We investigate the renormalization of the radiative decays of the Higgs to two gauge bosons in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory at mass dimension eight. Given that these are loop-level processes, their one-loop renormalization can be phenomenologically important when triggered by operators generated through the tree-level exchange of heavy particles (assuming a weakly coupled UV model). By computing the tree-level matching conditions of all relevant extensions of the Standard Model, we demonstrate that this effect is indeed present in the $h\to \gamma Z$ decay at dimension eight, even though it is absent at dimension six. In contrast, the $h\to gg$ and $h\to \gamma\gamma$ decays can only be renormalized by operators generated by one-loop processes. For UV models with heavy vectors, this conclusion hinges on the specific form of their interaction with massless gauge bosons which is required for perturbative unitarity. We study the quantitative impact of the possible logarithmic enhancement of $h\to \gamma Z$, and we propose an observable to boost the sensitivity to this effect. Given the expected increased precision of next-generation high-energy experiments, this dimension-eight contribution could be large enough to be probed and could therefore give valuable clues about new physics by revealing some of its structural features manifesting first at dimension eight., Comment: 32 pages + 3 appendices, 5 tables and 6 figures

Small instantons which increase the axion mass due to an appropriate modification of QCD at a UV scale $\Lambda_{\rm SI}$, can also enhance the effect of CP-violating operators to shift the axion potential minimum by an amount, $\theta_{\rm ind}$, proportional to the flavorful couplings in the SMEFT. Since physical observables must be flavor basis independent, we construct a basis of determinant-like flavor invariants that arise from instanton calculations containing the effects of dimension-six CP-odd operators at the scale $\require{cancel}\Lambda_{\cancel{\rm CP}}$. This new basis provides a more reliable estimate of the shift $\theta_{\rm ind}$, that is severely constrained by neutron electric dipole moment experiments. In particular, for the case of four-quark, semi-leptonic and gluon dipole operators, these invariants are then used to provide improved limits on the ratio of scales $\require{cancel}\Lambda_{\rm SI}/\Lambda_{\cancel{\rm CP}}$ for different flavor scenarios. The CP-odd flavor invariants also provide a classification of the leading effects from Wilson coefficients, and as an example, we show that a semi-leptonic four-fermion operator is subdominant compared to the four-quark operators. More generally, the flavor invariants, together with an instanton NDA, can be used to more accurately estimate small instanton effects in the axion potential that arise from any SMEFT operator., Comment: 49 pages, 4 figures; matches version published in JHEP

The $4.2\,\sigma$ tension in the combined measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_\mu$, and the Standard Model prediction strongly suggests the existence of beyond the Standard Model physics. Following the Standard Model Effective Field Theory approach, we study a particular topology, the \emph{bridge} diagram, which gives a chirally enhanced contribution to $a_\mu$. We classify all possible 2- and 3-field SM extensions that can generate this contribution and present the full $a_\mu$ result for them. Within our approach, we find that several 2-field fermion-scalar extensions which had been previously discarded in the literature -- when only the Yukawa-suppressed contribution was considered -- can actually be viable models to explain the observed anomaly. Furthermore, the 3-field extensions which generate the bridge diagram represent a new class of models to account for $a_\mu$. We explore a particular 3-field extension which, beyond explaining $a_\mu$, can also account for the neutral $B$-meson anomalies and the Cabibbo angle anomaly. We calculate the renormalisation group running of the bosonic Standard Model (SM) effective operators at one loop and to order $v^4/\Lambda^4$, with $v\sim 246$ GeV being the electroweak scale and $\Lambda$ the unknown new physics threshold. We focus on contributions driven by one dimension-eight term and SM couplings, thus extending (and completing) the effort initiated in arXiv:2106.05291, in which quantum corrections from pairs of dimension-six interactions were considered. In this contribution to the Snowmass 2021 process we review theoretical developments in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with a focus on effects at the dimension-8 level and beyond. We review the theoretical advances that led to the complete construction of the operator bases for the dimension-8 and dimension-9 SMEFT Lagrangians. We discuss the possibility of obtaining all-orders results in the $1/\Lambda$ expansion for certain SMEFT observables as well as the current status of renormalization group running and implications for positivity, and briefly present the on-shell approach to constructing SMEFT amplitudes. Finally we present several new phenomenological effects that first arise at dimension-8 and discuss the impact of these terms on experimental analyses., Comment: 37 pages, 6 figures; contribution to Snowmass 2021; new section and additional authors

We present a basis of dimension-eight Green's functions involving Standard Model (SM) bosonic fields, consisting of 86 new operators. Rather than using algebraic identities and integration by parts, we prove the independence of these interactions in momentum space, including a discussion on evanescent bosonic operators. Our results pave the way for renormalising the SM effective field theory (SMEFT), as well as for performing matching of ultraviolet models onto the SMEFT, to higher order. To demonstrate the potential of our construction, we have implemented our basis in matchmakereft and used it to integrate out a heavy singlet scalar and a heavy quadruplet scalar up to one loop. We provide the corresponding dimension-eight Wilson coefficients. Likewise, we show how our results can be easily used to simplify cumbersome redundant Lagrangians arising, for example, from integrating out heavy fields using the path-integral approach to matching., Comment: 32 pages, 4 tables

We describe current and future hadron collider limits on new vector-like leptons with exotic decays. We consider the possibility that, besides standard decays, the new leptons can also decay into a Standard Model charged lepton and a stable particle like a dark photon. To increase their applicability, our results are given in terms of arbitrary branching ratios in the different decay channels. In the case that the dark photon is stable at cosmological scales we discuss the interplay between the dark photon and the vector-like lepton in generating the observed dark matter relic abundance and the complementarity of collider searches and dark matter phenomenology., Comment: 31 pages, 21 figures, 3 tables

We compute the one-loop renormalisation group running of the bosonic Standard Model effective operators to order $v^4/\Lambda^4$, with $v\sim 246$ GeV being the electroweak scale and $\Lambda$ the unknown new physics threshold. We concentrate on the effects triggered by pairs of the leading dimension-six interactions, namely those that can arise at tree level in weakly-coupled ultraviolet completions of the Standard Model. We highlight some interesting consequences, including the interplay between positivity bounds and the form of the anomalous dimensions; the non renormalisation of the $S$ and $U$ parameters; or the importance of radiative corrections to the Higgs potential for the electroweak phase transition. The couplings of axion-like particles are probed by different experiments across a huge range of energy scales. Accordingly, a consistent analysis of the corresponding constraints requires the use of the renormalization group equations. We compute the full one-loop renormalization group evolution of all -- relevant and marginal -- parameters in the effective field theory for axion-like particles up to dimension five, above and below the electroweak scale, assuming only that new physics does not violate CP. We also include a detailed discussion of the different bases used in the literature, the relations among them and the interplay of the CP and shift symmetries., Comment: 28 pages + 4 appendices. We derive a full analytical approximation to the stochastic gravitational wave background generated by the loops that are produced throughout the cosmological evolution of cosmic string networks. We show that this approximation not only predicts the amplitude of the radiation-era plateau exactly, but also provides a good fit to the high-frequency cut-off and to the low-frequency peak generated by the loops that decay during the matter era, irrespective of cosmic string tension and of the length of loops created. We then find that it provides a good quantitative description of the full stochastic gravitational wave background across the relevant frequency range., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PRD

A novel method to study the fundamental problem of quantum double well potential systems that display magnetic hysteresis is proposed. The method, coined quantum-first-order reversal curve (QFORC) analysis, is inspired by the conventional first-order reversal curve (FORC) protocol, based on the Preisach model for hysteretic phenomena. We successfully tested the QFORC method in the peculiar hysteresis of the Mn12Ac molecular magnet, which is governed by macroscopic quantum tunneling of magnetization. The QFORC approach allows one to quickly reproduce well the experimental magnetization behavior, and more importantly to acquire information that is difficult to infer from the usual methods based on matrix diagonalization. It is possible to separate the thermal activation and tunneling contributions from the magnetization variation, as well as understand each experimentally observed jump of the magnetization curve and associate them with specific quantum transitions., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures
