Abstract Bacteria withstand antibiotic treatment through three alternative mechanisms: resistance, persistence or tolerance. While resistance and persistence have been described, whether drug-induced tolerance exists in cancer cells remains largely unknown. Here, we show that human cancer cells elicit a tolerant response when exposed to commonly used chemotherapy regimens, propelled by the pervasive activation of autophagy, leading to the comprehensive activation of DNA damage repair pathways. After prolonged drug exposure, such tolerant responses morph into persistence, whereby the increased DNA damage repair is entirely reversed. The central regulator of mitophagy PINK1 drives this reduction in DNA repair via the cytoplasmic relocalization of the cell identity master HNF4A, thus hampering HNF4A transcriptional activation of DNA repair genes. We conclude that exposing cancer cells to relevant standard-of-care antitumour therapies induces a pervasive drug-induced tolerant response that might be broadly exploited to increase the impact of first-line, adjuvant treatments and debulking in advanced cancers.

Technologies and digital tools such as laser scanning and photogrammetry are nowadays widely used in the field of architectural heritage survey, being able of producing 3D models characterized by high metric and morphological accuracy. These databases are becoming essential also for the development of more effective interventions on heritage buildings. Despite the advancement of increasingly automated analytical procedures, the management and analysis of point cloud models can still be quite time-consuming and complex, depending on specific assessments to be carried out. In the direction of optimizing these processing steps, several research is being carried out by applying Artificial Intelligence processes to make predictions based on sample data.The aim of the paper is to analyse point clouds processing focusing on geometric and radiometric features for diagnostic analysis. A specific focus aims at analysing possible in-depth uses of the intensity value as a benchmark for historical surfaces assessment, toward an optimized models’ interpretation and classification of the 3D data points, integrating data and information from different sensors.Point clouds under analysis have been carried out by different acquisition techniques; this provides an interesting opportunity to compare the results in terms of intensity value produced by different sensors. The paper will analyse the State of the Art, also illustrating a set of outcomes obtained by the authors, deepening two specific case studies, in order to outline not only the main background and shortcomings in managing complex database, but also possible innovations pointing out new research questions.DOI: https://doi.org/10.20365/disegnarecon.32.2024.8

Summary: Background: Individuals with primary and secondary immunodeficiencies, being more susceptible to infections, are a priority for vaccination. Here, we determined and compared in a longitudinal study the immune response elicited by SARS-CoV-2 vaccination across different groups of individuals who are immunocompromised. Methods: In the PatoVac_COV longitudinal prospective single-centre study, the spike-specific B cell and antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccination were compared across 5 different groups of individuals with haematological malignancies, hematopoietic stem cell (HCT) or solid organ transplantation (SOT), undergoing haemodialysis, and people living with HIV (PLWH), for a total of 585 participants. Data from participants who were immunocompromised were compared to a group of 123 participants who were immunocompetent. Blood samples were collected before and after each vaccine administration, up to 2 years. Findings: A different immune responsiveness was observed after the first two vaccine doses, with haematological, haemodialysis, and SOT participants showing reduced responsiveness compared to HCT and PLWH, and relative to the comparison group. Spike-specific B cell response was both slower and lower in all groups except in PLWH when compared to participants who were immunocompetent. However, the first booster dose enhanced both the B and the antibody responses in all groups, that persisted up to 2 years after the first vaccine administration. The administration of Omicron-adapted booster vaccines promoted a primary BA.2 RBD-specific B cell response, especially in participants who were immunocompromised. Despite repeated vaccinations, a subset of persistent low-responders, especially among SOT, was identified. Interpretation: Our study highlights the heterogeneous immune response across individuals with different pathologies, the pivotal role of the first booster dose, the primary activation of Omicron-specific B cells elicited by updated variant-adapted vaccines and the persistence of low-responders despite multiple vaccine administrations. These aspects have a clinical relevance for planning vaccination schedules tailored for individuals with different immunocompromising conditions. Tracheostomy is one of the most performed procedures in intensive care unit. Dilatational techniques, such as those described by Ciaglia, Griggs, or Fantoni, are currently the best choices as they can be easily performed at the bedside. Like any other intervention, early and late complications can occur even if the procedure appears to be performed without any issues. Although using a bronchoscope can make tracheostomy easier and safer, its routine utilization remains controversial. We describe a new method to further reduce the incidence of some complications: retroversion bronchoscopy. This new approach is not difficult to master and may be useful in other intensive care unit scenarios as well.

Supermicrosurgical lymphaticovenular anastomosis represents an established procedure for lymphedema treatment, the effectiveness of which has been well documented in international literature. Nevertheless, currently, no standards for supermicrosurgical lymphaticovenular anastomosis have been established regarding the type, location, and number of anastomoses so that the approach to surgical scenarios still depends on the surgeons' preference and ability. A comprehensive literature search for articles involving supermicrosurgical lymphaticovenular anastomosis techniques was performed on the PubMed/Medline/SCOPUS databases. Results, including the names of the technique and their characteristics, such as indications, surgical time, and configuration of the vessels, are reported. Each technique included was then performed five times, and for each of them, patency was tested intraoperatively and 30 days after surgery. Moreover, an efficacy score was assigned, taking into consideration the number of lymphatic vessels anastomosed, the average time for anastomosis, and the difficulty of each technique. A total of 148 articles resulted from the literature search. In total, 16 papers met the criteria for inclusion as defined in the methods and were included in the review as a “supermicrosurgical lymphaticovenular anastomosis technique.” Efficacy scores ranged from 0.21 to 1, intraoperative patency ranged from 80% to 100%, and the 30-days patency test ranged from 60% to 100%. To perform effective anastomoses and aim to maximize the results of supermicrosurgical lymphaticovenular anastomosis, a modern microsurgeon should be trained to recognize and manage the most common vessel configurations, performing the most adequate one of the several techniques described. Further studies are required to validate and compare the use of the supermicrosurgical lymphaticovenular anastomosis techniques reviewed.

Objective: This study aimed to compare the effects of orthodontic treatment on the same patients using aligners (upper arch) versus traditional fixed appliances (lower arch) on oral hygiene and periodontal health. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 patients, all treated by the same orthodontist and with an average age of 26 years, were included in the study. The research focused on factors predisposing patients to periodontitis, as well as plaque and tartar accumulation. Statistical analysis was performed using the paired-samples Student’s t-test, with values of p < 0.05 deemed statistically significant. Results: Patients treated with fixed orthodontic appliances generally showed increased plaque accumulation (+10% PI) and a decline in periodontal health compared to those treated with aligners (40% presented a high level of S.Mutans and Lactobacilli). In patients who did not maintain proper oral hygiene, the initial conditions of the upper arch remained stable, while the lower arch exhibited significant deterioration, with increased plaque buildup and greater tissue inflammation. Conclusions: The findings emphasize the critical role of individual oral hygiene practices during orthodontic treatment in preserving periodontal health. Aligners appear to be more favorable in protecting periodontal tissues, improving plaque control, and reducing gingival inflammation. Various supplementary approaches for plaque management and microbial colonization in saliva should be implemented based on the type of orthodontic appliance used.

Background: Zygomatico-maxillary complex (ZMC) fractures are prevalent facial injuries with significant functional and aesthetic implications. Computer-assisted surgery (CAS) offers precise surgical planning and outcome evaluation. The study aimed to evaluate the application of CAS in the analysis of ZMC fracture outcomes and to propose a reproducible workflow for surgical outcome assessment using cephalometric landmarks. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 16 patients treated for unilateral ZMC fractures at the Maxillofacial Surgery Unit of Siena University Hospital (2017–2024). Inclusion criteria included ZMC fractures classified as Zingg B or C, treated via open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Pre- and post-operative CT scans were processed for two- and three-dimensional analyses. Discrepancies between CAS-optimized reduction and achieved surgical outcomes were quantified using cephalometric landmarks and volumetric assessments. Results: Out of the 16 patients (69% male, mean age 48.1 years), fractures were predominantly on the right side (81%). CAS comparison between the post-operative and the contralateral side revealed significant asymmetries along the X and Y axes, particularly in the fronto-zygomatic suture (FZS), zygo-maxillary point (MP), and zygo-temporal point (ZT). Computer-assisted comparison between the post-operative and the CAS-simulated reductions showed statistical differences along all three orthonormal axes, highlighting the challenges in achieving ideal symmetry despite advanced surgical techniques. CAS-optimized reductions demonstrated measurable improvements compared to traditional methods, underscoring their utility in outcome evaluation. Conclusions: CAS technology enhances the precision of ZMC fracture outcome evaluation, allowing for detailed comparison between surgical outcomes and virtual simulations. Its application underscores the potential for improved surgical planning and execution, especially in complex cases. Future studies should focus on expanding sample size, refining workflows, and integrating artificial intelligence to automate processes for broader clinical applicability.

Recent high-angular-resolution observations indicate the need for core growth to form high-mass stars. To understand the gas dynamics at the core scale in the very early evolutionary stages before being severely affected by feedback, we have conducted Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations toward a 70 μ m dark massive clump, G337.541-00.082 as part of the Global and Local infall in the ASHES sample (GLASHES) program. Using dense gas tracers such as N _2 H ^+ ( J = 1–0) and HNC ( J = 3–2), we find signs of infall from the position–velocity diagram and more directly from the blue asymmetry profile in addition to the clump-scale velocity gradient. We estimate infall velocities from intermediate and low-mass cores to be 0.28–1.45 km s ^−1 , and infall rates to be on the order of 10 ^−4 –10 ^−3 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , both are higher than those measured in low-mass star-forming regions by more than a factor of 5 and an order of magnitude, respectively. We find a strong correlation between the infall velocity with the nonthermal velocity dispersion, suggesting that infall may contribute significantly to the observed line width. Consistent with clump-fed scenarios, we show that the mass infall rate is larger for larger core masses and shorter distances to the clump center. Such high infall rates in cores embedded in IRDCs can be considered as strong signs of core growth, allowing high-mass star formation from intermediate-mass cores that would not initially form high-mass stars at their current mass.

Background: In this narrative review, we have surveyed results obtained from a research program dealing with the role of semantic memory disorders as a predictor of progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Objectives: In this research program, we have taken into account many different putative markers, provided of a different complexity in the study of the semantic network. These markers ranged from the number of words produced on a semantic fluency task to the following: (a) the discrepancy between scores obtained on semantic vs. phonemic word fluency tests; (b) the presence, at the single-word level, of features (such as a loss of low typical words on a category verbal fluency task) typical of a degraded semantic system; or (c) the presence of more complex phenomena (such as the semantic distance between consecutively produced word pairs) concerning the organization of the semantic network. In the present review, all these studies have been presented, providing separate subsections for (a) methods, (b) results, and (c) a short discussion. Some tentative general conclusions have been drawn at the end of the review. We found that at baseline all these markers are impaired in MCI patients who will later convert to AD, but also that they do not necessarily show a linear worsening during the progression to AD and allow one to make different predictions about the time of development of AD. Our conclusions were that, rather than searching for the best marker of conversion, we should use a range of different markers allowing us to obtain the information most appropriate to the goal of our investigation.

Objective: Lymphatic fistula is a complication that may occur in all cases where lymphostasis arise, due to a damage to the lymphatic drainage system. The current study evaluates the effectiveness of supramicrosurgical lymphatico-venular anastomosis (s-LVA) for treating lymphatic fistula. Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective study that aims to evaluate the effectiveness of s-LVA in treating lymphatic fistula. The inclusion criterion was the presence of persistent chronic lymphatic fistula; the exclusion criteria were refuse of the patient, terminal patients. All patients presented with lymphatic fistula. To evaluate lymphatic patency, indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography was performed in preoperative, immediately afterward and 1 month after s-LVA. Postoperative follow-up was performed for 1 year. The site for skin incision was selected on the basis of the ICG lymphography and the venous mapping. s-LVA was performed with 11-0 sutures using an operating microscope. Afterward, the skin incision was sutured with 6-0 absorbable sutures. Results: Eight patients (five males and three females) were enrolled in this study. Lymphatic vessels identified during s-LVA resulted ectasic. ICG lymphography demostrated patency of the anastomosis in all patients since the first postoperative day except one case, where the anastomosis resulted patent 1 month after s-LVA. No clinical complications were reported during the postoperative follow-up: no cellulitis and no recurrence of the fistula occurred in the year after s-LVA. Total recovery of fistula was observed and confirmed for the year after the intervention. Conclusions: This study evidenced positive results with lymphorrhea interruption and recovery of the fistula after the intervention.

Background: Individuals with intellectual developmental disability (IDD) often face barriers in accessing dental care. The main aim of the present study was to test the feasibility and the outcome of oral hygiene (OH) procedures in Rett syndrome (RS) patients, and a secondary aim was to test the utility of music therapy during dental hygiene procedures. Methods: A case group (Group 1) of female patients with RS (stage 3 of disease, age > 5 years and p value < 0.001). The mean duration of the oral hygiene treatment was 7018″ (SD 3272″) in Group 1 and 873″ (SD 161″) in Group 0 (p value < 0.001). The mean duration of OH was significantly higher in Subgroup 1M and Subgroup 0M. Discussion: Based on the results of our case-control study, OH procedures can be successfully performed in RS patients with good compliance and efficacy. In addition, our study provides preliminary evidence to suggest that music therapy may be a useful adjunct, as it appears to improve patient cooperation.

We evaluated the effect of compression leggings with micromassage in association with physical activity on women with lipedema, not previously treated and without recent changes in body weight. The treatment resulted in an improvement in all subjective parameters, in spontaneous and evoked pain, in the volume of the limbs, in the absence of significant changes in body weight, and regardless of the duration of use, age, years of illness, the clinical stage, and body mass index (BMI). Evoked pain did not improve in areas affected by untreated lipedema; foot circumferences did not increase. We found a significant reduction in the thickness of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and skin evaluated in multiple points of the lower limb. Micromassage compression leggings are proposed as an integral part of conservative treatment. A method is proposed for the clinical evaluation of evoked pain, called the Progressive Pain Check (PPC), which allows for the calculation of a numerical score called the Ricolfi–Patton Score (RPS) and for the ultrasound evaluation of tissues. The method is simple and repeatable and allows for completion of the clinical evaluation of the patient at diagnosis and for an evaluation of the effects of various treatments, even applied to just one side of the body.

Only a handful of massive starless core candidates have been discovered so far, but none of them have been fully confirmed. Within the MM1 clump in the filamentary infrared dark cloud G34.43+0.24 that was covered by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) ATOMS survey at Band 3 (∼2″, 6000 au) and the ALMA-QUARKS survey at Band 6 (∼0.″3, 900 au), two prestellar core candidates MM1-C and E1 with masses of 71 and 20 M _⊙ and radii of 2100–4400 au were discovered. The two cores show no obvious sign of star formation activities. In particular, MM1-C is a very promising massive prestellar core candidate with a total gas mass of 71 M _⊙ . Within MM1-C, we detected two extremely dense substructures, C1 and C2, as characterized by their high densities of ${n}_{{{\rm{H}}}_{2}}\sim {10}^{8\mbox{--}9}\,{\mathrm{cm}}^{-3}$ . Moreover, evidence of further fragmentation in C2 was also revealed. We have detected the primordial fragmentation in the earliest stage of massive star formation, and we speculate that MM1-C would be the birthplace of a massive multiple system. However, we cannot fully rule out the possibility that the massive prestellar core MM1-C will just form a cluster of low-mass stars if it undergoes further fragmentation.

Background and purpose: We aimed to evaluate the long-term predictive value of radiographic abnormality and/or hip pain assessed 5 years following primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and the occurrence of revision for aseptic loosening between 5 and 25 years postoperatively. Patients and methods: We included all primary THAs performed between 1996 and 2011 (same uncemented cup, polyethylene-ceramic bearing, 28 mm head, cemented stem) and prospectively enrolled in the institutional registry, for whom baseline and follow-up radiographs were available. At 5 years radiographically we assessed femoral osteolysis and/or stem migration. Pain was evaluated with the Harris Hip pain subscore. Kaplan–Meier survival and Cox regression analyses were performed. Results: 1,317 primary THAs were included. 25 THAs (2%) were revised for aseptic stem loosening. Any abnormal radiographic sign at 5 years was present in 191 THAs (14%). Occasional hip pain was reported by 20% and slight to severe pain by 12% of patients at 5 years. In patients < 60 years, 10 of the 12 later revised for aseptic stem loosening had abnormal radiographs at 5 years vs. 5 of the 13 later revised in those ≥ 60 years. Hazard ratios (HR) were 34 (95% confidence interval [CI] 7–155) in younger vs. 4 (CI 1–11) in the older group. HR for association of hip pain at 5 years with future revision was 3 (CI 1–5). Conclusion: The presence of abnormal radiographic signs 5 years after THA was strongly associated with later revision for aseptic stem loosening, especially in patients < 60 years. The association between pain at 5 years and future revision was much weaker.

High-latitude (∣ b ∣ > 30°) molecular clouds have virial parameters that exceed 1, but whether these clouds can form stars has not been studied systematically. Using JCMT SCUBA-2 archival data, we surveyed 70 fields that target high-latitude Planck Galactic cold clumps (HLPCs) to find dense cores with density of 10 ^5 –10 ^6 cm ^−3 and size of 1 × 10 ^21 cm ^−2 ). At an average rms of 15 mJy beam ^−1 , we detected Galactic dense cores in only one field, G6.04+36.77 (L183) while also identifying 12 extragalactic objects and two young stellar objects. Compared to the low-latitude clumps, dense cores are scarce in HLPCs. With synthetic observations, the densities of cores are constrained to be n _c ≲ 10 ^5 cm ^−3 should they exist in HLPCs. Low-latitude clumps, Taurus clumps, and HLPCs form a sequence where a higher virial parameter corresponds to a lower dense-core detection rate. If HLPCs were affected by the Local Bubble, the scarcity should favor turbulence-inhibited rather than supernova-driven star formation. Studies of the formation mechanism of the L183 molecular cloud are warranted.

Using new continuum and molecular line data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Three-millimeter Observations of Massive Star-forming Regions (ATOMS) survey and archival Very Large Array, 4.86 GHz data, we present direct observational evidence of hierarchical triggering relating three epochs of massive star formation in a ringlike H ii region, G24.47+0.49. We find from radio flux analysis that it is excited by a massive star(s) of spectral type O8.5V–O8V from the first epoch of star formation. The swept-up ionized ring structure shows evidence of secondary collapse, and within this ring, a burst of massive star formation is observed in different evolutionary phases, which constitutes the second epoch. ATOMS spectral line (e.g., HCO ^+ (1–0)) observations reveal an outer concentric molecular gas ring expanding at a velocity of ∼9 km s ^−1 , constituting the direct and unambiguous detection of an expanding molecular ring. It harbors twelve dense molecular cores with surface mass density greater than 0.05 g cm ^−2 , a threshold typical of massive star formation. Half of them are found to be subvirial and thus in gravitational collapse making them the third epoch of potential massive star-forming sites.

Electroencephalography (EEG)-based emotion recognition is gaining increasing importance due to its potential applications in various scientific fields, ranging from psychophysiology to neuromarketing. A number of approaches have been proposed that use machine learning (ML) technology to achieve high recognition performance, which relies on engineering features from brain activity dynamics. Since ML performance can be improved by utilizing 2D feature representation that exploits the spatial relationships among the features, here we propose a novel input representation that involves re-arranging EEG features as an image that reflects the top view of the subject’s scalp. This approach enables emotion recognition through image-based ML methods such as pre-trained deep neural networks or “trained-from-scratch” convolutional neural networks. We have employed both of these techniques in our study to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed input representation. We also compare the recognition performance of these methods against state-of-the-art tabular data analysis approaches, which do not utilize the spatial relationships between the sensors. We test our proposed approach using two publicly available benchmark datasets for EEG-based emotion recognition tasks, namely DEAP and MAHNOB-HCI. Our results show that the “trained-from-scratch” convolutional neural network outperforms the best approaches in the literature, achieving 97.8% and 98.3% accuracy in valence and arousal classification on MAHNOB-HCI, and 91% and 90.4% on DEAP, respectively.

Se analizan las intersecciones entre territorio, movilidades y experiencias educativas de jóvenes de un barrio periférico de la ciudad de Córdoba, Argentina. A partir de un abordaje etnográfico, basado en observaciones, talleres de mapeo territorial y entrevistas grupales con estudiantes de nivel secundario, damos cuenta de una monopolización de tiempos y espacios por parte de la escuela, que inhibe su participación en otras esferas sociales significativas. Desde la perspectiva juvenil, la escuela asume una connotación paradojal: es un «buen lugar» para estar, aunque también un ámbito que no satisface demandas específicas relativas a la salud, el respeto a la diversidad y el reconocimiento. El papel de las/os educadoras/es no es impugnado, tanto como el modo en que muchas/os están pudiendo hacer frente a dichas demandas.

Abstract Background Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is significantly affected, regardless of the stage of the disease, as regards the physical, psychological and social functioning dimension. Big-Five personality traits can affect patients’ HRQoL and willingness to take treatment options. Illness denial consists of denial of negative emotions, resistance to change and conscious avoidance. Poorer HRQoL can predict a higher risk of hospitalization and mortality, and broadly a worse adjustment to the dialytic therapy. Thus, a clearer knowledge of the psychological variables associated with a worse HRQoL in the predialysis stage might improve the intervention planning. No study investigated illness denial and personality traits simultaneously. We investigated the role of illness denial and Big-Five personality traits in the domains of HRQoL in predialysis patients with CKD. Methods One hundred adults (mean age: 75.87 years) with CKD participated. The Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short form, the Italian version of Ten Item Personality Inventory Revised, the Illness Denial Questionnaire, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form-Y were administered. Results Illness denial was associated with increased HRQoL related to symptoms/problems, effect and burden of CKD and cognitive functions domains, and it was a predictor of higher HRQoL in the last three domains mentioned above. Extraversion was related to better work status and sexual function; agreeableness was linked to elevated cognitive function, quality of social interaction and sexual function; conscientiousness was related to better sexual function; neuroticism was linked to improved cognitive and sexual functions; in the end, openness to experience was related to fewer symptoms and problems. Conclusions This is the first study which simultaneously assessed Big-Five personality traits and illness denial in different domains of HRQoL of CKD patients. Personalised psychological interventions aimed at improving HRQoL in this population might focus on specific illness denial processes and personality traits.

Background: In the evolving field of maxillofacial surgery, integrating advanced technologies like Large Language Models (LLMs) into medical practices, especially for trauma triage, presents a promising yet largely unexplored potential. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using LLMs for triaging complex maxillofacial trauma cases by comparing their performance against the expertise of a tertiary referral center. Methods: Utilizing a comprehensive review of patient records in a tertiary referral center over a year-long period, standardized prompts detailing patient demographics, injury characteristics, and medical histories were created. These prompts were used to assess the triage suggestions of ChatGPT 4.0 and Google GEMINI against the center’s recommendations, supplemented by evaluating the AI’s performance using the QAMAI and AIPI questionnaires. Results: The results in 10 cases of major maxillofacial trauma indicated moderate agreement rates between LLM recommendations and the referral center, with some variances in the suggestion of appropriate examinations (70% ChatGPT and 50% GEMINI) and treatment plans (60% ChatGPT and 45% GEMINI). Notably, the study found no statistically significant differences in several areas of the questionnaires, except in the diagnosis accuracy (GEMINI: 3.30, ChatGPT: 2.30; p = 0.032) and relevance of the recommendations (GEMINI: 2.90, ChatGPT: 3.50; p = 0.021). A Spearman correlation analysis highlighted significant correlations within the two questionnaires, specifically between the QAMAI total score and AIPI treatment scores (rho = 0.767, p = 0.010). Conclusions: This exploratory investigation underscores the potential of LLMs in enhancing clinical decision making for maxillofacial trauma cases, indicating a need for further research to refine their application in healthcare settings.

Several bathyal cold-water coral provinces, characterized by a lush growth of habitat-forming scleractinians, have been recognized in the Mediterranean Sea. However, the search for this biogenic habitat only marginally targeted the Italian coast of the Ligurian Sea (NW Mediterranean basin) despite historical and a few recent local studies in the region reporting the presence of corals. This study used bathymetry maps, side-scan sonar profiles, historical charts, and trawling routes to identify sites that could potentially host coral habitats in the eastern sector of the Ligurian Sea. Remotely operated vehicle video footage from various projects (2015-2021, 20 dives) was then used to characterize four sub-areas (Genoa Plateau, Portofino, Deiva Marina, and Monterosso) where corals were detected between 450 m and 750 m depth. Radiocarbon dating was used to trace back the geological history of the coral structures. A small coral mound, impacted by trawling activities, was found on the Genoa Plateau, while four massive coral structures were found in the other sub-areas, mainly located in a morphologically complex and highly energetic canyon region. High levels of megafaunal biodiversity, including rarely reported alcyonaceans as Placogorgia coronata, were observed together with moderate fishing impact. Overall, the identified coral areas potentially account for 9 km2 of both subfossil mounds (as old as 13300 years BP), dominated by Desmophyllum pertusum, and living reefs, dominated by Madrepora oculata, the latter representing up to 23% of the substrate coverage. The few living colonies of D. pertusum in the area represent the first documented records for the Ligurian Sea. These data support the presence of a distinct eastern Ligurian cold-water coral province.

This paper presents an overview of the history of the research in deep water archaeology in Italy and the recent activities carried out by Fondazione Azionemare, in collaboration with the Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici of the Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Through a preliminary presentation of some shipwrecks dated to the Roman period, discovered by the Fondazione Azionemare and investigated, thanks also to photogrammetry, with the archaeologists of the Venetian university, this article analyses the characteristics and the potentialities of these contexts, which present an excellent level of conservation.

In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of the IRS 17 filament within the intermediate-mass protocluster IRAS 08448-4343 (of ∼10 ^3 L _⊙ ), using ALMA data from the ATOMS 3 mm and QUARKS 1.3 mm surveys. The IRS 17 filament, which spans ∼54,000 au (0.26 pc) in length and ∼4000 au (0.02 pc) in width, exhibits a complex, multicomponent velocity field and harbors hierarchical substructures. These substructures include three bundles of seven velocity-coherent fibers and 29 dense ( n ∼ 10 ^8 cm ^−3 ) condensations. The fibers have a median length of ∼4500 au and a median width of ∼1400 au. Among these fibers, four are identified as “fertile,” each hosting at least three dense condensations, which are regarded as the “seeds” of star formation. While the detected cores are randomly spaced within the IRS 17 filament based on the 3 mm dust continuum image, periodic spacing (∼1600 au) of condensations is observed in the fertile fibers according to the 1.3 mm dust map, consistent with the predictions of linear isothermal cylinder fragmentation models. These findings underscore the crucial role of fibers in star formation and suggest a hierarchical fragmentation process that extends from the filament to the fibers and, ultimately, to the smallest-scale condensations.

We study the astrochemical diagnostics of the isolated massive protostar G28.20-0.05. We analyze data from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array 1.3 mm observations with a resolution of 0.″2 (∼1000 au). We detect emission from a wealth of species, including oxygen-bearing (e.g., H _2 CO, CH _3 OH, CH _3 OCH _3 ), sulfur-bearing (SO _2 , H _2 S), and nitrogen-bearing (e.g., HNCO, NH _2 CHO, C _2 H _3 CN, C _2 H _5 CN) molecules. We discuss their spatial distributions, physical conditions, correlation between different species, and possible chemical origins. In the central region near the protostar, we identify three hot molecular cores (HMCs). HMC1 is part of a millimeter continuum ring-like structure, is closest in projection to the protostar, has the highest temperature of ∼300 K, and shows the most line-rich spectra. HMC2 is on the other side of the ring, has a temperature of ∼250 K, and is of intermediate chemical complexity. HMC3 is further away, ∼3000 au in projection, cooler (∼70 K), and is the least line-rich. The three HMCs have similar mass surface densities (∼10 g cm ^−2 ), number densities ( n _H ∼ 10 ^9 cm ^−3 ), and masses of a few solar masses. The total gas mass in the cores and in the region out to 3000 au is ∼25 M _⊙ , which is comparable to that of the central protostar. Based on spatial distributions of peak line intensities as a function of excitation energy, we infer that the HMCs are externally heated by the protostar. We estimate column densities and abundances of the detected species and discuss the implications for hot core astrochemistry.

Several studies have shown that emotions are asymmetrically represented in the human brain and have proposed three main models (the ‘right hemisphere hypothesis’, the ‘approach-withdrawal hypothesis’ and the ‘valence hypothesis’) that give different accounts of this emotional laterality. Furthermore, in recent years, many investigations have suggested that a similar emotional laterality may also exist in different animal taxa. However, results of a previous systematic review of emotional laterality in non-human primates have shown that some of these studies might be criticized from the methodological point of view and support only in part the hypothesis of a continuum in emotional laterality across vertebrates. The aim of the present review therefore consisted in trying to expand this survey to other cognitively developed and highly social mammals, focusing attention on mainly visual aspects of emotional laterality, in studies conducted on the animal categories of horses, elephants, dolphins and whales. The 35 studies included in the review took into account three aspects of mainly visual emotional laterality, namely: (a) visual asymmetries for positive/familiar vs. negative/novel stimuli; (b) lateral position preference in mother–offspring or other affiliative interactions; (c) lateral position preference in antagonistic interactions. In agreement with data obtained from human studies that have evaluated comprehension or expression of emotions at the facial or vocal level, these results suggest that a general but graded right-hemisphere prevalence in the processing of emotions can be found at the visual level in cognitively developed non-primate social mammals. Some methodological problems and some implications of these results for human psychopathology are briefly discussed.

We report high angular resolution observations, made with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array in band 6, of high excitation molecular lines of ${\mathrm{CH}}_{3}\mathrm{CN}$ and SO _2 and of the H29 α radio recombination line toward the G345.0061+01.794 B HC H ii region in order to investigate the physical and kinematical characteristics of its surroundings. Emission was detected in all observed components of the J = 14 →13 rotational ladder of ${\mathrm{CH}}_{3}\mathrm{CN}$ and in the 30 _4,26 –30 _3,27 , and 32 _4,28 –32 _3,29 lines of SO _2 . The peak of the velocity-integrated molecular emission is located ∼0.″4 northwest of the peak of the continuum emission. The first-order moment images and channel maps show a velocity gradient of 1.1 km s ^−1 arcsec ^−1 across the source and a distinctive spot of blueshifted emission toward the peak of the zero-order moment. The rotational temperature is found to decrease from 252±24 K at the peak position to 166±16 K at its edge, indicating that our molecular observations are probing a hot molecular core that is internally excited. The emission in the H29 α line arises from a region of 0.″65 in size, where its peak coincides with that of the dust continuum. We model the kinematical characteristics of the “central blue spot” feature as due to infalling motions, suggesting a central mass of 172.8±8.8 M _⊙ . Our observations indicate that this HC H ii region is surrounded by a compact structure of hot molecular gas, which is rotating and infalling toward a central mass, that is most likely confining the ionized region. The observed scenario is reminiscent of a “butterfly pattern” with an approximately edge-on torus and ionized gas roughly parallel to its rotation axis.

The dataset of spectroscopic analysis performed on starting materials, intermediates, and products relating to the synthesis of Hedione are hereby presented. The data were acquired in Durham university during the period between October 2020 and September 2021 for the development of a preparative method to Dehydrohedione. The latter is a key intermediate for the synthesis of cis-Hedione, an important fragrance ingredient. Proton, Carbon-13, and Fluorine-19 Nuclear magnetic resonance of the compounds were recorded employing a Varian 600 MHz, and a Bruker Avance-400 instrument. The IR spectra were recorded in a Perkin Elmer Spectrum Two UATR Two FT-IR and the accurate mass employing a Waters QtoF premier as mass spectrometer.

This review aimed to evaluate whether the association between ‘anosognosia for hemiplegia’ and lesions of the right hemisphere points to a special self-awareness role of the right side of the brain, or could instead be due to a working mode typical of the right hemisphere. This latter viewpoint is consistent with a recently proposed model of human brain asymmetries that assumes that language lateralization in the left hemisphere might have increased the left hemisphere’s level of consciousness and intentionality in comparison with the right hemisphere’s less conscious and more automatic functioning. To assess these alternatives, I tried to ascertain whether anosognosia is greater for left-sided hemiplegia than for other disorders provoked by right brain lesions, or whether unawareness prevails in tasks more clearly related to the disruption of the right hemisphere’s more automatic (and less conscious) functioning. Data consistent with the first alternative would support the existence of a specific link between anosognosia for hemiplegia and self-awareness, whereas data supporting the second option would confirm the model linking anosognosia to a poorly conscious working mode typical of the right hemisphere. Analysis results showed that the incidence of anosognosia of the highly automatic syndrome of unilateral neglect was greater than that concerning the unawareness of left hemiplegia, suggesting that anosognosia for left-sided hemiplegia might be due to the poorly conscious working mode typical of the right hemisphere.

The aim of this study was to shed light on the neural substrate of conceptual representations starting from the construct of higher-order convergence zones and trying to evaluate the unitary or non-unitary nature of this construct. We used the ‘Thematic and Taxonomic Semantic (TTS) task’ to investigate (a) the neural substrate of stimuli belonging to biological and artifact categories, (b) the format of stimuli presentation, i.e., verbal or pictorial, and (c) the relation between stimuli, i.e., categorial or contextual. We administered anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to different brain structures during the execution of the TTS task. Twenty healthy participants were enrolled and divided into two groups, one investigating the role of the anterior temporal lobes (ATL) and the other the temporo-parietal junctions (TPJ). Each participant underwent three sessions of stimulation to facilitate a control condition and to investigate the role of both hemispheres. Results showed that ATL stimulation influenced all conceptual representations in relation to the format of presentation (i.e., left-verbal and right-pictorial). Moreover, ATL stimulation modulated living categories and taxonomic relations specifically, whereas TPJ stimulation did not influence semantic task performances.

Background: This overview aimed to characterize the type, development, and use of haptic technologies for maxillofacial surgical purposes. The work aim is to summarize and evaluate current advantages, drawbacks, and design choices of presented technologies for each field of application in order to address and promote future research as well as to provide a global view of the issue. Methods: Relevant manuscripts were searched electronically through Scopus, MEDLINE/PubMed, and Cochrane Library databases until 1 November 2022. Results: After analyzing the available literature, 31 articles regarding tactile sensors and interfaces, sensorized tools, haptic technologies, and integrated platforms in oral and maxillofacial surgery have been included. Moreover, a quality rating is provided for each article following appropriate evaluation metrics. Discussion: Many efforts have been made to overcome the technological limits of computed assistant diagnosis, surgery, and teaching. Nonetheless, a research gap is evident between dental/maxillofacial surgery and other specialties such as endovascular, laparoscopic, and microsurgery; especially for what concerns electrical and optical-based sensors for instrumented tools and sensorized tools for contact forces detection. The application of existing technologies is mainly focused on digital simulation purposes, and the integration into Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS) is far from being widely actuated. Virtual reality, increasingly adopted in various fields of surgery (e.g., sino-nasal, traumatology, implantology) showed interesting results and has the potential to revolutionize teaching and learning. A major concern regarding the actual state of the art is the absence of randomized control trials and the prevalence of case reports, retrospective cohorts, and experimental studies. Nonetheless, as the research is fast growing, we can expect to see many developments be incorporated into maxillofacial surgery practice, after adequate evaluation by the scientific community.

Due to their intrinsic physical properties, which includes being able to perform as volatile liquids at room and biological temperatures, fragrance ingredients/intermediates make ideal candidates for continuous-flow manufacturing. This review highlights the potential crossover between a multibillion dollar industry and the flourishing sub-field of flow chemistry evolving within the discipline of organic synthesis. This is illustrated through selected examples of industrially important transformations specific to the fragrances and flavours industry and by highlighting the advantages of conducting these transformations by using a flow approach. This review is designed to be a compendium of techniques and apparatus already published in the chemical and engineering literature which would constitute a known solution or inspiration for commonly encountered procedures in the manufacture of fragrance and flavour chemicals.

En este artículo presentamos resultados de un proyecto de investigación financiado que buscó indagar las experiencias juveniles de construcción de reconocimiento social en la periferia urbana de la ciudad de Córdoba, Argentina. Trabajamos a partir de la construcción de 19 relatos de vida desde un enfoque biográfico narrativo. En la comparación de casos emergieron varios relatos en los que los narradores referían a vicisitudes biográficas superadas, relacionadas con la incursión en actividades delictivas o consumos problemáticos durante la adolescencia. En esta presentación abordamos los modos en que se construye el self del narrador en los relatos de dichas circunstancias. El análisis de los recursos retóricos empleados permite apreciar algunos modos a través de los cuales una matriz individualista y adultocéntrica se articula a la carrera moral de estos jóvenes produciendo un control narrativo sobre los modos de construcción de la identidad en los relatos que, en nuestra interpretación, remiten a una dimensión psicosocial de la vulnerabilidad.

Abstract Background The aim is to describe a new arthroscopically assisted Latarjet technique. Methods We evaluated the clinical and radiological findings of 60 patients with chronic recurrent anterior gleno-humeral instability who underwent, between September 2013 and November 2014, an arthroscopically-assisted Latarjet procedure with double round endobutton fixation. Inclusion criteria were: chronic anterior recurrent instability, Instability Severity Index Score (ISIS) greater than three points, a glenoid bone defect > 15% or a Hill Sachs lesion with concomitant glenoid bone defect > 10%. During surgery the joint capsule and the anterior glenoid labrum were detached. Two drill tunnels perpendicular to the neck of the glenoid were made through a guide. An accessible pilot hole through the glenoid was created to allows the passage of guidewires for coracoid guidance and final fixation onto the anterior glenoid. Through a restricted deltopectoral access a coracoid osteotomy was made. Finally, the graft was prepared, inserted and secured using half-stitches. Results The mean follow-up was 32.5 months (range 24–32 months). At a mean follow-up, 56 of the 60 subjects claimed a stable shoulder without postoperative complaints, two (3.3%) had an anterior dislocation after new traumatic injury, and two (3.3%) complained of subjective instability. At the latest follow-up, four subjects complained of painful recurrent anterior instability during abduction-external rotation with apprehension. At 1 year, the graft had migrated in one patient (1.7%) and judged not healed and high positioned in another patient (1.7%). Moreover, a glenoid bony gain of 26.3% was recorded. At the latest follow-up, three patients had grade 1 according to Samilson and Prieto classification asymptomatic degenerative changes. Nerve injuries and infections were not detected. None of the 60 patients underwent revision surgery. Healing rate of the graft was 96.7%. Conclusions This technique of arthroscopically assisted Latarjet combines mini-open and arthroscopic approach for improving the precision of the bony tunnels in the glenoid and coracoid placement, minimizing any potential risk of neurologic complications. It can be an option in subjects with anterior gleno-humeral instability and glenoid bone defect. Further studies should be performed to confirm our preliminary results. En este artículo, presentamos resultados de una línea de investigación centrada en el análisis de trayectorias educativas y procesos de accesibilidad a la escuela secundaria de jóvenes de sectores vulnerabilizados de la ciudad de Córdoba. Entendiendo que el análisis y evaluación de lineamientos referidos a la accesibilidad educativa durante la pandemia debe contemplar especialmente las miradas, experiencias y significaciones de su población destinataria, analizamos un corpus de entrevistas a jóvenes realizadas en una escuela secundaria durante mayo de 2021. Nuestros hallazgos señalan la centralidad que para las y los jóvenes adquieren las acciones hospitalarias desplegadas por agentes escolares y su papel clave en el sostenimiento de su escolarización. Sin embargo, también advertimos algunas enunciaciones marginales posicionándose críticamente respecto de calidad de los aprendizajes y estrategias implementadas, aportando elementos significativos para reflexionar acerca de la continuidad pedagógica en pandemia en el marco de un sistema educativo fragmentado.

Introduction Major haemorrhage after injury is the leading cause of preventable death for trauma patients. Recent advancements in trauma care suggest damage control resuscitation (DCR) should start in the prehospital phase following major trauma. In Italy, Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) assist the most complex injuries and deliver the most advanced interventions including DCR. The effect size of DCR delivered prehospitally on survival remains however unclear.Methods and analysis This is an investigator-initiated, large, national, prospective, observational cohort study aiming to recruit >500 patients in haemorrhagic shock after major trauma. We aim at describing the current practice of hypotensive trauma management as well as propose the creation of a national registry of patients with haemorrhagic shock. Primary objective: the exploration of the effect size of the variation in clinical practice on the mortality of hypotensive trauma patients. The primary outcome measure will be 24 hours, 7-day and 30-day mortality. Secondary outcomes include: association of prehospital factors and survival from injury to hospital admission, hospital length of stay, prehospital and in-hospital complications, hospital outcomes; use of prehospital ultrasound; association of prehospital factors and volume of first 24-hours blood product administration and evaluation of the prevalence of use, appropriateness, haemodynamic, metabolic and effects on mortality of prehospital blood transfusions. Background: Drug repurposing is an alternative strategy to traditional drug discovery that aims at predicting new uses for already existing drugs or clinical candidates. Drug repurposing has many advantages over traditional drug development, such as reduced attrition rates, time and costs. This is especially the case considering that most drugs investigated for repurposing have already been assessed for their safety in clinical trials. Repurposing campaigns can also be designed for libraries of already synthesized molecules at different levels of biological experimentation, from null to in vitro and in vivo. Such an extension of the “repurposing” concept is expected to provide significant advantages for the identification of novel drugs, as the synthetic accessibility of the desired compounds is often one of the limiting factors in the traditional drug discovery pipeline. Methods: In this work, we performed a computational repurposing campaign on a library of previously synthesized oxindole-based compounds, in order to identify potential new targets for this versatile scaffold. To this aim, ligand-based approaches were firstly applied to evaluate the similarity degree of the investigated compound library, with respect to ligands extracted from the DrugBank, Protein Data Bank (PDB) and ChEMBL databases. In particular, the 2D fingerprint-based and 3D shape-based similarity profiles were evaluated and compared for the oxindole derivates. Results: The analyses predicted a set of potential candidate targets for repurposing, some of them emerging by consensus of different computational analyses. One of the identified targets, i.e., the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2) kinase, was further investigated by means of docking calculations, followed by biological testing of one candidate. Conclusions: While the compound did not show potent inhibitory activity towards VEGFR-2, the study highlighted several other possibilities of therapeutically relevant targets that may be worth of consideration for drug repurposing.

Semantic Variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia (svPPA) has often been considered as a loss of knowledge stored in semantic memory, but might also be due to a general disruption of mechanisms allowing the acquisition, storage, and retrieval of semantic memories. In order to assess any parallelism in svPPA patients between loss of semantic knowledge and inability to acquire new semantic information, we administered a battery of semantic learning tasks to healthy individuals and svPPA patients, where they were requested to learn new conceptual representations and new word forms, and to associate the former with the latter. A strong relation was found between loss of semantic knowledge and disruption of semantic learning: (a) patients with severe svPPA had the lowest scores in the semantic learning tasks; (b) significant correlations were found between scores obtained in semantic learning tasks and scores obtained in semantic memory disorders in svPPA patients.

Background: Experimental investigations and clinical observations have shown that not only faces but also voices are predominantly processed by the right hemisphere. Moreover, right brain-damaged patients show more difficulties with voice than with face recognition. Finally, healthy subjects undergoing right temporal anodal stimulation improve their voice but not their face recognition. This asymmetry between face and voice recognition in the right hemisphere could be due to the greater complexity of voice processing. Methods: To further investigate this issue, we tested voice and name recognition in twelve congenitally blind people. Results: The results showed a complete overlap between the components of voice recognition impaired in patients with right temporal damage and those improved in congenitally blind people. Congenitally blind subjects, indeed, scored significantly better than control sighted individuals in voice discrimination and produced fewer false alarms on familiarity judgement of famous voices, corresponding to tests selectively impaired in patients with right temporal lesions. Conclusions: We suggest that task difficulty is a factor that impacts on the degree of its lateralization.

Background: The technique of socket preservation after tooth extraction allows for less volumetric decrease after tooth extraction. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate differences between alveolar socket preservation performed with deproteinized bovine bone graft and autologous particulate bone graft taken from the mandibular ramus. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study enrolled a total of 21 consecutive patients. A total of 11 patients underwent socket preservation with deproteinized bovine bone graft and collagen matrix (group A), and 10 patients underwent socket preservation performed with particulate autologous bone taken from the mandibular ramus and collagen matrix (group B). All patients received cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) before socket preservation and after four months. Alveolar bone width (ABW) values and alveolar bone height (ABH) values were measured at the first and second CBCT, and the reduction of the values in the two groups was compared. Statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test for independent variables, and p values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between ABW reduction of group A and ABW reduction of group B (t-test value p = 0.28). There were no statistically significant differences between ABH reduction of group A and ABH reduction of group B (t-test value p = 0.10). Conclusions: In this retrospective study, no statistical differences were found between the group that received autologous particulate bone compared to the group that received deproteinized bovine bone in socket preservation.

A passive seismic experiment is carried out at the non-volcanic highly degassing site of Mefite d’Ansanto located at the northern tip of the Irpinia region (southern Italy), where the 1980 MS 6.9 destructive earthquake occurred. Between 2020 and 2021, background seismic noise was recorded by deploying a broadband seismic station and a seismic array composed of seven 1 Hz three-component sensors. Using two different array configurations, we were allowed to explore in detail the 1–20 Hz frequency band of the seismic noise wavefield as well as Rayleigh wave phase velocities in the 400–800 m/s range. Spectral analyses and array techniques were applied to one year of data showing that the frequency content of the signal is very stable in time. High frequency peaks are likely linked to the emission source, whereas at low frequencies seismic noise is clearly correlated to meteorological parameters. The results of this study show that small aperture seismic arrays probe the subsurface of tectonic CO2-rich emission areas and contribute to the understanding of the link between fluid circulation and seismogenesis in seismically active regions.

There is growing evidence that high-mass star formation and hub-filament systems (HFS) are intricately linked. The gas kinematics along the filaments and the forming high-mass star(s) in the central hub are in excellent agreement with the new generation of global hierarchical high-mass star formation models. In this paper, we present an observational investigation of a typical HFS cloud, G310.142+0.758 (G310 hereafter), which reveals unambiguous evidence of mass inflow from the cloud scale via the filaments onto the forming protostar(s) at the hub conforming with the model predictions. Continuum and molecular line data from the ATOMS and MALT90 surveys that cover different spatial scales are used. Three filaments (with a total mass of 5.7 ± 1.1 × 10 ^3 M _⊙ ) are identified converging toward the central hub region where several signposts of high-mass star formation have been observed. The hub region contains a massive clump (1280 ± 260 M _⊙ ) harboring a central massive core. Additionally, five outflow lobes are associated with the central massive core implying a forming cluster. The observed large-scale, smooth, and coherent velocity gradients from the cloud down to the core scale, and the signatures of infall motion seen in the central massive clump and core, clearly unveil a nearly continuous, multi-scale mass accretion/transfer process at a similar mass infall rate of ∼10 ^−3 M _⊙ yr ^−1 over all scales, feeding the central forming high-mass protostar(s) in the G310 HFS cloud.

The initial conditions found in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) provide insights on how high-mass stars and stellar clusters form. We have conducted high-angular resolution and high-sensitivity observations toward thirty-nine massive IRDC clumps, which have been mosaicked using the 12 and 7 m arrays from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The targets are 70 μ m dark massive (220–4900 M _⊙ ), dense (>10 ^4 cm ^−3 ), and cold (∼10–20 K) clumps located at distances between 2 and 6 kpc. We identify an unprecedented number of 839 cores, with masses between 0.05 and 81 M _⊙ using 1.3 mm dust continuum emission. About 55% of the cores are low-mass (

Atrophic edentulous mandible fractures are a challenge for maxillo-facial surgeons because of low vascularization, low bone regeneration, and lack of occlusion. Whereas occlusion is the main guide in the reduction of mandibular fractures, the aim of our study is to show the advantages of using virtual surgical planning (VSP) in surgery when the occlusal guide is absent. This work is a prospective study that shows the in-house digital workflow for the management of these fractures in the Maxillo-Facial Surgery Unit of Federico II University Hospital of Naples. Four patients who satisfied the criteria were included in the study. For each patient, the same defined CAD/CAM-based was applied. The workflow followed four steps: (1) bone segmentation and virtual reduction of fracture fragments; (2) three-dimensional printing of virtually reduced mandible and modelling of 2.4 reconstruction plate on printed resin model; (3) surgery aided by the pre-formed plate; (4) digital and clinical outcomes analysis. In the last step, a distance colour map was conducted to compare the virtual planning and postoperative CT outcome. In all cases, the discrepancies values between the two images were lower than 1.5 mm, and good clinical outcomes in terms of facial symmetry, absence of sensory disturbance, and possibility of prosthetic rehabilitation were obtained. In conclusion, the VSP, with our in-house workflow brings benefits in the management of atrophic edentulous mandible fractures in terms of the high accuracy of bone repositioning.

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Survey of Star Formation and Evolution in Massive Protoclusters with Blue Profiles (ASSEMBLE) aims to investigate the process of mass assembly and its connection to high-mass star formation theories in protoclusters in a dynamic view. We observed 11 massive ( M _clump ≳ 10 ^3 M _⊙ ), luminous ( L _bol ≳ 10 ^4 L _⊙ ), and blue-profile (infall signature) clumps by ALMA with resolution of ∼2200–5500 au (median value of 3500 au) at 350 GHz (870 μ m). We identified 248 dense cores, including 106 cores showing protostellar signatures and 142 prestellar core candidates. Compared to early stage infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) by ASHES, the core mass and surface density within the ASSEMBLE clumps exhibited a significant increment, suggesting concurrent core accretion during the evolution of the clumps. The maximum mass of prestellar cores was found to be 2 times larger than that in IRDCs, indicating that evolved protoclusters have the potential to harbor massive prestellar cores. The mass relation between clumps and their most massive core (MMCs) is observed in ASSEMBLE but not in IRDCs, which is suggested to be regulated by multiscale mass accretion. The mass correlation between the core clusters and their MMCs has a steeper slope compared to that observed in stellar clusters, which can be due to fragmentation of the MMC and stellar multiplicity. We observe a decrease in core separation and an increase in central concentration as protoclusters evolve. We confirm primordial mass segregation in the ASSEMBLE protoclusters, possibly resulting from gravitational concentration and/or gas accretion.
