Abstract

Aedes aegypti, the main arbovirus vector of the Yellow fever, Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika viruses, is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world. Preventive control efforts have been implemented worldwide aimed at reducing its impact on human health. The recent reduction of chemicals available for vector control due to their negative impact on the environment and human health and the increase in mosquito resistance to insecticides have driven the research community to identify and evaluate sustainable alternatives to synthetic insecticides. In this study, the potential larvicidal effect of essential oils extracted from Ocimum campechianum, Ocotea quixos and Piper aduncum were tested in vitro. GC and GC–MS analyses showed that the main compounds were eugenol (18%), 1,8-cineole (39%) and dillapiole (48%), respectively. Susceptibility to essential oils was measured according to the WHO protocol. After 24 h, the mean percentage mortality ranged from 2.7 to 100% for P. aduncum, from 2.2 to 100% for O. campechianum, and from 2.9 to 100% for O. quixos. The highest potential was displayed by P. aduncum, followed by O. campechianum and O. quixos, with LC50 values of 25.7, 69.3 and 75.5 ppm, respectively. The rapid and effective larvicidal activity of these three oils led us to consider these results to be promising, also considering the possibility of local cultivation of these plants in tropical and subtropical areas and the simple technology for their large-scale preparation and production. Further studies are needed to evaluate the individual components and their activity as larvicides.

Abstract

Aim of the project was the bioassay guided optimisation of extraction methods applied to wine chain by-product to obtain extracts, fractions and biologically active biomolecules with a possible use in the nutraceutical and cosmeceutical industry. Exhausted red and white grape marc were extracted using water:ethanol 50:50 with ultrasound assisted extraction and Naviglio® technology; and also with supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and steam-distillation obtaining different phytocomplexes. Each extract was characterised by different molecular category: exhausted red grape marc (VCR) by anthocyanins, exhausted white grape marc (VCB) by flavonoids, and grapeseed (VIN) by proanthocyanins. SFE and steam-distillation, instead, highlighted the presence of fatty acids and their ester in every matrix, but terpenoids were not revealed at level major or equal than 0.1%, except for manoyl oxide in VCR (2.89%). VIN was the most abundant matrix in polyphenols (506.24 ± 55.91 mg gallic acid/g dried extract), and it showed the highest antioxidant activity (IC50 of 4.30 μg/mL). Regarding the antimicrobial activity, the hydroalcoholic extracts from VCR, VCB and VIN were tested but no noteworthy activities have been recorded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A novel method for the synthesis of chiral 1,2-diols is described. The scheme involves the reduction of the corresponding alpha-diketones with the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine nucleotide. The reaction is catalyzed by a diacetyl reductase from Bacillus stearothemophilus. The conditions and mechanisms for the reactions are presented.

Abstract

Los hongos fitopatógenos ocasionan relevantes pérdidas de los cultivos agrícolas, tanto en fase de campo como en poscosecha. Se evaluó el uso de aceites esenciales extraídos de plantas amazónicas, en diferentes concentraciones, para el control in vitro de estos hongos. Los aceites esenciales se obtuvieron por destilación en arrastre de vapor a partir de dos especies vegetales (Ocotea quixos y Piper aduncum) colectadas en la provincia amazónica de Pastaza, Ecuador. La actividad antifúngica se evaluó mediante el método de la difusión en agar sobre los hongos fitopatógenos Aspergillus oryzae, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Fusarium solani, Rhyzopus stolonifer, Moniliophthora roreri y Phytophthora sp. El aceite esencial de O. quixos usado en su máxima concentración (500 µL·mL-1) inhibió el crecimiento de todas las cepas alcanzando 94 % de inhibición promedio y registrando un comportamiento similar al aceite esencial de tomillo (Thymus vulgaris), el cual fue utilizado como patrón de comparación. El aceite esencial de P. aduncum, también en su máxima concentración mostró los mayores porcentajes de inhibición frente a F. solani (94 %) y Phytophthora sp. (91 %). Los resultados sugieren el empleo de estos aceites esenciales como agentes de control biológico de hongos fitopatógenos. The phytopathogenic fungi cause relevant crop losses, both under field and post-harvest conditions. The use of essential oils extracted from Amazonian plants, at different concentrations, was investigated, in order to evaluate in vitro properties against those fungi. Essential oils were obtained by steam distillation, from two plant species (Ocotea quixos and Piper aduncum) collected in the Amazonian province of Pastaza, Ecuador. The antifungal activity was evaluated through the agar diffusion method against the Aspergillus oryzae, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Fusarium solani, Rhyzopus stolonifer, Moniliophthora roreri and Phytophthora sp. The O. quixos essential oil, in its maximum concentration (500 µL·mL-1), inhibited the growth of all strains, reaching an average of 94 % inhibition rate, similar to the essential oil of thyme (Thymus vulgaris), which was used as standard. The P. aduncum essential oil, also in the maximum concentration, showed the best inhibition percentage against F. solani (94 %) and Phytophthora sp. (91 %). These results suggest the use of both essential oils as agents of biological control of phytopathogenic fungi.
