Abstract

The Stone-Wales defect is a well-known and significant defective structure in carbon materials, impacting their mechanical, chemical, and electronic properties. Recently, a novel metal-carbon nanomaterial named Volleyballene has been discovered, characterized by a C-C bond bridging two carbon pentagons. Using first-principles calculations, a stable Stone-Wales-defective counterpart of Volleyballene, exhibiting $T_h$ symmetry, has been proposed by rotating the C-C bond by 90${\deg}$. Although its binding energy per atom is slightly higher than Volleyballene (${\Delta}E_b$ = 0.009 eV/atom), implying marginally lower structural stability, it can maintain its bond structure until the effective temperature reaches about 1538.56 K, indicating greater thermodynamic stability. Additionally, its highest vibration frequency is 1346.2 cm$^{-1}$, indicating strong chemical bond strength. A theoretical analysis of the Sc$_{20}$C$_{60}$+Sc$_{20}$C$_{60}$ binary systems highlights that the stable building block may be applied in potential nano-assembly., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

23. Strong Decays of observed $\Lambda_c$ Baryons in the $^3P_0$ Model

Abstract

The strong decay widths and some important branching ratios of possible Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka(OZI)-allowed strong decay channels of $\Lambda_c(2595)^+$, $\Lambda_c(2625)^+$, $\Lambda_c(2765)^+$ ($\Sigma_c(2765)^+$), $\Lambda_c(2860)^+$, $\Lambda_c(2880)^+$ and $\Lambda_c(2940)^+$ are computed in a $^{3}P_{0}$ model, and possible assignments of these $\Lambda_c$ are given. (1), $\Lambda_c(2595)^+$ and $\Lambda_c(2625)^+$ are possibly the $1P$-wave charmed baryons $\Lambda_{c1}(\frac{1}{2}^-)$ and $\Lambda_{c1}(\frac{3}{2}^-)$, respectively. (2), $\Lambda_c(2765)^+$ ($\Sigma_c(2765)^+$) seems impossibly the $1P$-wave $\Lambda_{c}$, it could be the $2S$-wave or $1D$-wave charmed baryon. So far, the experimental information has not been sufficient for its identification. (3), $\Lambda_c(2860)^+$ seems impossibly $2S$-wave charmed baryon, it may be the $P$-wave $\tilde\Lambda_{c2}^{ }(\frac{3}{2}^-)$ or $\tilde\Lambda_{c2}^{ }(\frac{5}{2}^-)$, it could also be the $D$-wave $\check\Lambda_{c1}^{2}(\frac{1}{2}^+)$ or $\check\Lambda_{c1}^{2}(\frac{3}{2}^+)$. If the hypothesis that $\Lambda_c(2860)^+$ has $J^P={3\over 2}^+$ is true, $\Lambda_c(2860)^+$ is possibly the $D$-wave $\check\Lambda_{c1}^{2}(\frac{3}{2}^+)$ which has a predicted branching ratio $R=\Gamma(\Sigma_c(2520)\pi)/\Gamma(\Sigma_c(2455)\pi)=2.8$. (4), $\Lambda_c(2880)^+$ is impossibly a $1P$-wave or $2S$-wave charmed baryon, it may be a $D$-wave $\check\Lambda_{c3}^{2}(\frac{5}{2}^+)$ with $\Gamma_{total}=1.3$ MeV. The predicted branching ratio $R=\Gamma(\Sigma_c(2520)\pi)/\Gamma(\Sigma_c(2455)\pi)=0.35$, which is consistent with experiment. 24. Identification of the newly observed $\Sigma_b(6097)^\pm$ baryons from their strong decays

Abstract

Two bottom $\Sigma_b(6097)^\pm$ baryons were observed in the final states $\Lambda_b^0\pi^-$ and $\Lambda_b^0\pi^+$ in $pp$ collision by LHCb collaboration, whose masses and widths were measured. In a $^{3}P_{0}$ model, the strong decay widths of two ground $S$-wave and seven excited $P$-wave $\Sigma_b$ baryons have been systematically computed. Numerical results indicate that the newly observed $\Sigma_b(6097)^\pm$ are very possibly $\Sigma_{b2}^1({3\over 2}^-)$ with $J^P={3\over 2}^-$ or $\Sigma_{b2}^1({5\over 2}^-)$ with $J^P={5\over 2}^-$. The predicted decay widths of $\Sigma_b(6097)^\pm$ are consistent with experimental measurement from LHCb. In particular, it may be possible to distinguish these two assignments through ratios $\Gamma({\Sigma_b(6097)^\pm\to \Sigma_b^\pm\pi^0})/\Gamma({\Sigma_b(6097)^\pm\to \Sigma_b^{*\pm}\pi^0})$, which can be measured by experiments in the future. In the meantime, our results support the assignments that $\Sigma_b^\pm$ and $\Sigma_b^{*\pm}$ are the ground $S$-wave $\Sigma_b$ baryons with $J^P={1\over 2}^+$ and $J^P={3\over 2}^+$, respectively., Comment: 5 pages, 6 tables, RevTex

Abstract

Chenpi, or dried tangerine peel, is a traditional Chinese ingredient valued in medicine and edible for its digestive and respiratory benefits. The geographical origin of Chenpi is important, as it can impact its quality, active compounds and market value. This study develops a strategy to distinguish Chenpi samples on its origin. Thirty-nine samples from eight regions in Xinhui district (Guangdong, China) are analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and mid-infrared (MIR) technique. Four machine learning methods are employed to establish discrimination models based on GC and MIR data, with two mid-level data fusion strategies to combine the data. The results show that data fusion significantly improves Chenpi origin discrimination. The K-nearest neighbors and artificial neural network models, using modified mid-level data fusion, provide the best performance, misclassified only one sample. Machine learning in combination with modified mid-level data fusion strategy provides effective classification of Chenpi samples from different geographical origins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using first-principles calculations, this study unveils a spherically aromatic core–shell B12@B80 structure featuring a B12 icosahedral core, which is the smallest complete coating icosahedral B12 core–shell Bn cluster to date. Abstract

ABSTRACT Transpirational cooling is crucial for plant thermal regulation to avoid overheating; however, during prolonged and/or acute heat stress it often necessitates stomatal closure to reduce the risk of hydraulic failure due to dehydration. The intricate interplay between thermal regulation, water transport and use may govern plant performance in water‐limited and simultaneously heat‐stressed environments, yet this remains inadequately understood. Here, in a common garden, we evaluated the functional associations among physiological characteristics related to leaf thermoregulation, heat tolerance, xylem water transport, and stomatal regulation in eight shrub species commonly used for fixing active sand dunes in northern China. Our study showed that traits associated with heat adaptation and xylem hydraulics were closely related to stomatal regulation. More isohydric shrub species with higher water transport efficiency possessed stronger transpirational cooling capacity; whereas the more anisohydric species demonstrated greater tolerance to overheating. Moreover, leaf heat tolerance was strongly coordinated with drought tolerance reflected by leaf turgor loss point. These results underscore the importance of stomatal regulation in shaping plant thermal adaptive strategies and provide valuable insights into the coupling of water and heat‐related physiological processes in plants adapted to sandy land environments prone to combined drought and heat stresses. Abstract

Crown removal revitalises sand-fixing shrubs that show declining vigour with age in drought-prone environments; however, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we addressed this knowledge gap by comparing the growth performance, xylem hydraulics and plant carbon economy across different plant ages (10, 21 and 33 years) and treatments (control and crown removal) using a representative sand-fixing shrub (Caragana microphylla Lam.) in northern China. We found that growth decline with plant age was accompanied by simultaneous decreases in soil moisture, plant hydraulic efficiency and photosynthetic capacity, suggesting that these interconnected changes in plant water relations and carbon economy were responsible for this decline. Following crown removal, quick resprouting, involving remobilisation of root nonstructural carbohydrate reserves, contributed to the reconstruction of an efficient hydraulic system and improved plant carbon status, but this became less effective in older shrubs. These age-dependent effects of carbon economy and hydraulics on plant growth vigour provide a mechanistic explanation for the age-related decline and revitalisation of sand-fixing shrubs. This understanding is crucial for the development of suitable management strategies for shrub plantations constructed with species having the resprouting ability and contributes to the sustainability of ecological restoration projects in water-limited sandy lands.
