Strip steel serves as a crucial raw material in numerous industries, including aircraft and automobile manufacturing. Surface defects in strip steel can degrade the performance, quality, and appearance of industrial steel products. Detecting surface defects in steel strip products is challenging due to the low contrast between defects and background, small defect targets, as well as significant variations in defect sizes. To address these challenges, a two-stage attention-based feature-enhancement network (TAFENet) is proposed, wherein the first-stage feature-enhancement procedure utilizes an attentional convolutional fusion module with convolution to combine all four-level features and then strengthens the features of different levels via a residual spatial-channel attention connection module (RSC). The second-stage feature-enhancement procedure combines three-level features using an attentional self-attention fusion module and then strengthens the features using a RSC attention module. Experiments on the NEU-DET and GC10-DET datasets demonstrated that the proposed method significantly improved detection accuracy, thereby confirming the effectiveness and generalization capability of the proposed method. Tea disease detection is crucial for improving the agricultural circular economy. Deep learning-based methods have been widely applied to this task, and the main idea of these methods is to extract multiscale coarse features of diseases using the backbone network and fuse these features through the neck for accurate disease detection. This paper proposes a novel tea disease detection method that enhances feature expression of the backbone network and the feature fusion capability of the neck: (1) constructing an inverted residual self-attention module as a backbone plugin to capture the long-distance dependencies of disease spots on the leaves; and (2) developing a channel–spatial attention module with residual connection in the neck network to enhance the contextual semantic information of fused features in disease images and eliminate complex background noise. For the second step, the proposed channel–spatial attention module uses Residual Channel Attention (RCA) to enhance inter-channel interactions, facilitating discrimination between disease spots and normal leaf regions, and employs spatial attention (SA) to enhance essential areas of tea diseases. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieved accuracy and mAP scores of 92.9% and 94.6%, respectively. Steel surface defects have a significant impact on the quality and performance of many industrial products and cause huge economic losses. Therefore, it is meaningful to detect steel surface defects in real time. To improve the detection performance of steel surface defects with variable scales and complex backgrounds, in this paper, a novel method for detecting steel surface defects through a multiscale local and global feature fusion mechanism is proposed. The proposed method uses a convolution operation with a downsampling mechanism in the convolutional neural network model to obtain rough multiscale feature maps. Then, a context-extraction block (CEB) is proposed to adopt self-attention learning on the feature maps extracted by the convolution operation at each scale to obtain multiscale global context information to make up for the shortcomings of convolutional neural networks (CNNs), thus forming a novel multiscale self-attention mechanism. Afterwards, using the feature pyramid structure, multiscale feature maps are fused to improve multiscale object detection. Finally, the channel and spatial attention module and the WIOU (Wise Intersection over Union) loss function are introduced. The model achieved 78.2% and 71.9% mAP respectively on the NEU-DET and GC10-DET dataset. The use of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for crowd counting has made significant progress in recent years; however, effectively addressing the scale variation and complex backgrounds remain challenging tasks. To address these challenges, we propose a novel Multi-Scale Guided Self-Attention (MSGSA) network that utilizes self-attention mechanisms to capture multi-scale contextual information for crowd counting. The MSGSA network consists of three key modules: a Feature Pyramid Module (FPM), a Scale Self-Attention Module (SSAM), and a Scale-aware Feature Fusion (SFA). By integrating self-attention mechanisms at multiple scales, our proposed method captures both global and local contextual information, leading to an improvement in the accuracy of crowd counting. We conducted extensive experiments on multiple benchmark datasets, and the results demonstrate that our method outperforms most existing methods in terms of counting accuracy and the quality of the generated density map. Our proposed MSGSA network provides a promising direction for efficient and accurate crowd counting in complex backgrounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
