TOI-561 is a galactic thick disk star hosting an ultra-short period (0.45 day orbit) planet with a radius of 1.37 R$_{\oplus}$, making it one of the most metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -0.41) and oldest ($\sim$10 Gyr) sites where an Earth-sized planet has been found. We present new simultaneous radial velocity measurements (RVs) from Gemini-N/MAROON-X and Keck/HIRES, which we combined with literature RVs to derive a mass of M$_{b}$=2.24 $\pm$ 0.20 M$_{\oplus}$. We also used two new Sectors of TESS photometry to improve the radius determination, finding R$_{b}$=$1.37 \pm 0.04 R_\oplus$, and confirming that TOI-561 b is one of the lowest-density super-Earths measured to date ($\rho_b$= 4.8 $\pm$ 0.5 g/cm$^{3}$). This density is consistent with an iron-poor rocky composition reflective of the host star's iron and rock-building element abundances; however, it is also consistent with a low-density planet with a volatile envelope. The equilibrium temperature of the planet ($\sim$2300 K) suggests that this envelope would likely be composed of high mean molecular weight species, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, or silicate vapor, and is likely not primordial. We also demonstrate that the composition determination is sensitive to the choice of stellar parameters, and that further measurements are needed to determine if TOI-561 b is a bare rocky planet, a rocky planet with an optically thin atmosphere, or a rare example of a non-primordial envelope on a planet with a radius smaller than 1.5 R$_{\oplus}$., Comment: Accepted to AJ on 11/28/2022

TOI-1266c is a recently discovered super-Venus in the radius valley orbiting an early M dwarf. However, its notional bulk density ($\sim$2.2 g cm$^{-3}$) is consistent with a large volatile fraction, suggesting that it might have volatile reservoirs that have survived billions of years at more than twice the Earth's insolation. On the other hand, the upper mass limit paints a picture of a cool super Mercury dominated by >50\% iron core ($\sim$9.2 g cm$^{-3}$) that has tiptoed up to the collisional stripping limit and into the radius gap. Here, we examine several hypothetical states for TOI-1266c using a combination of new and updated open-source atmospheric escape, radiative-convective, and photochemical models. We find that water-rich atmospheres with trace amounts of H$_{2}$ and CO$_{2}$ are potentially detectable (SNR $>\sim 5$) in less than 20 hours of JWST observing time. We also find that water vapor spectral features are not substantially impacted by the presence of high-altitude water or ice clouds due the presence of a significant amount of water above the cloud-deck, although further work with self-consistent cloud models is needed. Regardless of its mass, however, TOI-1266c represents a unique proving ground for several hypotheses related to the evolution of sub-Neptunes and Venus-like worlds, particularly those near the radius valley., 40 pages (18 pages in the main text), 15 figures (10 figures in the main text), 2 appendices. We present the validation of two planets orbiting M dwarfs, TOI-1696b and TOI-2136b. Both planets are mini-Neptunes orbiting nearby stars, making them promising prospects for atmospheric characterization with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We validated the planetary nature of both candidates using high-contrast imaging, ground-based photometry, and near-infrared radial velocities. Adaptive optics images were taken using the ShARCS camera on the 3 m Shane Telescope. Speckle images were taken using the NN-Explore Exoplanet Stellar Speckle Imager on the WIYN 3.5 m telescope. Radii and orbital ephemerides were refined using a combination of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, the diffuser-assisted Astrophysical Research Consortium (ARC) Telescope Imaging Camera (ARCTIC) imager on the 3.5 m ARC telescope at Apache Point Observatory, and the 0.6 m telescope at Red Buttes Observatory. We obtained radial velocities using the Habitable-Zone Planet Finder on the 10 m Hobby–Eberly Telescope, which enabled us to place upper limits on the masses of both transiting planets. TOI-1696b (P = 2.5 days; R p = 3.24 R ⊕; M p < 56.6 M ⊕) falls into a sparsely populated region of parameter space considering its host star’s temperature (T eff = 3168 K, M4.5), as planets of its size are quite rare around mid- to late-M dwarfs. On the other hand, TOI-2136b (P = 7.85 days; R p = 2.09 R ⊕; M p < 15.0 M ⊕) is an excellent candidate for atmospheric follow-up with the JWST.

This study aimed to evaluate the shelf-life of mechanically filleted well-fed Atlantic mackerel during frozen storage at −25 °C and effect of treatment with antioxidants (sodium erythorbate and a polyphosphate mixture) and different antioxidant application methods (dipping, spraying and glazing). Both physicochemical measurements and sensory analysis were applied. Antioxidant treatments prolonged shelf-life of mackerel. Sensory analysis indicated that untreated fillets had a shelf-life of less than 2.5 months, while all antioxidant treated fillets exceeded that. The most effective treatment, dipping fillets into a sodium erythorbate solution, yielding a shelf-life of 15 months. Physicochemical methods used to evaluate degradation of lipids in the fillets were free fatty acids (FFA), lipid hydroperoxides (PV) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). They did not correlate with sensory results and might therefore be a questionable choice for evaluation of oxidation and development of rancid flavour and odour in complex matrixes such as Atlantic mackerel.

Publisher's version (útgefin grein), This study investigated the efficacy of three commercially relevant packaging methods (vacuum with water glazing VAC-G; vacuum with seawater VAC-S; shatter-layer packaging SL) to improve frozen storage stability of mechanically filleted Atlantic mackerel at − 25 °C, in comparison to water glazing alone (GL) and storage as whole unglazed, block frozen fish. Besides proximate composition and pH of raw material, quality changes were analysed by free fatty acid content (FFA), water holding capacity (WHC), cooking yield, lipid oxidation (lipid hydroperoxides, PV; non-protein bound thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, TBARS) and sensory profiles of cooked samples after 3.5, 8, 10 and 12 months of frozen storage. Vacuum-packaging was effective in mitigating the PV and TBARS as well as rancid odour and flavour. The inclusion of seawater in VAC-S altered the sensory textural attributes of the mackerel fillet to be more juicy, tender and soft and increased the attribute of salty flavour in the sample. SL delayed rancid odour and flavour by 2 months compared to GL. Processing of mackerel under industrial conditions, including filleting, handling, double-freezing and glazing accelerated the formation of FFA as well as losses of WHC and cooking yield in the fillet regardless the packaging methods., Open Access funding provided by Nofima the food research institute. Data from ripening experiments of herring carried out at three Nordic fishery research institutions in the period 1992–1995 were collected and analyzed by multivariate analysis. The experiments were carried out at different times, with different stocks as raw material, using different types of treatments and analyzed in different laboratories. The question considered here is whether these data can be assumed to be one homogeneous set of data pertaining to ripening of salted herring or whether data from different labs, stocks, etc. must be considered independently. This is of importance for further research into ripening processes with these and similar data. It is shown in this paper that all data can be considered as one homogeneous data set. This is verified using resampling where latent structures are compared between different sample sets. This is done indirectly by testing regression models, that have been developed on one sample set, on other sample sets. It is also done directly by monitoring the deviation in latent structure observed between different sample sets. No formal statistical test is developed for whether samples can be assumed to stem from the same population. Although this can easily be envisioned, it was exactly the need for a more intuitive and visual test that prompted this work, developing different exploration tools that visually make it clear how well the data can be assumed to derive from the same population. Subsequently analyzing the data as one homogeneous group provides new information about factors that govern the ripening of salted herring and can be used in new strategic research as well as in industrial practice.
