Pregnancy loss (PL) has important impacts on the profitability of livestock production systems, although it is not widely reported, particularly in Bos indicus cattle. The present study retrospectively evaluated PL after timed-artificial insemination (TAI) in Bos indicus (Nelore) beef cows corresponding to several factors, such as parity, body condition score (BCS), presence of corpus luteum (CL) at the beginning of TAI protocols, expression of estrus, and hormonal manipulations during the TAI protocol. Data from two experiments performed during three breeding seasons (BS) were reanalyzed. Both experiments evaluated adding GnRH treatment at TAI in a 7-d estradiol (E2) plus progesterone (P4)-based protocol, with intravaginal P4 implant removal on Day 7 combined with treatment with 0.5 or 1.0 mg E2 cypionate and 300 IU eCG, and TAI on Day 9. In addition, during BS 2 and 3 (Exp 2), cows were randomized to receive or not a PGF treatment on Day 0 (beginning of the TAI protocol). In all BS, presence of CL and BCS were evaluated at the beginning of TAI protocols, follicle size and expression of estrus were evaluated at TAI. The PL was assessed between the first pregnancy diagnosis (∼35d) and parturition. There were no effects of hormonal manipulations within TAI protocols of different BS on PL. There was no interaction between GnRH treatment at TAI and the other variables within BS, and there was no main effect of GnRH treatment on PL (without = 10.1% [102/1007] vs. with = 10.4% [114/1100]). The addition of PGF on Day 0 had no effect on PL (11.5% [102/886] vs. 10.5% [89/850]), as well as EC dose to induce final ovulation (10.8% [89/827] vs. 11.2% [102/909] for 0.5 and 1.0 mg, respectively). Primiparous had greater PL than multiparous cows (14.0% [77/550] vs. 8.9% [139/1557]), and cows not expressing estrus near TAI had greater PL than those expressing estrus (13.5% [57/422] vs. 9.7% [156/1617]). There was no interaction between follicle size at TAI and GnRH treatment on PL. However, probability of PL decreased linearly as follicle size at TAI increased. There were no effects of service number (first TAI or resynchronization), BCS, or presence of CL on D0 on PL. In addition, PL was not affected by sire within any of the BS. In conclusion, some factors that are known to impact pregnancy per AI also influenced PL, such as parity and expression of estrus, although, other aspects such as BCS, number of services, and presence of CL on D0 did not affect PL. Moreover, commonly implemented treatments to increase fertility (e.g., PGF on Day 0 and increasing EC dose to 1.0 mg) did not affect PL. Finally, the GnRH treatment at TAI had no effect on PL and did not interact with any of the variables, an important result, since GnRH at TAI also increases fertility in Bos indicus beef cows.

Cattle are generally considered a monovular species; however, recently a bovine high fecundity allele, termed the Trio allele, was discovered. Carriers of Trio have an elevated ovulation rate (3 to 5) while half-sibling noncarriers are monovular. Carriers of the Trio allele have overexpression in granulosa cells of SMAD6, an inhibitor of oocyte-derived regulators of granulosa cell proliferation and differentiation. In experiment 1, follicle size was tracked for each follicle during a follicular wave. Follicle growth rate was greater before vs after follicle deviation in both carriers and noncarriers. Additionally, follicle growth rate was consistently less in carriers vs noncarriers. In experiment 2, we collected granulosa cells from follicles before and after deviation for evaluation of granulosa cell gene expression. Granulosa cell proliferation was less in carriers vs noncarriers and after vs before follicle deviation (decreased expression of cell cycle genes CCNB1 and CCNA2). The decreased granulosa cell proliferation in noncarriers after deviation was associated with increased SMAD6 expression. Similarly, in experiment 3 decreased expression of SMAD6 in granulosa cells of noncarriers cultured in vitro for 60 hours was associated with increased expression of cell cycle genes. This suggests that SMAD6 may not just be inhibiting follicle growth rate in carriers of Trio but may also play a role in the decreased follicle growth after deviation in noncarriers. The hypotheses were supported that (1) follicle growth and granulosa cell proliferation decreases after deviation in both carriers and noncarriers and that (2) granulosa cell proliferation is reduced in carriers compared to noncarriers.

Portugal, located in the southwest region of the Eurasian plate, has been affected by several destructive earthquakes throughout its history, the most well-known being the 1755 Great Lisbon earthquake. The seismicity of the territory, both in the mainland and in the Azores and Madeira islands, has prompted the continuous development of seismic monitoring, from the first known macroseismic inquiry, following the 1755 Great Lisbon earthquake, to the current state-of-the-art seismic network. Once scattered in separate efforts, at present, most seismic stations in Portugal relay its data to a common data center, at Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, where data are automatically processed for the downstream generation of both manually revised and automatically generated products and services. In this article, we summarize the evolution of the permanent seismic network, its current status, the products and services that are publicly available, a recent effort of rapid deployment of a dense network following a mainshock, and state-of-the-art ocean-bottom seismometer developments.

Bovine twin birth is associated with detriments including increased embryo/fetal losses, malpresentation and dystocia. Incidence of these is lessened in bilateral versus unilateral twin pregnancy. This study was undertaken to assess use of follicular ablation by aspiration to create bilateral twin pregnancies in females with genetic potential for ~3.5 ovulations per cycle (Trio allele carriers). In Experiment 1, carriers (n = 30) and non-carriers (n = 10) were synchronized for ovulation and timed artificial insemination (TAI). Follicles (> 5 mm) in excess of one per ovary were aspirated ~16h preceding TAI. Follicle count for females with follicles on only one ovary was reduced to two. Blood was sampled 2 weeks post-TAI to assess progesterone (P4) concentrations; fetal count was determined by ultrasound 6 weeks post-TAI. P4 concentration post-TAI was significantly (P < 0.001) associated with both genotype and subsequent pregnancy status (pregnant non-carriers, 7.06 ± 0.68 ng/mL; pregnant carriers, 5.54 ± 0.55 ng/mL; non-pregnant non-carriers, 5.22 ± 1.05 ng/mL; non-pregnant carriers, 3.13 ± 0.42 ng/mL). Experiment 2 was undertaken to offset negative effects of follicular aspiration on subsequent P4 concentration observed in Experiment 1. Carriers (n = 38) and non-carriers (n = 32) were submitted to fixed-TAI and follicle ablation as described. Additionally, accessory corpora lutea were induced by administration of hCG (carriers) at d6 post-TAI. Consequently, P4 concentration post-TAI was significantly (P < 0.05) associated with subsequent pregnancy status (pregnant, 8.48 ± 0.61 ng/mL; non-pregnant, 6.70 ± 0.63 ng/mL) but not with genotype (carrier, 8.01 ± 0.59 ng/mL; non-carrier, 7.17 ± 0.64 ng/mL). Fetus number was greater in carriers (Exp1, 1.64 ± 0.81; Exp2, 1.45 ± 0.09) versus non-carriers (1.00 ± 0.00, both Experiments). Singles, twins, and triplets occurred in carriers in Experiment 1, whereas multiples in Experiment 2 were limited to twins. Genotype effects on pregnancy rate were not significant (P > 0.10) in either experiment. Results suggest follicular ablation to create bilateral twin pregnancies in Trio carriers is feasible but requires induction of accessory corpora lutea to offset the negative effects of follicular aspiration on subsequent P4 concentration.

Embryo number was greater in carriers (exp. 1: 1.64 ± 0.81; exp 2: 1.45 ± 0.09) vs. noncarriers (1.00 ± 0.00, both experiments). Changes in circulating progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2) during proestrus produce dynamic changes in endometrial function and pituitary release of gonadotropins. Independent and combined effects of P4 and E2 on endometrium and pituitary were evaluated. In a preliminary study, an exogenous hormone model of proestrus was created by removal of corpus luteum and follicles ≥5 mm followed by gradual removal of intravaginal P4 implants during 18 h and treatment with increasing doses of estradiol benzoate during 48 h to mimic proestrus using high E2 (n = 9) or low E2 (n = 9). Decreased P4, increased E2, and increased endometrial area (EA) simulated proestrus in high-E2 cows and this was used subsequently. The main experiment used a 2 × 2 factorial design with: high E2 and low P4 (n = 11); high E2 and high P4 (n = 11); low E2 and high P4 (n = 11); low E2 and low P4 (n = 10). At 48 h, gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-induced luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) release was determined. Variables were analyzed using PROCMIXED of Statistical Analysis System. The EA increased dramatically during 48 h only in high-E2 and low-P4 cows. For FSH, high-E2 cows had greater area under the curve (AUC) and FSH peak after GnRH than low E2, with mild negative effects of high P4. For LH, concentration at peak and AUC were 2-fold greater in high E2 compared to low-E2 groups, with low P4 also 2-fold greater than high-P4 groups. Thus, maximal changes in uterus and pituitary during proestrus depend on both low P4 and high E2, but different physiologic responses are regulated differently by E2 and P4. Changes in endometrium depend on low P4 and high E2, whereas GnRH-induced FSH secretion primarily depends on high E2, and GnRH-induced LH secretion is independently increased by high E2 or reduced by high P4.

The aim of these experiments was to study ovarian dynamics and fertility of Bos indicus beef cattle submitted to 7-d progesterone (P4)-based fixed-time AI (FTAI) protocols using different hormonal treatments. In Exp. 1, 2 yr old Nelore heifers (n = 973) were randomly assigned to one of four treatments: EB-0 (estradiol benzoate, EB on D0 and no GnRH at AI), EB-G (EB on D0 and GnRH at AI), G-0 (GnRH on D0 and no GnRH at AI), or G-G (GnRH on D0 and at AI). On D0, heifers received an intravaginal P4 implant (0.5 g) for 7 d and EB (1.5 mg) or GnRH (16.8 μg). On D7, the P4 implant was withdrawn and heifers received cloprostenol (PGF; 0.5 mg) and estradiol cypionate (EC, 0.5 mg). Heifers in G groups also received PGF and eCG (200 IU) on D6, whereas EB heifers received eCG on D7. At FTAI on D9, only EB-G and G-G groups received GnRH (8.4 μg). In Exp. 2, Nelore cows (n = 804) received the same treatments (EB-0, EB-G, G-0, or G-G) using a 1.0 g P4 implant, 2.0 mg EB, and 300 IU eCG. Effects were considered significant when P ≤ 0.05. After treatment on D0, G had more ovulations than EB in heifers (60.3 [287/476] vs. 12.7% [63/497]) and cows (73.7 [83/112] vs. 24.4% [28/113]). Luteolysis after D0 was greater in EB than G in heifers (39.2 [159/406] vs. 20.0% [77/385]) and cows (25.5 [14/55] vs. 1.6% [1/64]). Heifers in G had larger follicles (mm) than EB on D7 (10.3 ± 0.2 vs. 9.2 ± 0.2) and at AI (11.9 ± 0.2 vs. 11.3 ± 0.2). Cows had larger follicles in G than EB on D7 (11.0 ± 0.3 vs. 9.9 ± 0.3) but not at AI. More estrus was observed in G than EB for heifers (80.3 [382/476] vs. 69.6% [346/497]) and cows (67.6 [270/400] vs. 56.2% [227/404]). There was no interaction between D0 and D9 treatments on pregnancy per AI (P/AI) in heifers (EB-0: 56.7 [139/245], EB-G: 53.6 [135/252], G-0: 52.6 [127/241], and G-G: 57.5% [135/235]). However, cows from EB-G had greater P/AI than EB-0 (69.5 [142/204] vs. 60.2% [120/200]), whereas P/AI for G-0 (62.7% [127/203]) was similar to G-G (60.9% [120/197]). In heifers, there was no interaction of GnRH at AI with estrus, however, cows that did not display estrus had greater P/AI if they received GnRH at AI (GnRH = 59.1 [91/154] vs. No GnRH = 48.2% [78/162]). Thus, protocols initiated with EB or GnRH for Bos indicus heifers and cows had differing ovarian dynamics but similar overall fertility, enabling their use in reproductive management programs. Treatment with GnRH at time of AI increased fertility in some instances in Bos indicus cows but not in heifers.

This study aimed to validate a 7 d progesterone (P4)-based fixed-time AI (FTAI) protocol for Bos indicus cattle by comparing to 8 and 9 d-type protocols. The first study compared 7 vs. 8 d protocols in Nelore heifers (Exp. 1.1; n = 742) and cows (Exp. 1.2; n = 2488), and the second study compared 7 vs. 9 d protocols in cows (Exp. 2; n = 1343). On experimental Day −10 and Day −11 the 8 and 9 d groups received an intravaginal P4 implant, 2.0 mg estradiol benzoate (EB) and 0.5 mg cloprostenol sodium (PGF). On Day −9 the 7 d group received the same treatments (P4, EB, and PGF). Then, on Day −2 all groups had the P4 implants removed, and PGF, 0.6 mg estradiol cypionate, and 300 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) was administered. Fixed-time AI was performed 48 h later (Day 0) and 8.4 mg buserelin acetate (GnRH) was administered to 7d-G, 8d-G and 9d-G groups, whereas 7d-0, 8d-0 and 9d-0 groups did not receive GnRH at AI. Estrus was detected using tail-chalk between Day −2 and Day 0. Pregnancy per AI (P/AI) was evaluated by ultrasound 30 d after AI. Effects were considered significant when P ≤ 0.05, whereas a tendency was designated when P ≤ 0.10 and P > 0.05. In heifers (Exp. 1.1), incidence of estrus was similar regardless of protocol length (7 or 8 d). There was no independent treatment effect on P/AI or interaction between protocol length and GnRH at AI for P/AI (7d-0: 46.9, 7d-G: 51.4, 8d-0: 47.7, and 8d-G: 43.6%). Heifers in estrus had greater P/AI, and GnRH had no additional effect. More cows (Exp. 1.2) from the 8 d protocol were in estrus than cows submitted to the 7 d protocol. Additionally, despite no interaction between protocol length and GnRH on P/AI (7d-0: 55.9, 7d-G: 60.9, 8d-0: 56.2, and 8d-G: 60.8%), GnRH at AI increased P/AI. There was no interaction between estrus and GnRH, but cows displaying estrus had greater P/AI. Cows not expressing estrus tended (P = 0.06) to have greater P/AI when receiving GnRH. In Exp. 2, more 9 d cows were in estrus than 7 d cows. Protocol length did not affect P/AI but tended (P = 0.08) to interact with GnRH (7d-G had greater P/AI [57.9%] than 7d-0 [47.6%], but 9d-0 [54.6%] and 9d-G [55.4%] were not different from other groups). Moreover, GnRH increased P/AI only for the 7 d protocol. No interaction between estrus and GnRH was detected but estrus improved P/AI, and GnRH tended (P = 0.09) to improve P/AI of cows in estrus. In conclusion, despite longer protocols being more conducive to expression of estrus, there were no detectable effects of protocol length on P/AI. In addition, GnRH at FTAI may improve fertility in cows, particularly when cows are treated with shorter protocols.

Three experiments evaluated ovarian dynamics and circulating progesterone (P4) during P4-based protocols initiated with GnRH, estradiol benzoate (EB), or no additional treatment in Nelore (Bos indicus) cattle. In Exp 1 (n = 59 cows), a 5-d P4-only protocol (P-5d; D0: P4 implant alone (1g); D5: P4 removal, 0.5 mg estradiol cypionate [EC], 0.526 mg cloprostenol [PGF], and 300 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin [eCG]; D7: 8.4 μg buserelin acetate [GnRH]) was compared to a 9d protocol initiated with EB (EB-9d; D0: 2 mg EB + P4; D9: P4 removal + EC + PGF + eCG), and to a 7d GnRH protocol (G-7d; D0: 16.8 μg GnRH + P4; D6: PGF + eCG; D7: P4 removal + PGF; D9: GnRH). Exp 2 (n = 55 cows) compared G-7d and EB-7d protocols (similar to EB-9d, but D9 treatments were done on D7). Exp 3 (n = 64 heifers) compared EB-7d, G-7d, and P-5d protocols. For all experiments, daily ovarian ultrasonography was done from D0 until 4d after implant withdrawal and blood samples were collected at D0 and first PGF. Follicle dynamics were determined for each individual animal, analyzed within individual experiments, and afterwards combined to determine overall effects of treatments. The protocol that began with GnRH, G-7d, had greater ovulation rate after D0 with subsequently greater number of CL and circulating P4 at time of PGF (52.8%, 1.0 ± 0.1 CL, 4.0 ± 0.4 ng/mL) than for EB protocols (12.1%, 0.4 ± 0.05 CL, 2.0 ± 0.2 ng/mL), or P-5d (2.5%, 0.6 ± 0.09 CL, 2.6 ± 0.3 ng/mL). The G-7d and EB protocols had synchronized follicle wave emergence in 92.1% of animals but with distinct patterns. For the G-7d group, wave emergence occurred earlier in ovulating than non-ovulating animals (1.4 ± 0.2 d vs 2.5 ± 0.4 d). By comparison, most animals in EB-7d or EB-9d (80.3%) displayed atresia of the dominant follicle, followed by wave emergence 2–3 d after EB treatment. In contrast, P-5d protocol synchronized wave emergence in only 30.0% of cows. Nevertheless, no differences among treatments were detected for ovulation at end of the protocol (85.7%). In conclusion, the P-5d protocol did not synchronize follicle wave emergence but produced similar final ovulation, whereas, GnRH and EB protocols had follicle dynamics synchronized by distinct mechanisms that produced differences in CL number and P4 at the time of PGF treatment but similar final ovulation. Based on ovarian function, each of these synchronization methods are promising for use in FTAI, although fertility still needs to be evaluated.

To improve the knowledge on progesterone (P4)-based hormonal protocols for synchronization of ovulation in Bos indicus, three studies were performed. The first study, consisting of three experiments (two in non-lactating cows, and one in Nelore heifers), were based on daily ultrasound evaluation and blood sampling for circulating P4 at specific times [onset of the protocol (D0) and first prostaglandin F2α (PGF) administration] of P4-based protocols differing in: inducer of the follicle wave emergence; protocol lengths; and ovulation inducer at the end of the protocol. Administration of 16.8 µg of buserelin acetate (GnRH) at the beginning of the protocol was associated with better ovulation rate after D0 (~55%), and higher number of corpus luteum (CL) at PGF. In addition, sometimes GnRH-based protocols were associated to early emergence of the follicle wave (~1.9 d after D0) and/or bigger ovulatory follicle, as well as greater circulating P4 at the time of PGF, especially in females that ovulated after GnRH administration. Nevertheless, protocols based on estradiol benzoate (EB) promoted delayed follicular wave emergence (~2.4 d after D0), but both (GnRH and EB) were associated to satisfactory synchronization rate of follicular wave emergence between D0 and D5 (~92%). In contrast, short protocols (5 d of P4 implant) only with insertion of a P4 implant on D0 were associated to low follicle wave emergence between D0 and D5 (~30%). However, the three strategies mentioned above promoted high ovulation rate at the end of the protocol (~85%), and did not differ in relation to the time of ovulation. The second study, consisting of two experiments (one in Nelore heifers, and the second in Nelore cows), evaluated fertility and some physiological variables of P4-based 7 d protocols beginning with EB (conventional protocol) or GnRH (16.8 µg of buserelin acetate) with adaptations (eCG and PGF on D6, and an additional PGF on D7), and with or without GnRH (8.4 µg) administration at the time of AI. As expected, higher ovulation rate after D0 (~67%) and more CL at PGF were observed in protocols starting with GnRH. Administration of EB at the beginning of the protocol was associated to greater luteolysis rate between D0 and PGF (~33%). At the time of implant withdrawal (D7), GnRH-based protocols induced bigger dominant follicles, and more estrus expression by the time of AI. However, only in heifers it was observed a bigger dominant follicle at the time of AI for GnRH group. Both (GnRH and EB) obtained satisfactory ovulation rate after AI (~92%). In heifers, no treatment effect was observed (EB vs. GnRH on D0, with vs. without GnRH at the time of AI) or interactions on pregnancy/AI (P/AI). However, in cows EB-based protocols obtained great P/AI when GnRH was administered at the time of AI (60.2% vs. 69.5%). In addition, this administration also increased P/AI of cows that did not express estrus during the protocol (no estrus: no GnRH = 48.2% vs. GnRH = 59.1%), although this effect was not observed in heifers. The third study evaluated ovarian dynamics and fertility of Nelore cows submitted to a P4-based 7 d FTAI protocol using 0.5 or 1.0 mg of estradiol cypionate (EC) at the time of implant removal (D7). Although 1.0 mg EC induced a smaller preovulatory follicle and lower ovulation rate after AI in multiparous, the P/AI was similar for both doses in this parity (multiparous: 0.5 mg = 58.4% vs. 1.0 mg = 59.0%). However, primiparous had lower P/AI when receiving 0.5 mg EC (primiparous: 0.5 mg = 30.2% vs. 1.0 mg = 53.6%). Therefore, both studies allowed a more refined knowledge regarding P4-based protocols in Bos indicus, especially on the efficiency of 7 d protocols and the inclusion of GnRH at the start or in the end of this type of synchronization protocol. Com o intuito de aprofundar o conhecimento sobre protocolos hormonais de sincronização da ovulação à base de progesterona (P4) em Bos indicus, três estudos foram realizados. O primeiro estudo, composto por três experimentos (dois em vacas Nelore não-lactantes, e um em novilhas Nelore), baseou-se em avaliações ultrassonográficas diárias e colheitas de sangue para P4 circulante em momentos pontuais [início do protocolo (D0) e administração da primeira prostaglandina F2α (PGF)] de protocolos à base de P4 diferindo em: indutor de emergência de onda folicular; duração do protocolo; e indutor da ovulação ao final do protocolo. A administração de 16,8 µg de acetato de buserelina (GnRH) ao início do protocolo promoveu maiores taxas de ovulação após o D0 (~55%) e também maior número de corpos lúteos (CL) no momento da PGF. Em alguns momentos, protocolos à base de GnRH estiveram associados a antecipação da emergência de onda folicular (~1,9 d após D0) e/ou maior folículo ovulatório, bem como maior P4 circulante no momento da PGF, e pontualmente em fêmeas que ovularam após a administração deste fármaco. Não obstante, protocolos à base de benzoato de estradiol (BE) promoveram atraso na emergência da onda folicular (~2,4 d após D0), porém ambos (GnRH e BE) estiveram associados a alta taxa de sincronização da emergência de onda folicular entre D0 e D5 do protocolo (~92%). Em contrapartida, protocolos curtos (5 d de implante de P4), apenas com a inserção de implante de P4 no D0, estiveram associados à baixa taxa de emergência de onda folicular (~30%). Entretanto, as três estratégias citadas acima promoveram alta taxa de ovulação ao final do protocolo (~85%), e não diferiram em relação ao horário da ovulação. O segundo estudo, composto por dois experimentos (um em novilhas Nelore e o segundo em vacas Nelore), testou a fertilidade e variáveis fisiológicas de protocolos à base de P4 com duração de 7 d iniciando com BE (convencional) ou com GnRH (16,8 µg de acetato de buserelina) com adaptações (eCG e PGF no D6, e uma PGF adicional no D7), e com ou sem a administração de GnRH (8,4 µg) no momento da IATF. Ambos também receberam cipionato de estradiol (CE) no D7. Como esperado, observou-se maior taxa de ovulação (~67%) após o D0 e maior número de CL na PGF em protocolos iniciando com GnRH. A administração de BE ao início do protocolo esteve associada a maior luteólise entre D0 e PGF (~33%). No momento da retirada do implante (D7), protocolos à base de GnRH promoveram maior folículo dominante, e além disso, mais expressão de estro até a IATF. Contudo, apenas em novilhas observou-se maior folículo dominante no momento da IATF para o grupo GnRH. Ambos protocolos (iniciados com GnRH ou BE) obtiveram altas taxas de ovulação após a IATF (~92%). Em novilhas, não se observou efeito de tratamento (BE vs. GnRH no D0, com vs. sem GnRH na IATF) ou interações sobre a prenhez/IA (P/IA). Entretanto, em vacas, protocolos à base de BE obtiveram maior P/IA quando houve a administração de GnRH no momento da IATF (60,2% vs. 69,5%). Além disso, GnRH na IATF também favoreceu a P/IA de vacas que não expressaram estro durante o protocolo (Sem cio: sem GnRH 48,2% vs. com GnRH 59,1%), apesar de não ter sido observado este efeito em novilhas. O terceiro estudo avaliou a fertilidade e dinâmica ovariana de vacas Nelore submetidas a protocolo à base de P4 com duração de 7 d utilizando 0,5 ou 1,0 mg de CE no momento da retirada do implante (D7). Apesar de 1,0 mg CE produzir menor folículo preovulatório e menor taxa de ovulação após a IA em multíparas, a P/IA foi semelhante para ambas as doses nesta categoria (multíparas: 0,5 mg = 58,4% vs. 1,0 mg = 59,0%). Contudo, primíparas tiveram menor P/IA ao receber 0,5 mg CE (primíparas: 0,5 mg = 30,2% vs. 1,0 mg = 53,6%). Portanto, os estudos permitiram um conhecimento mais refinado em relação a protocolos à base de P4 em Bos indicus, especialmente quanto à eficiência de protocolos de 7 d e inclusão de GnRH tanto ao início quanto ao final.

The West Iberia Lithosphere and Asthenosphere Structure (WILAS) project densely covered Portugal with broadband seismic stations for 2 yrs. Here we provide an overview of the deployment, and we characterize the network ambient noise and its sources. After explaining quality control, which includes the assessment of sensor orientation, we characterize the background noise in the short-period (SP), microseismic, and long-period (LP) bands. We observe daily variations of SP noise associated with anthropogenic activity. Temporary and permanent stations present very similar noise levels at all periods, except at horizontal LPs, where temporary stations record higher noise levels. We find that median noise levels are extremely homogeneous across the network in the microseismic band (3–20 s) but vary widely outside this range. The amplitudes of microseismic noise display a strong seasonal variation. The seasonality is dominated by very-long-period double-frequency microseisms (8 s), probably associated with winter storms. Stacks of ambient noise amplitudes show that some microseismic noise peaks are visible across the whole ground-motion spectrum, from 0.3 to 100 s. Periods of increased microseismic amplitudes generally correlate with ocean conditions offshore of Portugal. Some seismic records display an interesting 12 hr cycle of LP (100-s) noise, which might be related to atmospheric tides. Finally, we use plots of power spectral density versus time to monitor changes in LP instrumental response. This paper extends a Support Vector Machine (SVM) approach for the detection of seismic events, at the level of a seismic station. In previous works, it was shown that this approach produced excellent results, in terms of the Recall and Specificity measures, whether applied off-line or in a continuous scheme. The drawback was the time taken for achieving the detection, too large to be applied in a Early-Warning System (EWS). This paper shows that, by using alternative input features, a similar performance can be obtained, with a significant reduction in detection time. Additionally, it is experimentally proved that, whether off-line or in continuous operation, the best results are obtained when the SVM detector is trained with data originated from the respective seismic station.

This study describes research to design a seismic detection system to act at the level of a seismic station, providing a similar role to that of STA/LTA ratio-based detection algorithms. In a first step, Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs), trained in supervised mode, were tested. The sample data consisted of 2903 patterns extracted from records of the PVAQ station, one of the seismographic network’s stations of the Institute of Meteorology of Portugal (IM). Records’ spectral variations in time and characteristics were reflected in the input ANN patterns, as a set of values of power spectral density at selected frequencies. To ensure that all patterns of the sample data were within the range of variation of the training set, we used an algorithm to separate the universe of data by hyper-convex polyhedrons, determining in this manner a set of patterns that have a mandatory part of the training set. Additionally, an active learning strategy was conducted, by iteratively incorporating poorly classified cases in the training set. The proposed system best results, in terms of sensitivity and selectivity in the whole data ranged between 98% and 100%. These results compare very favourably with the ones obtained by the existing detection system, 50%, and with other approaches found in the literature. Subsequently, the system was tested in continuous operation for unseen (out of sample) data, and the SVM detector obtained 97.7% and 98.7% of sensitivity and selectivity, respectively. The classifier presented 88.4% and 99.4% of sensitivity and selectivity when applied to data of a different seismic station of IM. Due to the input features used, the average time taken for detection with this approach is in the order of 100 s. This is too long to be used in an early-warning system. In order to decrease this time, an alternative set of input features was tested. A similar performance was obtained, with a significant reduction in the average detection time (around 1.3 s). Additionally, it was experimentally proved that, whether off-line or in continuous operation, the best results are obtained when the SVM detector is trained with data originated from the respective seismic station.
