Abstract The root system plays a crucial role in water and nutrient absorption, making it a significant factor affected by nitrogen (N) availability in the soil. However, the intricate dynamics and distribution patterns of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) root density and N nutrient under varying N supplies in Southern Xinjiang, China, have not been thoroughly understood. A two-year experiment (2021 and 2022) was conducted to determine the effects of five N rates (0, 150, 225, 300, and 450 kg N ha−1) on the root system, shoot growth, N uptake and distribution, and cotton yield. Compared to the N0 treatment (0 kg N ha−1), the application of N fertilizer at a rate of 300 kg N ha−1 resulted in consistent and higher seed cotton yields of 5875 kg ha−1 and 6815 kg ha−1 in 2021 and 2022, respectively. This N fertilization also led to a significant improvement in dry matter weight and N uptake by 32.4% and 53.7%, respectively. Furthermore, applying N fertilizer at a rate of 225 kg N ha−1 significantly increased root length density (RLD), root surface density (RSD), and root volume density (RVD) by 49.6–113.3%, 29.1–95.1%, and 42.2–64.4%, respectively, compared to the treatment without N fertilization (0 kg N ha−1). Notably, the roots in the 0–20 cm soil layers exhibited a stronger response to N fertilization compared to the roots distributed in the 20–40 cm soil layers. The root morphology parameters (RLD, RSD, and RVD) at specific soil depths (0–10 cm in the seedling stage, 10–25 cm in the bud stage, and 20–40 cm in the peak boll stage) were significantly associated with N uptake and seed cotton yield. Optimizing nitrogen fertilizer supply within the range of 225–300 kg N ha−1 can enhance root foraging, thereby promoting the interaction between roots and shoots and ultimately improving cotton production in arid areas.

Abstract Background Fungi and bacteria coexist in a wide variety of environments, and their interactions are now recognized as the norm in most agroecosystems. These microbial communities harbor keystone taxa, which facilitate connectivity between fungal and bacterial communities, influencing their composition and functions. The roots of most plants are associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, which develop dense networks of hyphae in the soil. The surface of these hyphae (called the hyphosphere) is the region where multiple interactions with microbial communities can occur, e.g., exchanging or responding to each other’s metabolites. However, the presence and importance of keystone taxa in the AM fungal hyphosphere remain largely unknown. Results Here, we used in vitro and pot cultivation systems of AM fungi to investigate whether certain keystone bacteria were able to shape the microbial communities growing in the hyphosphere and potentially improved the fitness of the AM fungal host. Based on various AM fungi, soil leachates, and synthetic microbial communities, we found that under organic phosphorus (P) conditions, AM fungi could selectively recruit bacteria that enhanced their P nutrition and competed with less P-mobilizing bacteria. Specifically, we observed a privileged interaction between the isolate Streptomyces sp. D1 and AM fungi of the genus Rhizophagus, where (1) the carbon compounds exuded by the fungus were acquired by the bacterium which could mineralize organic P and (2) the in vitro culturable bacterial community residing on the surface of hyphae was in part regulated by Streptomyces sp. D1, primarily by inhibiting the bacteria with weak P-mineralizing ability, thereby enhancing AM fungi to acquire P. Conclusions This work highlights the multi-functionality of the keystone bacteria Streptomyces sp. D1 in fungal-bacteria and bacterial-bacterial interactions at the hyphal surface of AM fungi. Water evaporation is a ubiquitous natural process exploiting thermal energy from ambient environment. Hydrovoltaic technologies emerged in recent years offer one prospective route to generate electricity from water evaporation, which has long been overlooked. Herein, we developed a hybrid hydrovoltaic generator driven by natural water evaporation, integrating an “evaporation motor” with an evaporation-electricity device and a droplet-electricity device. A rotary motion of the “evaporation motor” relies on phase change of ethanol driven by water-evaporation induced temperature gradient. This motion enables the evaporation-electricity device to work under a beneficial water-film operation mode to produce output of ~4 V and ~0.2 µA, as well as propels the droplet-electricity device to convert mechanical energy into pulsed output of ~100 V and ~0.2 mA. As different types of hydrovoltaic devices require distinctive stimuli, it was challenging to make them work simultaneously, especially under one single driving force. We here for the first time empower two types of hydrovoltaic devices solely by omnipresent water evaporation. Therefore, this work presents a new pathway to exploiting water evaporation-associated ambient thermal energy and provides insights on developing hybrid hydrovoltaic generators.

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is an important fiber cash crop, but its root traits related to phosphorus (P) acquisition, including mycorrhizal root traits, are poorly understood. Eight cotton varieties bred in northwestern China that were released between 1950 and 2013 were grown in pots with or without one arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) species (Funneliformis mosseae) at three P supply levels (0, 50 and 300 mg P as KH2PO4 kg−1). Eleven root traits were measured and calculated after 7 wk of growth. The more recent accessions had smaller root diameters, acquired less P and produced less biomass, indicating an (inadvertent) varietal selection for thinner roots that provided less cortical space for AMF, which then increased the need for a high P fertilizer level. At the two lower P levels, the mycorrhizal plants acquired more P and produced more biomass than non-mycorrhizal plants (3.2 vs. 0.9 mg P per plant; 1.8 vs. 0.9 g biomass per plant at P0; 14.5 vs. 1.7 mg P per plant; and 4.7 vs. 1.6 g biomass per plant at P50). At the highest P level, the mycorrhizal plants acquired more P than non-mycorrhizal plants (18.8 vs. 13.4 mg per P plant), but there was no difference in biomass (6.2 vs. 6.3 g per plant). At the intermediate P level, root diameter was significantly positively correlated with shoot biomass, P concentration and the P content of mycorrhizal plants. The results of our study support the importance of the outsourcing model of P acquisition in the root economics space framework. Inadvertent varietal selection in the last decades, resulting in thinner roots and a lower benefit from AMF, has led to a lower productivity of cotton varieties at moderate P supply (i.e., when mycorrhizal, the average biomass of older varieties 5.0 g per plant vs. biomass of newer varieties 4.4 g per plant), indicating the need to rethink cotton breeding efforts in order to achieve high yields without very high P input. One feasible way to solve the problem of inadvertent varietal selection for cotton is to be aware of the trade-offs between the root do-it-yourself strategy and the outsourcing towards AMF strategy, and to consider both morphological and mycorrhizal root traits when breeding cotton varieties.

The mine power grid operating environment is poor. When a short circuit fault occurs in the underground power supply system, the use of complex anti-skip trip protection device will reduce the reliability of the entire power grid and increase the cost. The mine power grid needs to ensure that the current quick-break protection can act instantaneously to remove the short circuit fault, especially at the line outlet. The current mine power grid protection scheme of the anti-skip trip can not take into account the protection quick-action, power supply reliability and equipment economy. In order to solve the above problems, according to the minimum principle that short-circuit accident in the mine power grid can not skip to the ground, a setting strategy of instantaneous current quick-breaking protection for mine power grid based on the overall optimal principle is proposed. The relationship between the short-circuit current value and the location of short-circuit point and the distribution characteristics of short-circuit current at the beginning and end of the line are analyzed. The shortcomings of the traditional single-setting method are compared and studied. Three indexes are defined, which are minimum-maximum system impedance ratio, maximum system impedance and line impedance ratio, and adjacent line impedance ratio. The indexes are used to represent characteristic relational expressions of different short-circuit current distribution scenarios and conditions for each setting method to meet the requirements. The setting methods applicable to instantaneous current quick-breaking protection under different short-circuit current distribution scenarios are determined. The corresponding optimal setting strategy flow is proposed. Taking a typical mine power supply line as an example, according to the proposed setting strategy, the setting calculation of the protection switch at all levels is carried out. The results show that the setting strategy is used to set five protection switches with the risk of the skip trip in the mine power grid model. The protection range of four protection switches can be controlled within the two-level line. The times of skip trip accidents are reduced. The probability of underground short-circuit faults extending to the surface of the mine power grid is reduced.

Influenza is a significant public health challenge because of the emergence of antigenically shifted or highly virulent strains. The neuraminidase inhibitor oseltamivir is used as an antiviral drug in clinical treatment. However, its therapeutic effects can be greatly compromised by the emergence of drug-resistant mutant viruses. Thus, there is an urgent need to distinguish drug-resistant strains with a simple method. To address this, in the present study, we develop a rapid, sensitive and convenient molecular diagnosis method based on CRISPR/Cas12a technology and lateral flow detection (LFD). By targeting mutant sequences amplified by recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) reaction, crRNA is designed to develop the CRISPR/Cas12a assay, and 2000 copies can be directly observed by the naked eye under blue light-emitting diode (LED) light. Combined with LFD, the limit of detection of RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a-LFD is about 20 copies of target sequence per reaction. Collectively, RPA-CRISPR/Cas12a-LFD method provides a novel alternative for the sensitive, specific and portable detection to diagnose oseltamivir-resistant mutant strains.

Abstract The availability of phosphorus (P) fertilizer applied to soil can diminish rapidly because of the complex soil P immobilization processes. However, the quantitative distribution of fertilizer P in the soil P fractions is not fully understood. Here, two experiments were conducted in a greenhouse using 32P‐labelled KH2PO4 to (i) quantify the distribution of P fertilizer in soil fractions, microorganisms and maize shoots grown in contrasting soils; (ii) characterize the effect of planting maize on soil P fractions and (iii) determine the amount of plant P derived from fertilizer vs. soil. Depending on the soil type, 74.1%–84.1% of the labelled P was retained in the soil, 11.4%–14.5% was found in maize shoots and 0.7%–4.5% was present in microorganisms. Distribution of applied P in the soil P fractions was dependent on soil type, with most P present as NaOH‐Pi and residual‐P in the Red soil, and as HCl‐P in the Fluvo‐aquic soil. Root‐mediated processes were involved in mobilisation of residual‐P in all three soils, with significant depletion of NaOH‐Pi in the Red soil, NaOH‐Pi and HCl‐P in the Black soil, and HCl‐P in the Fluvo‐aquic soil. The plant P derived from fertilizer and soil increased with increasing P addition rates in all three soils. In the soils with low‐P availability, fertilizer contributed more P to plants than soil, whereas in the initially high‐P soil, the opposite occurred. In conclusion, the partitioning of fertilizer P to various soil P fractions is dependent on the soil type, and the contribution of P derived from fertilizer to maize P uptake was related inversely to the soil legacy P.

Understanding soil phosphorus (P) distribution and its key drivers is fundamental for sustainable P management. In this study, a 21-year fertilization experiment on black soil was carried out, setting up five fertilization treatments: unfertilized control (CK), nitrogen and potassium (NK), nitrogen, P and potassium (NPK), NPK plus straw (NPKS), and NPK plus manure (NPKM). The distribution and effecting factors of P pools within soil aggregates were investigated. Compared to CK, the NK and NPK treatments decreased calcium-associated P concentration in all aggregate fractions. Meanwhile, the NPK treatment significantly increased the organic P extracted from NaOH in unaggregated particles (3, and NaOH increased as aggregate size increased. This was mainly because straw or manure addition promoted soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in aggregates, creating more sorption sites via association with amorphous metallic minerals, and, thus, facilitating P accumulation. In conclusion, decreasing soil pH by chemical fertilizers is an effective strategy for mobilizing soil P, whereas increasing SOC by straw or manure facilitates P accumulation.

The species richness and propagule number of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are high in intensively-managed agricultural soils. Past research has shown that AMF improve crop phosphorus (P) uptake under low soil P conditions, however it is unclear if AMF play a role in high Olsen-P soils. In this study, we investigated whether native fungal benefits exist under high P input field conditions in-situ and contribute to P utilization. We installed in-grow tubes which were sealed with different membrane pore sizes (30 or 0.45 µm) to allow or prevent AMF hyphae access to the hyphal compartment and prevent cotton roots from penetrating the chamber. We used the depletion of soil available P (Olsen-P) in the hyphae accessed compartment to indicate P uptake by the native AMF community. Our results showed that the native AMF mediated P depletion and microbial biomass P (MBP) turnover and caused the largest Olsen-P depletion ratio and MBP turnover ratio in the high P treatments (Olsen-P: 78.29 mg kg–1). The cotton roots in each fertilization regime were colonized by a unique AMF community and Glomus and Paraglomus were the dominant genera, implying the long-term fertilization regimes domesticated the AMF community. We conclude that native AMF caused the P depletion and P turnover even under high soil Olsen-P conditions.

For improving the corrosion resistance of carbon steel in the saline medium with high temperature and CO2-containing environment, tetrabutyl titanate was used to crosslink with urushiol under the compatibilization condition of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate to form a urushiol titanium coating, which was coated on carbon steel substrate surface for preparing high temperature resistant coating. Subsequently, thermogravimetry (TG) was employed to determine the thermal-resistant of urushiol titanium coating. The morphological and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were conducted to evaluate the protective capacity of the coating on carbon steel in simulated saline water by immersion test under high temperature, high pressure and CO2-containing medium. Moreover, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was utilized to evaluate the impedance change of coating in corrosive medium before and after immersion. Results showed that the thermal decomposition temperature of urushiol titanium coating achieved at 275.19 ℃. After immersed in simulated saline solution at 140 ℃ and 155 ℃ with CO2 pressure of 2 MPa for 30 d, the low-frequency impedance values of the coating could reach the respective magnitude of 1011 Ω·cm2 and 1010 Ω·cm2. Moreover, the valence bond characteristics of the coating did not change, and the surface morphology of coating was uniform and closely combined with the substrate, which indicated that the coating showed excellent protective performance against high temperature.

Phosphorus (P) constraint can be alleviated by increasing C inputs, which can help to improve crop production and P fertilizer use efficiency. However, the effects of different manures on soil microbial biomass P (MBP) and P fractions as well as C fractions in calcareous soils remain poorly understood. Soil MBP pool involves the P mineralization and immobilization processes, potentially changing P fractions and P availability. Therefore, the effects of different manures on soil microbial biomass (MBP, MBC) pool, P, and C fractions and crop P utilization were evaluated in greenhouse experiments with maize plantation. Treatments included no manure (control), poultry manure (PM), cow manure (CM), goat manure (GM), mixed manure (MM), and three inorganic P (Pi) rates; P0: 0 mg kg-1, P50: 50 mg kg-1, and P100: P100 mg kg-1 (P2O5). For plant growth comparison, crop physiological growth indices, shoot P contents and total P uptake were increased by PM and P100 as compared to other treatments. The PM with P100 significantly increased the plant growth by inducing P uptake of ∼18% compared with control. The results exhibited that Pi (P100) combined with manure (PM) significantly (p < 0.05) increased the soil physicochemical properties, that is, 683.76 mg kg-1 total P, 21.5 mg kg-1 Olsen P, 4.26 g kg-1 SOC, 2.41 g kg-1 POC, as well as microbial biomass C and P increased by 152.84 mg kg-1 and 36.83 mg kg-1, respectively. Consequently, we concluded that PM with Pi (P100) application builds up soil microbial biomass, which is more beneficial for promoting P utilization for maize.

Phosphorus (P) fertilizer is generally applied to enhance the soil P pool and meet crop demand, but most of the added P is absorbed by soil. This study aimed to explore the importance of P fractions and adsorption–desorption characteristics on the demand for P fertilizer to determine the optimum P fertilizer amount for a cotton field under mulched drip irrigation in Xinjiang, China. A 4-year experiment (2016–2019) was conducted in a cotton field to evaluate the effects of five P fertilizer addition levels (0, 75, 150, 300, and 450 kg P2O5 ha−1 year−1) on inorganic P fractions and P adsorption–desorption properties at different soil depths and explore the effects of soil properties on P adsorption. The 4-year continuous P fertilization enhanced the inorganic P content and altered the proportions of various P forms. A large proportion of P accumulated in soil was transformed into Ca8-P, followed by Ca2-P, mainly in the surface layer. The accumulation and transformation of P in fertilized soil reduced P adsorption and enhanced P desorption. Soils with higher P application levels had higher inorganic P accumulation with lower adsorption and higher desorption. The total P and Olsen-P in a 0- to 5-cm soil layer; Ca8-P and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in a 5- to 10-cm soil layer; Olsen-P, Ca10-P, clay, and cation exchange capacity in a 10- to 20-cm soil layer; and Olsen-P in a 20- to 40-cm soil layer significantly affected the P adsorption–desorption (p < 0.05). The application rate of 75–150 kg P2O5 ha−1 year−1 produced lower inorganic P accumulation, favorable adsorption–desorption properties, and high cotton yield, and thus could be considered the optimal P fertilizer application level.

Abstract Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbioses are an attractive means of improving the efficiency of soil phosphorus (P) that difficult to be used by plants and may provide a sustainable way of maintaining high yields while reducing P applications. However, quantifying the contribution of indigenous AM fungi on phosphorus uptake and yields of maize (Zea mays L.) under field conditions is not particularly clear. Mesh-barrier compartments were applied to monitor the distribution of hyphal P uptake throughout the experimental period under different planting densities and soil depths, over two consecutive years. AM symbioses enhanced plant P-acquisition efficiency, especially during the silking stage, and hyphae of AM fungi was assessed to contribution 19.4% at most to total available P content of soil. Moreover, the pattern of AM depletion of soil P generally matched shoot nutrient demand under the high planting density, which resulted in significantly increased yield in 2014. Although the hyphal length density was significantly decreased with soil depth, AM fungi still had high potential for P supply in deeper soil. It demonstrates the great potential of indigenous AM fungi to maize productivity in the high-yield area of China, and it would further provide the possibility of elimination P fertilizer applications to maintain high yields.

Lung cancer is a lethal malignancy. Plenty of circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been identified to be the vital regulators in lung cancer development. Here, we intended to clarify the functional role of circRNA HIPK3 (circHIPK3, also called hsa_circ_0021593) and its underlying mechanism of action. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was employed to evaluate the levels of circHIPK3 and miR-381-3p. Cell viability and apoptosis rate were monitored by Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and flow cytometry, respectively. Cell migration was estimated through the Transwell assay. To assess glycolysis, commercial kits were utilized to measure the levels of glucose and lactate and the enzyme activity of hexokinase-2 (HK2). Expression of related proteins was detected via western blot analysis. The target connection between circHIPK3 and miR-381-3p was validated by dual-luciferase reporter, RIP, and pull-down assays. The role of circHIPK3 in vivo was determined via the xenograft assay. CircHIPK3 was upregulated, while miR-381-3p was downregulated in lung cancer tissues and cells. And circHIPK3 deficiency inhibited lung cancer progression by lowering cell proliferation, migration, glycolysis, and promoting apoptosis of lung cancer cells in vitro. MiR-381-3p was a target of circHIPK3, and miR-381-3p interference alleviated circHIPK3 knockdown-induced lung cancer progression inhibition. CircHIPK3 could activate the protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin (AKT/mTOR) signaling pathway. Moreover, circHIPK3 knockdown suppressed tumor growth in vivo by inactivating the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. In conclusion, the silencing of circHIPK3 inhibited lung cancer progression, at least in part, by sponging miR-381-3p and inactivating the AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.

Retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptors (RORs) are frequently abnormally expressed in several human malignancies, including gastric cancer (GC). RORs are involved in the development and progression of GC through Wnt signaling pathway receptors and other common receptors. However, the prognostic roles of individual RORs in patients with GC remain elusive. We accessed the prognostic roles of three RORs (RORα, RORβ, and RORγ) through “The Kaplan–Meier plotter” (KM plotter) database in patients with GC. For all patients with GC who were followed for 20 years, the low mRNA expression of all three RORs showed a significant correlation with better outcomes. We further accessed the prognostic value of individual RORs in different clinical pathological features including Lauren classification, clinical stages, pathological grades, HER2 status, and different treatments methods. The RORs demonstrated critical prognostic roles in GC. Expressions of RORs were higher in GC tissues when compared with normal gastric tissues. Moreover, knockdown of RORs significantly inhibited cell proliferation and migration, suggesting an oncogenic role of RORs in human GC. These findings suggest potential roles of RORs as biomarkers for GC prognosis and as oncogenes in GC.

Abstract Global climate change is one of the most pressing conservation challenges; in particular, changes in precipitation regimes have already substantially influenced terrestrial ecosystems. However, the mechanisms influencing precipitation changes on individual plants and the plant communities in desert grasslands have yet to be fully elucidated. We therefore examine the influence of increased precipitation on plant community compositions in the Gurbantunggut Desert, Xinjiang, northwestern China, from 2005 to 2009. We found that growth of all plant species and the community productivities increased markedly with enhanced water input. Cover of ephemeral synusia also significantly increased due to increased precipitation, implying that the role of the ephemeral community for stabilization of sand dunes was strengthened by increased precipitation. The response of plant community compositions to increased precipitation was primarily reflected as changes in plant density, while increased precipitation did not affect plant species richness and the diversity index. Dominant species drove the response of plant density to increasing precipitation during the five‐year study period. However, the relative responses of rare species were stronger than those of the dominant species, thereby potentially driving species turnover with long‐term increased precipitation. This finding improved our understanding of how increased precipitation drives the changes in plant community composition in desert grasslands and will help to better predict changes in the community composition of ephemerals under future global climate change scenarios.

Maximizing the function of indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi by choosing specific crop genotypes offers one of the few untapped opportunities to improve the sustainability of agriculture. In this study, the differences in mycorrhizal responsiveness (MR) in plant growth and shoot phosphorus (P) content among cotton (Gossypium spp. L.) genotypes from different release dates were compared and then the relationships between MR and P uptake-related traits were determined. The experimental design in a greenhouse included 24 genotypes released from 1950 to present in Xinjiang Province, inoculation with or without AM fungi, and P levels (15 and 150 mg P kg–1 added as KH2PO4). Results showed that the modern cotton genotypes exhibited a higher degree of mycorrhizal colonization, the hyphal length density (HLD), and mycorrhizae-induced changes in shoot growth than the old genotypes when inoculated with indigenous AM fungi at both the P levels. Moreover, MR was highly correlated with the HLD at low P levels and the HLD may provide useful insights for future cotton breeding aimed at delivering crop genotypes that can benefit more from AM fungi.

A four-year project, entitled “The mechanisms of fraction transformation and high use efficiency of P fertilizer in Chinese cropping systems” commenced in 2017. The project was established to answer three key questions and looked at 17 cropping systems on ten soils. First, we asked what are the dynamics of transformation, fixation and mobilization of P fertilizers in soil-cropping systems? Second, what are the mechanisms of soil-crop-microbe interactions by which P fertilizer can be efficiently used? Third, how to manipulate the processes of P use in cropping systems? The targets of this project are (1) to explore the mechanisms of P fixation, the pathways of loss of P availability and the threshold of migration of fertilizer P in the field; (2) to uncover mechanisms by which soil legacy P is mobilized through root physiological and morphological processes and through arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and P-solubilizing bacteria in rhizosphere and hyphosphere; (3) to estimate the biological potential of crops for high efficiency P absorption and use; (4) to innovate new approaches for improving the efficiency of P fertilizers. The outcomes will provide theoretical support for setting standards for limitation of P fertilizer application rate in the main cropping zones of China.

ABSTRACT Plant roots are usually colonized by various arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal species, which vary in morphological, physiological, and genetic traits. This colonization constitutes the mycorrhizal nutrient uptake pathway (MP) and supplements the pathway through roots. Simultaneously, the extraradical hyphae of each AM fungus is associated with a community of bacteria. However, whether the community structure and function of the microbiome on the extraradical hyphae differ between AM fungal species remains unknown. In order to understand the community structure and the predicted functions of the microbiome associated with different AM fungal species, a split-root compartmented rhizobox cultivation system, which allowed us to inoculate two AM fungal species separately in two root compartments, was used. We inoculated two separate AM fungal species combinations, (i) Funneliformis mosseae and Gigaspora margarita and (ii) Rhizophagus intraradices and G. margarita, on a single root system of cotton. The hyphal exudate-fed, active microbiome was measured by combining 13C-DNA stable isotope probing with MiSeq sequencing. We found that different AM fungal species, which were simultaneously colonizing a single root system, hosted active microbiomes that were distinct from one another. Moreover, the predicted potential functions of the different microbiomes were distinct. We conclude that the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal component of the system is responsible for the recruitment of distinct microbiomes in the hyphosphere. The potential significance of the predicted functions of the microbial ecosystem services is discussed. IMPORTANCE Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form tight symbiotic relationships with the majority of terrestrial plants and play critical roles in plant P acquisition, adding a further dimension of complexity. The plant-AM fungus-bacterium system is considered a continuum, with the bacteria colonizing not only the plant roots, but also the associated mycorrhizal hyphal network, known as the hyphosphere microbiome. Plant roots are usually colonized by different AM fungal species which form an independent phosphorus uptake pathway from the root pathway, i.e., the mycorrhizal pathway. The community structure and function of the hyphosphere microbiome of different AM species are completely unknown. In this novel study, we found that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi cocolonizing on single plant roots recruit their own specific microbiomes, which should be considered in evaluating plant microbiome form and function. Our findings demonstrate the importance of understanding trophic interactions in order to gain insight into the plant-AM fungus-bacterium symbiosis.

This study designs one kind of hydraulic auto-brake-valve calculates its driving force and velocity, simulates its braking force and stability, in order to accomplish auto brake in the landing condition and keep braking in cruising condition of the unmanned aerial vehicle. The auto-brake-valve uses a servo motor to drive lead screw and nut. The output press of the auto-brake-valve is changed by the variation of rotate speed and direction of servo motor, that can be completed the control of the brake device.

Abstract Background There are two plant phosphorus (P)-uptake pathways, namely the direct P uptake by roots and the indirect P uptake through arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Maximizing the efficiency of root and AMF processes associated with P acquisition by adjusting soil conditions is important for simultaneously ensuring high yields and the efficient use of available P. Results A root box experiment was conducted in 2015 and 2016. The aim was to investigate the effects of different P and soil water conditions on root/mycorrhizal growth and P uptake by cotton plants. Hyphal growth was induced in well-watered soil, but decreased with increasing P concentrations. Additionally, P fertilizers regulated root length only under well-watered conditions, with the longest roots observed in response to 0.2 g P2O5 kg− 1. In contrast, root elongation was essentially unaffected by P fertilizers under drought conditions. And soil water in general had more significant effects on root and hyphal growth than phosphorus levels. In well-watered soil, the application of P significantly increased the cotton plant P uptake, but there were no differences between the effects of 0.2 and 1 g P2O5 kg− 1. So optimizing phosphorus inputs and soil water can increase cotton growth and phosphorus uptake by maximizing the efficiency of phosphorus acquisition by roots/mycorrhizae. Conclusions Soil water and P contents of 19–24% and 20–25 mg kg− 1, respectively, simultaneously maximized root/mycorrhizal growth and P uptake by cotton plants.

Elemental stoichiometry reflects the interaction between plants, soil, and microorganisms, and links biogeochemical patterns with physiological limitations. The stoichiometry of elements in farmland soil is an important part of the function of the agroecosystem. Soil nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are the main macronutrients in terrestrial ecosystems, which are closely related to biogeochemical cycles. Studying the temporal and spatial variability of soil nutrients in tropical farmland is of great significance for exploring the variation of soil nutrients and promoting the sustainable development of tropical agriculture. In this study, soil samples in the farmland of Hainan Island were collected at three different stages for exploring temporal and spatial variations of N, P, and K stoichiometry. Results showed that soil concentrations of available N, P, and K changed markedly with the temporal and spatial variability. The highest available N, P, and K concentrations appeared at the stage of 2016–2020 with values of 110.40 mg/kg, 51.91 mg/kg, and 82.76 mg/kg, respectively, while their lowest values were observed in 2010–2015 with 66.34 mg/kg, 11.27 mg/kg, and 45.77 mg/kg, respectively. The available nitrogen content in the three time periods first increased and then decreased with the increase of available potassium content, an opposite trend was observed between available nitrogen and phosphorus. The content of N increased in Haikou, Lingao, Ding’an, and P increased in Wengchang, and Lingshui and K increased in Danzhou and Wanning as time increased.

Chinese aesthetics is distinctive and very different from the western one. While the latter tries to grasp the inner beauty of things by breaking them and accounts for beauty as an object, chinese aesthetics considers beauty as a subject, rather aiming at feeling the beauty of things for what they are. Compared to the occidental tradition, which is rooted in sensation but deviates from sensation to pursue a rational goal, chinese aesthetics originates from the sensation and adheres to it all the time. Therefore, the chinese stance makes for a unique and genuine approach to the discipline.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a crucial role in enhancing the acquisition of immobile nutrients, particularly phosphorus. However, because nitrogen (N) is more mobile in the soil solution and easier to access by plants roots, the role of AMF in enhancing N acquisition is regarded as less important for host plants. Because AMF have a substantial N demand, competition for N between AMF and plants particularly under low N condition is possible. Thus, it is necessary to know whether or not AMF affect N uptake of plants and thereby affect plant growth under field conditions. We conducted a 2-year field trial and pot experiments in a greenhouse by using benomyl to suppress colonization of maize roots by indigenous AMF at both low and high N application rates. Benomyl reduced mycorrhizal colonization of maize plants in all experiments. Benomyl-treated maize had a higher shoot N concentration and content and produced more grain under field conditions. Greenhouse pot experiments showed that benomyl also enhanced maize growth and N concentration and N content when the soil was not sterilized, but had no effect on maize biomass and N content when the soil was sterilized but a microbial wash added, providing evidence that increased plant performance is at least partly caused by direct effects of benomyl on AMF. We conclude that AMF can reduce N acquisition and thereby reduce grain yield of maize in N-limiting soils.

Phytate is the most abundant form of soil organic phosphorus (P). Increased P nutrition of arbuscular mycorrhizal plants derived from phytate has been repeatedly reported. Earlier studies assessed acid phosphatase rather than phytase as an indication of mycorrhizal fungi-mediated phytate use. We investigated the effect of mycorrhizal hyphae-mediated phytase activity on P uptake by maize. Two maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars, non-inoculated or inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi Funneliformis mosseae or Claroideoglomus etunicatum, were grown for 45 days in two-compartment rhizoboxes, containing a root compartment and a hyphal compartment. The soil in the hyphal compartment was supplemented with 20, 100, and 200 mg P kg-1 soil as calcium phytate. We measured activity of phytase and acid phosphatase in the hyphal compartment, hyphal length density, P uptake, and plant biomass. Our results showed: (1) phytate addition increased phytase and acid phosphatase activity, and resulted in larger P uptake and plant biomass; (2) increases in P uptake and biomass were correlated with phytase activity but not with acid phosphatase activity; (3) lower phytate addition rate increased, but higher addition rate decreased hyphal length density. We conclude that P from phytate can be taken up by arbuscular mycorrhizal plants and that phytase plays a more important role in mineralizing phytate than acid phosphatase.
