We analyse the spatial distribution and vertical stratification of the physical parameters of the solar atmosphere when an X-class flare occurs. We made use of observations acquired by the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectropolarimeter instrument when observing the full Stokes parameters for the Fe I 6173 A and Ca II 8542 A transitions. We analysed the observed spectra using the newly developed DeSIRe code to infer the atmospheric parameters at photospheric and chromospheric layers over the entire observed field of view. Our findings reveal that the chromosphere is characterised by temperature enhancements and strong upflows in the flare ribbon area, which indicates that the flaring event is producing hot material that is moving outwards from the Sun. We did not detect any trace of temperature enhancements or strong velocities (of any sign) at photospheric layers, signalling that the impact of the flaring event mainly happens at the middle and upper layers. The information about the magnetic field vector revealed relatively smooth stratifications with height for both magnetic field strength and inclination. Still, when examining the spatial distribution of the magnetic field inclination, we observed the presence of large-scale mixed polarities in the regions where the flare ribbon is located. One of the most important objectives of solar physics is the physical understanding of the solar atmosphere, the structure of which is also described in terms of the density (N) and temperature (T) distributions of the atmospheric matter. Several multi-frequency analyses show that the characteristics of these distributions are still debated, especially for the outer coronal emission. We aim to constrain the T and N distributions of the solar atmosphere through observations in the centimetric radio domain. We employ single-dish observations from two of the INAF radio telescopes at the K-band frequencies (18 - 26 GHz). We investigate the origin of the significant brightness temperature ($T_B$) level that we detected up to the upper corona ($\sim 800$ Mm of altitude with respect to the photospheric solar surface). To probe the physical origin of the atmospheric emission and to constrain instrumental biases, we reproduced the solar signal by convolving specific 2D antenna beam models. The analysis of the solar atmosphere is performed by adopting a physical model that assumes the thermal bremsstrahlung as the emission mechanism, with specific T and N distributions. The modelled $T_B$ profiles are compared with those observed by averaging solar maps obtained during the minimum of solar activity (2018 - 2020). The T and N distributions are compatible (within $25\%$ of uncertainty) with the model up to $\sim 60$ Mm and $\sim 100$ Mm of altitude, respectively. The analysis of the role of the antenna beam pattern on our solar maps proves the physical nature of the atmospheric emission in our images up to the coronal tails seen in our $T_B$ profiles. The Sun is an extraordinary workbench, from which several fundamental astronomical parameters can be measured with high precision. Among these parameters, the solar radius $R_{\odot}$ plays an important role in several aspects, such as in evolutionary models. Despite the efforts in obtaining accurate measurements of $R_{\odot}$, the subject is still debated and measurements are puzzling and/or lacking in many frequency ranges. We aimed to determine the mean, equatorial, and polar radii of the Sun ($R_c$, $R_{eq}$, and $R_{pol}$) in the frequency range 18.1 - 26.1 GHz. We employed single-dish observations from the newly-appointed Medicina "Gavril Grueff" Radio Telescope and the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) throughout 5 years, from 2018 to mid-2023, in the framework of the SunDish project for solar monitoring. Two methods to calculate the radius at radio frequencies are considered and compared. To assess the quality of our radius determinations, we also analysed the possible degrading effects of the antenna beam pattern on our solar maps, using two 2D-models. We carried out a correlation analysis with the evolution of the solar cycle through the calculation of Pearson's correlation coefficient $\rho$. We obtained several values for the solar radius - ranging between 959 and 994 arcsec - and $\rho$, with typical errors of a few arcsec. Our $R_{\odot}$ measurements, consistent with values reported in literature, suggest a weak prolatness of the solar limb ($R_{eq}$ > $R_{pol}$), although $R_{eq}$ and $R_{pol}$ are statistically compatible within 3$\sigma$ errors. The correlation analysis using the solar images from Grueff shows (1) a positive correlation between the solar activity and the temporal variation of $R_c$ (and $R_{eq}$) at all observing frequencies, and (2) a weak anti-correlation between the temporal variation of $R_{pol}$ and the solar activity at 25.8 GHz., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 6 tables, accepted by A&A; v1

Metis, the coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter, provides for the first time coronagraphic imaging in the ultraviolet HI Ly-alpha line and, simultaneously, in polarized visible light, thus providing a host of information on the properties of CMEs and solar eruptions like their overall dynamics, time evolution, mass content, and outflow propagation velocity in the expanding corona. We analyzed in this work six CMEs observed by Metis between April and October 2021, which are characterized by a very strong HI Ly-alpha emission. We studied in particular the morphology, kinematics, and the temporal and radial evolution of the emission of such events, focusing on the brightest UV features. The kinematics of the eruptive events under consideration were studied by determining the height-time profiles of the brightest parts on the Metis plane of the sky. Furthermore, the 3D position in the heliosphere of the CMEs were determined by employing co-temporal images from two other coronagraphs: LASCO/C2 onboard SOHO, and COR2 onboard STEREO-A. Finally, the radiometrically calibrated Metis images of the bright UV features were analyzed to provide estimates of their volume and density. From the kinematics and radiometric analyses, we obtained indications of the temperatures of the bright UV cores of these events. The analysis of these strong UV-emitting features associated with coronal mass ejections demonstrates the capabilities of the current constellation of space coronagraphs, Metis, LASCO/C2, and COR2, in providing a complete characterization of the structure and dynamics of eruptive events in their propagation phase from their inception up to several solar radii. Furthermore, we show how the unique capabilities of the Metis instrument to observe these events in both HI Ly-alpha line and polarized VL radiation allow plasma diagnostics on the thermal state of these events., Comment: 26 pages, 26 figures, 2 appendices

The non-association of coronal mass ejections with high energetic flares is sparse. For this reason, the magnetic conditions required for the confinedness of major flares is a topic of active research. Using multi-instrument observations, we investigated the evolution and effects of confinedness in an X3.1 flare, which occurred in active region (AR) 12192. The decrease of net fluxes in the brightening regions, near the footpoints of the multi-sigmoidal AR in photosphere and chromosphere, indicative of flux cancellation favouring tether-cutting reconnection (TCR), is observed using the magnetic field observations of HMI/SDO and SOT/Hinode, respectively. The analysis of spectropolarimetric data obtained by the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer over the brightening regions suggests untwisting of field lines, which further supports TCR. Filaments near polarity inversion line region, resulted from TCR of low lying sheared loops, undergo merging and form an elongated filament. The temperature and density differences between footpoints of the merged filament, revealed by DEM analysis, caused streaming and counter-streaming of plasma flow along the filament and unloads at its footpoints with an average velocity of $\approx$ 40 km s$^{-1}$. This results in decrease of mass of the filament (density decreased by $>50\%$), leading to its rise and expansion outwards. However, due to strong strapping flux, the filament separates itself instead of erupting. Further, the evolution of non-potential parameters describes the characteristics of confinedness of the flare. We present a new solar radio imaging system implemented through the upgrade of the large single-dish telescopes of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), not originally conceived for solar observations. During the development and early science phase of the project (2018-2020), we obtained about 170 maps of the entire solar disk in the 18-26 GHz band, filling the observational gap in the field of solar imaging at these frequencies. These solar images have typical resolutions in the 0.7-2 arcmin range and a brightness temperature sensitivity <10 K. Accurate calibration adopting the Supernova Remnant Cas A as a flux reference, provided typical errors <3% for the estimation of the quiet-Sun level components and for active regions flux measurements. As a first early science result of the project, we present a catalog of radio continuum solar imaging observations with Medicina 32-m and SRT 64-m radio telescopes including the multi-wavelength identification of active regions, their brightness and spectral characterization. The interpretation of the observed emission as thermal bremsstrahlung components combined with gyro-magnetic variable emission pave the way to the use of our system for long-term monitoring of the Sun. Surges are cool and dense ejections typically observed in chromospheric lines and closely related to other solar phenomena like UV bursts or coronal jets. Our aim is to address the current lack of inverted models and diagnostics of surges as well as characterizing their plasma properties. We have analyzed different surges related to UV bursts observed with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) on 2016 April. The mid- and low-chromosphere of the surges are examined by getting their representative Mg II h&k line profiles through the k-means algorithm and performing inversions on them using the STiC code. We have studied the far-UV spectra focusing on the O IV 1399.8 and 1401.2 \r{A} lines, carrying out density diagnostics to determine the transition region properties of these ejections. We have also used experiments performed with the Bifrost code for comparisons. Thanks to k-means, we reduce the number of Mg II h&k profiles to invert by a factor 43.2. The inversions of the representative profiles show that the mid- and low-chromosphere of the surges have temperatures mainly around T $=6$ kK at $ -6.0 \le \log_{10}(\tau) \le -3.2$. For the electronic number density, $n_e$, and line-of-sight velocity, $V_{\mathrm{LOS}}$, the most reliable results from the inversions are within $ -6.0 \le \log_{10}(\tau) \le -4.8$, with $n_e$ ranging from $\sim1.6 \times 10^{11}$ up to $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$, and $V_{\mathrm{LOS}}$ of a few km s$^{-1}$. We find, for the first time, observational evidence of enhanced O IV emission within the surges, indicating that these phenomena have a considerable impact on the transition region even in the weakest far-UV lines. The O IV emitting layers show electron number densities from $2.5\times 10^{10}$ to $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$. The determination of solar wind outflow velocity is fundamental in order to probe the mechanisms of wind acceleration in the corona. We aim to study, via the Doppler dimming technique, the effects that the chromospheric Ly{\alpha} line profile shape causes on the determination of the outflow speed of coronal HI atoms. The Doppler dimming technique takes into account the decrease of coronal Ly{\alpha} radiation in regions where HI atoms flow out in the solar wind. Starting from UV observations (UVCS/SOHO) of the coronal Ly{\alpha} line and simultaneous measurements of pB (LASCO/SOHO and Mk3/MLSO), we studied the effect of the pumping chromospheric Ly{\alpha} line profile through measurements from SOHO/SUMER, UVSP/SMM and LPSP/OSO-8, taken from representative on-disk regions and as a function of time during the solar activity cycle. In particular, we considered the effect of four chromospheric line parameters: line width, depth of the central reversal, asymmetry and distance of the peaks. We find that the range of variability of these parameters is of about 50% for the width, 69% for the depth of the central reversal, 35% for the asymmetry, and 50% for the distance of the peaks. Then, we find that the variability of the pumping Ly{\alpha} profile affects the estimates of the coronal HI velocity by about 9-12%. The physical conditions leading the sunspot penumbra decay are poorly understood so far. We investigate the photospheric magnetic and velocity properties of a sunspot penumbra during the decay phase to advance the current knowledge of the conditions leading to this process. A penumbral decay was observed with the CRISP instrument at the Swedish 1m Solar Telescope on 2016 September 4 and 5 in active region NOAA 12585. During these days, full-Stokes spectropolarimetric scans along the Fe I 630 nm line pair were acquired over more than one hour. We inverted these observations with the VFISV code in order to obtain the evolution of the magnetic and velocity properties. We complement the study with data from instruments onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory and Hinode space missions. The studied penumbra disappears progressively in both time and space. The magnetic flux evolution seems to be linked to the presence of Moving Magnetic Features (MMFs). Decreasing Stokes V signals are observed. Evershed flows and horizontal fields were detected even after the disappearance of the penumbral sector. The analyzed penumbral decay seems to result from the interaction between opposite polarity fields in type III MMFs and penumbra, while the presence of overlying canopies rules the evolution in the different penumbral sectors., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We describe the disappearance of a sector of sunspot penumbra and its restoring process observed in the preceding sunspot of active region NOAA 12348. The evolution of the magnetic field and the plasma flows support the idea that the penumbra forms due to a change of inclination of the magnetic field of the canopy. Moving magnetic features have been observed during the disintegration phase of that sector of sunspot penumbra. During the restoring phase we have not observed any magnetic flux emergence around the sunspot. The restoring process of the penumbra sector completed in about 72 hours and it was accompanied by the transition from the counter-Evershed flow to the classical Evershed flow. The inversion of photospheric spectropolarimetric measurements taken by IBIS allowed us to reconstruct how the uncombed configuration of the magnetic field forms during the new settlement of the penumbra, i.e., the vertical component of the magnetic field seems to be progressively replaced by some horizontal field lines, corresponding to the intra-spines., Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures, accepted for ApJ

We study the photospheric evolution of an exploding granule observed in the quiet Sun at high spatial ($0.3^{\prime\prime}$) and temporal (31.5 s) resolution by the imaging magnetograph Sunrise/IMaX in June 2009. These observations show that the exploding granule is cospatial to a magnetic flux emergence event occurring at mesogranular scale (up to 12 Mm$^{2}$ area). Using a modified version of the SIR code for inverting the IMaX spectropolarimetric measurements, we obtain information about the magnetic configuration of this photospheric feature. In particular, we find evidence of highly inclined emerging fields in the structure, carrying a magnetic flux content up to $4 \times 10^{18}$ Mx. The balance between gas and magnetic pressure in the region of flux emergence, compared with a very quiet region of the Sun, indicates that the additional pressure carried by the emerging flux increases by about 5% the total pressure and appears to allow the granulation to be modified, as predicted by numerical simulations. The overall characteristics suggest that a multi-polar structure emerges into the photosphere, resembling an almost horizontal flux sheet. This seems to be associated with exploding granules. High-resolution observations of the solar photosphere have recently revealed the presence of elongated filamentary bright structures inside sunspot umbrae. These features, which have been called umbral filaments (UFs), differ in morphology, evolution, and magnetic configuration from light bridges that are usually observed to intrude in sunspots. To study an UF observed in the leading sunspot of active region NOAA 12529, we have analyzed spectro-polarimetric observations taken in the photosphere with the spectropolarimeter (SP) aboard the Hinode satellite. High-resolution observations in the upper chromosphere and transition region taken with the IRIS telescope and observations acquired by SDO/HMI and SDO/AIA have been used to complement the spectro-polarimetric analysis. The results obtained from the inversion of the Hinode/SP measurements allow us to discard the hypothesis that UFs are a kind of light bridge. In fact, we find no field-free or low-field strength region cospatial to the observed UF. In contrast, we detect in the structure Stokes profiles that indicate the presence of strong horizontal fields, larger than 2500 G. Furthermore, a significant portion of the UF has opposite polarity with respect to the hosting umbra. In the upper atmospheric layers, we observe filaments being cospatial to the UF in the photosphere. We interpret these findings as suggesting that the UF could be the photospheric manifestation of a flux rope hanging above the sunspot, which triggers the formation of penumbral-like filaments within the umbra via magneto-convection., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Proceedings of the 9th Solar Polarization Workshop SPW9

Penumbral transient brightening events have been attributed to magnetic reconnection episodes occurring in the low corona. We investigated the trigger mechanism of these events in active region NOAA 12546 by using multi-wavelength observations obtained with the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer (IBIS), by the \textit{Solar Dynamics Observatory} (SDO), the \textit{Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph} (IRIS), and the \textit{Hinode} satellites. We focused on the evolution of an area of the penumbra adjacent to two small-scale emerging flux regions (EFRs), which manifested three brightening events detected from the chromosphere to the corona. Two of these events correspond to B-class flares. The same region showed short-lived moving magnetic features (MMFs) that streamed out from the penumbra. In the photosphere, the EFRs led to small-scale penumbral changes associated with a counter-Evershed flow and to a reconfiguration of the magnetic fields in the moat. The brightening events had one of the footpoints embedded in the penumbra and seemed to result from the distinctive interplay between the pre-existing penumbral fields, MMFs, and the EFRs. The \textit{IRIS} spectra measured therein reveal enhanced temperature and asymmetries in spectral lines, suggestive of event triggering at different height in the atmosphere. Specifically, the blue asymmetry noted in \ion{C}{2} and \ion{Mg}{2} h\&k lines suggests the occurrence of chromospheric evaporation at the footpoint located in the penumbra as a consequence of magnetic reconnection process at higher atmospheric heigths., Comment: 14 pages, accepted for ApJ; some figures are in B/W to accomplish size limits

Recent observations of the solar photosphere revealed the presence of elongated filamentary bright structures inside sunspot umbrae, called umbral filaments (UFs). These features differ in morphology, magnetic configuration, and evolution from light bridges that are usually observed to intrude in sunspots. To characterize an UF observed in the umbra of the giant leading sunspot of active region NOAA 12529, we analyze high-resolution observations taken in the photosphere with the spectropolarimeter aboard the Hinode satellite and in the upper chromosphere and transition region with the IRIS telescope. The results of this analysis definitely rule out the hypothesis that the UF might be a kind of light bridge. In fact, we find no field-free or low-field strength region cospatial to the UF. Conversely, we recognize the presence of a strong horizontal field larger than 2500 G, a significant portion of the UF with opposite polarity with respect to the surroundings, and filaments in the upper atmospheric layers corresponding to the UF in the photosphere. These findings suggest that this structure is the photospheric manifestation of a flux rope hanging above the sunspot and forming penumbral-like filaments within the umbra via magneto-convection. Using high-resolution spectropolarimetric data acquired by \textit{IBIS}, as well as \textit{SDO}/HMI observations, we studied the penumbra formation in AR NOAA 11490 and in a sample of twelve ARs appeared on the solar disk on 2011 and 2012, which were characterized by $\beta$-type magnetic field configuration. The results show that the onset of the classical Evershed flow occurs in a very short time scale, 1-3 hours. Studying the formation of the first penumbral sector around the following proto-spot, we found that a stable penumbra forms in the area facing the opposite polarity, which appears to be co-spatial with an AFS, i.e. in a flux emergence region, in contrast with the results of \cite{Schlichenmaier2010} concerning the leading polarity of AR NOAA 11490. Conversely, analyzing the sample of twelve ARs, we noticed that there is not a preferred location for the formation of the first penumbral sector. We also observed before the penumbra formation an inverse Evershed flow, which changes its sign when the penumbra appears. This confirms the observational evidence that the appearance of the penumbral filaments is correlated with the transition from the inverse Evershed to the classical Evershed flow. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that the time needed to form the penumbra may be related to the location where the penumbra first appears. In this paper we describe observations acquired by satellite instruments (Hinode/SOT and IRIS) and ground-based telescopes (ROSA@DST) during two consecutive C7.0 and X1.6 flares occurred in active region NOAA 12205 on 2014 November 7. The analysis of these data show the presence of continuum enhancements during the evolution of the events, observed both in ROSA images and in IRIS spectra. We report multi-wavelength ultraviolet observations taken with the IRIS satellite, concerning the emergence phase in the upper chromosphere and transition region of an emerging flux region (EFR) embedded in the unipolar plage of active region NOAA 12529. The photospheric configuration of the EFR is analyzed in detail benefitting from measurements taken with the spectropolarimeter aboard the Hinode satellite, when the EFR was fully developed. In addition, these data are complemented by full-disk, simultaneous observations of the SDO satellite, relevant to the photosphere and the corona. In the photosphere, magnetic flux emergence signatures are recognized in the fuzzy granulation, with dark alignments between the emerging polarities, cospatial with highly inclined fields. In the upper atmospheric layers, we identify recurrent brightenings that resemble UV bursts, with counterparts in all coronal passbands. These occur at the edges of the EFR and in the region of the arch filament system (AFS) cospatial to the EFR. Jet activity is also found at chromospheric and coronal levels, near the AFS and the observed brightness enhancement sites. The analysis of the IRIS line profiles reveals the heating of dense plasma in the low solar atmosphere and the driving of bi-directional high-velocity flows with speeds up to 100 km/s at the same locations. Furthermore, we detect a correlation between the Doppler velocity and line width of the Si IV 1394 and 1402 \AA{} line profiles in the UV burst pixels and their skewness. Comparing these findings with previous observations and numerical models, we suggest evidence of several long-lasting, small-scale magnetic reconnection episodes between the emerging bipole and the ambient field. This process leads to the cancellation of a pre-existing photospheric flux concentration of the plage with the opposite polarity flux patch of the EFR. Probably, the long-term monitoring of the solar atmosphere started in Italy with the first telescopic observations of the Sun made by Galileo Galilei in the early $17^{\mathrm{th}}$ century. His recorded observations and science results, as well as the work carried out by other following outstanding Italian astronomers inspired the start of institutional programs of regular solar observations at the Arcetri, Catania, and Rome Observatories. These programs have accumulated daily images of the solar photosphere and chromosphere taken at various spectral bands over a time span greater than 80 years. In the last two decades, regular solar observations were continued with digital cameras only at the Catania and Rome Observatories, which are now part of the INAF National Institute for Astrophysics. At the two sites, daily solar images are taken at the photospheric G-band, Blue ($\lambda=409.4$ nm), and Red ($\lambda=606.9$ nm) continua spectral ranges and at the chromospheric Ca II K and H$\alpha$ lines, with a $2^{\prime\prime}$ spatial resolution. Solar observation in Italy, which benefits from over 2500 hours of yearly sunshine, currently aims at the operational monitoring of solar activity and long-term variability and at the continuation of the historical series as well. Existing instruments will be soon enriched by the SAMM double channel telescope equipped with magneto-optical filters that will enable the tomography of the solar atmosphere with simultaneous observations at the K I 769.9 nm and Na I D 589.0 nm lines. We studied the physical parameters of the penumbra in a large and fully-developed sunspot, one of the largest over the last two solar cycles, by using full-Stokes measurements taken at the photospheric Fe I 617.3 nm and chromospheric Ca II 854.2 nm lines with the Interferometric Bidimensional Spectrometer. Inverting measurements with the NICOLE code, we obtained the three-dimensional structure of the magnetic field in the penumbra from the bottom of the photosphere up to the middle chromosphere. We analyzed the azimuthal and vertical gradient of the magnetic field strength and inclination. Our results provide new insights on the properties of the penumbral magnetic fields in the chromosphere at atmospheric heights unexplored in previous studies. We found signatures of the small-scale spine and intra-spine structure of both the magnetic field strength and inclination at all investigated atmospheric heights. In particular, we report typical peak-to-peak variations of the field strength and inclination of $\approx 300$ G and $\approx 20^{\circ}$, respectively, in the photosphere, and of $\approx 200$ G and $\approx 10^{\circ}$ in the chromosphere. Besides, we estimated the vertical gradient of the magnetic field strength in the studied penumbra: we find a value of $\approx 0.3$ G km$^{-1}$ between the photosphere and the middle chromosphere. We describe high resolution observations of a GOES B-class flare characterized by a circular ribbon at chromospheric level, corresponding to the network at photospheric level. We interpret the flare as a consequence of a magnetic reconnection event occurred at a three-dimensional (3D) coronal null point located above the supergranular cell. The potential field extrapolation of the photospheric magnetic field indicates that the circular chromospheric ribbon is cospatial with the fan footpoints, while the ribbons of the inner and outer spines look like compact kernels. We found new interesting observational aspects that need to be explained by models: 1) a loop corresponding to the outer spine became brighter a few minutes before the onset of the flare; 2) the circular ribbon was formed by several adjacent compact kernels characterized by a size of 1"-2"; 3) the kernels with stronger intensity emission were located at the outer footpoint of the darker filaments departing radially from the center of the supergranular cell; 4) these kernels start to brighten sequentially in clockwise direction; 5) the site of the 3D null point and the shape of the outer spine were detected by RHESSI in the low energy channel between 6.0 and 12.0 keV. Taking into account all these features and the length scales of the magnetic systems involved by the event we argued that the low intensity of the flare may be ascribed to the low amount of magnetic flux and to its symmetric configuration., Comment: accepted for the publication in apj

We studied the formation of the first penumbral sector around a pore in the following polarity of the Active Region (AR) NOAA 11490. We used a high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution data set acquired by the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer operating at the NSO/Dunn Solar Telescope as well as data taken by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite. On the side towards the leading polarity, elongated granules in the photosphere and an arch filament system (AFS) in the chromosphere are present, while the magnetic field shows a sea-serpent configuration, indicating a region of magnetic flux emergence. We found that the formation of a stable penumbra in the following polarity of the AR begins in the area facing the opposite polarity located below the AFS in the flux emergence region, differently from what found by Schlichenmaier and colleaguestbf. We present the results obtained by analyzing high spatial and spectral resolution data of the solar photosphere acquired by the CRisp Imaging SpectroPolarimeter at the Swedish Solar Telescope on 6 August 2011, relevant to a large sunspot with a light bridge (LB) observed in NOAA AR 11263. These data are complemented by simultaneous Hinode Spectropolarimeter (SP) observation in the Fe I 630.15 nm and 630.25 nm lines. The continuum intensity map shows a discontinuity of the radial distribution of the penumbral filaments in correspondence with the LB, which shows a dark lane (about 0.3" wide and about 8.0" long) along its main axis. The available data were inverted with the Stokes Inversion based on Response functions (SIR) code and physical parameters maps were obtained. The line-of-sight (LOS) velocity of the plasma along the LB derived from the Doppler effect shows motions towards and away from the observer up to 0.6 km/s, which are lower in value than the LOS velocities observed in the neighbouring penumbral filaments. The noteworthy result is that we find motions toward the observer up to 0.6 km/s in the dark lane where the LB is located between two umbral cores, while the LOS velocity motion toward the observer is strongly reduced where the LB is located between an umbral core at one side and penumbral filaments on the other side. Statistically, the LOS velocities correspond to upflows/downflows andcomparing these results with Hinode/SP data, we conclude that the surrounding magnetic field configuration (whether more or less inclined) could have a role in maintaining the conditions for the process of plasma piling up along the dark lane. The results obtained from our study support and confirm outcomes of recent magnetohydro-dynamic simulations showing upflows along the main axis of a LBs.

We studied the variations of line-of-sight photospheric plasma flows during the formation phase of the penumbra around a pore in Active Region NOAA 11490. We used a high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution data set acquired by the Interferometric BIdimensional Spectrometer (IBIS) operating at the NSO/Dunn Solar Telescope as well as data taken by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite (SDO/HMI). Before the penumbra formed we observed a redshift of the spectral line in the inner part of the annular zone surrounding the pore as well as a blueshift of material associated with opposite magnetic polarity further away from the pore. We found that the onset of the classical Evershed flow occurs in a very short time scale -- 1-3 hours -- while the penumbra is forming. During the same time interval we found changes in the magnetic field inclination in the penumbra, with the vertical field actually changing sign near the penumbral edge, while the total magnetic field showed a significant increase, about 400 G. To explain these and other observations related to the formation of the penumbra and the onset of the Evershed flow we propose a scenario in which the penumbra is formed by magnetic flux dragged down from the canopy surrounding the initial pore. We report on the photospheric evolution of an intermediate-scale (~4 Mm footpoint separation) magnetic bipole, from emergence to decay, observed in the quiet Sun at high spatial 0".3 and temporal (33 s) resolution. The observations were acquired by the IMaX imaging magnetograph during the first science flight of the Sunrise balloon-borne solar observatory. The bipole flux content is 6 x 10^17 Mx, representing a structure bridging the gap between granular scale bipoles and the smaller ephemeral regions. Footpoints separate at a speed of 3.5 km s-1 and reach a maximum distance of 4.5 Mm before the field dissolves. The evolution of the bipole is revealed to be very dynamic: we found a proper motion of the bipole axis and detected a change of the azimuth angle of 90{\deg} in 300 seconds. The overall morphology and behaviour are in agreement with previous analyses of bipolar structures emerging at granular scale, but we also found several similarities with emerging flux structures at larger scale. The flux growth rate is 2.6 x 15 Mx s-1, while the mean decay rate is one order of magnitude smaller. We describe in some detail the decay phase of the bipole footpoints which includes break up into smaller structures, interaction with pre-existing fields leading to cancellation but appears to be dominated by an as-yet unidentified diffusive process that removes most of the flux with an exponential flux decay curve. The diffusion constant (8 x 10^2 km^2 s-1) associated with this decay is similar to the values used to describe the large scale diffusion in flux transport models., Comment: in press for ApJ

The interaction between emerging magnetic flux and the pre-existing ambient field has become a "hot" topic for both numerical simulations and high-resolution observations of the solar atmosphere. The appearance of brightenings and surges during episodes of flux emergence is believed to be a signature of magnetic reconnection processes. We present an analysis of a small-scale flux emergence event in NOAA 10971, observed simultaneously with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope on La Palma and the \emph{Hinode} satellite during a joint campaign in September 2007. Extremely high-resolution G-band, H$\alpha$, and \ion{Ca}{2} H filtergrams, \ion{Fe}{1} and \ion{Na}{1} magnetograms, EUV raster scans, and X-ray images show that the emerging region was associated with chromospheric, transition region and coronal brightenings, as well as with chromospheric surges. We suggest that these features were caused by magnetic reconnection at low altitude in the atmosphere. To support this idea, we perform potential and linear force-free field extrapolations using the FROMAGE service. The extrapolations show that the emergence site is cospatial with a 3D null point, from which a spine originates. This magnetic configuration and the overall orientation of the field lines above the emerging flux region are compatible with the structures observed in the different atmospheric layers, and remain stable against variations of the force-free field parameter. Our analysis supports the predictions of recent 3D numerical simulations that energetic phenomena may result from the interaction between emerging flux and the pre-existing chromospheric and coronal field., Comment: In press for ApJ

\ion{Ca}{2} H emission is a well-known indicator of magnetic activity in the Sun and other stars. It is also viewed as an important signature of chromospheric heating. However, the \ion{Ca}{2} H line has not been used as a diagnostic of magnetic flux emergence from the solar interior. Here we report on Hinode observations of chromospheric \ion{Ca}{2} H brightenings associated with a repeated, small-scale flux emergence event. We describe this process and investigate the evolution of the magnetic flux, G-band brightness, and \ion{Ca}{2} H intensity in the emerging region. Our results suggest that energy is released in the chromosphere as a consequence of interactions between the emerging flux and the pre-existing magnetic field, in agreement with recent 3D numerical simulations., Comment: 12 Pages, 6 Figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters
