O milho é uma cultura de destaque no Sul Catarinense, mas a falta de conhecimento adequado ao manejo da cultura impacta na produtividade. O objetivo foi realizar o levantamento das práticas agronômicas utilizadas em propriedades agrícolas produtoras de milho em grão no sul de Santa Catarina e traçar um diagnóstico dos sistemas atuais adotados. Foram aplicados questionários, nos quais adotou-se o modelo das proporções populacionais, que demostrou a necessidade de aplicação de 84 questionários para a obtenção de uma amostra com 95% de confiança e 5% de erro amostral máximo, em 20 municípios do Sul Catarinense para avaliar as técnicas empregadas no cultivo e suas implicações produtivas. De forma geral, pode-se constatar que a adoção de práticas de manejo, como espaçamento reduzido, alta densidade de semeadura e manejo de pragas e doenças foram fatores agregadores de produtividade na cultura.

Tangolagrass (Brachiaria arrecta × Brachiaria mutica) is a stoloniferous warm-season grass considered as an alternative to forming permanent grasslands in waterlogged tropical regions. However, information about grazing management targets for such species is still scarce. This two-year study aimed to identify pre-grazing canopy heights that do not compromise both leaf lamina production and nutritive value of tangolagrass pastures, and to test whether lower canopy height could decrease stolon elongation process. To this end, three pre-grazing canopy heights (20, 30, or 40 cm, all lowered in 40% of their initial heights) were assigned to nine 390-m2 plots grazed by cattle. Herbage, leaf, and stem accumulation rates were not different among treatments (57, 23, and 27 kg DM ha−1 d−1, respectively; p > 0.05). Also, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were similar among treatments (56 and 24% DM, respectively; p > 0.05), but crude protein (CP) was greater (p = 0.0180) in pastures managed with 30 cm (24.7% DM × 22.5% DM). Thus, pre-grazing canopy heights between 20–40 cm combined with low levels of defoliation (up to 40% of the initial height) provide the same primary productivity in tangolagrass pastures. However, stolon elongation could not be reduced within such canopy height targets.

Natural pastures are important ecosystems that both contribute to biodiversity conservation and provide an important source of income, especially for cattle ranchers. While these pastures yield fairly low productivity, they can be improved by increasing soil fertility and introducing species with high productive potentials. In this sense, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of applying limestone and phosphorus, as well as introducing cool-season species with a mixture of species dominated by Schizachyrium tenerum Nees, into a natural pasture in the Catarinense Plateau. The experiment was conducted from January 2010 to December 2013; the treatments consisted of superficial distribution of limestone in proportions of 3.6, 7.2, 11.0, and 14.4 t ha-1, as well as distribution of phosphorus in the form of triple superphosphate in proportions of 35, 70, 105, and 140 kg of P2O5 ha-1. In addition, cool-season species were overseeded. The experiment consisted of a randomized block design with subdivided plots and three replications. Limestone was applied to the main parcel, whereas phosphorus was applied to the subplots. There was no interaction between the levels of limestone and phosphorus. The application of 11.0 t ha-1 of limestone yielded the highest forage production, with 3,932.2 kg of dry matter (DM) ha-1 during the second year. Red clover was the species that best reacted to the additions, with levels of 7.2 and 11.0 t ha-1 over the 4 years. In addition, phosphorus provoked a positive response throughout the experiment. The highest forage production was observed during the second year, with an addition of 140 kg P2O5 ha-1 (4,419.4 kg DM ha-1). Only one-eighth of the recommended amount of limestone (3.6 t ha-1) allowed for the establishment and persistence of the legumes introduced into natural pastures. These additions, associated with increasing levels of phosphorus, yielded linear growth in the production of forage in natural pastures with a mixture of species dominated by Schizachyrium tenerum Nees.

The objective of this study was to assess forage production in a natural grassland by applying different doses of limestone and phosphorus, and the influence of these applications on soil profile. The treatments consisted of the application of limestone doses of 0.0, 7.2, and 14.4 t ha-1 and phosphorus doses of 0,35, 70, and 140 kg of P2O5 ha-1 on the soil surface. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with split-plots and three replications. The limestone doses were distributed in the main plot and applied only at the beginning of the experiment, whereas the phosphorus doses were distributed in the subplots with subsequent annual maintenance applications. Was used a ruler (cm) for monitoring the growth of pastures and, when grasses reached an average height of 20 cm, forage samples were collected in each subplot and botanical and morphological components were separated and dried until a constant weight was achieved. In the third and fourth assessment years, soil samples were collected in the 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, and 15-20-cm layers to evaluate the influence of treatments on the chemical properties of the soil. The variables analyzed were related to the production of several components, including fodder, native grasses, leguminous plants, unwanted plants, and dead material, in addition to soil properties such as pH, exchangeable aluminum concentration, and base saturation. There was no interaction between the limestone and phosphorus treatments. The effect of limestone doses on forage production was assessed in the third year, and, in the following year, the intermediate dose of limestone (7.2 t ha-1) produced the highest yield (2,316.1 kg of dry matter [DM] of forage ha-1). The increase in phosphorus doses increased forage production in the second year, and reached yields of up to 2,232 Kg DM ha-1 in the fourth year. In summary, the production of natural pastures was enhanced by the application of 25% of the recommended dose of limestone (7.2 t ha-1), and by the application of 50% of the recommended dose of phosphorus (70 kg P2O5 ha-1). The increase in limestone doses directly affected the chemical properties of the soil by decreasing acidity and exchangeable aluminum, and increasing base saturation, even in deeper layers (0-20 cm). The increase in phosphorus doses did not increase the mobility of this nutrient in the deeper layers of the soil (10-20 cm), and the effects were restricted to a depth of up to 10 cm.

ABSTRACT: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) is one of the most cultivated temperate annual forage crop around the world. Despite that, there is little information about the process of stem elongation during its vegetative growth. This information would be useful for grazing management purposes. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the herbage accumulation and stem elongation rates in annual ryegrass pastures submitted to intermittent stocking. The experimental design used was a completely randomized 2x2 factorial with three replications. The treatments were defined by the combination of two pre-grazing heights (15 and 25cm) associated with two post-grazing heights (4 and 8cm). The herbage accumulation rates were higher in pastures with 25cm pre-grazing associated with post-grazing heights of 8cm. However, leaf production rate was only affected by post-grazing height, with higher values being recorded for stubbles heights of 8cm, regardless of pre-grazing height. Stem elongation rates in annual ryegrass tillers increased rapidly when pastures reached around 18cm, a condition where there was a relatively low competition for light, suggesting that; 1) pre-grazing heights of 18 to 20cm in annual ryegrass could be used as a upper limit for grazing management purposes whether the objective is to minimize stem contribution in accumulated herbage and 2) It seems that stem elongation is as inevitable process (independently of competition for light) and that this could be related to the necessary strength of stems, pseudostems and sheaths to support larger and heavier leaves.

As pastagens naturais representam um importante ecossistema, com contribuições tanto para manutenção da biodiversidade quanto para geração de renda aos produtores, principalmente na pecuária de corte. No entanto, os níveis de produtividade destas pastagens são relativamente baixos, e podem ser melhorados com incrementos em fertilidade do solo e introdução de espécies de elevado potencial produtivo. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação de níveis de calcário e fósforo, bem como da introdução de espécies de inverno em uma pastagem natural com predomínio de Schizachyrium tenerum Nees no Planalto Catarinense. O experimento foi conduzido de janeiro de 2010 a dezembro de 2013, e os tratamentos consistiram na distribuição superficial de calcário nas doses de 3,6; 7,2; 11,0 e 14,4 t ha-1; distribuição de fósforo na forma de superfosfato triplo nas doses de 35; 70; 105 e 140 kg de P2O5 ha-1; e a sobressemeadura de espécies de estação fria. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas e três repetições. Os níveis de calcário foram distribuídos nas parcelas e os de fósforo nas subparcelas. Não houve interação entre os níveis de calcário e fosforo. A aplicação de 11,0 t ha-1 de calcário propocionou a maior produção de forragem, de 3.932,2 kg MS ha-1, no 2º ano. O trevo-vermelho foi a espécie que melhor respondeu ao corretivo, nos níveis de 7,2 a 11,0 t ha-1 durante os 4 anos. O fósforo proporcionou resposta positiva durante todo período experimental. A máxima produção de forragem ocorreu no 2º ano para a dose de 140 kg P2O5 ha-1 (4.419,4 kg MS ha-1). Apenas 1/8 da recomendação de calcário (3,6 t ha-1) permite o estabelecimento e a persistência de leguminosas introduzidas em pastagem natural, dose esta que associada à níveis crescentes de fosforo proporcionam aumentos lineares na produção de forragem em pastagem natural com predomínio de Schizachyrium tenerum Nees.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphogenetic and structural characteristics of Aruana guineagrass pastures (Panicum maximum cv. Aruana) subjected to rotational stocking by sheep. The treatments corresponded to grazing when swards reached 95 or 98% of interception of incident light (LI) until post-grazing heights of 10 and 15cm and were allocated to experimental units (plots of 196 m²), according to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design, with three replications, from January to May 2009. The morphogenetic assessments included: leaf appearance and elongation rates (LAR and LER), phyllochron (PHY) and leaf life span (LLS). Structural evaluations assessed the number of green leaves (NGL), dead leaves (NDL) and expanded leaves (NEL) per tiller, tiller population density (TPD) and final leaf length (FLL). The pre-grazing sward height relatively constant during the experimental period, with values ranging between 30 and 40 cm for treatments of 95 and 98% of LI, respectively, indicating potential for the development and use of management practices based on pasture conditions goals. The morphogenetic and structural characteristics were influenced by the frequency and intensity of grazing adopted, as well as by the seasons, implying that the capacity and speed for the recovery of Aruana grass pastures after grazing depend mainly on the management and edaphoclimatic conditions. The best grazing management for Aruana guineagrass is 95% canopy light interception, i.e., 30 cm pre-grazing height pastures interrupted when reaching 15 cm residue.

O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a participação relativa de colmo na estrutura vertical de pastos de capim Aruana e azevém anual submetidos a estratégias de pastejo intermitente por ovinos. Os tratamentos para o capim Aruana corresponderam a pastejos realizados quando os pastos atingiam 95 e 98% de interceptação da luz incidente (IL) até as alturas pós-pastejo de 10 e 15cm. Para o azevém anual, os tratamentos corresponderam a pastejos realizados quando os pastos atingiam 15 e 25cm de altura pré-pastejo até as alturas pós-pastejo de 4 e 8cm. O delineamento experimental utilizado para as duas espécies foi inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 2x2, com três repetições. Para quantificação da massa de colmo na estrutura vertical dos pastos, foram realizadas duas amostragens no pré-pastejo por unidade experimental (piquetes de 196m²) utilizando-se um quadrado de 25cm x 25cm de lado, em cada ciclo de pastejo. As amostras foram coletadas de forma estratificada a cada 5cm até o nível do solo. Após o corte estratificado, o material foi separado em colmo, folhas e material morto. Independente da espécie vegetal ou da altura de entrada, aproximadamente 90% de todo o colmo dos pastos encontra-se presente até 50% da altura do pasto, indicando que possíveis reduções em consumo a partir desse momento no rebaixamento podem ser atribuídas a dificuldades em manipulação e apreensão da forragem.The aim of this study was to determine the relative contribution of stem in the vertical structure of Aruana guineagrass and annual ryegrass pastures submitted to strategies of rotational grazing by sheep. Treatments for Aruana guineagrass corresponded to grazing when the swards intercepted 95 and 98% of the incident light (LI) until the post-grazing heights of 10 and 15cm. For annual ryegrass, treatments corresponded to grazing when the swards reached 15 and 25cm (pre-grazing heights) until the post-grazing of 4 and 8cm. The experimental design for two species was a completely randomized in a 2x2 factorial scheme, with three replications. To quantify the stem mass present at each 5cm in the vertical structure of the pastures two samples were taken per experimental unit (paddocks of 196m²) using a square of 25cmx25cm. Cut samples was separated in leaves, stem and dead material. Regardless of plant species or pre-grazing height, approximately 90% of the stem is present up to 50% of sward height, suggesting that reported intake reduction beyond this point can be attributed to difficulties in forage manipulation and apprehension.

The objective of this study was to assess the accumulation and morphological composition of forage in Aruana Guineagrass (Panicum maximum cv. Aruana) swards subjected to intermittent stocking with sheep. Experimental treatments when grazing was introduced included low (95%) and high (98%) incident light interception and low (10 cm)- and high (15 cm)-residue height and were allocated to experimental units (196 m² fenced areas) in a completely randomized 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with three replicates. Treatments were imposed between January and May 2009. More frequent grazing cycles (95% light interception) resulted in better control of stem elongation, lower proportion of dead plant material and invasive plants, and higher proportions of leaf blades in the grazing strata, compared with less frequent grazing cycles (98% light interception). Grass managed with 95% light interception combined with 10 and 15 cm post-grazing height and grass managed at 98% light interception combined with 15 cm post-grazing height did not show differences in forage accumulation rate. These results indicate that more frequent (30 cm pre-grazing height) and less severe (15 cm post-grazing height) grazing cycles provided animals with high leaf blade mass and low stem mass forage.

A queima de campos no Brasil aparece como prática de manejo tradicional das pastagens. No Norte, Nordeste e Centro-Oeste, embora muito contestada no meio científico, por entidades ambientalistas e pela sociedade em geral, constitui uma realidade e prática comum. No Sul, mais precisamente em Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul, esta atividade vem sendo amplamente difundida, principalmente em razão da topografia acidentada e do afloramento de rochas, que dificultam o manejo do pasto acumulado durante o final do inverno. Os motivos para a utilização da queima como estratégia de manejo estariam relacionados com a eliminação do material vegetal crestado pelas geadas durante o inverno, cujo excesso, segundo os produtores, prejudicaria a rebrotação na primavera, pois os animais (ruminantes e equinos) não consumiriam o pasto seco envelhecido e atingido pelas geadas. Outras questões citadas estariam relacionadas ao grau de infestação de espécies indesejáveis em áreas queimadas e não queimadas e a velocidade e qualidade da rebrotação das espécies forrageiras após a queima. As argumentações citadas são baseadas na maioria das vezes em observações visuais com pesquisas realizadas em áreas pouco representativas e sem histórico conhecido de queimadas conduzindo às conclusões precipitadas ou equivocadas e muitas vezes distorcidas da realidade. Assim, com esta revisão bibliográfica tem-se como objetivos discutir os principais efeitos das queimadas em pastagens, suas vantagens, desvantagens e, principalmente, os prejuízos causados pelo uso contínuo e frequente do fogo como instrumento de manejo.
