24 pp. (1991)., We have measured the cross section and $Q^2$-dependence of the reaction γγ→ multihadrons, using the CELLO detector at DESY, for visible final-state masses between 4 and 9 GeV. The data are well fitted by an incoherent sum of Generalised Vector Meson Dominance and Quark Parton Model terms, but at lowQ2 require the addition of a third component which resembles the QPM but is less two-jet-like. With and without this term, the GVDM cross section atQ2=0 is found to be 200±20 and 250±25 nb, respectively.

- Abstract
Asymptomatic dysfunction of cardiac pacing systems is not uncommonly detected using long-term ambulatory monitoring techniques. We report two patients with atrial and ventricular sensing abnormalities noted only on Holter monitoring. Multiple empirical attempts at pacemaker reprogramming based on deductive analysis of the pacing anomaly were unsuccessful. Through the use of a new digital recording system that allowed collection of surface electrocardiographic data, intracardiac electrograms, and Marker Channel™ data a correct diagnosis was made (pacing lead insulation failure). This new recording system has the advantage of significantly improving diagnostic sensitivity and resulting in cost savings. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

37. Comparison of the adaptive functioning of children prenatally exposed to alcohol to a nonexposed clinical sample.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Several studies show impairments in the social and adaptive behaviors of children prenatally exposed to alcohol. However, there remains limited consensus on whether the alcohol exposure directly affects social functioning or whether its effect is mediated by deficits in IQ. In addition, no studies have investigated whether deficits in social functioning are significantly more pronounced in children prenatally exposed to alcohol than in children referred to psychiatric treatment who were not prenatally exposed. We explored the effect of alcohol exposure on social and adaptive functioning and explored whether or not social and adaptive functioning are significantly more impaired in children prenatally exposed to alcohol than in a clinical sample of children. METHODS: A sample of 33 alcohol-exposed children was compared with a sample of 33 clinic-referred nonexposed children. The groups were compared on measures of communication, daily living skills, and socialization. The groups were matched on sex, age, IQ, and outpatient or inpatient status. RESULTS: Analyses revealed that the prenatally alcohol-exposed children did not differ significantly from the nonexposed children in any of the domains of adaptive functioning. However, with age, exposed children showed a more rapid decline in socialization standard scores compared with the nonexposed clinical sample. CONCLUSIONS: Young children who were exposed to alcohol prenatally show deficits in all domains of adaptive functioning. Although these deficits do not seem to differ from those exhibited by young children with psychiatric problems but no prenatal exposure, deficits in socialization behavior of prenatally exposed children may become more significant with age. The article presents a study which was undertaken to examine the stability or consistency of psychiatric diagnoses in a hospital setting. Concurrence in diagnostic classification from admission to discharge was determined for approximately 500 psychiatric patients in two navel hospitals. Characteristics of the patients, treatment, and disposition were related to stability or instability of diagnoses, and the consistency among ins dividual psychiatrists as to factors associated with change or no change in their diagnoses were examined.

We have measured the total normalized cross section R for the process e+e− → hadrons at centre-of-mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV based on an integrated luminosity of 60.3 pb−1. The data are well described by the standard SU(3)c⊗SU(2)L⊗U(1) model with the production of the five known quarks. No open production of a sixth quark with charge 2/3 or 1/3 occurs below a centre-of-mass energy of 46.6 or 46.3 GeV, respectively. A fitting procedure which takes the correlations between measurements into account was used to determine the electroweak mixing angle sin2θw and the strong coupling constant αs(S) in second-order QCD. We applied this procedure to the CELLO data and in addition included the data from other experiments at PETRA and PEP. Both fits give consistent results. The fit to the combined data yields αs(342 GeV2) = 0.165±0.030, and sin2θw = 0.236±0.020. Fixing sin2θw at the world average value of 0.23 yields αs(342GeV2) = 0.169±0.025.

Using the CELLO detector, we have measured cross sections for the processγγ→π
+ π− in the mass range 0.75–1.9 GeV/c2 . A partial wave fit to the data indicates the presence of a sizeableS-wave amplitude with signs of resonant behaviour. Values for the γγ width of thef2 (1270) are given, showing the model-dependence of this quantity. At higher dipion masses, the model of Brodsky and Lepage is found to give an order of magnitude description of the data.- Published

The differential cross sections, extended to the kinematical limit and measured with high accuracy, are found to be in good agreement with previously reported results. We present an analysis of strange particle production frome
+ e- annihilation into multihadronic final states. The experiment was performed with the CELLO detector at the PETRA storage ring at DESY, the data was taken at a centre of mass energy of 35 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 86 pb-1 . The particlesKS 0 ,K*± and ? have been identified by their characteristic decays, and differential cross sections for their production have been obtained. From a comparison ofKS 0 andK*± rates the Lund vector meson suppression parameterV/(V+P)S has been determined.- Published

The reactione
+ e− →e+ e− π+ π− π0 in the untagged mode has been measured with the CELLO detector at PETRA. The cross section is dominated by exclusivea2 (1320) production, whose radiative width is determined to beΓγγ =1.00±0.07(stat.)±0.15(syst.)keV. An angular correlation analysis indicates pure helicity 2 with an upper limit on the helicity 0 contribution of 8.2% (at 95% c.l.). Excitation of the pseudotensor meson π2 0 (1670) is observed for the first time in this reaction. The π2 radiative width and its dependence on interference effects are studied.- Published

We have searched for resonance production in the reaction ???K
s 0 Kp. No signal was found for the?c and an upper limit for the radiative withkeV (95% c.l.) is obtained. For the glueball candidate ?(1440) (previouslyi) the upper limit
is derived. In the tagged data sample resonance formation of a spin 1 state at 1420 MeV is observed, which is absent in the untagged data. The mass and width of this state are consistent with those of thef

- Abstract
The production of thef
0 in two photon collisions, with the subsequent decayf0 ?p+ p- has been observed in the CELLO detector at PETRA. Thef0 peak was found to lie on a dipion continuum and to be shifted downwards in mass by ?50 MeV/c2 . The pp mass spectrum from 0.8 to 1.5 GeV/c2 was well fitted by the model of Mennessier using only a unitarised Born amplitude and helicity 2f0 amplitude. The previously observed mass shift and distortion of thef0 peak are explained by strong interference between the Born andf0 amplitudes. The only free parameter in the fit of the data to the model is the radiative widthG?? (f0 ). It was found that:G?? (f0 )=2.5±0.1±0.5 keV where the first (second) quoted errors are statistical (systematic).- Published

- Abstract
We have determined the cross section for γγ→π
+ π+ π− π− in a way free of assumptions about the relative contributions fromρ0 ρ0 ,ρ0 2π and 4π (uncorrelated phase space). We find a sharp onset above threshold and a rather high cross section of about 200 nb aroundWγγ =1.5 GeV which consists to about 40% ofρ0 ρ0 production with sizeable contributions fromρ0 2π and 4π (PS). The total cross section as well as theρ0 ρ0 content fall rather fast at higher c.m. energies. Attempts to explain this behaviour in terms of production of known resonances are not successful so far. The angular distributions do not show any significant structure pointing to resonance formation in the 4π-system. Only theρ0 -meson is observed in the moment analysis. The decay distributions of theρ0 for forward produced rhos are fairly consistent with helicity conservation of the produced rhos in accordance with the VDM picture.- Published
