Search

Stellar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have recently attracted much attention for their impacts on stellar evolution and surrounding exoplanets. RS CVn-type stars could produce large flares, and therefore may have frequent CMEs. Here we report the capture of a possible CME or chromospheric condensation on the RS CVn-type star II Pegasi (II Peg) using high-resolution spectroscopic observation. Two flares were detected during the observation, and the low limits of the flare energies are of the order of $10^{33}$ erg and $10^{34}$ erg, respectively. Using mean spectrum subtraction, the H$_{\alpha}$ residual shows red asymmetry during the flares, and the redshifted broad emission components are probably caused by chromospheric condensation or coronal rain. Moreover, a far redshifted extra emission component with a high bulk velocity of 429 km s$^{-1}$ was observed during the second flare and is probably due to a prominence eruption. The velocity greatly exceeds the star's escape velocity, which means that this eruption can develop into a CME. The CME mass is estimated to be 0.83-1.48 $\times 10^{20}$ g, which is slightly larger than the value expected from solar flare-CME extrapolation. The kinetic energy of CME, derived to be 0.76-1.15 $\times 10^{35}$ erg, is less than the kinetic energy extrapolated from solar events. Additionally, we could not completely rule out the possibility of chromospheric condensation resulting in the far redshifted extra emission. Finally, there is a blueshifted broad component in the subtracted H$_{\alpha}$ profile derived using synthesized spectral subtraction when no flare happened, and its behavior is associated with the H$_{\alpha}$ activity features.

The lightcurves of asteroids are essential for determining their physical characteristics, including shape, spin, size, and surface composition. However, most asteroids are missing some of these basic physical parameters due to lack of photometric data. Although a few telescopes or surveys are specially designed for photometric lightcurve observations of asteroids, many ground-based and space-based sky surveys for hunting new exoplanets, transient events, etc., should capture numerous small Solar System objects. This will benefit the physical studies of these objects. In order to extract data of these moving objects from time-domain photometric surveys, we have developed a new method using the model tree algorithm in the field of machine learning. A dedicated module is built to automatically identify moving objects in dataset, and extract their photometric and astrometric data. As the first application of this novel method, we have analyzed data in five fields of the Yunnan-Hong Kong wide field photometric (YNHK) survey, from which 538 lightcurves of 211 asteroids are successfully extracted. Meanwhile, we also tested the method based on the data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, and the result proves the reliability of our method. With derived lightcurves of 13 asteroids from the YNHK survey, we have determined their synodic spin periods, among which the periods of 4 asteroids are estimated for the first time. In future, we are going to apply this method to search for small objects in the outer part of the Solar System from the Chinese Space Station Telescope survey.

We present the results of time-resolved high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the very active RS Canum Venaticorum (RS CVn) star SZ Piscium (SZ Psc), obtained during two consecutive observing nights on October 24 and 25, 2011. Several optical chromospheric activity indicators are analyzed using the spectral subtraction technique, which show the remarkably different behavior between two nights. Gradually blue-shifted and strengthened excess absorption features presented in the series of the subtracted spectra (especially for the H$_{\alpha}$, He I D$_{3}$ and H$_{\beta}$ lines), as a result of active stellar prominence that is rising its height along the line of our sight, was detected in the observations on October 24. This prominence activation event was probably associated with the subsequently occurred optical flare, and part of that flare decay phase was hunted in the observations on October 25. The flare was characterized by the prominent He I D$_{3}$ line emission, as well as stronger chromospheric emission in the H$_{\alpha}$, H$_{\beta}$ and other active lines. The gradual decay of flare was accompanied by an obviously developmental absorption feature in the blue wing of the H$_{\alpha}$ and other active lines, which could be explained as cool post-flare loops which projected against the bright flare background. Therefore, a series of possibly associated magnetic activity phenomena, including flare-related prominence activation, optical flare and post-flare loops, were detected during our observations.

We present a study of high-resolution spectra of RS Canum Venaticorum (RS CVn), a prototype of active binary systems. Our data were obtained from 1998 to 2017 using different telescopes. We analyze the chromospheric activity indicators Ca II IRT, H$_{\alpha}$, Na I D$_{1}$, D$_{2}$ doublet, He I D$_{3}$, and H$_{\beta}$ using a spectral subtraction technique. The chromospheric emission stems mainly from the K2 IV primary star, while the F5 V secondary star only shows weak emission features in a few of our spectra. We find excess absorption features in the subtracted H$_{\alpha}$ lines and other activity indicators from spectra taken near primary eclipse, which we ascribe to prominence-like material associated with the primary star. We estimate size limits of these tentative prominences based on the geometry of the binary system, and investigate the physical properties of the strongest prominence. An optical flare, characterized by He I D$_{3}$ line emission, together with stronger emission in other activity lines, was detected. The flare energy is roughly comparable to strong flares observed on other RS CVn-type stars. The chromospherically active longitudes of RS CVn most frequently appear near the two quadratures of the system and display changes between observing runs, which indicates an ongoing evolution of its active regions.

We present the study on continuous high-resolution spectroscopic observations of two long-period single-lined RS Canum Venaticorum (RS CVn) binary stars IM Pegasi (IM Peg) and $\sigma$ Geminorum ($\sigma$ Gem), obtained with the Hertzsprung SONG telescope during the 2015-2016 season. Chromospheric activity indicators H$_{\alpha}$, Na I D$_{1}$, D$_{2}$ doublet, He I D$_{3}$, and H$_{\beta}$ lines have been analyzed by using the spectral subtraction technique. The expected chromospheric emission features in the H$_{\alpha}$, Na I D$_{1}$, D$_{2}$ doublet, and H$_{\beta}$ lines confirm that both of two stars are very active systems. In the spectra, the He I D$_{3}$ line had been always detected in absorption feature. Although the behavior of chromospheric activity indicators is very similar for both stars, the activity level of IM Peg is much stronger than that of $\sigma$ Gem. Moreover, the EW variations of the H$_{\alpha}$, He I D$_{3}$, and H$_{\beta}$ line subtractions correlate well and show different behavior among different orbital cycles, which indicates the presence and evolution of activity longitudes over the surface of two stars. Furthermore, the subtracted H$_{\alpha}$ line profile is usually asymmetric. The red-shifted excess absorption features could be interpreted as a strong down-flow of cool absorbing material, while the blue-shifted emission component is probably caused by up-flow of hot materials through microflare events.

We study the surface composition of asteroids with visible and/or infrared spectroscopy. For example, asteroid taxonomy is based on the spectral features or multiple color indices in visible and near-infrared wavelengths. The composition of asteroids gives key information to understand their origin and evolution. However, we lack compositional information for faint asteroids due to limits of ground-based observational instruments. In the near future, the Chinese Space Survey telescope (CSST) will provide multiple colors and spectroscopic data for asteroids of apparent magnitude brighter than 25 mag and 23 mag, respectively. For the aim of analysis of the CSST spectroscopic data, we applied an algorithm using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to establish a preliminary classification model for asteroid taxonomy according to the design of the survey module of CSST. Using the SMASS II spectra and the Bus-Binzel taxonomy system, our ANN classification tool composed of 5 individual ANNs is constructed, and the accuracy of this classification system is higher than 92 %. As the first application of our ANN tool, 64 spectra of 42 asteroids obtained in 2006 and 2007 by us with the 2.16-m telescope in the Xinglong station (Observatory Code 327) of National Astronomical Observatory of China are analyzed. The predicted labels of these spectra using our ANN tool are found to be reasonable when compared to their known taxonomic labels. We present a Zeeman-Doppler imaging study of two weak-line T Tauri stars TAP 4 and TAP 40, based on the high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations with ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in November 2013, in the framework of the MaTYSSE large programme. We apply two Zeeman-Doppler imaging codes to the Stokes I and V profiles to reconstruct their brightness and large-scale magnetic field images. The results given by the two imaging codes are in good agreement with each other. TAP 4 shows a large polar cool spot and several intermediate-latitude warm spots on its surface, whereas TAP 40 exhibits very weak variations in its Stokes I profiles suggesting a mostly unspotted photosphere. We detect Zeeman signatures in the Stokes V profiles of both stars. The reconstructed magnetic maps reveal dominantly toroidal fields, which enclose about 60 per cent of the total magnetic energy for both of TAP 4 and TAP 40. Both stars show prominent circular ring features of the azimuthal magnetic field. We derive a solar-like surface differential rotation on TAP 4 from the tomographic modelling. The brightness image of TAP 4 is used to predict the radial velocity jitters induced by its activity. After filtering out the activity jitter, the RMS of its RVs is reduced from 1.7 km s$^{-1}$ to 0.2 km s$^{-1}$, but we do not detect any periodic signals in the filtered RVs of TAP 4, implying that it is unlikely to host a close-in exoplanet more massive than $\sim$3.5 M$_{\rm Jup}$ at 0.1 au., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Tsinghua University-Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS) aims to detect fast-evolving transients in the Universe, which has led to the discovery of thousands of short-period variables and eclipsing binaries since 2020. In this paper, we present the observed properties of 125 flare stars identified by the TMTS within the first two years, with an attempt to constrain their eruption physics. As expected, most of these flares were recorded in late-type red stars with $G_{\rm BP}-G_{\rm RP}$ > 2.0 mag, however, the flares associated with bluer stars tend to be on average more energetic and have broader profiles. The peak flux (F_peak) of the flare is found to depend strongly on the equivalent duration (ED) of the energy release, i.e., $F_{{\rm peak}} \propto {\rm ED}^{0.72\pm0.04}$, which is consistent with results derived from the Kepler and Evryscope samples. This relation is likely related to the magnetic loop emission, while -- for the more popular non-thermal electron heating model -- a specific time evolution may be required to generate this relation. We notice that flares produced by hotter stars have a flatter $F_{{\rm peak}} \propto {\rm ED}$ relation compared to that from cooler stars. This is related to the statistical discrepancy in light-curve shape of flare events with different colors. In spectra from LAMOST, we find that flare stars have apparently stronger H alpha emission than inactive stars, especially at the low temperature end, suggesting that chromospheric activity plays an important role in producing flares. On the other hand, the subclass having frequent flares are found to show H alpha emission of similar strength in their spectra to that recorded with only a single flare but similar effective temperature, implying that the chromospheric activity may not be the only trigger for eruptions., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables, refereed version. We present analysis of the starspot properties and chromospheric activity on HD 134319 using high precision photometry by TESS in sectors 14-16 (T1), 21-23 (T2) and high-resolution spectroscopy by OHP/ELODIE and Keck/HIRES during years 1995-2013. We applied a two-spot model with GLS determined period $P=4.436391\pm0.00137$ day to model chunks sliding over TESS light curve, and measured relative equivalent widths of Ca II H and K, H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ emissions by subtracting overall spectrum from individual spectrum. It was found that a two-spot configuration, i.e. a primary, slowly evolving and long-lasting spot (P) plus a secondary and rapidly evolving spot (S), was capable of explaining the data, although the actual starspot distribution is unable to derived from collected data. Despite the spot radius-latitude degeneracy revealed in the best-fit solutions, a sudden alternation between P and S radii followed by gradual decrease of S in T1 and the decrease of both P and S from T1 to T2 were significant, corresponding to the evolution of magnetic activity. Besides, S revealed rotation and oscillatory longitude migration synchronized to P in T1, but held much larger migration than P in T2. This might indicate the evolution of internal magnetic configuration. Chromospheric activity indicators were found to tightly correlated with each other and revealed rotational modulation as well as a long-term decrease of emissions, implying the existence and evolution of magnetic acitivity on HD 134319., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures

We apply the variational autoencoder (VAE) to the LAMOST-K2 low-resolution spectra to detect the magnetic activity of the stars in the K2 field. After the training on the spectra of the selected inactive stars, the VAE model can efficiently generate the synthetic reference templates needed by the spectral subtraction procedure, without knowing any stellar parameters. Then we detect the peculiar spectral features, such as chromospheric emissions, strong nebular emissions and lithium absorptions, in our sample. We measure the emissions of the chromospheric activity indicators, H$\alpha$ and Ca II infrared triplet (IRT) lines, to quantify the stellar magnetic activity. The excess emissions of H$\alpha$ and Ca II IRT lines of the active stars are correlated well to the rotational periods and the amplitudes of light curves derived from the K2 photometry. We degrade the LAMOST spectra to simulate the slitless spectra of the China Space Station Telescope (CSST) and apply the VAE to the simulated data. For cool active stars, we reveal a good agreement between the equivalent widths (EWs) of H$\alpha$ line derived from the spectra with two resolutions. The result indicates the ability of identifying the magnetically active stars in the future CSST survey, which will deliver an unprecedented large database of low-resolution spectra as well as simultaneous multi-band photometry of stars., Comment: 13 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS. High-precision transit observations provide excellent opportunities for characterizing the physical properties of exoplanetary systems. These physical properties supply many pieces of information for unvealing the internal structure, external atmosphere, and dynamical history of the planets. We present revised properties of transiting systems WASP-35 and HAT-P-30/WASP-51 through analyzing newly available TESS photometry and ground-based observations obtained at 1m telescope of Yunnan Observatories as well as from the literature. The improved system parameters are consistent with the previous results. Furthermore, we find that HAT-P-30b/WASP-51b's transits show significant timing variation which cannot be explained by decaying orbit due to tidal dissipation and the R\o mer effect, while both apsidal precession and an additional perturbing body could reproduce this signal through our comprehensive dynamical simulations. Because both of them are valuable targets which are suitable for transmission spectroscopy, we make some predictions for atmospheric properties of WASP-35b and HAT-P-30b/WASP-51b based on newly derived system parameters., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures,accepted by AJ on 2022 Mar 5

The discovery of a population of close-orbiting giant planets ($\le$ 1 au) has raised a number of questions about their origins and dynamical histories. These issues have still not yet been fully resolved, despite over 20 years of exoplanet detections and a large number of discovered exoplanets. In particular, it is unclear whether warm Jupiters (WJs) form in situ, or whether they migrate from further outside and are even currently migrating to form hot Jupiters (HJs). Here, we report the possible discovery and characterization of the planets in a highly mutually-inclined ($I_{\rm mut}\simeq 45^\circ$), compact two-planet system (KOI-984), in which the newly discovered warm Jupiter KOI-984$c$ is on a 21.5-day, moderately eccentric ($e\simeq 0.4$) orbit, in addition to a previously known 4.3-day planet candidate KOI-984$b$. Meanwhile, the orbital configuration of a moderately inclined ($I_{\rm mut}\simeq 15^\circ$), low-mass ($m_{c}\simeq 24 M_{\oplus}$;$P_b\simeq 8.6$ days) perturbing planet near 1:2 mean motion resonace with KOI-984$b$ could also well reproduce observed transit timing variations and transit duration variations of KOI-984$b$. Such an eccentric WJ with a close-in sibling would pose a challenge to the proposed formation and migration mechanisms of WJs, if the first scenario is supported with more evidences in near future; this system with several other well-measured inclined WJ systems (e.g., Kepler-419 and Kepler-108) may provide additional clues for the origin and dynamical histories of WJs., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on 08/11/2021 by MNRAS

We present an analysis of the starspot evolution, the surface differential rotation (SDR), the correlation between chromospheric activity indicators and the spatial connection between chromospheric and photospheric activities on the active star Kepler-411, using time series photometry over 4 years from Kepler, and spectroscopic data from Keck I 10-m telescope and Lijiang 2.4-m telescope. We constructed the light curve by re-performing photometry and reduction from the Target Pixel Files and Cotrending Basis Vectors with a manually redefined aperture using the software PyKE3. An efficient program, GEMC_LCM, was developed to apply a two-spots model to chosen light curve segments with three spot groups at fixed latitudes (30, 45), (30, 60) and (45, 60). We found a periodic variation of the starspots at period of about 660 days which independs on spot latitudes, and estimated the lower limit of SDR as $P_{\text{eq}} = 9.7810(0.0169)$ days and $\alpha = 0.1016(0.0023)$. Simultaneously, the relative variations of chromospheric activity indicators were derived by subtracting the overall mean spectrum from individual spectrum. It is found that Ca II H and K emissions are strongly correlated with each other, and there also exists a correlation between H$\alpha$ and Ca II H & K emissions, with large dispersion, in accordance with previous results. Furthermore we find the correlation between Ca II H and K emissions is different in 2011 and 2012. The chromospheric emission variation shows a highly spatial anti-correlation with the light curve, suggesting a spatial connection between the chromospheric active region and spot region., Comment: 14 pages, published at MNRAS, 501:1878-1890

We present new Doppler images of both components of the double-lined binary $\sigma^{2}$ CrB, based on the high-resolution spectroscopic data collected during 11 nights in 2015 March--April. The observed spectra form two independent data sets with sufficient phase coverage. We apply the least-squares deconvolution to all observed spectra to obtain high signal-to-noise mean profiles, from which we derive the Doppler images of both components of $\sigma^{2}$ CrB simultaneously. The surfaces of both F9 and G0 components are dominated by pronounced polar spots. The F9 component exhibits a weak spot at latitude 30$^{\circ}$ and its mid-to-low latitudes are relatively featureless. The G0 star shows an extended spot structure at latitude 30$^{\circ}$, and its surface spot coverage is larger than that of the F9 star, which suggests a higher level of magnetic activity. With the cross-correlation method, we derive a solar-like surface differential rotation on the G0 star of $\sigma^{2}$ CrB for the first time, and the surface shear rate is $\Delta \Omega = 0.180 \pm 0.004$ rad d$^{-1}$ and $\alpha = \Delta \Omega / \Omega_{eq} = 0.032 \pm 0.001$. We do not obtain a clear surface shear law for the F9 star due to the lack of mid-to-low latitude features, but detect a systematic longitude shift of high-latitude spots, which indicates a slower rotation with respect to the co-rotating frame., Comment: 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the first Doppler images of the prototypical active binary star RS CVn, derived from high-resolution spectra observed in 2004, 2016 and 2017, using three different telescopes and observing sites. We apply the least-squares deconvolution technique to all observed spectra to obtain high signal-to-noise line profiles, which are used to derive the surface images of the active K-type component. Our images show a complex spot pattern on the K star, distributed widely in longitude. All starspots revealed by our Doppler images are located below a latitude of about 70$^{\circ}$. In accordance with previous light-curve modeling studies, we find no indication of a polar spot on the K star. Using Doppler images derived from two consecutive rotational cycles, we estimate a surface differential rotation rate of $\Delta\Omega = -0.039 \pm 0.003 ~rad~d^{-1}$ and $\alpha = \Delta\Omega/\Omega_{eq} = -0.030 \pm 0.002$ for the K star. Given the limited phase coverage during those two rotations, the uncertainty of our differential rotation estimate is presumably higher., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a detailed characterization of the Kepler-411 system (KOI 1781). This system was previously known to host two transiting planets: one with a period of 3 days ($R=2.4R_\oplus$; Kepler-411b) and one with a period of 7.8 days ($R=4.4R_\oplus$; Kepler-411c), as well as a transiting planetary candidate with a 58-day period ($R=3.3R_\oplus$; KOI 1781.03) from Kepler photometry. Here, we combine Kepler photometry data and new transit timing variation (TTV) measurements from all the Kepler quarters with previous adaptive-optics imaging results, and dynamical simulations, in order to constrain the properties of the Kepler-411 system. From our analysis, we obtain masses of 25.6$\pm$2.6$M_\oplus$ for Kepler-411b and 26.4$\pm$5.9 $M_\oplus$ for Kepler-411c, and we confirm the planetary nature of KOI 1781.03 with a mass of 15.2$\pm$5.1$M_\oplus$, hence the name Kepler-411d. Furthermore, by assuming near-coplanarity of the system (mutual inclination below $30^\circ$), we discover a nontransiting planet, Kepler-411e, with a mass of 10.8$\pm$1.1$M_\oplus$ on a 31.5-day orbit, which has a strong dynamical interaction with Kepler-411d. With densities of $1.71\pm0.39$~g\,cm$^{-3}$ and $2.32\pm0.83$~g\,cm$^{-3}$, both Kepler-411c and Kepler-411d belong to the group of planets with a massive core and a significant fraction of volatiles. We report the discovery of long-period radial velocity (RV) variations in six intermediate-mass K-giant stars using precise RV measurements. These discoveries are part of the Search for Exoplanets around Northern Circumpolar Stars (SENS) survey being conducted at the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory. The nature of the RV variations was investigated by looking for photometric and line shape variations. We can find no variability with the RV period in these quantities and conclude that RV variations are most likely due to unseen sub-stellar companions. Orbital solutions for the six stars yield orbital periods in the range 418-1065 days and minimum masses in the range 1.9-8.5 MJ. These properties are typical on planets around intermediate-mass stars. Our SENS survey so far has about an 8% confirmed planet occurrence rate, and it will provide better statistics on planets around giant stars when the survey is completed., Comment: 14 figures

We present the detection of long-period RV variations in HD 36384, HD 52030, and HD 208742 by using the high-resolution, fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) for the precise radial velocity (RV) survey of about 200 northern circumpolar stars. Analyses of RV data, chromospheric activity indicators, and bisector variations spanning about five years suggest that the RV variations are compatible with planet or brown dwarf companions in Keplerian motion. However, HD 36384 shows photometric variations with a period very close to that of RV variations as well as amplitude variations in the weighted wavelet Z-transform (WWZ) analysis, which argues that the RV variations in HD~36384 are from the stellar pulsations. Assuming that the companion hypothesis is correct, HD~52030 hosts a companion with minimum mass 13.3 M_Jup$ orbiting in 484 days at a distance of 1.2 AU. HD~208742 hosts a companion of 14.0 M_Jup at 1.5 AU with a period of 602 days. All stars are located at the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stage on the H-R diagram after undergone the helium flash and left the giant clump.With stellar radii of 53.0 R_Sun and 57.2 R_Sun for HD 52030 and HD 208742, respectively, these stars may be the largest yet, in terms of stellar radius, found to host sub-stellar companions. We present the first Doppler images of the active eclipsing binary system SZ Psc, based on the high-resolution spectral data sets obtained in 2004 November and 2006 September--December. The least-squares deconvolution technique was applied to derive high signal-to-noise profiles from the observed spectra of SZ Psc. Absorption features contributed by a third component of the system were detected in the LSD profiles at all observed phases. We estimated the mass and period of the third component to be about $0.9 M_{\odot}$ and $1283 \pm 10$ d, respectively. After removing the contribution of the third body from the LSD profiles, we derived the surface maps of SZ Psc. The resulting Doppler images indicate significant starspot activities on the surface of the K subgiant component. The distributions of starspots are more complex than that revealed by previous photometric studies. The cooler K component exhibited pronounced high-latitude spots as well as numerous low- and intermediate-latitude spot groups during the entire observing seasons, but did not show any large, stable polar cap, different from many other active RS CVn-type binaries., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 11 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. We present Doppler images of both components of the eclipsing binary system ER Vul, based on the spectra obtained in 2004 November, 2006 September and 2008 November. The least-squares deconvolution technique is used for enhancing the signal-to-noise ratios of the observed profiles. The new surface images reveal that both stars of ER Vul show strong starspot activities and the starspots appear at various latitudes. The surface maps of 2006 and 2008 both show the presence of large high-latitude starspots on each component of ER Vul. We find no obvious phase shift of the active regions during our observations. The longitude distributions of starspots are non-uniform on both stars. At low-to-mid latitudes, the active regions are almost exclusively found in the hemisphere facing the other star.
