As an emerging class of materials with distinctive physicochemical properties, metallenes are deemed as efficient catalysts for energy-related electrocatalytic reactions. Engineering the lattice strain, electronic structure, crystallinity, and even surface porosity of metallene provides a great opportunity to further enhance its catalytic performance. Herein, we rationally developed a reconstruction strategy of Pd metallenes at atomic scale to generate a series of nonmetallic atom-intercalated Pd metallenes (M-Pdene, M = H, N, C) with lattice expansion and S-doped Pd metallene (S-Pdene) with an amorphous structure. The increasing demands of electronic devices and electric transportation necessitate lithium-ion batteries with simultaneous high energy and power capabilities. However, rate capabilities are often limited in high-loading electrodes due to the lengthy and tortuous ion transport paths with their electrochemical behaviors governed by complicated electrode architectures still elusive. Here, we report the electrode-level tortuosity engineering design enabling improved charge storage kinetics in high-energy electrodes. Both high areal capacity and high-rate capability can be achieved beyond the practical level of mass loadings in electrodes with vertically oriented architectures. The electrochemical properties in electrodes with various architectures were quantitatively investigated through correlating the characteristic time with tortuosity. The lithium-ion transport kinetics regulated by electrode architectures was further studied via combining the three-dimensional electrode architecture visualization and simulation. The tortuosity-controlled charge storage kinetics revealed in this study can be extended to general electrode systems and provide useful design consideration for next-generation high-energy/power batteries.

Aqueous aluminum metal batteries (AMBs) are regarded as one of the most sustainable energy storage systems among post-lithium-ion candidates, which is attributable to their highest theoretical volumetric capacity, inherent safe operation, and low cost. Yet, the development of aqueous AMBs is plagued by the incapable aluminum plating in an aqueous solution and severe parasitic reactions, which results in the limited discharge voltage, thus making the development of aqueous AMBs unsuccessful so far. Here, we demonstrate that amorphization is an effective strategy to tackle these critical issues of a metallic Al anode by shifting the reduction potential for Al deposition. The amorphous aluminum (a-Al) interfacial layer is triggered by an in situ lithium-ion alloying/dealloying process on a metallic Al substrate with low strength. Unveiled by experimental and theoretical investigations, the amorphous structure greatly lowers the Al nucleation energy barrier, which forces the Al deposition competitive to the electron-stealing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Simultaneously, the inhibited HER mitigates the passivation, promoting interfacial ion transfer kinetics and enabling steady aluminum plating/stripping for 800 h in the symmetric cell. The resultant multiple full cells using Al@a-Al anodes deliver approximately a 0.6 V increase in the discharge voltage plateau compared to that of bare Al-based cells, which far outperform all reported aqueous AMBs. In both symmetric cells and full cells, the excellent electrochemical performances are achieved in a noncorrosive, low-cost, and fluorine-free Al2(SO4)3 electrolyte, which is ecofriendly and can be easily adapted for sustainable large-scale applications. This work brings an intriguing picture of the design of metallic anodes for reversible and high-voltage AMBs. Synthesizing urea from nitrate and carbon dioxide through an electrocatalysis approach under ambient conditions is extraordinarily sustainable. However, this approach still lacks electrocatalysts developed with high catalytic efficiencies, which is a key challenge. Here, we report the high-efficiency electrocatalytic synthesis of urea using indium oxyhydroxide with oxygen vacancy defects, which enables selective C-N coupling toward standout electrocatalytic urea synthesis activity. Analysis by operando synchrotron radiation-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showcases that *CO2NH2 protonation is the potential-determining step for the overall urea formation process. As such, defect engineering is employed to lower the energy barrier for the protonation of the *CO2NH2 intermediate to accelerate urea synthesis. Consequently, the defect-engineered catalyst delivers a high Faradaic efficiency of 51.0%. In conjunction with an in-depth study on the catalytic mechanism, this design strategy may facilitate the exploration of advanced catalysts for electrochemical urea synthesis and other sustainable applications. Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity. Developing advanced electrode architectures through modifying active materials, conductive fillers, binders, and electrolytes as well as processing methods has drawn significant research interest. Due to the insufficient electrical conductivity of many active materials, adding conductive carbon fillers to composite electrodes provides the necessary electrical conductivity. The dimensionality effect among different conductive fillers has a significant impact on electrochemistry, which can be associated with morphological and chemical heterogeneities of electrodes. Here, synchrotron X-ray mosaic nanotomography and X-ray spectroscopy nanoimaging provided direct three-dimensional (3D) visualization and quantification capabilities to investigate the dimensionality effects of Super P (SP) and single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) fillers on the capacity retention of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC111). The results indicate that NMC/SWCNT electrodes, with a wrapping effect from the SWCNTs, exhibited more homogeneous particle size distributions, morphological changes, and chemical states than NMC/SP electrodes, without the wrapping effect. This work developed a framework of 3D quantification methods to study the capacity fading behavior associated with morphological and chemical heterogeneities and paved the way toward designing electrodes for high rate energy storage applications.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have aroused tremendous interest over the past decade, particularly in the community of energy and environment-related electrocatalysis. A rapidly growing number of recent publications have recognized it as a promising candidate with maximum atomic utilization, distinct activity, and selectivity in comparison to bulk catalysts and nanocatalysts. However, the complexity of localized coordination environments and the dispersion of isolated sites lead to significant difficulties when it comes to gaining insight into the intrinsic behavior of electrocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, the low metal loadings of most SACs make conventional ensemble measurements less likely to be accurate on the subnanoscale. Thus, it remains challenging to probe the activity and properties of individual atomic sites by available commercial instruments and analytical methods. In spite of this, continuing efforts have lately focused on the development of advanced measurement methodologies, which are very useful to the fundamental understanding of SACs. There have recently been a number of in situ/operando techniques applied to SACs, such as electron microscopy, spectroscopy, and other analysis methods, which support relevant functions to identify the active sites and reaction intermediates and to investigate the dynamic behavior of localized structures of the catalytic sites.This Account aims to present recent electrochemical probing techniques which can be used to identify single-atomic catalytic sites within solid supports. First, we describe the basic principles of molecular probe methods for the study and analysis of electrocatalytic site behavior. In particular, the in situ probing technique enabled by surface interrogation scanning electrochemical microscopy (SI-SECM) can measure the active site density and kinetic rate with high resolution. An alternative electrochemical probing technique is further demonstrated on the basis of single-entity electrochemistry, which allows the unique electrochemical imaging of the size and catalytic rate of single atoms, molecules, and clusters. The merits and limitations of different electrochemical techniques are then discussed, along with perspectives for future prospects. Apart from this, we further showcase the powerful capability of emerging electrochemical probing techniques for determining significant effects and properties of SACs for various electrocatalytic reactions, including oxygen reduction and evolution, hydrogen evolution, and nitrate reduction. Overall, electrochemical techniques with atomic resolution have greatly increased opportunities for observing, measuring, and understanding the surface and interface chemistry during energy conversion. In the future, it is anticipated that the development of electrochemical probing techniques will be advanced with innovative perspectives on the behavior and features of SACs. We hope that this Account can contribute in several ways to promoting the fundamental knowledge and technical progress of emerging electrochemical measurements for studying SACs.

As a member of graphene analogs, metallenes are a class of two-dimensional materials with atomic thickness and well-controlled surface atomic arrangement made of metals or alloys. When utilized as catalysts, metallenes exhibit distinctive physicochemical properties endowed from the under-coordinated metal atoms on the surface, making them highly competitive candidates for energy-related electrocatalysis and energy conversion systems. Significantly, their catalytic activity can be precisely tuned through the chemical modification of their surface and subsurface atoms for efficient catalyst engineering. This minireview summarizes the recent progress in the synthesis and characterization of metallenes, together with their use as electrocatalysts toward reactions for energy conversion. In the Synthesis section, we pay particular attention to the strategies designed to tune their exposed facets, composition, and surface strain, as well as the porosity/cavity, defects, and crystallinity on the surface. We then discuss the electrocatalytic properties of metallenes in terms of oxygen reduction, hydrogen evolution, alcohol and acid oxidation, carbon dioxide reduction, and nitrogen reduction reaction, with a small extension regarding photocatalysis. At the end, we offer perspectives on the challenges and opportunities with respect to the synthesis, characterization, modeling, and application of metallenes.

Electronic conduction in solid-polymer electrolytes is generally not desired, which causes leakage of electrons or energy loss, and the electronically conductive domains at electrode-electrolyte interfaces can lead to continuous decomposition of electrolytes and shorting issues. However, it is noticed in this work that in an insulating matrix, the conductive domains at certain aspects could also have positive effects on the electrolyte performance with proper control. This work evaluates the limitation and benefits of electronically conductive domains in a solid-polymer electrolyte system and discusses the approach to improve the electrolyte physicochemical properties with densified local electric field distribution, enhanced bulk dielectric property, and charge transfer. By deliberately introducing the conductive domains in a regular solid-polymer electrolyte, stable cycle life, low overpotential, and promising full cell performance could be achieved.

Sorbent-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) has emerged as a promising decentralized water-production technology to mitigate the freshwater crisis in arid areas. Hydrogels have been regarded as attractive sorbents due to their high water retention and tailorable polymer-water interactions. Yet, the kinetics of water sorption and desorption at low relative humidity (RH) shall be improved for their practical implementation. Here, hygroscopic microgels (HMGs) composed of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and hygroscopic salt are reported, which achieve a water uptake of ca. 0.5-0.8 g g

A thick electrode with high areal capacity is a straightforward approach to maximize the energy density of batteries, but the development of thick electrodes suffers from both fabrication challenges and electron/ion transport limitations. In this work, a low-tortuosity LiFePO4 (LFP) electrode with ultrahigh loadings of active materials and a highly efficient transport network was constructed by a facile and scalable templated phase inversion method. The instant solidification of polymers during phase inversion enables the fabrication of ultrathick yet robust electrodes. The open and aligned microchannels with interconnected porous walls provide direct and short ion transport pathways, while the encapsulation of active materials in the carbon framework offers a continuous pathway for electron transport. Benefiting from the structural advantages, the ultrathick bilayer LiFePO4 electrodes (up to 1.2 mm) demonstrate marked improvements in rate performance and cycling stability under high areal loadings (up to 100 mg cm-2). Simulation and operando structural characterization also reveal fast transport kinetics. Combined with the scalable fabrication, our proposed strategy presents an effective alternative for designing practical high energy/power density electrodes at low cost.

Multi-scale physics-based models, which have been parameterized and validated with discharge experiments, are optimized by varying porosity and mass loading to achieve maximum energy density. Although transport losses occur on both the electrode and particle scales, the electrode-scale optimal design is independent of the smaller scale properties. Electrode-scale properties such as tortuosity, electrolyte concentration, and Li-ion diffusion coefficient all impact optimal design. However, the impact can be generalized and the optimal results follow a general design rule that is captured in convenient correlations: ϵ = 0.13 log 10 ( k ϵ C r τ F D 0 c 0 ) and Q a = k Q / k ϵ C r τ / ( F D 0 c 0 ) , which provide guidelines for optimization of electrode architectures. The correlations are also in agreement with prior optimization results in the literature.

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are among the most promising grid-scale energy storage technologies. However, the development of RFBs with high round-trip efficiency, high rate capability, and long cycle life for practical applications is highly restricted by the lack of appropriate ion-conducting membranes. Promising RFB membranes should separate positive and negative species completely and conduct balancing ions smoothly. Specific systems must meet additional requirements, such as high chemical stability in corrosive electrolytes, good resistance to organic solvents in nonaqueous systems, and excellent mechanical strength and flexibility. These rigorous requirements put high demands on the membrane design, essentially the chemistry and microstructure associated with ion transport channels. In this Review, we summarize the design rationale of recently reported RFB membranes at the molecular level, with an emphasis on new chemistry, novel microstructures, and innovative fabrication strategies. Future challenges and potential research opportunities within this field are also discussed.
