- Abstract
As part of a pedagogical reading of Dante’s Commedia, we have tried to emphasize the role of Virgil, as a guide and teacher in the journey of the Florentine poet. Virgil accompanies Dante for 64 cantos, he performs the functions of guide and teacher, but he does so with the integration of the "sweet father", who exhorts his student to persevere in his journey. We wanted to try to apply to the various guiding functions carried out by Virgil some of the pedagogical categories that adapt to three professional figures active in the training of adults: the mentor, the coach and the spiritual director. Virgil works as a mentor while guiding Dante through the ways of Hell, then he transforms himself into a coach when he leads him on the ascent of the Mount of Purgatory. The role of the spiritual director can be attributed to Virgil on the level of the anagogic reading of the poem as an itinerary of the soul to God. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
