1. Self-Assembled Chains and Solids of Dipolar Atoms in a Multilayer

Abstract

We predict that ultracold bosonic dipolar gases, confined within a multilayer geometry, may undergo self-assembling processes, leading to the formation of chain gases and solids. These dipolar chains, with dipoles aligned across different layers, emerge at low densities and resemble phases observed in liquid crystals, such as nematic and smectic phases. We calculate the phase diagram using quantum Monte Carlo methods, introducing a newly devised trial wave function designed for describing the chain gas, where dipoles from different layers form chains without in-plane long-range order. We find gas, solid, and chain phases, along with quantum phase transitions between these states. Specifically, we predict the existence of quantum phase transitions from gaseous to self-ordered phases, as the interlayer distance is decreased. Remarkably, in the self-organized phases, the mean interparticle distance can significantly exceed the characteristic length of the interaction potential, yielding solids and chain gases with densities several orders of magnitude lower than those of conventional quantum solids., Comment: Main text and Supplemental Material: 9 pages, 7 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2012.14545

2. Ultradilute quantum liquid of dipolar atoms in a bilayer

Abstract

We show that ultradilute quantum liquids can be formed with ultracold bosonic dipolar atoms in a bilayer geometry. Contrary to previous realizations of ultradilute liquids, there is no need for stabilizing the system with an additional repulsive short-range potential. The advantage of the proposed system is that dipolar interactions on their own are sufficient for creation of a self-bound state and no additional short-range potential is needed for the stabilization. We perform quantum Monte Carlo simulations and find a rich ground-state phase diagram that contains quantum phase transitions between liquid, solid, atomic gas, and molecular gas phases. The stabilization mechanism of the liquid phase is consistent with the microscopic scenario in which the effective dimer-dimer attraction is balanced by an effective three-dimer repulsion. The equilibrium density of the liquid, which is extremely small, can be controlled by the interlayer distance. From the equation of state, we extract the spinodal density, below which the homogeneous system breaks into droplets. 3. Quantum halo states in two-dimensional dipolar clusters

Abstract

A halo is an intrinsically quantum object defined as a bound state of a spatial size which extends deeply into the classically forbidden region. Previously, halos have been observed in bound states of two and less frequently of three atoms. Here, we propose a realization of halo states containing as many as six atoms. We report the binding energies, pair correlation functions, spatial distributions, and sizes of few-body clusters composed by bosonic dipolar atoms in a bilayer geometry. We find two very distinct halo structures, for large interlayer separation the halo structure is roughly symmetric and we discover an unusual highly anisotropic shape of halo states close to the unbinding threshold. Our results open avenues of using ultracold gases for the experimental realization of halos with the largest number of atoms ever predicted before., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

4. Quantum Monte Carlo study of few- and many-body Bose systems in one and two dimensions

Abstract

In this Thesis, we report a detailed study of the ground-state properties of a set of quantum few- and many-body systems in one and two dimensions with different types of interactions by using Quantum Monte Carlo methods. Nevertheless, the main focus of this work is the study of the ground-state properties of an ultracold Bose system with dipole-dipole interaction between the particles. We consider the cases where the bosons are confined to a bilayer and multilayer geometries, that consist of equally spaced two-dimensional layers. These layers can be experimentally realized by imposing tight confinement in one direction. We specifically address the study of new quantum phases, their properties, and transitions between them. 6. Few-body bound states of two-dimensional bosons

Abstract

We study clusters of the type A$_N$B$_M$ with $N\leq M\leq 3$ in a two-dimensional mixture of A and B bosons, with attractive AB and equally repulsive AA and BB interactions. In order to check universal aspects of the problem, we choose two very different models: dipolar bosons in a bilayer geometry and particles interacting via separable Gaussian potentials. We find that all the considered clusters are bound and that their energies are universal functions of the scattering lengths $a_{AB}$ and $a_{AA}=a_{BB}$, for sufficiently large attraction-to-repulsion ratios $a_{AB}/a_{BB}$. When $a_{AB}/a_{BB}$ decreases below $\approx 10$, the dimer-dimer interaction changes from attractive to repulsive and the population-balanced AABB and AAABBB clusters break into AB dimers. Calculating the AAABBB hexamer energy just below this threshold, we find an effective three-dimer repulsion which may have important implications for the many-body problem, particularly for observing liquid and supersolid states of dipolar dimers in the bilayer geometry. The population-imbalanced ABB trimer, ABBB tetramer, and AABBB pentamer remain bound beyond the dimer-dimer threshold. 7. One-dimensional three-boson problem with two- and three-body interactions

Abstract

We solve the three-boson problem with contact two- and three-body interactions in one dimension and analytically calculate the ground and excited trimer-state energies. Then, by using the diffusion Monte Carlo technique we calculate the binding energy of three dimers formed in a one-dimensional Bose-Bose or Fermi-Bose mixture with attractive interspecies and repulsive intraspecies interactions. Combining these results with our three-body analytics we extract the three-dimer scattering length close to the dimer-dimer zero crossing. In both considered cases the three-dimer interaction turns out to be repulsive. 8. Finite size effect on the specific heat of a Bose gas in multifilament cables

Abstract

The specific heat for an ideal Bose gas confined in semi-infinite multifilament cables is analyzed. We start with a Bose gas inside a semi-infinite tube of impenetrable walls and finite rectangular cross section. The internal filament structure is created by applying to the gas two, mutually perpendicular, Kronig-Penney delta-potentials along the tube cross section, while particles are free to move perpendicular to the cross section. The energy spectrum accessible to the particles is obtained and introduced into the grand potential to calculate the specific heat of the system as a function of temperature for different values of the periodic structure parameters such as: the cross section area, the wall impenetrability and the number of filaments. The specific heat as a function of temperature shows at least two maxima and one minimum. The main difference with respect to the infinite case is that the peak associated with the BE condensation becomes a smoothed maximum or in other words, there is not a jump in the specific heat derivative, whose temperature no longer represents a critical point.

Abstract

La hipercalcemia hipocalciúrica familiar (HHF) constituye una causa poco común de hipercalcemia. Su prevalencia se estima que es de 1:78.000 personas. Mostramos un caso con presentación atípica con confirmación mediante diagnóstico genético. Se trata de una mujer de 74 años con osteoporosis remitida al servicio de Endocrinología por sospecha de hiperparatiroidismo primario (HPTP). Presentaba una hormona paratiroidea (PTH) elevada (96,3 pg/ml-límites normales (LN): 15-65 pg/ml) con niveles de calcio, fósforo y magnesio normales, además de una calciuria elevada. Posteriormente presentó cifras de PTH normales, niveles de calcio elevados junto con calciurias normales-elevadas. El cociente aclaramiento de calcio/aclaramiento de creatinina (CCCR, en mmol/l) osciló entre 0,011-0,02 mmol/l. El CCCR 0,02 de HPTP; este cociente se ve limitado en el rango entre 0,01-0,02 mmol/l, motivo por el que se justifica solicitar la prueba genética en todos los pacientes con PTH normales o altas, hipercalcemia y CCCR 0.02, of HPTP. This ratio is within the range between 0.01 and 0.02 mmol/l, a reason which justifies requesting a genetic test in all patients with normal or high PTH, hypercalcemia and CCCR

Abstract

Item does not contain fulltext Primary trimethylaminuria, or fish odor syndrome, is a congenital metabolic disorder characterized by a failure in the hepatic trimethylamine (TMA) oxidation route to trimethylamine N-oxide (TMANO). TMA is mostly derived from dietary precursors such as choline, carnitine and TMANO. The presence of abnormal amounts of TMA in the urine, sweat, exhaled air and other body secretions confers a very unpleasant body odor resembling that of decaying fish. As a consequence, patients can suffer from serious psychosocial sequelae. We present a case of primary trimethylaminuria with the aim of raising awareness about this condition.

Abstract

Familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia (FHH) is an uncommon cause of hypercalcemia. Its prevalence is estimated to be 1:78,000 people. We describe a case with atypical presentation confirmed by genetic diagnosis. This is a case of a woman of 74 years of age with osteoporosis referred to the endocrinology service with suspected primary hyperparathyroidism (HPTP). She presented with a high level of parathyroid hormone (96.3 pg/ml, normal limits (NL): 15-65 pg/ml), with normal levels of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium, as well as a raised level of calciuria. She subsequently presented with normal levels of PTH, raised levels of calcium, combined with normal -high calciuria. The calcium/creatinine clearance ratio (CCCR, in mmol/l) varied between 0.011 and 0.02 mmol/l. A CCCR <0.01 is suggestive of FHH, and a CCCR >0.02, of HPTP. This ratio is within the range between 0.01 and 0.02 mmol/l, a reason which justifies requesting a genetic test in all patients with normal or high PTH, hypercalcemia and CCCR <0.02, requirements which our index case meets. Abstract

Purpose: Transthoracic 3D echocardiography (3DE) allows an unparalleled opportunity for quantifying the dynamic changes of the tricuspid annulus (TA). Accordingly, our aims were: (I) to assess the determinants of TA size during cardiac cycle in healthy subjects; (II) to propose an approach and timing for TA sizing using 3DE. Methods: In 50 healthy volunteers (45±14 yrs, range 18-74, 27 males, with no risk factors, symptoms, signs or history of cardiovascular disease and on no medication), a full-volume dataset of the right ventricle (RV) containing the tricuspid valve (TV) was acquired (Vivid E9, GE Healthcare). TA diameters (septo-lateral, SL; antero-posterior, AP) and areas were measured on multiplanar images (Flexi-slice, EchoPac BT12, GE Healthcare) at 5 time points during the cardiac cycle: OS (onset of systole, at TV closure); MS (mid-systole); ES (end-systole); ED (onset of diastole); LD (late diastole, after the P wave). RV volumes and ejection fraction (EF) were analyzed with commercial software (4D RV analysis, TomTec, D). Results: Temporal resolution of the 3D datasets was 32±4 vps (range 24-53). TA areas were more closely correlated with RV volumes and body surface area (BSA) than with either SL or AP diameters. TA areas increased during systole from OS (3.9±0.6 cm2/m2) to ES (4.9±0.8 cm2/m2) and reached its largest area in LD (6.7±1.0 cm2/m2). All 5 TA areas were correlated with BSA (r range 0.57-0.62) and RV volumes (r ranges 0.53-0.60 for end-diastolic volume and 0.43-0.50 for end-systolic volume, p<0.0001 for all). Indexed TA areas were not related to either age or gender. With multivariable analysis, both RV end-diastolic volume and BSA determined TA areas during systole and early diastole, while TA area at LD and at OS were independently related with BSA only. Conclusions: In healthy subjects, the main determinants of TA size are RV volume and BSA. The largest TA area occurs at LD and is independently related with BSA only. Therefore, normative values should be based on TA areas measured at LD and indexed for BSA. However, the rapid change in TA areas occurring from LD to OS underscores the importance of adequate temporal resolution of 3DE data sets for reliable TA measurements.

Abstract

Introduction: Gestational diabetes (GD) is related to development of diabetes mellitus (DM) after delivery. The predictive factors in this association are not yet well defined. Objetive: to study the predictive factors of dysglucosis in the postpartum period in a sample of patients with GD., Material and Methods: A total of 1765 women with DG were studied. Variables analyzed: anthropometric data and maternal history. Glycemia in OGTT with 100g (basal: 1, 2 and 3h) and HbA 1c . Use of insulin in pregnancy. The OGTT with 75g and HbA 1c at 3 months after delivery., Results: Postpartum DM prevalence 2.1%. Among these patients, there was a higher percentage of patients with a history of GD (25.9 vs. 12.9%; P<.05), pre-pregnancy obesity (20.8 vs. 14.9%; P<.05) and insulin use during pregnancy (79.2 vs. 20%; P<.01). In the OGTT with 100g, the number of pathological points was higher (3.18±0.69 in DM vs. 2.3±0.28 normal, 2.6±0.47 IFG, 2.5±0.32 IGT; P<.001). In the OGTT 100g, the blood glucose level above which the diagnosis of postpartum DM is most likely is 189mg/dl in the 2h determination (S: 86.2%, E: 72%). A level of HbA 1c >5.9% during pregnancy has a specificity of 95.9% for the diagnosis of postpartum DM in our sample., Conclusion: We show factors associated with the diagnosis of postpartum DM, among which are quantitative determinations such as glycemia at 2h of the OGTT with 100g and HbA 1c during pregnancy in patients with DG., (Copyright © 2018. Abstract

Virilizing tumors are rare disorders that commonly develop in the adrenal cortex or the ovaries. Because these tumors are usually millimetric, androgen-secreting ovarian tumors can be particularly difficult to identify through commonly available imaging techniques and can thus pose a diagnostic challenge. We present the case of a 71-year-old woman who presented with severe clinical hyperandrogenism and biochemical traits suggestive of an ovarian source but who was diagnosed with a 10-cm adrenal mass.

Abstract

Primary trimethylaminuria, or fish odor syndrome, is a congenital metabolic disorder characterized by a failure in the hepatic trimethylamine (TMA) oxidation route to trimethylamine N-oxide (TMANO). TMA is mostly derived from dietary precursors such as choline, carnitine and TMANO. The presence of abnormal amounts of TMA in the urine, sweat, exhaled air and other body secretions confers a very unpleasant body odor resembling that of decaying fish. As a consequence, patients can suffer from serious psychosocial sequelae. We present a case of primary trimethylaminuria with the aim of raising awareness about this condition.
