Constructing prediction intervals for time series forecasting is challenging, particularly when practitioners rely solely on point forecasts. While previous research has focused on creating increasingly efficient intervals, we argue that standard measures alone are inadequate. Beyond efficiency, prediction intervals must adapt their width based on the difficulty of the prediction while preserving coverage regardless of complexity. To address these issues, we propose combining Heteroscedastic Quantile Regression (HQR) with Width-Adaptive Conformal Inference (WACI). This integrated procedure guarantees theoretical coverage and enables interval widths to vary with predictive uncertainty. We assess its performance using both a synthetic example and a real world Electricity Price Forecasting scenario. Our results show that this combined approach meets or surpasses typical benchmarks for validity and efficiency, while also fulfilling important yet often overlooked practical requirements.

The study of Day-Ahead prices in the electricity market is one of the most popular problems in time series forecasting. Previous research has focused on employing increasingly complex learning algorithms to capture the sophisticated dynamics of the market. However, there is a threshold where increased complexity fails to yield substantial improvements. In this work, we propose an alternative approach by introducing an adaptive standardisation to mitigate the effects of dataset shifts that commonly occur in the market. By doing so, learning algorithms can prioritize uncovering the true relationship between the target variable and the explanatory variables. We investigate five distinct markets, including two novel datasets, previously unexplored in the literature. These datasets provide a more realistic representation of the current market context, that conventional datasets do not show. The results demonstrate a significant improvement across all five markets using the widely accepted learning algorithms in the literature (LEAR and DNN). In particular, the combination of the proposed methodology with the methodology previously presented in the literature obtains the best results. This significant advancement unveils new lines of research in this field, highlighting the potential of adaptive transformations in enhancing the performance of forecasting models.

HIP 9618 (HD 12572, TOI-1471, TIC 306263608) is a bright ($G=9.0$ mag) solar analogue. TESS photometry revealed the star to have two candidate planets with radii of $3.9 \pm 0.044$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 b) and $3.343 \pm 0.039$ $R_\oplus$ (HIP 9618 c). While the 20.77291 day period of HIP 9618 b was measured unambiguously, HIP 9618 c showed only two transits separated by a 680-day gap in the time series, leaving many possibilities for the period. To solve this issue, CHEOPS performed targeted photometry of period aliases to attempt to recover the true period of planet c, and successfully determined the true period to be 52.56349 d. High-resolution spectroscopy with HARPS-N, SOPHIE and CAFE revealed a mass of $10.0 \pm 3.1 M_\oplus$ for HIP 9618 b, which, according to our interior structure models, corresponds to a $6.8\pm1.4\%$ gas fraction. HIP 9618 c appears to have a lower mass than HIP 9618 b, with a 3-sigma upper limit of $< 18M_\oplus$. Follow-up and archival RV measurements also reveal a clear long-term trend which, when combined with imaging and astrometric information, reveal a low-mass companion ($0.08^{+0.12}_{-0.05} M_\odot$) orbiting at $26^{+19}_{-11}$ au. This detection makes HIP 9618 one of only five bright ($K<8$ mag) transiting multi-planet systems known to host a planet with $P>50$ d, opening the door for the atmospheric characterisation of warm ($T_{\rm eq}<750$ K) sub-Neptunes., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, 9 tables. Tensor networks, widely used for providing efficient representations of low-energy states of local quantum many-body systems, have been recently proposed as machine learning architectures which could present advantages with respect to traditional ones. In this work we show that tensor network architectures have especially prospective properties for privacy-preserving machine learning, which is important in tasks such as the processing of medical records. First, we describe a new privacy vulnerability that is present in feedforward neural networks, illustrating it in synthetic and real-world datasets. Then, we develop well-defined conditions to guarantee robustness to such vulnerability, which involve the characterization of models equivalent under gauge symmetry. We rigorously prove that such conditions are satisfied by tensor-network architectures. In doing so, we define a novel canonical form for matrix product states, which has a high degree of regularity and fixes the residual gauge that is left in the canonical forms based on singular value decompositions. We supplement the analytical findings with practical examples where matrix product states are trained on datasets of medical records, which show large reductions on the probability of an attacker extracting information about the training dataset from the model's parameters. Given the growing expertise in training tensor-network architectures, these results imply that one may not have to be forced to make a choice between accuracy in prediction and ensuring the privacy of the information processed., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures. Double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2) allow us to determine a lower limit of the masses of their components directly to test stellar models. In this work, our aim is to derive the orbital and physical parameters of GJ1284, a young SB2. We also revise the membership of this system and its two wide co-moving companions, GJ898 and GJ897AB, to a young moving group to assess, along with other youth indicators, their age. Afterwards, we compare the results from these analyses and the photometry of these systems with several pre-main-sequence evolutionary models. We determine the orbit of the GJ1284 system alongside its systemic velocity from high resolution spectra. Additionally, we use TESS photometry to derive the rotational period of the GJ1284 and its two wide companions. GJ1284 is a binary system located at approximately 16 pc with an eccentric orbit ($ e = 0.505 $) of 11.83 d period made up of an M2-M2.5 + M3-M3.5. The revised systemic velocity of $ \gamma = 0.84 \pm 0.14\,\mathrm{km\,s}^{-1} $ suggests that it is a member of the Local Association. The kinematics together with other activity and youth indicators imply an age of 110-800 Myr for this system and its two companions. The isochronal ages derived from the comparison of the photometry with several evolutionary models are younger than the age estimated from the activity indicators for the three co-moving systems. The masses for the components of GJ1284, derived from their luminosity and age using the different models, are not consistent with the masses derived from the photometry, except for the PARSEC models, but are compatible with dynamical masses of double-lined eclipsing binaries with similar ages and spectral types. The effect of magnetic activity in the form of spots can reconcile to some extent the photometric and dynamical masses, but is not considered in most of the evolutionary models., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

In Private Broadcasting, a single plaintext is broadcast to multiple recipients in an encrypted form, such that each recipient can decrypt locally. When the message is classical, a straightforward solution is to encrypt the plaintext with a single key shared among all parties, and to send to each recipient a copy of the ciphertext. Surprisingly, the analogous method is insufficient in the case where the message is quantum (i.e. in Quantum Private Broadcasting (QPB)). In this work, we give three solutions to $t$-recipient Quantum Private Broadcasting ($t$-QPB) and compare them in terms of key lengths. The first method is the independent encryption with the quantum one-time pad, which requires a key linear in the number of recipients, $t$. We show that the key length can be decreased to be logarithmic in $t$ by using unitary $t$-designs. Our main contribution is to show that this can be improved to a key length that is logarithmic in the dimension of the symmetric subspace, using a new concept that we define of symmetric unitary $t$-designs, that may be of independent interest.

How much does local and time-periodic dynamics resemble a random unitary? In the present work we address this question by using the Clifford formalism from quantum computation. We analyse a Floquet model with disorder, characterised by a family of local, time-periodic, random quantum circuits in one spatial dimension. We observe that the evolution operator enjoys an extra symmetry at times that are a half-integer multiple of the period. With this we prove that after the scrambling time, namely when any initial perturbation has propagated throughout the system, the evolution operator cannot be distinguished from a (Haar) random unitary when all qubits are measured with Pauli operators. This indistinguishability decreases as time goes on, which is in high contrast to the more studied case of (time-dependent) random circuits. We also prove that the evolution of Pauli operators displays a form of mixing. These results require the dimension of the local subsystem to be large. In the opposite regime our system displays a novel form of localisation, produced by the appearance of effective one-sided walls, which prevent perturbations from crossing the wall in one direction but not the other., Comment: 76 pages. 3 appendices. 9 figures. Identification schemes are interactive protocols typically involving two parties, a prover, who wants to provide evidence of his or her identity and a verifier, who checks the provided evidence and decide whether it comes or not from the intended prover. In this paper, we comment on a recent proposal for quantum identity authentication from Zawadzki, and give a concrete attack upholding theoretical impossibility results from Lo and Buhrman et al. More precisely, we show that using a simple strategyan adversary may indeed obtain non-negligible information on the shared identification secret. While the security of a quantum identity authentication scheme is not formally defined in [1], it is clear that such a definition should somehow imply that an external entity may gain no information on the shared identification scheme (even if he actively participates injecting messages in a protocol execution, which is not assumed in our attack strategy)., Comment: 8 pages, 0 figures, 1 protocol review

In this work, we prove a lower bound on the difference between the first and second singular values of quantum channels induced by random isometries, that is tight in the scaling of the number of Kraus operators. This allows us to give an upper bound on the difference between the first and second largest (in modulus) eigenvalues of random channels with same large input and output dimensions for finite number of Kraus operators $k\geq 169$. Moreover, we show that these random quantum channels are quantum expanders, answering a question posed by Hastings. As an application, we show that ground states of infinite 1D spin chains, which are well-approximated by matrix product states, fulfill a principle of maximum entropy., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

All Hamiltonian complexity results to date have been proven by constructing a local Hamiltonian whose ground state -- or at least some low-energy state -- is a "computational history state", encoding a quantum computation as a superposition over the history of the computation. We prove that all history-state Hamiltonians must be critical. More precisely, for any circuit-to-Hamiltonian mapping that maps quantum circuits to local Hamiltonians with low-energy history states, there is an increasing sequence of circuits that maps to a growing sequence of Hamiltonians with spectral gap closing at least as fast as O(1/n) with the number of qudits n in the circuit. This result holds for very general notions of history state, and also extends to quasi-local Hamiltonians with exponentially-decaying interactions. This suggests that QMA-hardness for gapped Hamiltonians (and also BQP-completeness of adiabatic quantum computation with constant gap) either require techniques beyond history state constructions. We consider a problem we call StateIsomorphism: given two quantum states of n qubits, can one be obtained from the other by rearranging the qubit subsystems? Our main goal is to study the complexity of this problem, which is a natural quantum generalisation of the problem StringIsomorphism. We show that StateIsomorphism is at least as hard as GraphIsomorphism, and show that these problems have a similar structure by presenting evidence to suggest that StateIsomorphism is an intermediate problem for QCMA. In particular, we show that the complement of the problem, StateNonIsomorphism, has a two message quantum interactive proof system, and that this proof system can be made statistical zero-knowledge. We consider also StabilizerStateIsomorphism (SSI) and MixedStateIsomorphism (MSI), showing that the complement of SSI has a quantum interactive proof system that uses classical communication only, and that MSI is QSZK-hard., Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures

It is now a well-known fact that the correlations arising from local dichotomic measurements on an entangled quantum state may exhibit intrinsically non-classical features. In this paper we delve into a comprehensive study of random instances of such bipartite correlations. The main question we are interested in is: given a quantum correlation, taken at random, how likely is it that it is truly non-explainable by a classical model? We show that, under very general assumptions on the considered distribution, a random correlation which lies on the border of the quantum set is with high probability outside the classical set. What is more, we are able to provide the Bell inequality certifying this fact. On the technical side, our results follow from (i) estimating precisely the "quantum norm" of a random matrix, and (ii) lower bounding sharply enough its "classical norm", hence proving a gap between the two. It is well known that quantum correlations for bipartite dichotomic measurements are those of the form $\gamma=(\langle u_i,v_j\rangle)_{i,j=1}^n$, where the vectors $u_i$ and $v_j$ are in the unit ball of a real Hilbert space. In this work we study the probability of the nonlocal nature of these correlations as a function of $\alpha=\frac{m}{n}$, where the previous vectors are sampled according to the Haar measure in the unit sphere of $\mathbb R^m$. In this work we study a version of the general question of how well a Haar distributed orthogonal matrix can be approximated by a random gaussian matrix. Here, we consider a gaussian random matrix $Y_n$ of order $n$ and apply to it the Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization procedure by columns to obtain a Haar distributed orthogonal matrix $U_n$. If $F_i^m$ denotes the vector formed by the first $m$-coordinates of the $i$th row of $Y_n-\sqrt{n}U_n$ and $\alpha=\frac{m}{n}$, our main result shows that the euclidean norm of $F_i^m$ converges exponentially fast to $\sqrt{ \left(2-\frac{4}{3} \frac{(1-(1 -\alpha)^{3/2})}{\alpha}\right)m}$, up to negligible terms. To show the extent of this result, we use it to study the convergence of the supremum norm $\epsilon_n(m)=\sup_{1\leq i \leq n, 1\leq j \leq m} |y_{i,j}- \sqrt{n}u_{i,j}|$ and we find a coupling that improves by a factor $\sqrt{2}$ the recently proved best known upper bound of $\epsilon_n(m)$. We consider the class of (N+1)-partite states suitable for protocols where there is a powerful party, the authority, and the other N parties play the same role, namely the state of their system live in the symmetric Hilbert space. We show that, within this scenario, there is a "maximally entangled state" that can be transform by a LOCC protocol into any other state. In addition, we show how to make the protocol efficiently including the construction of the state and discuss security issues for possible applications to cryptographic protocols. Entropic uncertainty relations are quantitative characterizations of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, which make use of an entropy measure to quantify uncertainty. In quantum cryptography, they are often used as convenient tools in security proofs. We propose a new entropic uncertainty relation. It is the first such uncertainty relation that lower bounds the uncertainty in the measurement outcome for all but one choice for the measurement from an arbitrarily large (but specifically chosen) set of possible measurements, and, at the same time, uses the min-entropy as entropy measure, rather than the Shannon entropy. This makes it especially suited for quantum cryptography. As application, we propose a new quantum identification scheme in the bounded quantum storage model. It makes use of our new uncertainty relation at the core of its security proof. In contrast to the original quantum identification scheme proposed by Damg{\aa}rd et al., our new scheme also offers some security in case the bounded quantum storage assumption fails hold. Specifically, our scheme remains secure against an adversary that has unbounded storage capabilities but is restricted to non-adaptive single-qubit operations.
