Abstract

Composite materials constituted by Argel and Volclay clay tactoids covered up with α-Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles exhibited enhanced electrochemical properties as compared to pure α-Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles. In fact, this material exhibited lower impedance for charge injection at the electrode/composite interface but larger resistance for charge diffusion than the αNi-A and αNi-V composites. The negative charge on the clay layers seems to favor the deposition of large amounts of nanoparticles on the tactoids surface providing efficient pathways for charge diffusion, improving the electrochemical response while stabilizing nickel hydroxide in the alpha phase, as confirmed by the charge capacity of 500-600 mAh. g-1(Ni). Thus, the composites have good perspectives as electrocatalytic materials for amperometric sensors and energy conversion devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
