6. Improved Sliding Mode-Based Controller of a High Voltage Ratio DC–DC Converter for Electrolyzers Supplied by Renewable Energy

Abstract

This article presents a novel control algorithm for a three-level interleaved buck converter (TLIBC) to supply energy to a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer (PEMEL) in the presence of renewable energy sources. It leverages the main advantages of the TLIBC, i.e., a high voltage conversion ratio, low output current ripple, and the ability to operate in case of electrical circuit failures. The new control law, based on nonlinear improved sliding model-based control, offers a significant improvement of the performance for input power variation when renewable energy sources are used. The proposed controller exhibits further benefits, such as a faster dynamic response and greater robustness against parameter uncertainties when compared to traditional PI-based control. Experimental verification is carried out using a PEMEL dynamic emulator to preserve the real PEMEL performance during the tests. The obtained experimental results demonstrated that the proposed control technique overcomes current limitations in terms of performance usually characterized by PI controllers. Particularly, during operating conditions change when considering electrolyzers powered by renewable energy sources, a faster response is obtained. The rise time is imposed by the controller, and it does not depend on the operating point.

Abstract

This study proposes a non‐isolated DC converter, which is connected in series with an inverter, with a high output voltage conversion ratio for application in electricity generation systems to upgrade low‐voltage to high‐voltage DC. The topology of the proposed converter is based on a boost converter, which has the limitation of a low voltage conversion ratio. The converter is developed and connected using a coupling inductance technique by adding a second winding L2 coupled with the prototype winding and diode D2. This technique increases the voltage ratio via the ratio operator (N) of both the induction coils by operating a single switch at a constant frequency of 60 kHz. The working principle of the proposed converter is based on pulse width modulation with a duty cycle ≤40%. When the converter receives a low voltage DC input of 36 V, it converts the input to a high output voltage of 325 V at an output power 125 W, showing a circuit efficiency of 92.48% at full load. The synthesis and design of the controller include a linear approach to represent the parameters using the small signal methodology, which is employed to establish a transfer function. Furthermore, the proposed converter is capable of effectively regulating the output voltage, even when subjected to variations in the output load by employing a proportional–integral control mechanism. The close loop results obtained from simulations and practical implementation verified the proposed circuit design, as both results agreed with the theoretical analysis. This paper presented the high output voltage conversion ratio non‐isolated DC converter, which would be applied in the electricity generation system from the substitute source, to upgrade the low‐voltage to the high‐voltage DC, then series connected with DC–AC inverter. The presented converter had the topology development from DC boost converter with the limitation of the low‐voltage conversion ratio, which was developed and corrected with the coupling inductance technique by adding the second winding L2 to coupling with the prototype winding and diode D2. This technique could increase the higher voltage ratio via the ratio operate (N) of both induction coils, with the operating of a single switch, at the constant frequency 60 kHz. It worked according to the pulse width modulation with the duty cycle ≤40%. This converter receives low voltage input 36 VDC provide to high voltage output 325 VDC, at the output power 125 W and the circuit efficiency equal to 92.48%, at the full load. And could maintain the output voltage by PI control under changing of output loading condition. According, it were found that the obtained close loop results from simulation and implementation results verified the proposed and design circuit. Both results agreed with the theoretical analysis. Abstract

Installation of new wind farms in areas such as the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula is of vital importance to face the local energy demand. For the proper functioning of these facilities it is important to perform wind data analysis, the data having been collected by anemometers, and to consider the particular characteristics of the studied area. However, despite the great development of anemometers, forecasting methods are necessary for the optimal harvesting of wind energy. For this reason, this study focuses on developing an enhanced wind forecasting method that can be applied to wind data from the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula (in general, any type of data). Thus, strategies can be established to generate a greater amount of energy from the wind farms, which supports the local economy of this area. Four variants have been developed based on the traditional double and single exponential methods. Furthermore, these methods were compared to the experimental data to obtain the optimal forecasting method for the Yucatan area. The forecasting method with the highest performance has obtained an average relative error of 7.9510% and an average mean error of 0.3860 m/s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Dans le cadre de l’élaboration de stratégies technologiques pour s’opposer au réchauffement climatique, il est important de développer des solutions permettant de stocker l’énergie électrique, puis de la distribuer en fonction des besoins, car cette énergie ne peut pas être conservée sur le réseau EDF. L’hydrogène représente une solution attractive et prometteuse pour stocker et fournir une énergie électrique déjà produite. De plus, les technologies à base d’hydrogène sont bien adaptées à la modularité des sources d’énergie renouvelables. Le présent article présente les verrous technologiques et une plateforme dédiée à l’utilisation de l’hydrogène dans le cadre des énergies renouvelables et du stockage de l’énergie entre quatre laboratoires de l’Université de Lorraine ayant chacun une équipe hébergée dans les locaux de l’IUT de Longwy.

Abstract

Ce projet concerne les stations de recharge à hydrogène « vert et local » pour les véhicules électriques. Dans cette première communication, nous nous focalisons sur les aspects psychosociologiques : l’acceptabilité sociale de bornes à hydrogène vert. Les stations de recharge à hydrogène « vert et local » est une activité en croissance, centrale en termes de développement territorial, en matière d’énergies alternatives et de développement durable. Outre les conditions de la rentabilité économique des investissements, l’essor performant de cette activité dépend de la capacité à surmonter les résistances individuelles et sociales. Cette recherche mobilise la théorie de l’engagement comportemental citoyen, pour comprendre d’une part les logiques et les stratégies des agents ou acteurs et d’autre part les processus d’acceptation à l’œuvre au cours du déploiement des projets d’implantation de bornes à hydrogène. Le niveau d’engagement citoyen est principalement dépendant de l’acceptabilité sociale d’une borne à hydrogène.
