2. Near real-time assimilation of volcanic sulfur dioxide from different satellites in the MOCAGE model during volcanic eruptions

Abstract

Sulfur dioxide emissions during volcanic eruptions can have a significant impact on air trafic. Indeed, sulfur dioxide is a precursor of sulfuric acid which is highly corrosive and damages aircraft engines when they pass through an plume of sulfur dioxide.Currently, to predict the concentration of sulfur dioxide of volcanic origin in the French chemistry-model MOCAGE, SO2 total columns providing from TROPOMI and IASI satellites are assimilated in MOCAGE. Nevertheless, we assume that the SO2 plume is between 3 and 10km of altitude, which is not the case for all volcanic eruptions. A way to improve our analyses and the forecasts is to use information about the height of the plume.TROPOMI on Sentinel-5p is able to measure SO2 columns with high horizontal resolution from the surface to the top of the atmosphere with an information altitude of the plume for the strong total columns. The IASI instruments on Metop B and C measure total SO2 columns with a lower resolution than TROPOMI and do not give any information on the presence of volcanic SO2 below 5km altitude, but they give an information about height even for weak SO2 total columns. Height is used to constrain the altitude of plume and the thickness in the model. Abstract

International audience; La deuxième conférence internationale Iasi (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer), qui s'est tenue à Sévrier (Haute-Savoie) du 24 au 29 janvier 2010, a rassemblé 150 scientifiques de tous horizons pour faire le point sur l'instrument Iasi, le traitement des données, les résultats de son exploitation, trois ans après sa mise en service, et pour envisager les suites du programme. Dans cet article, on présente l'instrument monté sur les trois satellites Metop d'Eumetsat qui se succéderont jusqu'en 2020.On illustre succinctement les extraordinaires performances de cet instrument devenu référence pour l'interétalonnage de capteurs infrarouges. Après un rappel sur l'organisation du traitement des données, les perspectives à court et moyen termes sont mises en lumière. La partie principale traite des résultats les plus récents exposés à la conférence dans les différents domaines d'application de Iasi : la prévision numérique, l'étude de la composition atmosphérique, les applications opérationnelles de la chimie atmosphérique et le suivi du changement climatique. Le dernier paragraphe est consacré au futur avec les évolutions attendues des produits et les perspectives de l'après Iasi avec le sondeur infrarouge sur Météosat troisième génération et le sondeur Iasi nouvelle génération.

Abstract

On 26 September 2006, a strong mesoscale storm, with some resemblance to a polar low, hit south-eastern Italy. Intense precipitation was detected by AMSU satellite observations at 02 UTC 26 Sept. This event is investigated from a numerical point of view. We aim at: • demonstrating the ability of the high-resolution PV advection model MIMOSA to characterize stratospheric intrusions at very fine scale, and reaching well below the 350K isentropic level. • assessing the ability of ARPEGE to produce realistic precipitation fields for intense and localized precipitating events with the improved description of the stratospheric intrusion given by MIMOSA.

Abstract

This article focuses on the simulation and the assimilation of satellite infrared observations in convective-scale numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems. A radiative transfer model that includes profiles for liquid-water content, ice-water content and cloud fraction was used to simulate cloud-affected radiances as background equivalents. This approach avoids the use of cloud parameters (cloud-top pressure and effective cloud fraction) deduced from a CO2 slicing algorithm and the modelling of clouds by single-layer clouds. The advanced radiative transfer model was evaluated using infrared observations measured by the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI). The observation-screening procedure that was developed to improve the selection of usable cloudy scenes led to a good agreement between observations and background equivalents. For that purpose, a radiance analysis of collocated Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) pixels inside each IASI field of view was used. The goal of this preliminary work is to assess the feasibility of adding the cloud variables (liquid and ice-water contents) to the state vector of the assimilation system. The approach is illustrated with one-dimensional variational (1D-Var) retrievals. The physical consistency of the 1D-Var adjustments is verified with real observations. Abstract

The article presents a study on the intercomparison of ozone profiles in Antarctica to quantify ozone depletion or recovery. The study employed Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) instrument, global positioning system (GPS) receiver, MetOp satellite collected at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, during the Concordiasi campaign. Results reveal that overestimation of ozone cannot be explained by the IASI to measure the high gradient because of zone depletion process.
