Handgrip strength is a valid and clinically practicable test, for screening early-onset sarcopenia during hospitalisation.Handgrip strength cut-off values of 18 kg in women and 25.5 kg in men gave 92.9% and 78.6% sensitivity, respectively.One-third of patients admitted to acute care wards have sarcopenia.

Abstract

Introduction The aim of this study was to create a new version of the French GTS-QOL adapted to adolescents with GTS aged 12–16 years (GTS-QOL-French-Ado) and to evaluate its psychometric properties. Methods We assessed the psychometric properties of the GTS-QOL-French-Ado in 84 adolescents (mean age 13.6 years, standard deviation 1.2) in terms of factor structure, internal consistency, reliability and convergent validity with the Child Depression Inventory (CDI), the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC), the Motor tic, Obsessions and compulsions, Vocal tic Evaluation Survey (MOVES) and the French “Vécu et Santé Perçue de l’Adolescent” (VSP-A), a generic self-administered measure of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adolescents. Results Exploratory factor analysis of the GTS-QOL-French-Ado resulted in a 5-factor solution. The GTS-QOL-French-Ado demonstrated good acceptability with missing values per subscale ranging from 0% to 1.2%, good internal consistency for four of the five subscales with Cronbach’s alpha ranging from 0.56 to 0.87 and good test–retest reliability with intraclass correlation coefficients ranging from 0.74 (95% CI: 0.52–0.86) to 0.82 (95% CI: 0.66–0.91). Convergent validity was supported by correlations with CDI, MASC, MOVES, VSP-A and clinical variables. Discussion The GTS-QOL-French-Ado is the first disease-specific HRQoL tool for French-speaking adolescents with GTS aged 12–16 years, and shows good psychometric properties. Further psychometric testing on responsiveness to change would be of great interest.

Abstract

Impaired emotional abilities (higher scores of alexithymia and lower levels of emotional awareness) were found in patients with skin-restricted lupus, warranting examination of the relationship between these abilities and the evolution of skin-restricted lupus, using longitudinal data. A total of 75 consecutive outpatients with skin-restricted lupus were recruited and assessed by a dermatologist and a psychiatrist every 6 months over a period of 2.5 years. Alexithymia and emotional awareness were evaluated with the French versions of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS). During follow-up, good stability of the LEAS scores was observed, whereas TAS-20 scores varied; those variations were positively associated both with lupus duration and current psychiatric and personality disorders, but not with lupus remission. Such findings regarding 2 complementary aspects of emotional functioning are of direct interest for the management of patients with skin-restricted lupus.

Abstract

Introduction: The Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome–Quality of Life Scale (GTS-QOL) is a self-rated disease-specific questionnaire to assess health-related quality of life of subjects with GTS. Our aim was to perform the cross-cultural adaptation of the GTS-QOL into French and to assess its psychometric properties. Methods: The GTS-QOL was cross-culturally adapted by conducting forward and backward translations, following international guidelines. The psychometric properties of the GTS-QOL-French were assessed in 109 participants aged 16 years and above with regard to factor structure, internal consistency, reliability and convergent validity with the MOVES (Motor tic, Obsessions and compulsions, Vocal tic Evaluation Survey) and the WHOQOL-BREF (World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief). Results: Exploratory factor analysis of the GTS-QOL-French resulted in a 6-factor solution and did not replicate the original structure in four subscales. The results showed good acceptability (missing values per subscale ranging from 0% to 0.9%), good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ranging from 0.68 to 0.94) and good test–retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients ranging from 0.70 to 0.81). Convergent validity with the MOVES and WHOQOL-BREF scales showed high correlations. Discussion: Our study provides evidence of the good psychometric properties of the GTS-QOL-French. The cross-cultural adaptation and validation of this specific instrument will make it possible to assess health-related quality of life in French-speaking subjects with GTS. Abstract

International audience; Objective. Describing the level and factors affecting the physical activity practices of knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients.Design. Propective epidemiological study.Patients and Methods. 548 knee osteoarthritis patients were interviewed via self-administered anonymous questionnaires. Main Outcome Measurement The main outcome was physical activity level, evaluated by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (short version) (IPAQ). Secondary outcomes included sociodemographic and clinical data, comorbidities, as well as barriers to and facilitators of practicing regular physical activity evaluated over 24 specific elements. Results. The study population’s mean age was 67.6 years (SD 7.9), including 73.9% women and 30.9% obese individuals with a mean body mass index (BMI) of 28.2 kg/m2 (SD 5.7). Multi-joint osteoarthritis (OA) affected 92%, 71.6% of whom had comorbidities. The mean Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) pain intensity score was 4.5/10 (SD 2.5), 51.4% better than the Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS). Mean WOMAC function was 36.6/100 (SD 20.7), 57.5% better than PASS; 67% of patients used analgesics, half of them at least once a week. According to the IPAQ, 42.6% of patients reported high activity levels, 38.6% moderate, 18.8% low, the median IPAQ total activity score was 2628 metabolic equivalent of task (MET)-min/week and time spent sitting was 257.1 min/week. Only a third of patients received non-pharmacological treatment corresponding to the latest recommendations. Variables significantly related to inactive/minimally active physical activity levels were BMI (p=0.0294), gender (p=0.0008), and biomedical barriers, related to self-efficacy (p=0.0118).Conclusions. The OA study population was less active, more sedentary, and had more comorbidities and more barriers to physical activity practice than the overall population. This study could help better adapt health care measures, while taking into account patients’ overall status, including symptoms of OA pathology and comorbidities, providing tailored educational strategies with respect to physical activity.

Abstract

Oil extraction from the kernels of Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels (Sapotaceae), an endemic tree of Morocco, produces argan press-cake (APC) used as a shampoo and to treat sprains, scabies, and for healing wounds. We have previously reported that argan oil has antimelanogenesis effect. Here, we determined if the by-product, APC, has melanogenesis regulatory effect using B16 murine melanoma cells. The effect of APC ethanol extract on cell proliferation and melanin content of B16 cells were measured, and to elucidate the mechanism involved, the expression level of melanogenic enzymes tyrosinase (TYR), dopachrome tautomerase (DCT), and tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TRP1) were determined and mRNA expression level of microphthalmia- associated transcription factor (Mitf) and Tyr genes were quantified. APC ethanol extract showed a significant melanin biosynthesis inhibitory effect on B16 cells in a time-dependent manner without cytotoxicity, which could be due to the decreased expression of TYR, TRP1, and DCT in a time-dependent manner. APC extract down regulated Mitf and Tyr. Decreased TRP1 and DCT levels could be due to post-translational modifications. These results suggest that APC extract may be used as a new source of natural whitening products and may be introduced as an important pharmacological agent for the treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders.

42. The French version of the Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome Quality of Life Scale for adolescents (GTS-QOL-French-Ado): Adaptation and psychometric evaluation.

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study was to create a new version of the French GTS-QOL adapted to adolescents with GTS aged 12-16 years (GTS-QOL-French-Ado) and to evaluate its psychometric properties., Methods: We assessed the psychometric properties of the GTS-QOL-French-Ado in 84 adolescents (mean age 13.6 years, standard deviation 1.2) in terms of factor structure, internal consistency, reliability and convergent validity with the Child Depression Inventory (CDI), the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC), the Motor tic, Obsessions and compulsions, Vocal tic Evaluation Survey (MOVES) and the French "Vécu et Santé Perçue de l'Adolescent" (VSP-A), a generic self-administered measure of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adolescents., Results: Exploratory factor analysis of the GTS-QOL-French-Ado resulted in a 5-factor solution. The GTS-QOL-French-Ado demonstrated good acceptability with missing values per subscale ranging from 0% to 1.2%, good internal consistency for four of the five subscales with Cronbach's alpha ranging from 0.56 to 0.87 and good test-retest reliability with intraclass correlation coefficients ranging from 0.74 (95% CI: 0.52-0.86) to 0.82 (95% CI: 0.66-0.91). Convergent validity was supported by correlations with CDI, MASC, MOVES, VSP-A and clinical variables., Discussion: The GTS-QOL-French-Ado is the first disease-specific HRQoL tool for French-speaking adolescents with GTS aged 12-16 years, and shows good psychometric properties.
