A study of 135 journalism and mass communication master's programs shows that 60% of the programs are of dual focus, preparing students for teaching/research and professional training, 12% focussed on teaching/research only and 28% on professional programs. The diversity in focus affects the curricula and structure of the programs. The lack of agreement among colleges about what journalism graduate education should consist of reflects the diversity in the orientations of these programs.

A survey of the status of the contribution of part-time faculty members to education in journalism and mass communication revealed that part-time teachers play a prominent role in higher education despite their low salaries and status when compared to that of full-time faculty members. Guidelines on the recruitment and supervision of part-time faculty and evaluation of their work must be formulated, and they must treated as equal to full-time teachers.

Research has revealed that the introduction of newspapers as a subject of study in the school curriculum helped to cultivate newspaper reading habits in adults. Teachers should be trained to teach the contents of a newspaper, its production and its various features to provide substantial knowledge about newspapers instead of merely cultivating a reading habit. Newspaper organizations can help formulate programs to introduce the newspaper into classrooms, which will ultimately help their industry.

A study of the effectiveness of grammarcheckers in journalism classes is performed on 120 journalism students in a beginning news writing class. Results show that grammar checkers still have notadvanced to a level wherein they could be useful in journalism classes as a regular part of instruction. Furthermore, the use of grammar checkers in these classes could only detract students from learning.
