1. The rationale for the recovery of the territories contaminated by organomineral waste

Abstract

The article presents the results of surveys conducted on three areas contaminated with organomineral and petroleum-containing waste. The selected research sites included a location affected by a fuel oil spill, a geoenvironment contaminated with petroleum products, and a territory of unauthorized disposal of distillery waste. Comprehensive engineering surveys were carried out on all sites, with some of them including engineering-geophysical surveys. The areas of the contaminated territories and the volume of waste were determined. Additionally, data evaluation was performed using the TPT-cloud software suite, which allowed for optimizing the scope of the conducted studies and accurately interpreting the research results to enhance the quality of the restoration works. The study justifies the methods for conducting restoration measures based on the proposed methodology for assessing the feasibility of using biological methods in land reclamation and waste disposal.

Abstract

In this research paper we modify a classical SIR model to better adapt to the dynamics of COVID-19, that is we propose the heterogeneous SQAIRD model where COVID-19 spreads over a population of economic agents, namely: the elderly, adults and young people. We then compute and simulate an optimal control problem faced by a Government, where its objective is to minimize the costs generated by the pandemics using as control a compulsory quarantine measure (that is, a lockdown). We first analyze the problem from a theoretical perspective, claiming that different lockdown policies (total lockdown, no lockdown or partial lockdown) may justified by different cost (concave or convex) structures of the economies. We then focus on a particular cost structure (convex costs) and we simulate a targeted optimal policy vs. a uniform optimal policy, by dividing the whole population in three demographic groups (young, adults and old). We also simulate the dynamic of the pandemic with no policy implemented. Simulations highlighted the fact that: a) a policy of lockdown is always better than the \emph{laissez faire} policy, because it limits the costs that the pandemic generates in an uncontrolled situation; b) a targeted policy based on age of the individuals outperforms a uniform policy in terms of costs that it generates, being a targeted policy less costly and equally effective in the control of the pandemic.

6. Optimal Control of Joint Multi-Virus Infection and Information Spreading

Abstract

Nowadays, epidemic models provide an appropriate tool for describing the propagation of biological viruses in human or animal populations, or rumours and other kinds of information in social networks and malware in both computer and ad hoc networks. Commonly, there are exist multiple types of malware infecting a network of computing devices, or different messages can spread over the social network. Information spreading and virus propagation are interdependent processes. To capture such independencies, we integrate two epidemic models into one holistic framework, known as the modified Susceptible-Warned-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible (SWIRS) model. The first epidemic model describes the information spreading regarding the risk of malware attacks and possible preventive procedures. The second one describes the propagation of multiple viruses over the network of devices. To minimize the impact of the virus spreading and improve the protection of the networks, we consider an optimal control problem with two types of control strategies: information spreading among healthy nodes and the treatment of infected nodes. We obtain the structure of optimal control strategies and study the condition of epidemic outbreaks. The main results are extended to the case of the network of two connected clusters. Numerical examples are used to corroborate the theoretical findings.

Abstract

Recent wide spreading of Ransomware has created new challenges for cybersecurity over large-scale networks. The densely connected networks can exacerbate the spreading and makes the containment and control of the malware more challenging. In this work, we propose an impulse optimal control framework for epidemics over networks. The hybrid nature of discrete-time control policy of continuous-time epidemic dynamics together with the network structure poses a challenging optimal control problem. We leverage the Pontryagin's minimum principle for impulsive systems to obtain an optimal structure of the controller and use numerical experiments to corroborate our results., Comment: 11 pages

Abstract

Objective. To describe the radiographic phenotype of axial spondyloarthritis (SpA) according to the presence of HLA-B27. Methods. An international collaboration compared the radiographic phenotype of axial SpA according to HLA-B27 status. Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and axial psoriatic arthritis (PsA) were collected. Radiographs were read centrally, blinded to clinical details. The symmetry of the sacroiliac joints and lumbar syndesmophytes and the morphology of syndesmophytes (typical marginal versus atypical chunky), together with the modified Stoke Ankylosing Spondylitis Spine Score and the Psoriatic Arthritis Spondylitis Radiographic Index, were recorded. Results. A total of 244 patients with PsA and 198 patients with AS were included. In PsA, 60 patients (25%) were HLA-B27 positive while in AS, 148 patients (75%) were HLA-B27 positive. Patients with HLA-B27 were younger and more often male and had a longer duration of disease. In multivariable logistic regression, HLA-B27 was significantly associated with syndesmophyte symmetry (odds ratio [OR] 3.02 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.38, 6.61]) and marginal syndesmophytes (OR 1.97 [95% CI 1.16, 3.36]) but not with sacroiliac symmetry. Mean radiographic scores were higher for patients with HLA-B27. Conclusion. Patients with axial SpA who are positive for HLA-B27 have more severe radiographic damage, more marginal syndesmophytes, and more frequent syndesmophyte symmetry compared to patients who are negative for HLA-B27.

Abstract

Background The latest data show that axial involvement in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients (pts) is associated with significantly worse disease status and widespread impairment of patient-reported outcomes (PRO’s) (1). Objectives To analyze clinical characteristics and PRO’s in PsA pts with and without radiographic sacroiliitis (rSI) in the Russian Psoriatic arthritis Registry (RU-PsART).I Methods 385 pts (M/F–172/213) with PsA according to CASPAR criteria were included in the RU-PsART. Data was collected from 25 rheumatology clinics from various regions of the Russian Federation. Median age 45 (Min 20-Max 80) years (yrs), disease duration 3.4 yrs (4 months-32 yrs). Pts underwent standard clinical examination of PsA activity. All pts were studied for patient global disease activity (PGA) and patients’ pain measured by Visual analogue Scale (VAS), and Health assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). Physician’s global assessment of disease activity (PG) was measured by VAS. The examination included X-ray of sacroiliac joints (pelvic radiographs). rSI was defined as bilateral grade ≥2 or unilateral grade ≥3. Pts were split into two groups (gr.): those with rSI [rSI(+)] and those without rSI [rSI(-)]. Medians and quartiles [Me (Q25; Q75)], [Min; Max], U-test and ORs with 95% CI were performed. All CI >1, p Results: gr. rSI(+) included 214 (55.6%) cases (M/F–106/108), gr. rSI(-) included 171 (44.4%) cases (M/F–66/105). Median age in gr. rSI(+) was 45 [Min 20-Max 80] yrs, in gr. rSI(-) it was 46 [Min 21- Max 82] yrs. Significant differences were revealed between gr. rSI(+) and gr. rSI(-). In Leeds Enthesitis index (LEI): in gr. rSI(+) LEI was 0 [0-2], in gr. rSI(-) it was 0 [0-1] (p=0.02). In frequency of dactylitis: in gr. rSI(+) 71 pts had dactylitis, 143 did not have; in gr. rSI(-) 32 pts had dactylitis, 139 did not have. OR 2.2 [1.3-3.5]. in PGA: in gr. rSI(+) it was 56.5 [42.3-70.0], in gr. rSI(-) it was 50.0 [30.0-60.0] (р= 0.00). In patients’ pain: in gr. rSI(+) it was 50.0 [40.0-70.0], in gr. rSI(-) it was 50.0 [20.5-58.8] (р=0.00). In PG: in gr. rSI(+) it was 54.0 [40.0-69.5], in gr. rSI(-) it was 40.0 [25.5-50.0] (р=0.00). In HAQ scores: in gr. rSI(+) it was 1.0 [0.6-1.5], in gr. rSI(-) it was 0 [0-2.2] (р=0.02). Conclusion Axial involvement is identified in more than half (55.6%) of the PsA pts. The presence of axial involvement in PsA pts is associated with significantly worse disease status as measured by frequency of enthesitis and dactylitis, worse PRO’s and with the reduction of patient’s functional capacity. The examination involved HLA B27 antigen status and X-ray of sacroiliac joints (pelvic radiographs). rSI was defined as bilateral grade ≥2 or unilateral grade ≥3. Skin lesion severity was evaluated in terms of body surface area (BSA) affected, and Psoriasis area Severity index (PASI). When BSA was ≥3%, PASI was calculated. Pts were split into two groups (gr.): those with rSI [rSI(+)] and those without rSI [rSI(-)]. Gr. rSI(+) included 214 (55.6%) cases (M/F–106/108), gr. rSI(-) 171 (44.4%) cases (M/F– 66/105). In frequency of erosive radiographic arthritis of feet: in gr. rSI(+) 58 pts had erosive arthritis of feet, 156 did not have, while in gr. rSI(-) 29 pts had erosive arthritis of feet, and 142 did not have. Patients with axial involvement have significantly worse disease status as measured by disease activity and a higher CRP level; they are more likely to have more severe (erosive) peripheral arthritis and more extensive skin lesion area. Abstract

Strains of influenza viruses spread in human populations during every season of epidemics. As the infected population size increases, the virus can mutate itself and grow in its strength. The traditional epidemic Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered model does not capture the mutations of viruses, and hence the model is not sufficient to study epidemics where the virus mutate at the same timescale as the epidemic process. In this work, we establish a novel framework to study the epidemic process with mutations of influenza viruses, which couples the Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered model with replicator dynamics used to describe virus mutations. We formulate an optimal control problem to study the optimal strategies for medical treatment and quarantine. We obtain structural results for the optimal strategies and use numerical examples to illustrate our results.
