This study examined the effects of neighborhood context on juvenile recidivism to determine if neighborhoods influence the likelihood of reoffending. Although a large body of literature exists regarding the impact of environmental factors on delinquency, very little is known about the effects of these factors on juvenile recidivism. The sample analyzed includes 7,061 delinquent male juveniles committed to community-based programs in Philadelphia, of which 74% are Black, 13% Hispanic, and 11% White. Since sample youths were nested in neighborhoods, a hierarchical generalized linear model was employed to predict recidivism across three general categories of recidivism offenses: drug, violent, and property. Results indicate that predictors vary across the types of offenses and that drug offending differs from property and violent offending. Neighborhood-level factors were found to influence drug offense recidivism, but were not significant predictors of violent offenses, property offenses, or an aggregated recidivism measure, despite contrary expectations. Implications stemming from the finding that neighborhood context influences only juvenile drug recidivism are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to illustrate the use of propensity scores for creating comparison groups, partially controlling for pretreatment course selection bias, and estimating the treatment effects of selected courses on the development of moral reasoning in undergraduate students. Specifically, we used a sample of convenience for comparing differences in moral reasoning development scores among students enrolled in intergroup dialogue, service learning, psychology and philosophy courses with those of an introductory sociology course. Adopting a propensity score approach included reviewing the empirical literature for its guidance in substantiating the reasons for including pretreatment variables (i.e., pretreatment course-taking behaviors, race, sex, political identification, need for cognition, major, age, pretreatment moral reasoning scores) in our analysis, measuring these variables, and reducing them into a single composite propensity score for each student in our analytic sample. This score then served as the basis for creating a new comparison group and for allowing us to estimate unbiased (or less biased) course-related treatment effects on moral reasoning development. Implications for higher education researchers are discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to identify factors that create a positive climate for diversity and to demonstrate how these factors predict outcomes related to achieving a positive campus climate for diversity. Based on survey data collected from 437 staff members employed at a large, public, predominantly White University in the Midwest, results suggest that the institution's ability to achieve a positive climate for diversity reflects not only the personal characteristics of the staff member (race, gender, education level, and age) but also their perceptions of their immediate work environment. Implications are discussed.

This study examines the factors that contribute to 336 faculty members' decisions to incorporate diversity-related content into their course materials. The final model has an 86% success rate in predicting likelihood to incorporate. Significant predictors include a race by gender interaction, participation in diversity-related activities, and perceived departmental commitment to diversity. (Contains 4 tables and 4 notes.)

The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that predict students' perceptions of their institution's success in achieving a positive climate for diversity. This study examines a sample of 544 students at a large, public, predominantly White Mid-Western institution. Results show that students' perceptions of the institution's ability to achieve a positive climate for diversity is a reflection of students' precollege interactions with diverse peers and the institution's ability to incorporate diversity-related issues into its curriculum. Results also indicate that these perceptions differ by race and gender. Implications for institutional researchers are discussed.

A survey of seven institutions revealed that the institution's student assessment purposes, its administrative support patterns, and its faculty instructional impacts are significant predictors of faculty satisfaction with their institution's approach to and support for student assessment. External influences on, faculty uses, and perceived benefits of professional development practices for student assessment are significant predictors of faculty involvement with student assessment. The city of Philadelphia has long been criticized for the amount of litter strewn about its streets. To more fully understand this problem, a recent city initiative, the Clean PHL program, sent out individuals to rate the amount of litter on more than 28,000 blocks across the city. We used multilevel models to analyze these data to identify both address-level and block group–level correlates of increased litter ratings. The results show that being on an arterial or collector street, the late summer and early fall seasons, and exposure to food-serving businesses and vacant properties are linked with the odds of increased litter, whereas proximity to a park is linked with decreased litter. We also found that increased block group–level disadvantage is directly related to increased litter and serves to moderate the relationships between some address-level predictors and litter. Background: Verbal short-term memory (STM) and the related ability, working memory (WM), are widely understood to be integral components of language production and comprehension. However, assessment of these abilities in people with aphasia is hampered by a lack of valid, standardized measures that are clinically appropriate. Focusing primarily on verbal STM, we held a series of five focus groups with speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to understand better their current clinical practices and their beliefs and attitudes regarding assessment of verbal STM in aphasia. Aims: The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes, beliefs and preferences of clinical SLPs to determine: (1) current practices related to verbal STM assessment; (2) the extent to which practices reflect current theories of aphasia and the role of verbal STM in language processing; and (3) practical considerations regarding aphasia assessment in clinical practice. Methods & Procedures: Five focus groups were conducted using a semi-structured interview protocol with a total of 44 SLPs. Grounded theory methodology was used to collect, code and analyse the data. Codes were reviewed to identify emerging themes. Themes were compared to explore meta-themes, connections and potential theoretical frameworks. Outcomes & Results: Five main themes were identified: (1) The theoretical understanding that clinical SLPs have regarding the role of verbal STM in aphasia is not always consistent with clinical practice; (2) Clinical SLPs highly value functionally relevant assessments; (3) The intense time constraints in clinical practice affect all aspects of assessment; (4) Clinical SLPs feel that there is a lack of appropriate tests for assessment of STM in aphasia; and (5) Clinical SLPs prefer tests that are comprehensive, easy to administer and psychometrically sound. Conclusions: Clinical SLPs report a lack of standardized measures to assess STM in individuals with aphasia. Researchers are met with several challenges in the development of these tests including effective communication with clinicians regarding the benefit of verbal STM assessments, especially as it relates to functional skills, and the creation of a test that is comprehensive yet simple, quick and easy to administer. We examine how the densities of adult and juvenile drug offenders within neighborhoods might be linked to the odds of juvenile recidivism due to drug sales and drug possession. To do so, we analyze a dataset of 5,528 juvenile offenders adjudicated in Philadelphia's Family Court between 1996 and 2004 using multilevel models to estimate the effects of both individual- and neighborhood-level indicators on the odds of recidivism. The results indicate that community context is significantly related to the odds of juvenile recidivism due to drug sales, but not due to drug possession. Neighborhood levels of adult and juvenile drug offender densities are also shown to moderate the links between individual-level characteristics and the odds of juvenile drug sales recidivism.
