Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is rare in the pediatric population, accounting for 2-3% of childhood leukemia cases, with an annual incidence of one case per million children. The low toxicity profile of imatinib mesylate has led to its approval as a front-line therapy in children for whom interferon treatment has failed or who have relapsed after allogeneic transplantation. We describe the positive responses of 2 children (case 1 - from a 7-year-old male since May 2005; case 2 - from a 5-year-old female since June 2006) with Philadelphia-positive chromosome CML treated with imatinib (300 mg/day, orally) for up to 28 months, as evaluated by morphological, cytogenetic, and molecular approaches. Our patients are alive, are in the chronic phase, and are in continuous morphological complete remission.

Laurus nobilis L. (Family Lauraceae) is an evergreen tree widely distributed in the Mediterranean area and Europe. It is used in folk medicine of different countries as a stomachic and carminative as well as in treatment of gastric diseases. Extracts obtained with different methods (methanol and chloroform) from laurel leaves were evaluated for their gastroprotective activities in the rat. The antioxidant capacity of the different extracts has been also measured in vitro. In order to confirm the activities investigated, histological observations were performed. The gastric damage was significantly reduced by all extracts administered. The more effective protection was produced by chloroformic and methanolic crude extracts. The results obtained after oral administration of L. nobilis leaf extracts are in good agreement with their antioxidant capacity, confirming the relationship between pharmacological efficacy and antiradical activity. Histological evidences confirm the results evaluated with the animal procedures.

Il contributo ripercorre criticamente le prnicipali vicende del dibattito sul federalismo fiscale in Italia nel corso del 2006. Dopo i lunghi anni di torpore della scorsa legislatura, l’ultimo scorcio del 2006 e i primi mesi del 2007 hanno conosciuto una ripresa di attenzione della politica sull’urgenza di dare finalmente un assetto definitivo alle relazioni finanziarie tra Stato, Regioni ed Enti locali in attuazione della Costituzione del 2001. Qualche passo iniziale, per taluni aspetti un po’ incerto e disorganico, è stato fatto in questa direzione con la manovra finanziaria per il 2007. Ma soprattutto è ripreso, dopo l’inequivocabile azzeramento che il referendum popolare del giugno 2006 ha riservato alla «riforma della riforma» costituzionale del centro-destra, il confronto tra governo ed Autonomie sugli aspetti strutturali del federalismo fiscale.

Obiettivo di questo contributo è discutere la difficile convivenza tra la disciplina comunitaria degli aiuti di Stato e il riconoscimento di maggiori poteri di politica economica a favore dei governi sub-nazionali. In particolare, l’attenzione è concentrata sugli aiuti di Stato fiscali, cioè quelli che si realizzano mediante agevolazioni di natura tributaria . Più specificamente la sezione 2 illustra l’assetto istituzionale dei poteri comunitari in materia fiscale e il ruolo critico dello Stato nazionale come unico referente delle istituzioni comunitarie. Verrà poi presentata una recente sentenza della Corte di giustizia delle Comunità europee che innova la disciplina degli aiuti di Stato, riconoscendo maggiori spazi all’autonomia tributaria decentrata. Nella Sezione 3 vengono indagati i fondamenti economici della nuova prospettiva comunitaria, evidenziandone le incoerenze e le difficoltà di applicazione concreta. La sezione 4 discute i possibili effetti che il rafforzamento dell’autonomia tributaria dei governi regionali e locali, potrà comportare per gli scenari di concorrenza fiscale nel mercato unico europeo. La sezione 5 conclude.

Brassica vegetables and glucosinolates contained therein are supposed to reduce the risk of cancer and to possess health-promoting properties. The benefits of a Brassica-based diet may be particularly expressed by eating sprouts, in which the glucosinolate content is higher than in mature vegetables. With this in mind, a first objective of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant properties of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) sprouts (Kaiware Daikon) extract (KDE), in which the glucosinolate glucoraphasatin (GRH), showing some antioxidant activity, is present at 10.5% w/w. The contribution of GRH to KDE's antioxidant activity was considered in two chemical assays (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity and Briggs-Rauscher methods). The total phenol assay by Folin-Ciocalteu reagent was performed to quantify the reducing capacity of KDE. Finally, on the basis of the putative choleretic properties of antioxidant plant extracts, the effect on the bile flow of KDE administration was investigated in an animal experimental model. The findings showed that KDE has antioxidant properties and significantly induced bile flow in rats administered 1.5 g/kg of body weight for 4 consecutive days.
