We have recently commissioned a novel infrared ($0.9-1.7$ $\mu$m) integral field spectrograph (IFS) called the Wide Integral Field Infrared Spectrograph (WIFIS). WIFIS is a unique instrument that offers a very large field-of-view (50$^{\prime\prime}$ x 20$^{\prime\prime}$) on the 2.3-meter Bok telescope at Kitt Peak, USA for seeing-limited observations at moderate spectral resolving power. The measured spatial sampling scale is $\sim1\times1^{\prime\prime}$ and its spectral resolving power is $R\sim2,500$ and $3,000$ in the $zJ$ ($0.9-1.35$ $\mu$m) and $H_{short}$ ($1.5-1.7$ $\mu$m) modes, respectively. WIFIS's corresponding etendue is larger than existing near-infrared (NIR) IFSes, which are mostly designed to work with adaptive optics systems and therefore have very narrow fields. For this reason, this instrument is specifically suited for studying very extended objects in the near-infrared such as supernovae remnants, galactic star forming regions, and nearby galaxies, which are not easily accessible by other NIR IFSes. This enables scientific programs that were not originally possible, such as detailed surveys of a large number of nearby galaxies or a full accounting of nucleosynthetic yields of Milky Way supernova remnants. WIFIS is also designed to be easily adaptable to be used with larger telescopes. In this paper, we report on the overall performance characteristics of the instrument, which were measured during our commissioning runs in the second half of 2017. We present measurements of spectral resolving power, image quality, instrumental background, and overall efficiency and sensitivity of WIFIS and compare them with our design expectations. A former member of the Hyades cluster, $\iota$ Horologii ($\iota$ Hor) is a planet-hosting Sun-like star which displays the shortest coronal activity cycle known to date ($P_{\rm cyc}\sim$ 1.6 yr). With an age of $\sim$$625$ Myr, $\iota$ Hor is also the youngest star with a detected activity cycle. The study of its magnetic properties holds the potential to provide fundamental information to understand the origin of cyclic activity and stellar magnetism in late-type stars. In this series of articles, we present the results of a comprehensive project aimed at studying the evolving magnetic field in this star and how this evolution influences its circumstellar environment. This paper summarizes the first stage of this investigation, with results from a long-term observing campaign of $\iota$ Hor using ground-based high-resolution spectropolarimetry. The analysis includes precise measurements of the magnetic activity and radial velocity of the star, and their multiple time-scales of variability. In combination with values reported in the literature, we show that the long-term chromospheric activity evolution of $\iota$ Hor follows a beating pattern, caused by the superposition of two periodic signals of similar amplitude at $P_{1} \simeq 1.97 \pm 0.02$ yr and $P_{2} \simeq 1.41 \pm 0.01$ yr. Additionally, using the most recent parameters for $\iota$ Hor b in combination with our activity and radial velocity measurements, we find that stellar activity dominates the radial velocity residuals, making the detection of additional planets in this system challenging. Finally, we report here the first measurements of the surface longitudinal magnetic field strength of $\iota$ Hor, which displays varying amplitudes within $\pm4$ G and served to estimate the rotation period of the star ($P_{\rm rot} =~7.70^{+0.18}_{-0.67}$ d)., Comment: 14 pages, 7 Figures, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS)

In the context of the high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio, high sensitivity, spectropolarimetric survey BritePol, which complements observations by the BRITE constellation of nanosatellites for asteroseismology, we are looking for and measuring the magnetic field of all stars brighter than V=4. In this paper, we present circularly polarised spectra obtained with HarpsPol at ESO in La Silla (Chile) and ESPaDOnS at CFHT (Hawaii) for 3 hot evolved stars: $\iota$ Car, HR 3890, and $\epsilon$ CMa. We detected a magnetic field in all 3 stars. Each star has been observed several times to confirm the magnetic detections and check for variability. The stellar parameters of the 3 objects were determined and their evolutionary status was ascertained employing evolution models computed with the Geneva code. $\epsilon$ CMa was already known and is confirmed to be magnetic, but our modeling indicates that it is located near the end of the main sequence, i.e. it is still in a core hydrogen burning phase. $\iota$ Car and HR 3890 are the first discoveries of magnetic hot supergiants located well after the end of the main sequence on the HR diagram. These stars are probably the descendants of main sequence magnetic massive stars. Their current field strength (a few G) is compatible with magnetic flux conservation during stellar evolution. We conducted a survey of seven magnetic O and eleven B-type stars with masses above $8M_{\odot}$ using the Very Large Array in the 1cm, 3cm and 13cm bands. The survey resulted in a detection of two O and two B-type stars. While the detected O-type stars - HD 37742 and HD 47129 - are in binary systems, the detected B-type stars, HD 156424 and ALS 9522, are not known to be in binaries. All four stars were detected at 3cm, whereas three were detected at 1cm and only one star was detected at 13cm. The detected B-type stars are significantly more radio luminous than the non-detected ones, which is not the case for O-type stars. The non-detections at 13cm are interpreted as due to thermal free-free absorption. Mass-loss rates were estimated using 3cm flux densities and were compared with theoretical mass-loss rates, which assume free-free emission. For HD 37742, the two values of the mass-loss rates were in good agreement, possibly suggesting that the radio emission for this star is mainly thermal. For the other three stars, the estimated mass-loss rates from radio observations were much higher than those expected from theory, suggesting either a possible contribution from non- thermal emission from the magnetic star or thermal or non-thermal emission due to interacting winds of the binary system, especially for HD 47129. All the detected stars are predicted to host centrifugal magnetospheres except HD 37742, which is likely to host a dynamical magnetosphere. The results from a spectro-polarimetric study of the planet-hosting Sun-like star, HD 147513 (G5V), are presented here. Robust detections of Zeeman signatures at all observed epochs indicate a surface magnetic field, with longitudinal magnetic field strengths varying between 1.0-3.2 G. Radial velocity variations from night to night modulate on a similar timescale to the longitudinal magnetic field measurements. These variations are therefore likely due to the rotational modulation of stellar active regions rather than the much longer timescale of the planetary orbit (Porb=528 d). Both the longitudinal magnetic field measurements and radial velocity variations are consistent with a rotation period of 10 +/- 2 days, which are also consistent with the measured chromospheric activity level of the star (log R'(HK)=-4.64). Together, these quantities indicate a low inclination angle, i~18 degrees. We present preliminary magnetic field maps of the star based on the above period and find a simple poloidal large-scale field. Chemical analyses of the star have revealed that it is likely to have undergone a barium-enrichment phase in its evolution because of a higher mass companion. Despite this, our study reveals that the star has a fairly typical activity level for its rotation period and spectral type. For several decades we have been cognizant of the presence of magnetic fields in early-type stars, but our understanding of their magnetic properties has recently (over the last decade) expanded due to the new generation of high-resolution spectropolarimeters (ESPaDOnS at CFHT, Narval at TBL, HARPSpol at ESO). The most detailed surface magnetic field maps of intermediate-mass stars have been obtained through Doppler imaging techniques, allowing us to probe the small-scale structure of these stars. Thanks to the effort of large programmes (e.g. the MiMeS project), we have, for the first time, addressed key issues regarding our understanding of the magnetic properties of massive (M > 8 M_sun) stars, whose magnetic fields were only first detected about fifteen years ago. In this proceedings article we review the spectropolarimetric observations and statistics derived in recent years that have formed our general understanding of stellar magnetism in early-type stars. We also discuss how these observations have furthered our understanding of the interactions between the magnetic field and stellar wind, as well as the consequences and connections of this interaction with other observed phenomena., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. In this paper we report 23 magnetic field measurements of the B3IV star HD 23478: 12 obtained from high resolution Stokes $V$ spectra using the ESPaDOnS (CFHT) and Narval (TBL) spectropolarimeters, and 11 from medium resolution Stokes $V$ spectra obtained with the DimaPol spectropolarimeter (DAO). HD 23478 was one of two rapidly rotating stars identified as potential "centrifugal magnetosphere" hosts based on IR observations from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. We derive basic physical properties of this star including its mass ($M=6.1^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\,M_\odot$), effective temperature ($T_{\rm eff}=20\pm2\,$kK), radius ($R=2.7^{+1.6}_{-0.9}\,R_\odot$), and age ($\tau_{\rm age}=3^{+37}_{-1}\,$Myr). We repeatedly detect weakly-variable Zeeman signatures in metal, He and H lines in all our observations corresponding to a longitudinal magnetic field of $\langle B_z\rangle\approx-2.0\,$kG. The rotational period is inferred from Hipparcos photometry ($P_{\rm rot}=1.0498(4)\,$d). Under the assumption of the Oblique Rotator Model, our obsevations yield a surface dipole magnetic field of strength $B_d\geq9.5\,$kG that is approximately aligned with the stellar rotation axis. We confirm the presence of strong and broad H$\alpha$ emission and gauge the volume of this star's centrifugal magnetosphere to be consistent with those of other H$\alpha$ emitting centrifugal magnetosphere stars based on the large inferred Alfv\'en to Kepler radius ratio., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

We present our analysis of 6 years of ESPaDOnS spectropolarimetry of the magnetic $\beta$ Cep star $\xi^1$ CMa (B0.7 IV). This high-precision magnetometry is consistent with a rotational period $P{\rm rot} >$ 40 yr. Absorption line profiles can be reproduced with a non-rotating model. We constrain $R_*$, $L_*$, and the stellar age via a Baade-Wesselink analysis. Spindown due to angular momentum loss via the magnetosphere predicts an extremely long rotational period if the magnetic dipole $B_{\rm d} > 6$ kG, a strength also inferred by the best-fit sinusoids to the longitudinal magnetic field measurements $B_{\rm Z}$ when phased with a 60-year $P_{\rm rot}$., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, proceedings of the IAU Symposium 307 held in Geneva in June 2014

Magnetic B-type stars are often host to Centrifugal Magnetospheres (CMs). Here we describe the results of a population study encompassing the full sample of known magnetic early B-type stars, focusing on those with detectable CMs. We present revised rotational and magnetic parameters for some stars, clarifying their positions on the rotation-confinement diagram, and? find that plasma densities within their CMs are much lower than those predicted by centrifugal breakout., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, proceedings of the IAU Symposium 307 held in Geneva in June 2014

Recently announced magnetic models for four SPB and {\beta} Cep stars, along with magnetic detections for two additional stars, have potentially doubled the number of known magnetic SPB and \beta Cep stars (see Grunhut et al., these proceedings). We have reanalyzed the published data and re-reduced archival low resolution spectropolarimetry collected with the FORS1/2 instruments at VLT on which the models were based, and compare them with high resolution data from the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT, investigating previously noted inconsistencies between results from the two instruments., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, StarPol: Stellar Polarimetry from Birth to Death

We report the systematic detection of magnetic fields in massive (M > 5 M$_\odot$) late-type supergiants, using spectropolarimetric observations obtained with ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Our observations reveal detectable Stokes V Zeeman signatures in Least-Squares Deconvolved mean line profiles in one-third of the observed sample of more than 30 stars. The signatures are sometimes complex, revealing multiple reversals across the line. The corresponding longitudinal magnetic field is seldom detected, although our longitudinal field error bars are typically 0.3 G ($1\sigma$). These characteristics suggest topologically complex magnetic fields, presumably generated by dynamo action. The Stokes V signatures of some targets show clear time variability, indicating either rotational modulation or intrinsic evolution of the magnetic field. We also observe a weak correlation between the unsigned longitudinal magnetic field and the CaII K core emission equivalent width of the active G2Iab supergiant $\beta$~Dra and the G8Ib supergiant $\epsilon$~Gem., Comment: 8 pages, 1 table, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS
