biochemical response to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA)—so-called “treatment response”—strongly predicts long-term outcome in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). Several long-term prognostic models based solely on the treatment response have been developed that are widely used to risk stratify PBC patients and guide their management. However, they do not take other prognostic variables into account, such as the stage of the liver disease. We sought to improve existing long-term prognostic models of PBC using data from the UK-PBC Research Cohort. We performed Cox's proportional hazards regression analysis of diverse explanatory variables in a derivation cohort of 1,916 UDCA-treated participants. We used nonautomatic backward selection to derive the best-fitting Cox model, from which we derived a multivariable fractional polynomial model. We combined linear predictors and baseline survivor functions in equations to score the risk of a liver transplant or liver-related death occurring within 5, 10, or 15 years. We validated these risk scores in an independent cohort of 1,249 UDCA-treated participants. The best-fitting model consisted of the baseline albumin and platelet count, as well as the bilirubin, transaminases, and alkaline phosphatase, after 12 months of UDCA. In the validation cohort, the 5-, 10-, and 15-year risk scores were highly accurate (areas under the curve: >0.90). Conclusions: The prognosis of PBC patients can be accurately evaluated using the UK-PBC risk scores. They may be used to identify high-risk patients for closer monitoring and second-line therapies, as well as low-risk patients who could potentially be followed up in primary care. Abstract

In the gold mining Witwatersrand Basin of South Africa, efflorescent mineral crusts are a common occurrence on and nearby tailings dumps during the dry season. The crusts are readily soluble and generate acidic, metal- and sulphate-rich solutions on dissolution. In this study, the metal content of efflorescent crusts at an abandoned gold mine tailings dump was used to characterise surface and groundwater discharges from the site. Geochemical modelling of the pH of the solution resulting from the dissolution of the crusts was used to better understand the crusts' potential impact on water chemistry. The study involved two approaches: (i) conducting leaching experiments on oxidised and unoxidised tailings using artificial rainwater and dilute sulphuric acid and correlating the composition of crusts to these leachates and (ii) modelling the dissolution of the crusts in order to gain insight into their mineralogy and their potential impact on receiving waters. The findings suggested that there were two chemically distinct discharges from the site, namely an aluminium- and magnesium-rich surface water plume and an iron-rich groundwater plume. The first plume was observed to originate from the oxidised tailings following leaching with rainwater while the second plume originated from the underlying unoxidised tailings with leaching by sulphuric acid. Both groups of minerals forming from the respective plumes were found to significantly lower the pH of the receiving water with simulations of their dissolution found to be within 0.2 pH units of experimental values. It was observed that metals in a low abundance within the crust (for example, iron) had a stronger influence on the pH of the resulting solutions than metals in a greater abundance (aluminium or magnesium). Techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and in situ mineral determination techniques such as remote sensing can effectively determine the dominant mineralogy. However, the minerals or metals incorporated through solid solution into bulk mineralogy that dominates the chemistry of the solutions upon their dissolution may occur in minor quantities that can only be predicted using chemical analysis. Their mineralogy can be predicted using geochemical modelling and can provide a set of hypothetical minerals that upon dissolution yield a solution similar to that of the actual crusts. Abstract

Mine leachates from gold tailings impoundments usually contain elevated concentrations of metals and sulphates that impact negatively on water quality. This study was aimed at assessing the leachability of such metals from tailings by rainwater. Oxidised and unoxidised tailings were leached experimentally and through simulations using the PHREEQC geochemical modelling code. The results revealed that the majority of readily leachable metals were held in secondary mineral phases, mainly sulphates. A good agreement between experimental and modelling techniques was obtained, indicating the potential use of geochemical modelling in future metal release studies for the site. A list of reactive minerals for the tailings material was compiled. These minerals may or may not be present in the tailings; however, the list provides a means of estimating future reactivity or bulk metal release from the tailings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Trust in business corporations has been recognized as critical for long-term financial success, yet organizational trustworthiness has been threatened by recent corporate behaviors that have severely impacted public perceptions. This paper incorporates a study of 340 MBA students from three American universities to provide information about perceptions associated with organizational trustworthiness and just behavior in organizations. Data presented from this study demonstrates that organizational trustworthiness and justice are two separate but related constructs. Demographic factors including gender, age, and race are also identified as statistically significant factors that impact perceptions about trustworthiness and justice, and the concept of the individual mediating lens is suggested as a factor that impacts perceptions.
