Using the upGREAT instrument on SOFIA, we have imaged the [C II] 158 {\mu}m fine structure line emission in bright-rimmed pillars located at the southern edge of the IC1848 H II region, and carried out pointed observations of the [O I] 63 and 145 {\mu}m fine structure lines toward selected positions. The observations are used to characterize the morphology, velocity field, and the physical conditions in the G1 - G3 filaments. The velocity-resolved [C II] spectra show evidence of a velocity shift at the head of the brightest G1 filament, possibly caused by radiation pressure from the impinging UV photons or the rocket effect of the evaporating gas. Archival Herschel PACS and SPIRE data imply H2 column densities in the range 10^{21} - 10^{22} cm^{-2}, corresponding to maximum visual extinction AV = 10 mag, and average H2 volume density of about 4500 cm^{-3} in the filaments. The [C II] emission traces ~ 17% of the total H2 column density, as derived from dust SED fits. PDR models are unable to explain the observed line intensities of the two [O I] fine structure lines in IC1848, with the observed [O I] 145 {\mu}m line being too strong compared to the model predictions. The [O I] lines in IC1848 are overall weak and the signal-to-noise ratio is limited. However, our observations suggest that the [O I] 63/145 {\mu}m intensity ratio is a sensitive probe of the physical conditions in photon dominated regions such as IC1848. We investigate the dynamical and physical structures of bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) in a nearby HII region. We focused on carbon- and oxygen-bearing species that trace photon-dominated regions (PDRs) and warm molecular cloud surfaces in order to understand the effect of UV radiation from the exciting stars on the cloud structure. We mapped four regions around the most prominent BRCs at scales of 4--10 arcmin in the HII region IC 1396 in [CII] 158 micron with (up)GREAT on board SOFIA. IC 1396 is predominantly excited by an O6.5V star. Toward IC 1396A, we also observed [OI] 63 micron and 145 micron. We combined these observations with JCMT archive data, which provide the low-J transitions of CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O. All spectra are velocity-resolved. The line profiles show a variety of velocity structures, which we investigated in detail for all observed emission lines. We find no clear sign of photoevaporating flows in the [CII] spectra, although the uncertainty in the location of the BRCs along the line of sight makes this interpretation inconclusive. Our analysis of the [$^{13}$CII] emission in IC 1396A suggests that the [CII] is likely mostly optically thin. The heating efficiency, measured by the ([CII]+[OI] 63 micron)/far-infrared intensity ratio, is higher in the northern part of IC 1396A than in the southern part, which may indicate a difference in the dust properties of the two areas. The complex velocity structures identified in the BRCs of IC 1396, which is apparently a relatively simple HII region, highlight the importance of velocity-resolved data for disentangling different components along the line of sight and thus facilitating a detailed study of the dynamics of the cloud. Hub-filament systems (HFSs) being the potential sites of formation of star clusters and high mass stars, provide a test bed for the current theories that attempt to explain star formation globally. It is thus important to study a large number of HFSs using both intensity and velocity information to constrain these objects better observationally. We present here a study of the hub-filament system associated with G6.55-0.1 using newly obtained observations of radio continuum and $J$=2--1 transition of CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O. The radio continuum maps show multiple peaks that coincide with far-infrared dust continuum peaks indicating the presence of more than one young massive stars in the hub of the HFS. We used the velocity information from the C$^{18}$O(2--1) map to (a) show that the source G6.55-0.1 is not physically associated with the SNR W28 and (b) disentangle and identify the velocity components genuinely associated with G6.55-0.1. Among the velocity-coherent structures identified, the two filaments at 13.8 and 17.3 km s$^{-1}$ contribute a total mass accretion rate of $\sim$3000 M$_{\odot}$ Myr$^{-1}$ to the hub. Both the filaments also show V-shaped structure, characteristic of gravitational collapse, in their velocity profile at the location of the hub. Estimated mass per unit length of the segments of the filaments are smaller than the critical line masses derived from virial equilibrium considerations. This suggests that while the filaments are not gravitationally collapsing as a whole, the spectra from the hub indicate that the inner parts are dynamically decoupled and collapsing to form stars., Comment: This paper is accepted in Astrophysical Journal on 04/04/2024

Stellar feedback plays a crucial role in star formation and the life cycle of molecular clouds. The intense star formation region 30 Doradus, which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), is a unique target for detailed investigation of stellar feedback owing to the proximity of the hosting galaxy and modern observational capabilities that together allow us to resolve individual molecular clouds $-$ nurseries of star formation. We study the impact of large-scale feedback on the molecular gas using the new observational data in the $^{12}$CO(3$-$2) line obtained with the APEX telescope. Our data cover an unprecedented area of 13.9 sq. deg. of the LMC disc with a spatial resolution of 5 pc and provide an unbiased view on the molecular clouds in the galaxy. Using this data, we locate molecular clouds in the disc of the galaxy, estimate their properties such as the areal number density, relative velocity and separation, width of the line profile, CO-line luminosity, size, virial mass and compare these properties between the clouds of 30 Doradus and those in the rest of the LMC disc. We find that compared with the rest of the observed molecular clouds in the LMC disc, those in 30 Doradus show the highest areal number density; they are spatially more clustered, move faster with respect to each other and feature larger linewidths. In parallel, we do not find statistically significant differences in such properties as the CO-line luminosity, size, and virial mass between the clouds of 30 Doradus and the rest of the observed field. We investigate the physical structure and conditions of photodissociation regions (PDRs) and molecular gas within the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula using SOFIA FEEDBACK observations of the [C II] 158 micron line. These observations are velocity resolved to 0.5 km s$^{-1}$ and are analyzed alongside a collection of complimentary data with similar spatial and spectral resolution: the [O I] 63 micron line, also observed with SOFIA, and rotational lines of CO, HCN, HCO$^{+}$, CS, and N$_2$H$^{+}$. Using the superb spectral resolution of SOFIA, APEX, CARMA, and BIMA, we reveal the relationships between the warm PDR and cool molecular gas layers in context of the Pillars' kinematic structure. We assemble a geometric picture of the Pillars and their surroundings informed by illumination patterns and kinematic relationships and derive physical conditions in the PDRs associated with the Pillars. We estimate an average molecular gas density $n_{{\rm H}_2} \sim 1.3 \times 10^5$ cm$^{-3}$ and an average atomic gas density $n_{\rm H} \sim 1.8 \times 10^4$ cm$^{-3}$ and infer that the ionized, atomic, and molecular phases are in pressure equilibrium if the atomic gas is magnetically supported. We find pillar masses of 103, 78, 103, and 18 solar masses for P1a, P1b, P2, and P3 respectively, and evaporation times of $\sim$1-2 Myr. The dense clumps at the tops of the pillars are currently supported by the magnetic field. Our analysis suggests that ambipolar diffusion is rapid and these clumps are likely to collapse within their photoevaporation timescales., Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures. We have mapped the NGC 2023 reflection nebula in the 63 and 145 micron transitions of [O I] and the 158 micron [C II] spectral lines using the heterodyne receiver upGREAT on SOFIA. The observations were used to identify the diffuse and dense components of the PDR traced by the [C II] and [O I] emission, respectively. The velocity-resolved observations reveal the presence of a significant column of low-excitation atomic oxygen, seen in absorption in the [O I] 63 micron spectra, amounting to about 20-60% of the oxygen column seen in emission in the [O I] 145 micron spectra. Some self-absorption is also seen in [C II], but for the most part it is hardly noticeable. The [C II] and [O I] 63 micron spectra show strong red- and blue-shifted wings due to photo evaporation flows especially in the southeastern and southern part of the reflection nebula, where comparison with the mid- and high-J CO emission indicates that the C+ region is expanding into a dense molecular cloud. Using a two-slab toy model the large-scale self-absorption seen in [O I] 63 micron is readily explained as originating in foreground low-excitation gas associated with the source. Similar columns have also been observed recently in other Galactic photon-dominated-regions (PDRs). These results have two implications: for the velocity-unresolved extra-galactic observations this could impact the use of [O I] 63 micron as a tracer of massive star formation and secondly the widespread self-absorption in [O I] 63 micron leads to underestimate of the column density of atomic oxygen derived from this tracer and necessitates the use of alternative indirect methods., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We used high-resolution [C II] 158 $\mu$m mapping of two nebulae IC 59 and IC 63 from SOFIA/upGREAT in conjunction with ancillary data on the gas, dust, and polarization to probe the kinematics, structure, and magnetic properties of their photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). The nebulae are part of the Sh 2-185 H II region illuminated by the B0 IVe star $\gamma$ Cas. The velocity structure of each PDR changes with distance from $\gamma$ Cas, consistent with driving by the radiation. Based on previous FUV flux measurements of, and the known distance to $\gamma$ Cas along with the predictions of 3D distances to the clouds, we estimated the FUV radiation field strength (G0) at the clouds. Assuming negligible extinction between the star and clouds, we find their 3D distances from $\gamma$ Cas. For IC 63, our results are consistent with earlier estimates of distance from Andersson et al. (2013), locating the cloud at 2 pc from $\gamma$ Cas, at an angle of 58 to the plane of the sky, behind the star. For IC 59, we derive a distance of 4.5 pc at an angle of 70 in front of the star. We do not detect any significant correlation between the orientation of the magnetic field (Soam et al. 2017) and the velocity gradients of [C II] gas, indicating a moderate magnetic field strength. The kinetic energy in IC 63 is estimated to be order of ten higher than the magnetic energies. This suggests that kinetic pressure in this nebula is dominant.

Hub-filament systems (HFSs) are potential sites of formation of star clusters and high mass stars. To understand the HFSs and to provide observational constraints on current theories that attempt to explainstar formation globally, we report a study of the region associated with G326.27-0.49 using infrared data of dust continuum and newly obtained observations on molecular tracers using the APEX telescope. We use the spectroscopic observations to identify velocity-coherent structures (filaments and clumps) and study their properties at a resolution of 0.4 pc. The region contains two main velocity components: first component shows four filaments between -63 and -55 km/s forming a spiral structure converging in a hub, the second filamentary component at -72 km/s harbors a massive young stellar object and possibly interacts with the hub. The clumps harbouring the three main YSOs in the region are massive (187-535 Msun), have luminosities consistent with B-type stars, have central densities of ~10^6 cm^-3 and drive large outflows. Majority of the velocity-coherent clumps in the region show virial parameters between 2-7, which considering the detection of protostars implies collapse to be gradual. We conclude that the region consists of a network of filaments through which mass accretes (~10^-4 Msun/yr) onto the hub. The hub and some of the ends of filaments appear to be undergoing collapse to form new stars. A substantial fraction of oxygen in diffuse clouds is unaccounted for by observations and is postulated to be in an unknown refractory form, referred to as unidentified depleted oxygen (UDO), which, depending on the local gas density, may contribute up to 50% of the total oxygen content. Previous Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) observations suggest that a significant fraction of oxygen in even denser, translucent clouds may be in atomic form. We have analyzed velocity-resolved archival SOFIA observations of the 63 $\mu$m fine-structure [O I] transition toward the high-mass star-forming region Sgr B2(M) in the Central Molecular Zone. The foreground spiral-arm clouds as well as the extended Sgr B2 envelope between the Sun and the background dust continuum source produce multiple [O i] absorption components, spectrally separated in velocity space. The gas-phase atomic oxygen column density in foreground clouds toward Sgr B2 is well correlated with the total hydrogen column density, with an average atomic oxygen abundance of $(2.51 \pm 0.69) \times 10^{-4}$ with respect to hydrogen nuclei. This value is in good agreement with the earlier ISO measurements on the same line of sight, and is about 35% lower than the total interstellar medium oxygen abundance in the low-density warm gas, as measured in the UV. We find no evidence that a significant fraction of the oxygen on the line of sight toward Sagittarius B2 is in the form of UDO., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, and 2 appendices. FU Orionis-type objects (FUors) are low-mass pre-main-sequence objects which go through a short-lived phase (~100 years) of increased mass accretion rate (from 10^-8 to 10^-4 M_sun yr^-1). These eruptive young stars are in the early stages of stellar evolution and, thus, still deeply embedded in a massive envelope that feeds material to the circumstellar disk that is then accreted onto the star. Some FUors drive molecular outflows, i.e. low-velocity wide-angle magneto-hydrodynamical winds, that inject energy and momentum back to the surrounding envelopes, and help clear the material surrounding the young star. Here we present a 12CO (3--2), 13CO (3--2) and 12CO (4--3) survey of 20 FUor-type eruptive young stars observed with APEX. We use our 13CO (3--2) observations to measure the masses of the envelopes surrounding each FUor and find an agreement with the FUor evolutionary trend found from the 10um silicate feature. We find outflows in 11 FUors, calculate their masses and other kinematic properties, and compare these with those of outflows found around quiescent young stellar objects gathered from the literature. This comparison indicates that outflows in FUors are more massive than outflows in quiescent sources, and that FUor outflows have a higher ratio outflow mass with respect to the envelope than the quiescent sample, indicating that the eruptive young stars have lower star-forming efficiencies. Finally, we found that the outflow forces in FUors are similar to those of quiescent young stellar objects, indicating that their accretion histories are similar or that the FUor outflows have lower velocities., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 29 pages, 8 tables, 10 figures, 2 figuresets

The 1.3deg (G1.3) and 1.6deg (G1.6) cloud complexes in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy have been proposed to possibly reside at the intersection region of the X1 and X2 orbits for several reasons. This includes the detection of co-spatial low- and high-velocity clouds, high velocity dispersion, high fractional molecular abundances of shock-tracing molecules, and kinetic temperatures that are higher than for usual CMZ clouds. We mapped both cloud complexes in molecular lines in the frequency range from 85 to 475GHz with the IRAM 30m and the APEX 12m telescopes. The kinematic structure of G1.3 reveals an `emission bridge' at intermediate velocities (~150km/s) connecting low-velocity (~100km/s) and high-velocity (~180km/s) gas and an overall fluffy shell-like structure. These may represent observational evidence of cloud-cloud interactions. Low- and high-velocity gas components in G1.6 do not show such evidence of interaction, suggesting that they are spatially separated. We selected three positions in each cloud complex for further analysis. Based on non-LTE modelling of an ensemble of CH3CN lines, we derived kinetic temperatures of 60-100K and H2 volume densities of 10$^4$-10$^5$cm-3 in both complexes. Molecular abundances relative to H2 suggest a similar chemistry of the two clouds, which is moreover similar to that of other GC clouds. We conclude that G1.3 may indeed exhibit signs of cloud-cloud interactions. We propose an interaction of gas that is accreted from the near-side dust lane to the CMZ, with gas pre-existing at this location. Low- and high-velocity components in G1.6 are rather coincidentally observed along the same line of sight. They may be associated with either overshot decelerated gas from the far-side dust line or actual CMZ gas and high-velocity gas moving on a dust lane. Spectral lines of ammonia, NH$_3$, are useful probes of the physical conditions in dense molecular cloud cores. In addition to advantages in spectroscopy, ammonia has also been suggested to be resistant to freezing onto grain surfaces, which should make it a superior tool for studying the interior parts of cold, dense cores. Here we present high-resolution NH$_3$ observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) and Green Bank Telescope (GBT) towards a prestellar core. These observations show an outer region with a fractional NH$_3$ abundance of X(NH$_3$) = (1.975$\pm$0.005)$\times 10^{-8}$ ($\pm 10\%$ systematic), but it also reveals that after all, the X(NH$_3$) starts to decrease above a H$_2$ column density of $\approx 2.6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. We derive a density model for the core and find that the break-point in the fractional abundance occurs at the density n(H$_2$) $\sim 2\times10^5$ cm$^{-3}$, and beyond this point the fractional abundance decreases with increasing density, following the power law $n^{-1.1}$. This power-law behavior is well reproduced by chemical models where adsorption onto grains dominates the removal of ammonia and related species from the gas at high densities. We suggest that the break-point density changes from core to core depending on the temperature and the grain properties, but that the depletion power law is anyway likely to be close to $n^{-1}$ owing to the dominance of accretion in the central parts of starless cores., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. 18 Pages, 16 Figures, 3 Tables

(Abridged) In this paper, we investigate the physical conditions of [CI]-traced gas in high-mass star-forming regions by analyzing APEX [CI] 492 GHz single-pointing observations of the ATLASGAL Top100 sources along with other multi-wavelength data. Our 98 sources are clearly detected in [CI] 492 GHz emission, and the observed integrated intensities and line widths tend to increase toward evolved stages of star formation. In addition to these "main" components that are associated with the Top100 sample, 41 emission and two absorption features are identified by their velocities toward 28 and two lines of sight respectively as "secondary" components. The secondary components have systematically smaller integrated intensities and line widths than the main components. We found that [CI] 492 GHz and 13CO(2-1) are well correlated with the 13CO(2-1)-to-[CI] 492 GHz integrated intensity ratio varying from 0.2 to 5.3. In addition, we derived the H2-to-[CI] conversion factor, X(CI), by dividing 870 micron-based H2 column densities by the observed [CI] 492 GHz integrated intensities and found that X(CI) ranges from 2.3e20 to 1.3e22 with a median of 1.7e21. In contrast to the strong correlation with 13CO(2-1), [CI] 492 GHz has a scattered relation with the 870 micron-traced molecular gas. Finally, we performed LTE and non-LTE analyses of the [CI] 492 GHz and 809 GHz data for a subset of the Top100 sample and inferred that [CI] emission likely originates from warm (kinetic temperature > 60 K), optically thin (opacity < 0.5), and highly pressurized (thermal pressure ~ e5 to e8 K/cm3) regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We have revisited the chemistry of chlorine-bearing species in the diffuse interstellar medium with new observations of the HCl$^+$ molecular ion and new astrochemical models. Using the GREAT instrument on board SOFIA, we observed the $^2\Pi_{3/2}\, J = 5/2 - 3/2$ transition of HCl$^+$ near 1444 GHz toward the bright THz continuum source W49N. We detected absorption by diffuse foreground gas unassociated with the background source, and were able to thereby measure the distribution of HCl$^+$ along the sight-line. We interpreted the observational data using an updated version of an astrochemical model used previously in a theoretical study of Cl-bearing interstellar molecules. The abundance of HCl$^+$ was found to be almost constant relative to the related H$_2$Cl$^+$ ion, but the observed $n({\rm H_2Cl^+})/n({\rm HCl^+})$ abundance ratio exceeds the predictions of our astrochemical model by an order-of-magnitude. This discrepancy suggests that the rate of the primary destruction process for ${\rm H_2Cl^+}$, dissociative recombination, has been significantly overestimated. For HCl$^+$, the model predictions can provide a satisfactory fit to the observed column densities along the W49N sight-line while simultaneously accounting for the ${\rm OH^+}$ and ${\rm H_2O^+}$ column densities., Comment: 34 pages. 8 figures. We discuss the detection of 14 rovibrational lines of CH$^+$, obtained with the iSHELL spectrograph on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Maunakea. Our observations in the 3.49 - 4.13 $\mu$m spectral region, obtained with a 0.375" slit width that provided a spectral resolving power $\lambda/\Delta \lambda \sim 80,000$, have resulted in the unequivocal detection of the $R(0) - R(3)$ and $P(1)-P(10)$ transitions within the $v=1-0$ band of CH$^+$. The $R$-branch transitions are anomalously weak relative to the $P$-branch transitions, a behavior that is explained accurately by rovibronic calculations of the transition dipole moment reported in a companion paper (Changala et al. 2021). Nine infrared transitions of H$_2$ were also detected in these observations, comprising the $S(8)$, $S(9)$, $S(13)$ and $S(15)$ pure rotational lines; the $v=1-0$ $O(4) - O(7)$ lines, and the $v=2-1$ $O(5)$ line. We present a photodissociation region model, constrained by the CH$^+$ and H$_2$ line fluxes that we measured, that includes a detailed treatment of the excitation of CH$^+$ by inelastic collisions, optical pumping, and chemical ("formation") pumping. The latter process is found to dominate the excitation of the observed rovibrational lines of CH$^+$, and the model is remarkably successful in explaining both the absolute and relative strengths of the CH$^+$ and H$_2$ lines., Comment: 38 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Radiative and mechanical feedback of massive stars regulates star formation and galaxy evolution. Positive feedback triggers the creation of new stars by collecting dense shells of gas, while negative feedback disrupts star formation by shredding molecular clouds. Although key to understanding star formation, their relative importance is unknown. Here, we report velocity-resolved observations from the SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) legacy program FEEDBACK of the massive star-forming region RCW 120 in the [CII] 1.9-THz fine-structure line, revealing a gas shell expanding at 15 km/s. Complementary APEX (Atacama Pathfinder Experiment) CO J=3-2 345-GHz observations exhibit a ring structure of molecular gas, fragmented into clumps that are actively forming stars. 4GREAT is an extension of the German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz frequencies (GREAT) operated aboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). The spectrometer comprises four different detector bands and their associated subsystems for simultaneous and fully independent science operation. All detector beams are co-aligned on the sky. The frequency bands of 4GREAT cover 491-635, 890-1090, 1240-1525 and 2490-2590 GHz, respectively. Following up on our discovery of terahertz water masers, reported in 2017, we report two further detections of water maser emission at frequencies above 1 THz. Using the GREAT instrument on SOFIA, we have detected emission in the 1.296411 THz $8_{27}-7_{34}$ transition of water toward two additional oxygen-rich evolved stars, omicron Ceti (Mira) and R Crateris, and obtained an upper limit on the 1.296 THz line emission from U Orionis. Toward these three sources, and toward the red supergiant star VY Canis Majorae from which 1.296 THz line emission was reported previously, we have also observed several lower-frequency (sub)millimeter water maser transitions using the APEX 12-m telescope along with the 22 GHz transition using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. We have used a simple model to analyse the multi-transition data thereby obtained. Adopting, as a prior, independent literature estimates of the mass-loss-rates in these four sources and in W Hydrae, we infer water abundances in a remarkably narrow range: $n({\rm H_2O})/n({\rm H_2}) = 1.4 - 2.5 \times 10^{-4}$. For o Cet, VY CMa, and W Hya, the model is successful in predicting the maser line fluxes to within a typical factor $\sim 1.6 - 3$. For R Crt and U Ori, the model is less successful, with typical line flux predictions lying an order of magnitude above or below the observations; such discrepancies are perhaps unsurprising given the exponential nature of maser amplification., Comment: 37 pages, including 10 figures. We aim at carrying out a comprehensive study of the nearby composite AGN-SB galaxy, NGC 4945, using spectroscopic and photometric data from the Herschel satellite. In particular, we want to characterize the thermal structure in this galaxy by a multi-transitions analysis of the spatial distribution of the 12^CO emission at different spatial scales using HIFI, PACS, SPIRE as well as APEX data. We combined the 12^CO/IR flux ratios and the LTE analysis of the 12^CO images to derive the thermal structure of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) for spatial scales raging from <200 pc to 2 kpc. From the 12^CO analysis we found clear trend in the distribution of the derived temperatures and the 12^CO/IR ratios. It is remarkable that at intermediate scales (360 pc-1 kpc) we see large temperatures in the direction of the X-ray outflow while at smaller scales (<200 pc-360 pc), the highest temperature, derived from the high-J lines, is not found toward the nucleus, but toward the galaxy plane. The thermal structure derived from the 12CO multi-transition analysis suggests that mechanical heating, like shocks or turbulence, dominates the heating of the ISM in the nucleus of NGC 4945 located beyond 100 pc from the center of the galaxy. This result is further supported by the Kazandjian et al. 2015 models, which are able to reproduce the emission observed at high-J (PACS) 12^CO transitions when mechanical heating mechanisms are included. In recent years, a plethora of high spectral resolution observations of sub-mm and FIR transitions of methylidene (CH), have demonstrated this radical to be a valuable proxy for H2, that can be used for characterising molecular gas within the interstellar medium (ISM) on a Galactic scale, including the CO-dark component. Here we report the discovery of the 13CH isotopologue in the ISM using the upGREAT receiver on board SOFIA. We have detected the three hyperfine structure components of the 2THz frequency transition from its ground-state toward four high-mass star-forming regions and determine 13CH column densities. The ubiquity of molecules containing carbon in the ISM has turned the determination of the ratio between the abundances of carbon's two stable isotopes, 12C/13C, into a cornerstone for Galactic chemical evolution studies. Whilst displaying a rising gradient with Galactocentric distance, this ratio, when measured using observations of different molecules (CO, H2CO, and others) shows systematic variations depending on the tracer used. These observed inconsistencies may arise from optical depth effects, chemical fractionation or isotope-selective photo-dissociation. Formed from C+ either via UV-driven or turbulence-driven chemistry, CH reflects the fractionation of C+, and does not show any significant fractionation effects unlike other molecules previously used to determine the 12C/13C isotopic ratio which make it an ideal tracer for the 12C/13C ratio throughout the Galaxy. Therefore, by comparing the derived column densities of 13CH with previously obtained SOFIA data of the corresponding transitions of the main isotopologue 12CH, we derive 12C/13C isotopic ratios toward Sgr B2(M), G34.26+0.15, W49(N) and W51E. Adding our values derived from 12/13CH to previous calculations of the Galactic isotopic gradient we derive a revised value of 12C/13C = 5.85(0.50)R_GC + 15.03(3.40).

We report the detection of emission in the v=1-0 P(1) (3.51629 micron) and P(2) (3.60776 micron) rovibrational lines of the helium hydride cation (HeH+) from the planetary nebula NGC 7027. These detections were obtained with the iSHELL spectrograph on NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) on Maunakea. The confirm the discovery of HeH+ reported recently by Guesten et al. (2019), who used the GREAT instrument on the SOFIA airborne observatory to observe its pure rotational J=1-0 transition at 149.137 micron. The flux measured for the HeH+ v=1-0 P(1) line is in good agreement with our model for the formation, destruction and excitation of HeH+ in NGC 7027. The measured strength of the J=1-0 pure rotational line, however, exceeds the model prediction significantly, as does that of the v=1-0 P(2) line, by factors of 2.9 and 2.3 respectively. Possible causes of these discrepancies are discussed. Our observations of NGC 7027, covering the 3.26 - 3.93 micron spectral region, have led to the detection of more than sixty spectral lines including nine rovibrational emissions from CH+. In this paper, we investigate the influence of hyperfine splitting on complex spectral lines, with the aim of evaluating canonical abundances by decomposing their dependence on hyperfine structures. This is achieved from first principles through deconvolution. We present high spectral resolution observations of the rotational ground state transitions of CH near 2 THz seen in absorption toward the strong FIR-continuum sources AGAL010.62$-$00.384, AGAL034.258+00.154, AGAL327.293$-$00.579, AGAL330.954$-$00.182, AGAL332.826$-$00.549, AGAL351.581$-$00.352 and SgrB2(M). These were observed with the GREAT instrument on board SOFIA. The observed line profiles of CH were deconvolved from the imprint left by the lines' hyperfine structures using the Wiener filter deconvolution, an optimised kernel acting on direct deconvolution. The quantitative analysis of the deconvolved spectra first entails the computation of CH column densities. Reliable N(CH) values are of importance owing to the status of CH as a powerful tracer for H$_2$ in the diffuse regions of the interstellar medium. The N(OH)/N(CH) column density ratio is found to vary within an order of magnitude with values ranging from one to 10, for the individual sources that are located outside the Galactic centre. Using CH as a surrogate for H$_2$, we determined the abundance of the OH molecule to be X(OH)=1.09$\times$10$^{-7}$ with respect to H$_2$. The radial distribution of CH column densities along the sightlines probed in this study, excluding SgrB2(M), showcase a dual peaked distribution peaking between 5 and 7 kpc. The similarity between the correspondingly derived column density profile of H$_2$ with that of the CO-dark H$_2$ gas traced by the cold neutral medium component of [CII] 158$~\mu$m emission across the Galactic plane, further emphasises the use of CH as a tracer for H$_2$.

During the dawn of chemistry when the temperature of the young Universe had fallen below $\sim$4000 K, the ions of the light elements produced in Big Bang nucleosynthesis recombined in reverse order of their ionization potential. With its higher ionization potentials, He$^{++}$ (54.5 eV) and He$^+$ (24.6 eV) combined first with free electrons to form the first neutral atom, prior to the recombination of hydrogen (13.6 eV). At that time, in this metal-free and low-density environment, neutral helium atoms formed the Universe's first molecular bond in the helium hydride ion HeH$^+$, by radiative association with protons (He + H$^+$ $\rightarrow$ HeH$^+$ + h$\nu$). As recombination progressed, the destruction of HeH$^+$ (HeH$^+$ + H $\rightarrow$ He + H$_2^+$) created a first path to the formation of molecular hydrogen, marking the beginning of the Molecular Age. Despite its unquestioned importance for the evolution of the early Universe, the HeH$^+$ molecule has so far escaped unequivocal detection in interstellar space. In the laboratory, the ion was discovered as long ago as 1925, but only in the late seventies was the possibility that HeH$^+$ might exist in local astrophysical plasmas discussed. In particular, the conditions in planetary nebulae were shown to be suitable for the production of potentially detectable HeH$^+$ column densities: the hard radiation field from the central hot white dwarf creates overlapping Str\"omgren spheres, where HeH$^+$ is predicted to form, primarily by radiative association of He$^+$ and H. With the GREAT spectrometer onboard SOFIA, the HeH$^+$ rotational ground-state transition at $\lambda$149.1 $\mu$m is now accessible. We present Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations in the CO J=3-2, SiO J=5-4 and 8-7, and SO 9_8-8_7 lines, as well as Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) observations in the CO J=6-5 line, of an extremely high-velocity and jet-like outflow in high-mass star-forming region HH 80--81. The outflow is known to contain two prominent molecular bullets, namely B1 and B2, discovered from our previous SMA CO J=2-1 observations. While B1 is detected in all the CO, SiO, and SO lines, B2 is only detected in CO lines. The CO 3-2/2-1 line ratio in B1 is clearly greater than that in B2. We perform a large velocity gradient analysis of the CO lines and derive a temperature of 70--210 K for B1 and 20--50 K for B2. Taking into account the differences in the velocity, distance from the central source, excitation conditions, and chemistry between the two bullets, we suggest that the bullets are better explained by direct ejections from the innermost vicinity of the central high-mass protostar, and that we are more likely observing the molecular component of a primary wind rather than entrained or swept-up material from the ambient cloud. These findings further support our previous suggestions that the molecular bullets indicate an episodic, disk-mediated accretion in the high-mass star formation process., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

We present ALMA maps of the starless molecular cloud core Ophiuchus/H-MM1 in the lines of deuterated ammonia (ortho-NH2D), methanol (CH3OH), and sulphur monoxide (SO). The dense core is seen in NH2D emission, whereas the CH3OH and SO distributions form a halo surrounding the core. Because methanol is formed on grain surfaces, its emission highlights regions where desorption from grains is particularly efficient. Methanol and sulphur monoxide are most abundant in a narrow zone that follows the eastern side of the core. This side is sheltered from the stronger external radiation field coming from the west. We show that photodissociation on the illuminated side can give rise to an asymmetric methanol distribution, but that the stark contrast observed in H-MM1 is hard to explain without assuming enhanced desorption on the shaded side. The region of the brightest emission has a wavy structure that rolls up at one end. This is the signature of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability occurring in sheared flows. We suggest that in this zone, methanol and sulphur are released as a result of grain-grain collisions induced by shear vorticity., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

High-mass stars are formed within massive molecular clumps, where a large number of stars form close together. The evolution of the clumps with different masses and luminosities is mainly regulated by its high-mass stellar content and the formation of such objects is still not well understood. In this work, we characterise the mid-J CO emission in a statistical sample of 99 clumps (Top100) selected from the ATLASGAL survey that are representative of the Galactic proto-cluster population. High-spatial resolution APEX-CHAMP+ maps of the CO(6-5) and CO(7-6) transitions were obtained and combined with additional single-pointing APEX-FLASH+ spectra of the CO(4-3) line. We study the correlations of the CO line luminosities and profiles for the three CO transitions with the clump properties and investigate if and how they change as a function of the evolution. All sources were detected above 3-$\sigma$ in all three CO transitions and most of the sources exhibit broad CO emission likely associated with molecular outflows. We found that the extension of the mid-J CO emission is correlated with the size of the dust emission traced by the Herschel-PACS 70 $\mu$m maps. The CO line luminosity is correlated with the luminosity and mass of the clumps. However, it does not correlate with the L/M ratio. The dependency of the CO luminosity with the properties of the clumps is steeper for higher-J transitions. Our data seem to exclude that this trend is biased by self-absorption features in the CO emission, but rather suggest that different J transitions arise from different regions of the inner envelope. Moreover, high-mass clumps show similar trends in CO luminosity as lower mass clumps, but are systematically offset towards larger values, suggesting that higher column density and/or temperature (of unresolved) CO emitters are found inside high-mass clumps., Comment: Accepted by A&A: 62 pages, 230 figures. Stretching a length reaching 10 pc projected in the plane of sky, the radio jet associated with Herbig-Haro objects 80 and 81 (HH 80-81) is known as the largest and best collimated protostellar jet in our Galaxy. The nature of the molecular outflow associated with this extraordinary jet remains an unsolved question which is of great interests to our understanding of the relationship between jets and outflows in high-mass star formation. Here we present Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment CO(6-5) and (7-6), James Clerk Maxwell Telescope CO(3-2), Caltech Submillimeter Observatory CO(2-1), and Submillimeter Array CO and $^{13}$CO(2-1) mapping observations of the outflow. We report on the detection of a two-component outflow consisting of a collimated component along the jet path and a wide-angle component with an opening angle of about $30^{\circ}$. The gas velocity structure suggests that each of the two components traces part of a primary wind. From LVG calculations of the CO lines, the outflowing gas has a temperature around 88 K, indicating that the gas is being heated by shocks. Based on the CO(6-5) data, the outflow mass is estimated to be a few $M_{\odot}$, which is dominated by the wide-angle component. A comparison between the HH 80-81 outflow and other well shaped massive outflows suggests that the opening angle of massive outflows continues to increase over time. Therefore, the mass loss process in the formation of early-B stars seems to be similar to that in low-mass star formation, except that a jet component would disappear as the central source evolves to an ultracompact HII region., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

The aim of our study is to investigate the physical properties of the star-forming interstellar medium (ISM) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by separating the origin of the emission lines spatially and spectrally. Following Okada et al. (2015, Paper I), we investigate different phases of the ISM traced by carbon-bearing species in four star-forming regions in the LMC, and model the physical properties using the KOSMA-tau PDR model. We mapped 3--13 arcmin$^2$ areas in 30 Dor, N158, N160 and N159 along the molecular ridge of the LMC in [CII]158um with GREAT on board SOFIA, and in CO(2-1) to (6-5), $^{13}$CO(2-1) and (3-2), [CI]3P1-3P0 and 3P2-3P1 with APEX. In all four star-forming regions, the line profiles of CO, $^{13}$CO, and [CI] emission are similar, whereas [CII] typically shows wider line profiles or an additional velocity component. For selected positions in N159 and 30 Dor, we observed the velocity-resolved [OI] 145um and 63um lines for the first time with upGREAT. At some positions, the [OI] line profiles match those of CO, at other positions they are more similar to the [CII] profiles. We interpret the different line profiles of CO, [CII] and [OI] as contributions from spatially separated clouds and/or clouds in different physical phases, which give different line ratios depending on their physical properties. We model the emission from the CO, [CI], [CII], and [OI] lines and the far-infrared continuum emission using the latest KOSMA-tau PDR model, which treats the dust-related physics consistently and computes the dust continuum SED together with the line emission of the chemical species. We find that the line and continuum emissions are not well-reproduced by a single clump ensemble. Toward the CO peak at N159~W, we propose a scenario that the CO, [CII], and [OI] 63um emission are weaker than expected because of mutual shielding among clumps. We present Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) observations toward the massive star-forming region G240.31+0.07 in the CO J = 3--2, 6--5, and 7--6 lines. We detect a parsec-sized, bipolar, and high velocity outflow in all the lines, which allow us, in combination with the existing CO J = 2--1 data, to perform a multi-line analysis of physical conditions of the outflowing gas. The CO 7--6/6--5, 6--5/3--2, and 6--5/2--1 ratios are found to be nearly constant over a velocity range of $\sim$5--25 km s$^{-1}$ for both blueshifted and redshifted lobes. We carry out rotation diagram and large velocity gradient (LVG) calculations of the four lines, and find that the outflow is approximately isothermal with a gas temperature of $\sim$50 K, and that the the CO column density clearly decreases with the outflow velocity. If the CO abundance and the velocity gradient do not vary much, the decreasing CO column density indicates a decline in the outflow gas density with velocity. By comparing with theoretical models of outflow driving mechanisms, our observations and calculations suggest that the massive outflow in G240.31+0.07 is being driven by a wide-angle wind and further support a disk mediated accretion at play for the formation of the central high-mass star., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

The methylidyne radical CH is commonly used as a proxy for H$_2$ in the cold, neutral phase of the interstellar medium. The optical spectroscopy of CH is limited by interstellar extinction, whereas far-infrared observations provide an integral view through the Galaxy. While the HF ground state absorption, another H$_2$ proxy in diffuse gas, frequently suffers from saturation, CH remains transparent both in spiral-arm crossings and high-mass star forming regions, turning this light hydride into a universal surrogate for H$_2$. However, in slow shocks and in regions dissipating turbulence its abundance is expected to be enhanced by an endothermic production path, and the idea of a "canonical" CH abundance needs to be addressed. The $N=2\leftarrow 1$ ground state transition of CH at $\lambda 149\,\mu$m has become accessible to high-resolution spectroscopy thanks to GREAT aboard SOFIA. Its unsaturated absorption and the absence of emission makes it an ideal candidate for the determination of column densities with a minimum of assumptions. Here we present an analysis of four sightlines towards distant, far-infrared bright Galactic star forming regions. If combined with the sub-millimeter line of CH at $\lambda 560\,\mu$m, environments forming massive stars can be analyzed. For this we present a case study on the "proto-Trapezium" cluster W3 IRS5, and demonstrate that the sub-millimeter/far-infrared lines of CH reliably trace not only diffuse but also dense, molecular gas. While we confirm the global correlation between the column densities of HF and those of CH, clear signposts of an over-abundance of CH are observed towards lower densities. A quiescent ion-neutral chemistry alone cannot account for this over-abundance. We detect bright emission in the far infrared fine structure [O III] 88$\mu$m line from a strong lensing candidate galaxy, H-ATLAS J113526.3-014605, hereafter G12v2.43, at z=3.127, using the $\rm 2^{nd}$ generation Redshift (z) and Early Universe Spectrometer (ZEUS-2) at the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment Telescope (APEX). This is only the fifth detection of this far-IR line from a sub-millimeter galaxy at the epoch of galaxy assembly. The observed [O III] luminosity of $7.1\times10^{9}\,\rm(\frac{10}{\mu})\,\rm{L_{\odot}}\,$ likely arises from HII regions around massive stars, and the amount of Lyman continuum photons required to support the ionization indicate the presence of $(1.2-5.2)\times10^{6}\,\rm(\frac{10}{\mu})$ equivalent O5.5 or higher stars; where $\mu$ would be the lensing magnification factor. The observed line luminosity also requires a minimum mass of $\sim 2\times 10^{8}\,\rm(\frac{10}{\mu})\,\rm{M_{\odot}}\,$ in ionized gas, that is $0.33\%$ of the estimated total molecular gas mass of $6\times10^{10}\,\rm(\frac{10}{\mu})\,\rm{M_{\odot}}\,$. We compile multi-band photometry tracing rest-frame UV to millimeter continuum emission to further constrain the properties of this dusty high redshift star-forming galaxy. Via SED modeling we find G12v2.43 is forming stars at a rate of 916 $\rm(\frac{10}{\mu})\,\rm{M_{\odot}}\,\rm{yr^{-1}}$ and already has a stellar mass of $8\times 10^{10}\,\rm(\frac{10}{\mu})\,\rm{M_{\odot}}\,$. We also constrain the age of the current starburst to be $\leqslant$ 5 million years, making G12v2.43 a gas rich galaxy lying above the star-forming main sequence at z$\sim$3, undergoing a growth spurt and, could be on the main sequence within the derived gas depletion timescale of $\sim$66 million years., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present SOFIA-upGREAT observations of [CII] emission of Infrared Dark Cloud (IRDC) G035.39-00.33, designed to trace its atomic gas envelope and thus test models of the origins of such clouds. Several velocity components of [CII] emission are detected, tracing structures that are at a wide range of distances in the Galactic plane. We find a main component that is likely associated with the IRDC and its immediate surroundings. This strongest emission component has a velocity similar to that of the $^{13}$CO(2-1) emission of the IRDC, but offset by $\sim3\:{\rm km\:s}^{-1}$ and with a larger velocity width of $\sim9\:{\rm km\:s}^{-1}$. The spatial distribution of the [CII] emission of this component is also offset predominantly to one side of the dense filamentary structure of the IRDC. The CII column density is estimated to be of the order of $\sim10^{17}-10^{18}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$. We compare these results to the [CII] emission from numerical simulations of magnetized, dense gas filaments formed from giant molecular cloud (GMC) collisions, finding similar spatial and kinematic offsets. These observations and modeling of [CII] add further to the evidence that IRDC G035.39-00.33 has been formed by a process of GMC-GMC collision, which may thus be an important mechanism for initiating star cluster formation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRAS Letters

We report the discovery of water maser emission at frequencies above 1 THz. Using the GREAT instrument on SOFIA, we have detected emission in the 1.296411 THz 8(27)-7(34) transition of water toward three oxygen-rich evolved stars: W Hya, U Her, and VY CMa. An upper limit on the 1.296 THz line flux was obtained toward R Aql. Near-simultaneous observations of the 22.23508 GHz 6(16)-5(23) water maser transition were carried out towards all four sources using the Effelsberg 100m telescope. The measured line fluxes imply 22 GHz / 1.296 THz photon luminosity ratios of 0.012, 0.12, and 0.83 respectively for W Hya, U Her, and VY CMa, values that confirm the 22 GHz maser transition to be unsaturated in W Hya and U Her. We also detected the 1.884888 THz 8(45)-7(53) transition toward W Hya and VY CMa, and the 1.278266 THz 7(43)-6(52) transition toward VY CMa. Like the 22 GHz maser transition, all three of the THz emission lines detected here originate from the ortho-H2O spin isomer. Based upon a model for the circumstellar envelope of W Hya, we estimate that stimulated emission is responsible for ~ 85% of the observed 1.296 THz line emission, and thus that this transition may be properly described as a terahertz-frequency maser. In the case of the 1.885 THz transition, by contrast, our W Hya model indicates that the observed emission is dominated by spontaneous radiative decay, even though a population inversion exists., Comment: Accepted for oublication in ApJ

(Abridged) We present Herschel/HIFI spectra of the H2O 1113 GHz and H2O+ 1115 GHz lines toward five nearby prototypical starburst/AGN systems, and OH+ 971 GHz spectra toward three of these. The beam size of 20" corresponds to resolutions between 0.35 and 7 kpc. The observed line profiles range from pure absorption (NGC 4945, M82) to P-Cygni indicating outflow (NGC 253, Arp 220) and inverse P-Cygni indicating infall (Cen A). The similarity of the H2O, OH+, and H2O+ profiles to each other and to HI indicates that diffuse and dense gas phases are well mixed. We estimate column densities assuming negligible excitation (for absorption features) and using a non-LTE model (for emission features), adopting calculated collision data for H2O and OH+, and rough estimates for H2O+. Column densities range from ~10^13 to ~10^15 cm^-2 for each species, and are similar between absorption and emission components, indicating that the nuclear region does not contribute much to the emission in these ground-state lines. The N(H2O)/N(H2O+) ratios of 1.4-5.6 indicate an origin of the lines in diffuse gas, and the N(OH+)/N(H2O+) ratios of 1.6-3.1 indicate a low H2 fraction (~11%) in the gas. Adopting recent Galactic values for the average gas density and the ionization efficiency, we find ionization rates for our sample galaxies of ~3x10^-16 s^-1 which are similar to the value for the Galactic disk, but ~10x below that of the Galactic Center and ~100x below estimates for AGN from excited-state H3O+ lines. We conclude that the ground-state lines of water and its associated ions probe primarily non-nuclear gas in the disks of these centrally active galaxies. Ammonia and its deuterated isotopologues probe physical conditions in dense molecular cloud cores. With the aim of testing the current understanding of the spin-state chemistry of these molecules, we observed spectral lines of NH3, NH2D, NHD2, ND3, and N2D+ towards a dense, starless core in Ophiuchus with the APEX, GBT, and IRAM 30-m telescopes. The observations were interpreted using a gas-grain chemistry model combined with radiative transfer calculations. The chemistry model distinguishes between the different nuclear spin states of light hydrogen molecules, ammonia, and their deuterated forms. High deuterium fractionation ratios with NH2D/NH3=0.4, NHD2/NH2D=0.2, and ND3/NHD2=0.06 were found in the core. The observed ortho/para ratios of NH2D and NHD2 are close to the corresponding nuclear spin statistical weights. The chemistry model can approximately reproduce the observed abundances, but predicts uniformly too low ortho/para-NH2D, and too large ortho/para-NHD2 ratios. The longevity of N2H+ and NH3 in dense gas, which is prerequisite to their strong deuteration, can be attributed to the chemical inertia of N2 on grain surfaces. The discrepancies between the chemistry model and the observations are likely to be caused by the fact that the model assumes complete scrambling in principal gas-phase deuteration reactions of ammonia, which means that all the nuclei are mixed in reactive collisions. If, instead, these reactions occur through proton hop/hydrogen abstraction processes, statistical spin ratios are to be expected. EX Lupi-type objects (EXors) form a sub-class of T Tauri stars, defined by sudden sporadic flare-ups of 1-5 magnitudes at optical wavelengths. These eruptions are attributed to enhanced mass accretion from the circumstellar disk to the star, and may constitute important events in shaping the structure of the inner disk and the forming planetary system. Although disk properties must play a fundamental role in driving the outbursts, they are surprisingly poorly known. In order to characterize the dust and gas components of EXor disks, here we report on observations of the $^{12}$CO J=3-2 and 4-3 lines, and the $^{13}$CO 3-2 line in EX Lup, the prototype of the EXor class. We present the upGREAT THz heterodyne arrays for far-infrared astronomy. The Low Frequency Array (LFA) is designed to cover the 1.9-2.5 THz range using 2x7-pixel waveguide-based HEB mixer arrays in a dual polarization configuration. The High Frequency Array (HFA) will perform observations of the [OI] line at ~4.745 THz using a 7-pixel waveguide-based HEB mixer array. This paper describes the common design for both arrays, cooled to 4.5 K using closed- cycle pulse tube technology. We then show the laboratory and telescope characterization of the first array with its 14 pixels (LFA), which culminated in the successful commissioning in May 2015 aboard the SOFIA airborne observatory observing the [CII] fine structure transition at 1.905 THz. This is the first successful demonstration of astronomical observations with a heterodyne focal plane array above 1 THz and is also the first time high- power closed-cycle coolers for temperatures below 4.5 K are operated on an airborne platform., Comment: accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology

The Galactic center is the closest region in which we can study star formation under extreme physical conditions like those in high-redshift galaxies. We measure the temperature of the dense gas in the central molecular zone (CMZ) and examine what drives it. We mapped the inner 300 pc of the CMZ in the temperature-sensitive J = 3-2 para-formaldehyde (p-H$_2$CO) transitions. We used the $3_{2,1} - 2_{2,0} / 3_{0,3} - 2_{0,2}$ line ratio to determine the gas temperature in $n \sim 10^4 - 10^5 $cm$^{-3}$ gas. We have produced temperature maps and cubes with 30" and 1 km/s resolution and published all data in FITS form. Dense gas temperatures in the Galactic center range from ~60 K to > 100 K in selected regions. The highest gas temperatures T_G > 100 K are observed around the Sgr B2 cores, in the extended Sgr B2 cloud, the 20 km/s and 50 km/s clouds, and in "The Brick" (G0.253+0.016). We infer an upper limit on the cosmic ray ionization rate ${\zeta}_{CR} < 10^{-14}$ 1/s. The dense molecular gas temperature of the region around our Galactic center is similar to values found in the central regions of other galaxies, in particular starburst systems. The gas temperature is uniformly higher than the dust temperature, confirming that dust is a coolant in the dense gas. Turbulent heating can readily explain the observed temperatures given the observed line widths. Cosmic rays cannot explain the observed variation in gas temperatures, so CMZ dense gas temperatures are not dominated by cosmic ray heating. The gas temperatures previously observed to be high in the inner ~75 pc are confirmed to be high in the entire CMZ., Comment: Accepted to A&A. We try to understand the gas heating and cooling in the S 140 star forming region by spatially and spectrally resolving the distribution of the main cooling lines with GREAT/SOFIA. We mapped the fine structure lines of [OI] (63 {\mu}m) and [CII] (158 {\mu}m) and the rotational transitions of CO 13-12 and 16-15 with GREAT/SOFIA and analyzed the spatial and velocity structure to assign the emission to individual heating sources. We measure the optical depth of the [CII] line and perform radiative transfer computations for all observed transitions. By comparing the line intensities with the far-infrared continuum we can assess the total cooling budget and measure the gas heating efficiency. The main emission of fine structure lines in S 140 stems from a 8.3'' region close to the infrared source IRS 2 that is not prominent at any other wavelength. It can be explained by a photon-dominated region (PDR) structure around the embedded cluster if we assume that the [OI] line intensity is reduced by a factor seven due to self-absorption. The external cloud interface forms a second PDR at an inclination of 80-85 degrees illuminated by an UV field of 60 times the standard interstellar radiation field. The main radiation source in the cloud, IRS 1, is not prominent at all in the fine structure lines. We measure line-to-continuum cooling ratios below 10^(-4), i.e. values lower than in any other Galactic source, rather matching the far-IR line deficit seen in ULIRGs. In particular the low intensity of the [CII] line can only be modeled by an extreme excitation gradient in the gas around IRS 1. We found no explanation why IRS 1 shows no associated fine-structure line peak, while IRS 2 does. The inner part of S 140 mimics the far-IR line deficit in ULIRGs thereby providing a template that may lead to a future model., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The [CII]158um line is one of the dominant cooling lines in star-forming active regions. The commonly assumed clumpy UV-penetrated cloud models predict a [CII] line profile similar to that of CO. However, recent spectral-resolved observations show that they are often very different, indicating a more complex origin of the line emission including the dynamics of the source region. The aim of our study is to investigate the physical properties of the star-forming ISM in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by separating the origin of the emission lines spatially and spectrally. In this paper, we focus on the spectral characteristics and the origin of the emission lines, and the phases of carbon-bearing species in the N159 star-forming region in the LMC. We mapped a 4'x(3-4)' region in N159 in [CII]158um and [NII]205um with the GREAT on board SOFIA, and in CO(3-2), (4-3), (6-5), 13CO(3-2), and [CI]3P1-3P0 and 3P2-3P1 with APEX. The emission of all transitions observed shows a large variation in the line profiles across the map and between the different species. At most positions the [CII] emission line profile is substantially wider than that of CO and [CI]. We estimated the fraction of the [CII] integrated line emission that cannot be fitted by the CO line profile to be 20%-50%. We derived the relative contribution from C+, C, and CO to the column density in each velocity bin. The contribution from C+ dominates the velocity range far from the velocities traced by the dense molecular gas, and the region located between the CO cores of N159 W and E. We estimate the contribution of the ionized gas to the [CII] emission using the ratio to the [NII] emission to be < 19% to the [CII] emission at its peak position, and <15% over the whole observed region. Supernova remnants (SNRs) are considered as being the sources of galactic cosmic rays. In order to understand the origin, acceleration, and composition of these cosmic rays, detailed knowledge of the physical conditions in the local interstellar medium is needed. The shock interaction of SNRs with molecular clouds that gives rise to strong molecular emission in the far-IR and sub-mm wavelength regimes can be used as a highly valuable tracer of these conditions. The application of MHD shock models in the interpretation of the resulting line emission can yield information on the energetic and chemical impact of supernova remnants. We have mapped two regions in the supernova remnant W44 with the APEX telescope in ${}^{12}$CO (3-2), (4-3), (6-5), (7-6) and ${}^{13}$CO (3-2). The extraction of integrated intensities on five different positions, corresponding to local maxima of CO emission, allows to compare these intensities to the outputs of a grid of models, which combine an MHD shock code with a radiative transfer module based on the 'large velocity gradient' approximation. We find that the observed CO line emission is compatible with non-stationary shocks and a pre-shock density of $10^4$ cm${}^{-3}$. Our models furthermore allow to constrain shock ages, velocities, the pre-shock magnetic field strength components perpendicular to the line-of-sight, and the full ladder of CO transitions. Finally, our analysis can be used to estimate the contribution of such SNRs to, e.g. the galactic energy balance and the momentum-injection into the surrounding interstellar medium., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. During the formation of a star, material is ejected along powerful jets that impact the ambient material. This outflow regulates star formation by e.g. inducing turbulence and heating the surrounding gas. Understanding the associated shocks is therefore essential to the study of star formation. We present comparisons of shock models with CO, H2, and SiO observations in a 'pure' shock position in the BHR71 bipolar outflow. These comparisons provide an insight into the shock and pre-shock characteristics, and allow us to understand the energetic and chemical feedback of star formation on Galactic scales. New CO (Jup = 16, 11, 7, 6, 4, 3) observations from the shocked regions with the SOFIA and APEX telescopes are presented and combined with earlier H2 and SiO data (from the Spitzer and APEX telescopes). The integrated intensities are compared to a grid of models that were obtained from a magneto-hydrodynamical shock code which calculates the dynamical and chemical structure of these regions combined with a radiative transfer module based on the 'large velocity gradient' approximation. The CO emission leads us to update the conclusions of our previous shock analysis: pre-shock densities of 1e4 cm-3 and shock velocities around 20-25 km s-1 are still constrained, but older ages are inferred ( 4000 years). We evaluate the contribution of shocks to the excitation of CO around forming stars. The SiO observations are compatible with a scenario where less than 4% of the pre-shock SiO belongs to the grain mantles. We infer outflow parameters: a mass of 1.8x1e-2 Msun was measured in our beam, in which a momentum of 0.4 Msun km s-1 is dissipated, for an energy of 4.2x1e43erg. We analyse the energetics of the outflow species by species. During the embedded stage of star formation, bipolar molecular outflows and UV radiation from the protostar are important feedback processes. Our aim is to quantify the feedback, mechanical and radiative, for a large sample of low-mass sources. The outflow activity is compared to radiative feedback in the form of UV heating by the accreting protostar to search for correlations and evolutionary trends. Large-scale maps of 26 young stellar objects, which are part of the Herschel WISH key program are obtained using the CHAMP+ instrument on the APEX (12CO and 13CO 6-5), and the HARP-B instrument on the JCMT (12CO and 13CO 3-2). Maps are used to determine outflow parameters and envelope models are used to quantify the amount of UV-heated gas and its temperature from 13CO 6-5 observations. All sources in our sample show outflow activity and the outflow force, F_CO, is larger for Class 0 sources than for Class I sources, even if their luminosities are comparable. The outflowing gas typically extends to much greater distances than the power-law envelope and therefore influences the surrounding cloud material directly. Comparison of the CO 6-5 results with Herschel-HIFI H2O and PACS high-J CO lines, both tracing currently shocked gas, shows that the two components are linked, even though the transitions do not probe the same gas. The link does not extend down to CO 3-2. The conclusion is that CO 6-5 depends on the shock characteristics (density and velocity), whereas CO 3-2 is more sensitive to conditions in the surrounding environment (density). The radiative feedback is responsible for increasing the gas temperature by a factor of two, up to 30-50 K, on scales of a few thousand AU, particularly along the direction of the outflow. The mass of the UV heated gas exceeds the mass contained in the entrained outflow in the inner ~3000 AU and is therefore at least as important on small scales., Comment: 30 pages with Appendix, Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

Imaging polarimetry is an important tool for the study of cosmic magnetic fields. In our Galaxy, polarization levels of a few up to $\sim$10\% are measured in the submillimeter dust emission from molecular clouds and in the synchrotron emission from supernova remnants. Only few techniques exist to image the distribution of polarization angles, as a means of tracing the plane-of-sky projection of the magnetic field orientation. At submillimeter wavelengths, polarization is either measured as the differential total power of polarization-sensitive bolometer elements, or by modulating the polarization of the signal. Bolometer arrays such as LABOCA at the APEX telescope are used to observe the continuum emission from fields as large as $\sim0\fdg2$ in diameter. %Here we present the results from the commissioning of PolKa, a polarimeter for Here we present PolKa, a polarimeter for LABOCA with a reflection-type waveplate of at least 90\% efficiency. The modulation efficiency depends mainly on the sampling and on the angular velocity of the waveplate. For the data analysis the concept of generalized synchronous demodulation is introduced. The instrumental polarization towards a point source is at the level of $\sim0.1$\%, increasing to a few percent at the $-10$db contour of the main beam. A method to correct for its effect in observations of extended sources is presented. Our map of the polarized synchrotron emission from the Crab nebula is in agreement with structures observed at radio and optical wavelengths. The linear polarization measured in OMC1 agrees with results from previous studies, while the high sensitivity of LABOCA enables us to also map the polarized emission of the Orion Bar, a prototypical photon-dominated region.

We report mapping observations of the $^{12}$CO $J=3-2$, $4-3$, $6-5$, and $7-6$ transitions and the CI 492 GHz transition toward the central 40$''\times$40$''$ region of the Circinus galaxy, using the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope. We also detected $^{13}$CO $J=3-2$ at the central position of Circinus. These observations are to date the highest CO transitions reported in Circinus. With large velocity gradient (LVG) modeling and likelihood analysis we try to obtain density, temperature, and column density of the molecular gas in three regions: the nuclear region ($D< 18''\sim$ 360 pc), the entire central 45$''$ ($D<45''\sim$ 900pc) region, and the star-forming (S-F) ring (18$''

Supernovae constitute a critical source of energy input to the interstellar medium (ISM). In this short review, we focus on their latest phase of evolution, the supernova remnants (SNRs). We present observations of three old SNRs that have reached the phase where they interact with the ambient ISM: W28, IC443, and 3C391. We show that such objects make up clean laboratories to constrain the physical and chemical processes at work in molecular shock environments. Our studies subsequently allow us to quantify the impact of SNRs on their environment in terms of mass, momentum, and energy dissipation. In turn, their contribution to the energy balance of galaxies can be assessed. Their potential to trigger a further generation of star formation can also be investigated. We report HCN J=4-3, HCO+ J=4-3, and CS J=7-6 observations in 20 nearby star-forming galaxies with the Acatama Pathfinder EXperiment 12-m telescope. Combined with 4 HCN, 3 HCO+, and 4 CS detections in literature, we probe the empirical link between the luminosity of molecular gas (L_gas) and that of infrared emission (L_IR), up to the highest gas densities (10^6 - 10^8 cm-3) that have been probed so far. For nearby galaxies with large radii, we measure the IR luminosity within the submm beam-size (14"-18") to match the molecular emission. We find linear slopes for L_CS76-L_IR and L_HCN43-L_IR, and a slightly super-linear slope for L_HCO+43-L_IR. The correlation of L_CS76-L_IR even extends over eight orders of luminosity magnitude down to Galactic dense cores, with a fit of log(L_IR)=1.00(\pm 0.01) \times log(L_CS76) + 4.03(\pm 0.04). Such linear correlations appear to hold for all densities >10^4 cm-3, and indicate that star formation rate is not related to free-fall time scale for dense molecular gas., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. We have investigated the water abundance in shock-heated molecular gas, making use of $Herschel$ measurements of far-infrared CO and H$_2$O line emissions in combination with $Spitzer$ measurements of mid-IR H$_2$ rotational emissions. We present far-infrared line spectra obtained with $Herschel$'s PACS instrument in range spectroscopy mode towards two positions in the protostellar outflow NGC 2071 and one position each in the supernova remnants W28 and 3C391. These spectra provide unequivocal detections, at one or more positions, of 12 rotational lines of water, 14 rotational lines of CO, 8 rotational lines of OH (4 lambda doublets), and 7 fine-structure transitions of atoms or atomic ions. We first used a simultaneous fit to the CO line fluxes, along with H$_2$ rotational line fluxes measured previously by $Spitzer$, to constrain the temperature and density distribution within the emitting gas; and we then investigated the water abundances implied by the observed H$_2$O line fluxes. The water line fluxes are in acceptable agreement with standard theoretical models for nondissociative shocks that predict the complete vaporization of grain mantles in shocks of velocity $v \sim 25$ km/s, behind which the characteristic gas temperature is $\sim 1300$ K and the H$_2$O/CO ratio is 1.2, Comment: 42 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Within a few parsecs around the central Black Hole Sgr A*, chemistry in the dense molecular cloud material of the circumnuclear disk (CND) can be affected by many energetic phenomena such as high UV-flux from the massive central star cluster, X-rays from Sgr A*, shock waves, and an enhanced cosmic-ray flux. Recently, spectroscopic surveys with the IRAM 30 meter and the APEX 12 meter telescopes of substantial parts of the 80--500 GHz frequency range were made toward selected positions in and near the CND. These datasets contain lines from the molecules HCN, HCO$^+$, HNC, CS, SO, SiO, CN, H$_2$CO, HC$_3$N, N$_2$H$^+$, H$_3$O$^+$ and others. We conduct Large Velocity Gradient analyses to obtain column densities and total hydrogen densities, $n$, for each species in molecular clouds located in the southwest lobe of CND. The data for the above mentioned molecules indicate 10$^5\,$cm$^{-3} \lesssim n <10^6\,$cm$^{-3}$, which shows that the CND is tidally unstable. The derived chemical composition is compared with a chemical model calculated using the UCL\_CHEM code that includes gas and grain reactions, and the effects of shock waves. Models are run for varying shock velocities, cosmic-ray ionization rates, and number densities. The resulting chemical composition is fitted best to an extremely high value of cosmic-ray ionization rate $\zeta \sim 10^{-14}\,$s$^{-1}$, 3 orders of magnitude higher than the value in regular Galactic molecular clouds, if the pre-shock density is $n=10^5\,$cm$^{-3}$., Comment: 4 pages, Conference proceedings for IAU Symposium 303 The Galactic Center

We report first science results from our new spectrometer, the 2nd generation z(Redshift) and Early Universe Spectrometer (ZEUS-2), recently commissioned on the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment telescope (APEX). ZEUS-2 is a submillimeter grating spectrometer optimized for detecting the faint and broad lines from distant galaxies that are redshifted into the telluric windows from 200 to 850 microns. It utilizes a focal plane array of transition-edge sensed bolometers, the first use of these arrays for astrophysical spectroscopy. ZEUS-2 promises to be an important tool for studying galaxies in the years to come due to its synergy with ALMA and its capabilities in the short submillimeter windows that are unique in the post Herschel era. Here we report on our first detection of the [CII] 158 $\mu m$ line with ZEUS-2. We detect the line at z ~ 1.8 from H-ATLAS J091043.1-000322 with a line flux of $(6.44 \pm 0.42) \times 10^{-18} W m^{-2}$. Combined with its far-infrared luminosity and a new Herschel-PACS detection of the [OI] 63 $\mu m $ line we model the line emission as coming from a photo-dissociation region with far-ultraviolet radiation field, $G \approx 2 \times 10^{4} G_{0}$, gas density, $n \approx 1 \times 10^{3} cm^{-3}$ and size between ~ 0.4 and 1 kpc. Based on this model, we conclude that H-ATLAS J091043.1-000322 is a high redshift analogue of a local ultra-luminous infrared galaxy, i.e. it is likely the site of a compact starburst due to a major merger.
