International audience; Measuring vocal-tract acoustics is one key issue for singing voice characterization. We aim at developing a non-invasive experimental tool that would assess the singer's vocal-tract acoustical behavior during singing. Grounded on previous impedance measurements, a broadband external acoustic source (chirp signal) loads vocal tract at the lips while phonating. Both chirp and voice signals are recorded by a microphone. An open-mouth condition measurement calibrated by a closed-mouth condition provides vocal-tract frequency response, from which resonance frequencies and quality factors can be estimated. A challenging aspect is to separate voice from chirp signal. We propose a new method for signal separation and test it numerically. Its applicability to real singing is then explored on vowels sung by a modern-style singer.First step consists in estimating voice fundamental frequency on recorded voice+chirp signal. Secondly, an informed high-order chirplet analysis is performed on this signal to eliminate voice, recovering only modulated chirp. Numerical simulations, based on synthesizing vowel [a] sung at 450Hz while adding a 3dB-lower chirp, show that the method is accurate enough for resonance frequencies (resp. quality factors) not to deviate by less than 3 cents (resp. 5%).The method is applied on recordings of a modern singer and singing teacher. The subject was asked to sing vowel [a] with different voice qualities and for several pitches (F3, G3, A3). Measurement was done during a one-second sustained phonation (voice condition) and during a following closed-glottis condition with instruction to keep vocal tract in same position (silence condition). Voice condition forces to apply voice-chirp separation method, on contrary to silence condition. Results show that the closed-glottis instruction causes additional vocal tract adjustments, even for a trained singer. The differences in resonances between registers are explored as a function of pitch and voice quality.

National audience; Dans le but de caractériser in vivo les résonances du conduit vocal et de quantifier leur rôle dans certaines productions vocales, un dispositif expérimental en développement s’appuie sur une excitation acoustique au niveau des lèvres par un sinus glissant linéaire (chirp) couplée à un microphone captant la pression aux lèvres ou à distance. Le signal mesuré est la somme du chirp filtré par le conduit vocal, d’un signal de voix (que l’on suppose harmonique et stationnaire) et de bruit éventuel. L’estimation des résonances du conduit vocal (en fréquence et facteur de qualité) demande alors une séparation des signaux permettant la reconstruction de la modulation d’amplitude du chirp. La connaissance a priori de la trajectoire du chirp dans le plan temps-fréquence et des hypothèses sur le signal voisé suggèrent l’utilisation de la transformée dite chirplet, généralisation de la transformée de Gabor intégrant la variation de fréquence instantanée (chirp rate), pour séparer les arêtes du plan temps- fréquence qui se croisent avec des pentes différentes. Dans un premier temps, l’amplitude du chirp est supposée localement constante sur la trame d’analyse avec des résultats intéressants en termes de séparation et de reconstruction du chirp. Puis, compte-tenu de la courte durée du chirp dans le contexte de la caractérisation du conduit vocal, nous cherchons à tirer parti de chirplets d’ordres supérieurs pour traiter les fortes modulations d’amplitude. Nous montrons que la famille des fonctions de Hermite (incluant la Gaussienne) constitue un choix pertinent de chirplets pour reconstruire fidèlement la modulation d’amplitude avec de bonnes propriétés de stabilité numérique. Finalement, l’utilisation de deux chirp rates complémentaires est proposé pour traiter le cas du croisement entre l’arête suivi (le chirp) et une harmonique de la voix. Le choix des valeurs des paramètres d’analyse est discuté, notamment celui de la taille de la fenêtre d’analyse.

National audience; La caractérisation des résonances du conduit vocal est indispensable pour comprendre l'acoustique de la voix. Les méthodes de mesure s’appuyant sur un signal d'excitation à large bande et une mesure de pression au niveau des lèvres offrent un bon compromis entre précision, rapidité et intrusivité. Nous abordons ici quelques conseils pratiques pour réaliser de telles mesures et obtenir des estimations précises des fréquences et des facteurs de qualité des résonances. La méthode de mesure est validée par comparaison avec des modèles numériques (lignes de transmission avec pertes visco-thermiques et rayonnement) et avec différentes mesures d’impédances, tout d’abord sur un simple tube métallique puis sur des maquettes simplifiées de voyelles. L'analyse modale (fréquences et facteurs de qualité) est réalisée avec la méthode des cercles de Kennelly exploitant à la fois l’amplitude et la phase des réponses en fréquence, robuste face au problème de proximité entre résonances et anti-résonances. D’autre part, étant donné les niveaux sonores émis par les chanteurs, nous expérimentons la possibilité d’éloigner le microphone (l’excitation restant au niveau des lèvres). On montre que le microphone peut être placé n'importe où dès lors que le rapport signal/bruit est suffisamment bon : sous hypothèse de rayonnement monopolaire, le modèle de mesure reste valable mais les estimations deviennent plus sensibles aux possibles interférences d'autres sources acoustiques. Les fréquences de résonance et les facteurs de qualité obtenus à partir de mesures avec un microphone jusqu'à 30 cm des lèvres s'écartent de moins de 0,2 % et 10 % respectivement des valeurs de référence (mesure aux lèvres), validant le principe d’une caractérisation avec un microphone éloigné des lèvres. Enfin, on discute les limites de la mesure avec excitation aux lèvres pour des configurations vocaliques avec constriction forte du conduit vocal.

Le lien entre la production de son par les instruments à anches et les actions du musicien est étudié à travers des simulations numériques appliquées à un modèle physique et complétées par des expériences. On se concentre sur la dynamique non linéaire du modèle, comme l’un des enjeux majeurs reliant les caractéristiques acoustiques passives de l’instrument à sa jouabilité. Des interprétations liées à la facture instrumentale mais aussi à des applications musicales temps-réel de la synthèse sont proposées. On développe une approche numérique basée sur deux méthodes. Premièrement, la synthèse temporelle permet des études à grande échelle des phénomènes transitoires et des régimes établis, avec l’avantage d’être interprétable directement en termes d’actions du musicien. Deuxièmement, la Méthode d’Équilibrage Harmonique associée avec la continuation (Méthode Asymptotique Numérique) permet d’explorer l’espace des paramètres de contrôle en suivant les branches de solutions périodiques stables et instables. Cette méthode met en évidence des bifurcations qui marquent l’apparition ou la disparition de régimes oscillants. Les bifurcations de Hopf et fold sont suivies par continuation, en codimension 2. On compare la dynamique simulée numériquement aux phénomènes observés en situation de jeu et mesurés par un bec instrumenté. Dans ce cadre, des formes archétypales de régimes d’oscillations sont étudiées et liées aux paramètres de contrôle du musicien que sont la pression d’alimentation et l’appui de la lèvre sur l’anche. Les régimes à deux états dits standard, inversé, et double, sont analysés expérimentalement et numériquement. On étudie également le phénomène de multistabilité, où plusieurs régimes sont stables pour une seule valeur des paramètres de contrôle. Le régime établi dépend alors de l'histoire du système : oscillations préétablies, changement de doigté, variations des paramètres de contrôles. On propose de prendre ces considérations en compte dans une description globale des régimes produits par un modèle d'instrument à anche.

International audience; The measurement of vocal tract resonances is crucial to understand voice acoustics. Their characterization using a broadband excitation signal and pressure measurements both at the lips is a good compromise between accuracy, speed and intrusiveness. In this paper we address some practical guidelines for performing such measurements in order to provide reliable estimates for resonance frequencies and quality factors. We also experiment the possibility to move away microphone from excitation at the lips, with a cylindrical waveguide as ideal vocal tract and its line-transmission model. Using a far-field model in which pressure decreases as the inverse of the distance from excitation at the lips, the microphone could be placed anywhere as soon as the Signal-to-Noise Ratio is good enough: measurements become more sensitive to interferences with other acoustics sources. Modal analysis is performed with a robust method using both amplitude and phase of measured functions. Resonance frequencies and quality factors estimations at distances up to 30 cm deviates by less than 0.2% and 10% respectively from reference measurement at the lips validating accurate characterization with a distant microphone from the lips.

International audience; In woodwind instruments, lateral holes or toneholes, are used to reduce the effective length of the instrument in order to increase the number of notes that can be played. Over the time, instrument makers have noticed that details of the tonehole's geometry play a major role in the musical quality of woodwind instruments, a change in geometry impacts parameters such as: tuning, volume, and timbre. From the scientific point of view, it is of interest to link the tonehole's geometry to the acoustical properties of the produced sound. A single tonehole can be represented by a lumped T circuit comprised of a shunt and series impedance. In order to determine the values of these impedances, several methods have been developped, [Keefe 1982, Nederveen 1998, Dubos et al. 1999, Dalmont et al. 2002, Dickens 2007, Lefebvre and Scavone 2012], these include theoretical, experimental, and numerical approaches. In this study a new method is proposed and compared to the method developed by Dalmont et al. (2002). The new approach is based on two measurements of the input impedance instead of the measurement of the input and transfer impedances of the methodology proposed by Dalmont et al. Also the tonehole position does not need to be at the middle of the main tube. Simulations of the experiments of both methologies were performed to compare the effect of the uncertainty over the accuracy of the results. These results can be used for the design, and improvement of woodwind instruments.

International audience; The effect of the tonehole lattice cutoff frequency of a conical resonator on sound production is explored using numerical synthesis: time-domain integration, as well as harmonic balance method combined with continuation (MANLAB). The tonehole lattice cutoff frequency f_\textrmc separates the passive response of the resonator into two bands. Below f_\textrmc, an acoustical wave traveling down the main branch of the duct, upon arrival at the first open tonehole, either radiates into the surrounding field, or reflect back into the main bore of the instrument. However, above f_\textrmc, the wave is no longer evanescent and is able to propagate farther into the lattice. In this work, three resonators are designed to have drastically different cutoff frequency behavior: two resonators with cutoff frequencies at 700 and 900 Hz and a simple cone with no tonehole lattice are proposed to compare the effect of the cutoff frequency on sound production. Numerical synthesis shows that some sound production features are almost unaffected by cutoff behavior, such as oscillation thresholds and values of the control parameters leading to the production of certain registers. However, the spectral centroid, an indicator of tonal brightness, seems greatly influenced by the cutoff frequency behavior. The severity of the cutoff, which relates to the overall height reduction of impedance peaks above the cutoff frequency, has a greater impact on the spectral content of the produced sound that the frequency at which cutoff occurs. Thus, taking into account the cutoff frequency behavior in the development of an instrument can be a way to control its spectral features without affecting the main sound production characteristics.

International audience; The story of the "cylindrical saxophone" started with Benade (1988). The basic idea is that when the length of the missing part of a truncated cone is smaller than the wavelength, and therefore smaller than the length of the truncated cone, the behavior of a conical reed instrument has similarities with that of a cylindrical pipe excited by a reed on its side, at an intermediate location. The shorter part of the cylinder has to be equal to that of the missing part of the cone. This similarity allowed to get caricatures of the pressure waveform inside the mouthpiece, in the form of a Helmholtz (2-state motion), which is well known for bowed string instruments. However some paradoxes remain with this analogy. If the waveform is a Helmholtz motion, the negative pressure episode has a duration corresponding to the resonance frequency of the short length, i.e., a frequency which does not fulfill the condition of the analogy. Furthermore using the simplest approximation deduced from the analogy, the waveform of the radiated sound by the conical instrument should be a Dirac comb. This means that all the Fourier coefficients have the same magnitude, without missing harmonics. After a short review of the literature, these paradoxes will be discussed.

National audience; La synthèse sonore en temps réel des instruments à vent par modèles physiques demande d’approximer une mesure ou un calcul de l’impédance d’entrée à l’aide d’une batterie de filtres digitaux à relativement bas coût de calcul. Dans l’idéal, la détermination des paramètres des filtres devrait être rapide, sans que cela ne prétérite la qualité de l’approximation dans toute la bande passante utile du filtre, tout en étant robuste en présence de mesures bruitées. De plus, le filtre doit impérativement avoir un comportement passif à toute fréquence, y compris au-delà de la dernière fréquence mesurée. Il apparaît que l’analyse de Prony, ainsi que la méthode LSCE (Least Squares Complex Exponentials) qui en est dérivée, permet d’obtenir une batterie de filtres respectant toutes ces exigences, moyennant quelques aménagements. Les fréquences modales complexes sont approximées dans le domaine temporel, alors que les coefficients modaux complexes sont ajustés par moindres carrés dans le domaine spectral. On introduit des points fictifs au-delà de la dernière fréquence mesurée, de manière que l’approximation par les moindres carrés converge vers une solution assurant la passivité du filtre à toute fréquence. Une méthode de reconstruction de l’impédance d’entrée en basse fréquence complète cette étude. La méthode est validée à l’aide de mesures d’impédance de clarinette, de saxophone et de trompette. Pour la clarinette, par exemple, on peut simuler tous les doigtés avec un filtre numérique ne demandant pas plus de 80 multiplications par pas de temps, pour une fréquence de coupure de 4 kHz et une fréquence d’échantillonnage de 44.1 kHz.

International audience; It is well known that for a given note the position of woodwind toneholes can be chosen by the maker in a certain portion of the instrument, provided that the radius is properly chosen: a wide radius needs to be located further from the reed than a narrow one. In our work a simplified problem with one radiating source only is investigated: the problem of a short diaphragm at the end of a cylindrical tube, excited by a clarinet-like reed/mouthpiece. We consider tubes of different lengths provided with diaphragms of different radii, in order to keep a fixed playing frequency. Obviously the power radiated by the orifice decreases when the diaphragm radius decreases. But it is not intuitive that when the radius is large enough, the power is found to be almost independent of the radius. Indeed it can be shown that the radiated power depends only on the output flow rate. Moreover energy considerations show that the ratio between the input pressure and the output flow rate does not depend on the length, thus on the diaphragm radius. Finally when losses are ignored, the input pressure depends on the excitation pressure in the mouth but is independent of the tube. At low level of excitation, this simple explanation is confirmed by both numerical calculation and experiment, but experiment confirms the importance of nonlinear effects with flow separation due to sharp corners.

International audience; The question of the formants in saxophone sounds involves several paradoxes. The analogy with "cylindrical saxophones", i.e. cylindrical tubes excited at a given proportion of the length, is classical and can be extended to the bowed string. This analogy leads to an approximation of the spectrum of the pressure inside the mouthpiece valid only at low frequencies. Nevertheless it gives good results even at higher frequency, this paradox being now understood. The spectrum of the external pressure contains formants which are different from that of the internal spectrum. The question of what is the cause of the formants remains open.

International audience; Combustion noise still remains a major concern when designing engines for vehicles passenger comfort. Among most efficient strategies for reducing Diesel knock are modifications of engine parameters used for controlling combustion processes. This work aims at giving guidelines when controlling these processes to improve customers’ combustion noise perception. A methodology is described, which establish a relation between the engine tuning parameters, directly linked to cylinder pressure evolutions, and their effects on perception. We use cyclic Wiener filters allowing realistic overall Diesel noise re-synthesises from cylinder pressure signals. Cylinder pressures are split into elementary components, leading to different types (and patterns) of physically admissible modifications. A perceptive test is then conducted to establish a perceptive space of Diesel combustion noise based on some different pressure cylinder noticeable patterns. An issue is a better understanding of the subjective effects, particularly rhythmic ones, produced by such pulse trains.

International audience; For the simplest model of clarinet-like instruments, leading to the iterated map scheme, the solving of the nonlinear characteristic equation involves the inversion of the modified characteristic function linking the incoming wave to the outcoming one. The inversion can be problematic when the reed opening is large, i.e. when the associated dimensionless parameter is larger than unity, the inverse function being multi-valued. The problem was already noticed by Gokhstein (1981) concerning oboes or bassoons. To overcome this difficulty, several discretization schemes can be found, e.g. by modelling a reed as a one degree of freedom oscillator, or by modelling the air in the mouthpiece as a simple spring. The use of these schemes at their limits allows studying how the choice between the solutions can be done when using the classical scheme with the multi-valued function for the incoming/outcoming waves. The case of conical reed instruments is particularly investigated.

International audience; The playing frequency of a reed instrument is generally mainly imposed by the resonator. That said, numerous other factors have an influence on the playing frequency. Among those, the volume velocity pulsated by the reed must be taken into account in the models as it lowers significantly the playing frequency. At first order, this volume velocity can be taken into account by adding an equivalent volume of about 1.cm3 at the entrance of the pipe. However, the concept of equivalent volume is theoretically only valid for linear vibrations i.e., for the clarinet, for the non beating reed regime. In the beating regime, this volume is likely to vary quite a lot with the mouth pressure which can lead to intonation problems. In addition, this volume depends much on the reed opening, but experiments performed with an artificial mouth show that for usual openings (0.3-0.7 mm) the intonation remains surprisingly stable. This suggests that the reed and mouthpiece makers know how to control this problem by a well chosen design of the lay. A counter-example is obtained by using a ClaripatchTM especially designed so that intonation is particularly difficult to control.

International audience; A characteristic of woodwind instruments is the cutoff frequency of their tone-hole lattice. Benade proposed a practical definition using the measurement of the input impedance, for which at least two frequency bands appear. The first one is a stop band, while the second is a pass band. The value of this cutoff frequency, which is a global quantity, depends on the whole geometry of the instrument, but is rather independent of the fingering. This seems to justify the consideration of a woodwind with several open holes as a periodic lattice. However the holes on a clarinet are very irregular. The paper investigates first the experimental method of determination of the cutoff frequency, then the question of the acoustical regularity: an acoustically regular lattice of tone holes is defined as a lattice built with T-shaped cells of equal eigenfrequencies. Then the paper discusses the possibility of division of a real lattice into cells of equal eigenfrequencies. It is shown that it is not straightforward but possible, explaining the apparent paradox of the Benade theory. From this division, a narrow range of possible constant cutoff frequencies is found, and it is in very good accordance with the experimental results from impedance measurements. When considering the open holes from the input of the instrument to its output, the distances between holes are enlarged together with their radii: this explains the relative constancy of the eigenfrequencies.

National audience; Un algorithme de synthèse compatible temps-réel, utilisant une décomposition modale ajustée sur les pics d'impédance d'entrée d'un instrument de type clarinette, est proposé. La comparaison avec la résolution effectuée hors temps-réel par un solveur à pas de temps adaptatif met en lumière une très bonne adéquation entre les méthodes en régime permanent. Une influence significative du nombre de modes pris en compte est observée pour les deux méthodes, imputable à la troncature des décompositions modales. Celle-ci a trois effets : un premier effet lié à la représentation d'un système propagatif par une somme finie de sous-systèmes à réponses instantanées, un deuxième concernant la valeur des pics d'admittance qui a donc une influence sur le taux d'harmoniques pairs de la pression interne, et un troisième effet lié à la valeur à haute fréquence de l'impédance modale tronquée qui tend par construction vers zéro donc vers un système non dissipatif. Plutôt qu'une augmentation du nombre de modes (peu intéressant d'un point de vue du coût de calcul), il est proposé d'ajouter un terme correctif permettant de simultanément rétablir une hauteur correcte des pics d'admittance en dessous de la fréquence de la troncature de la décomposition modale et d'assurer la décroissance à l'infini du coefficient de réflexion et l'absence de réflexion instantanée de la fonction de réflexion associés à la décomposition modale tronquée.

L'objectif de l’étude est de caractériser les signaux transitoires correspondant aux fractures à partir d’enregistrements piezoelectriques afin de pister leur apparition à l’aide d’une analyse temps fréquence. Les résultats présentent la partie préliminaire de l’étude sur le thorax et les fractures de cote.

Sound synthesis can be developed using physics-based modelling of the musical instruments. These methods need the description of the various parts of sound production mechanism, in particular a model of the acoustic resonator that have to be simple enough due to the real-time constraint.
