Abstract

Consensus protocols are widely used in building reliable distributed software systems and its correctness is of vital importance. TLA+ is a lightweight formal specification language which enables precise specification of system design and exhaustive checking of the design without any human effort. The features of TLA+ make it widely used in the specification and model checking of consensus protocols, both in academia and industry. However, the application of TLA+ is limited by the state explosion problem in model checking. Though compositional model checking is essential to tame the state explosion problem, existing compositional checking techniques do not sufficiently consider the characteristics of TLA+. In this work, we propose the Interaction-Preserving Abstraction (IPA) framework, which leverages the features of TLA+ and enables practical and efficient compositional model checking of consensus protocols specified in TLA+. In the IPA framework, system specification is partitioned into multiple modules, and each module is divided to the internal part and the interaction part. The basic idea of the interaction-preserving abstraction is to omit the internal part of each module, such that another module cannot distinguish whether it is interacting with the original module or the coarsened abstract one. We use the IPA framework to the compositional checking of the TLA+ specification of two consensus protocols Raft and ParallelRaft. Raft is a consensus protocol which is originally developed in the academia and then widely used in industry. ParallelRaft is the replication protocol in PolarFS, the distributed file system for the commercial database Alibaba PoloarDB. Abstract

Peripheral nerve injuries may result in severe long-gap interruptions that are challenging to repair. Autografting is the gold standard surgical approach for repairing long-gap nerve injuries but can result in prominent donor-site complications. Instead, imitating the native neural microarchitecture using synthetic conduits is expected to offer an alternative strategy for improving nerve regeneration. Here, we designed nerve conduits composed of high-resolution anisotropic microfiber grid-cordes with randomly organized nanofiber sheaths to interrogate the positive effects of these biomimetic structures on peripheral nerve regeneration. Anisotropic microfiber-grids demonstrated the capacity to directionally guide Schwann cells and neurites. Nanofiber sheaths conveyed adequate elasticity and permeability, whilst exhibiting a barrier function against the infiltration of fibroblasts. We then used the composite nerve conduits bridge 30-mm long sciatic nerve defects in canine models. At 12 months post-implant, the morphometric and histological recovery, gait recovery, electrophysiological function, and degree of muscle atrophy were assessed. The newly regenerated nerve tissue that formed within the composite nerve conduits showed restored neurological functions that were superior compared to sheaths-only scaffolds and Neurolac nerve conduit controls. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of using synthetic biophysical cues to effectively bridge long-gap peripheral nerve injuries and indicates the promising clinical application prospects of biomimetic composite nerve conduits.

Abstract

Microfibers from natural products are endowed with remarkable biocompatibility, biodegradability, sustainable utilization as well as environmental protection characteristics etc. Benefitting from these advantages, microfibers have demonstrated their prominent values in biomedical applications. This review comprehensively summarizes the relevant research progress of sustainable microfibers from natural products and their biomedical applications. To begin, common natural elements are introduced for the microfiber fabrication. After that, the focus is on the specific fabrication technology and process. Subsequently, biomedical applications of sustainable microfibers are discussed in detail. Abstract

Virtual reality has gained more attention in the physical training field, but few studies focus on the effects of VR on older adults. Based on existing study we suggest that VR-based upper limb training might be more effective for older adults and used functional near inferred spectrum and movement analysis to evaluate the effects of VR-based training on older adults. 20 older and 20 youth adults were recruited to perform VR training by extending their upper limb to reaching the objects, and non-VR training as a contrast. Both age-related and task-related differences were found in cortical activation, showing that the VR training has aroused more cortical activation. The older groups have more intensive movement but perform worse in terms of task completion. Both groups performed better in VR, and the difference in the older group was higher.
