1. Exploring Superconductivity: The Interplay of Electronic Orders in Topological Quantum Materials

Abstract

Topological quantum materials hold great promise for future technological applications. Their unique electronic properties, such as protected surface states and exotic quasiparticles, offer opportunities for designing novel electronic devices, spintronics, and quantum information processing. The origin of the interplay between various electronic orders in topological quantum materials, such as superconductivity and magnetism, remains unclear, particularly whether these electronic orders cooperate, compete, or simply coexist. Since the 2000s, the combination of topology and matter has sparked a tremendous surge of interest among theoreticians and experimentalists alike. Novel theoretical descriptions and predictions, as well as complex experimental setups confirming or refuting these theories, continuously appear in renowned journals. This review aims to provide conceptual tools to understand the fundamental concepts of this ever-growing field. Superconductivity and its historical development will serve as a second pillar alongside topological materials. Abstract

Veterinarians have to face many communicative challenges in their professional capacity. Successful professional communication increases satisfaction among pet owners, staff members and colleagues, and ultimately also the veterinarians’ own satisfaction. On the other hand, unsuccessful communication can easily lead to rejection, distrust and dissatisfaction.However, communicative skills are not explicitly taught as part of the compulsory courses in veterinary medicine in Germany.The position paper of the GMA Veterinary Medicine Committee and the DVG work group Didactics and Communication Competence describes the importance of successful communication for working veterinarians as well as the training situation in Germany and addresses topics that are often discussed in connection with the implementation. The authors come to the conclusion that there is both a necessity and a possibility for the introduction of communicative training content and provide recommendations that are intended to support the sustainable introduction of courses and exams to develop the communicative skills of veterinary students.

3. 'It's hard to speak up': Lessons learned from engaging U.S. white college men in conversations on racism

Abstract

Objective: This position paper draws on findings from the Straight White College Men Project, a qualitative study with heterosexual white college male participants across college campuses in the United States. The purpose of the larger project was to explore and understand how participants perceived institutional and community diversity issues; how they conceptualized their own privileges; and how they articulated their own responsibility to engage in social change. Thus, this paper delivers “lessons learned” from engaging white men in conversations on racism and to provide recommendations for medical educators in the U.S. and in Europe.Methods: Following purposeful sampling methods using expert nominators, data were collected in phenomenological focus groups at 10 U.S. 4-year universities. Focus groups included 3 to 8 participants and were 60 to 90 minutes in length. Analysis included open and axial coding and two themes emerged from a single question focusing on students’ potential dissent of racist family or peer comments. Results: Participants struggled articulating how and in what contexts they would challenge family members or friends on inappropriate language or behavior. Reasons for their reticence included struggling to confront parents, not wanting to ruin male friendships, or jeopardizing being ousted by the male peer group. Conclusion: Educators must find ways to help male university students explore their privileges and proclivity to engage in oppressive behaviors. Men also need to understand how their inactions perpetuate systemic oppression and create environments in which minoritized individuals cannot thrive. Recommendations for medical school educators are provided.

Abstract

Since 2012, skills labs have been set up to teach practical skills at veterinary training facilities in the German-speaking world. In addition to didactic considerations, ethical points of view in terms of animal protection form the basis of the increasing significance of skills labs in veterinary medicine. Not least because of the quality standards in veterinary medicine training which apply across Europe, the link between veterinary medicine training facilities is particularly significant when it comes to the setting up and development of skills labs. The Committee on Veterinary Medicine is therefore not only interested in exchange and cooperation within veterinary medicine, but also sees an opportunity for mutual gain in the link with the Society for Medical Education Committee “Practical Skills”.

Abstract

The combination of single photon emitters (quantum dots) and tailored metal nanoparticles with defined size and shape allows a detailed study of the interaction between light and matter. The enhanced optical near-field of the nanoparticles can strongly influence the absorption and emission of nearby fluorescent quantum dots. We show that a controlled spatial arrangement enables the analysis and understanding of polarization dependent coupling between a metal nanoparticle and few or single fluorescent quantum dots. Abstract

Advancing climate change increases the risk of future infectious disease outbreaks, particularly of zoonotic diseases, by affecting the abundance and spread of viral vectors. Concerningly, there are currently no approved drugs for some relevant diseases, such as the arboviral diseases chikungunya, dengue or zika. The development of novel inhibitors takes 10–15 years to reach the market and faces critical challenges in preclinical and clinical trials, with approximately 30% of trials failing due to side effects. As an early response to emerging infectious diseases, CavitOmiX allows for a rapid computational screening of databases containing 3D point-clouds representing binding sites of approved drugs to identify candidates for off-label use. This process, known as drug repurposing, reduces the time and cost of regulatory approval. Here, we present potential approved drug candidates for off-label use, targeting the ADP-ribose binding site of Alphavirus chikungunya non-structural protein 3. Additionally, we demonstrate a novel in silico drug design approach, considering potential side effects at the earliest stages of drug development. We use a genetic algorithm to iteratively refine potential inhibitors for (i) reduced off-target activity and (ii) improved binding to different viral variants or across related viral species, to provide broad-spectrum and safe antivirals for the future. Abstract

We launch surface plasmons from one end of a silver nanowire by asymmetric illumination with white light and use plasmon-to-light scattering at the nanowire ends to probe spectroscopically the plasmonic Fabry-Perot wire modes. The spectral positions of the maxima and minima in the scattered intensity from both nanowire ends are found to be either in phase or out-of phase, depending on the nanowire length and the spectral range. This behavior can be explained by a generalized Fabry-Perot model. The turnover-point between the two regimes is sensitive to the surface plasmon round trip losses and thus opens a new possibility for detecting changes of the optical absorption in the nanowire environment., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, (c) 2012 OSA

Abstract

We investigate the stationary nonequilibrium states of a quasi one-dimensional system of heavy particles whose interaction is mediated by purely elastic collisions with light particles, in contact at the boundary with two heat baths with fixed temperatures $T^+$ and $T^-$. It is shown that Fourier law is satisfied with a thermal conductivity proportional to $\sqrt{T(x)}$ where $T(x)$ is the local temperature. 50. The controversial piston in the thermodynamic limit

Abstract

We consider the evolution of a system composed of $N$ non-interacting point particles of mass $m$ in a container divided in two regions by a movable adiabatic wall (adiabatic piston). In this talk we discuss the thermodynamic limit where the area $A$ of the container, the number $N$ of particles, and the mass $M$ of the piston go to infinity keeping $\frac{A}M $ and $\frac{N}M $ fixed. We show that in this limit the motion of the piston is deterministic. Introducing simplifying assumptions we discuss the approach to equilibrium and we illustrate the results with numerical simulations. The comparison with the case of a system with finite $(A, N, M)$ will be presented.
