Background: Endometriosis is a common, benign gynecological disorder affecting life quality of reproductive-aged women. Several polymorphisms in the promoter regions of the MMPs genes have been reported that were related to endometriosis risk. However, there are many contradictory conclusions, and no meta-analysis focused on this association systematically., Objectives: To evaluate the associations between various possible polymorphisms of MMPs genes and endometriosis risk, and confirm which kinds of MMPs genetic polymorphisms are associated with endometriosis risk, in order to identify the etiology and pathogenesis of endometriosis and the potential effective markers for predicting the predisposition to endometriosis., Search Strategy: An exhaustive electronic literature search was conducted, using keywords MMP, endometriosis and SNP, in English and Chinese., Selection Criteria: All eligible case-control studies by written in English or Chinese of the associations of MMPs polymorphisms with endometriosis risk, which had sufficient data for examining an odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI), were identified up to March 1, 2015., Data Collection and Analysis: A total of 1833 patients and 2190 controls from 12 studies were included. Allele frequency differences between cases and controls were performed with the use of odds ratios (ORs) and their respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for five genetic models., Main Results: For MMP-1 -1607 1G>2G (rs1799750) polymorphism, significant associations were observed both in overall comparison and subgroup analyses based on the stage of endometriosis, ethnicity of each study population and method of genotyping under four genetic models. In contrast, for MMP-2 15918 T>C (rs243847), MMP-2 -753 C>T (rs2285053), MMP-7 -181 A>G (rs11568818), MMP-9 -1562 C>T (rs3918242) and MMP-9 R279Q (rs17576) polymorphisms, no association was found in overall comparison, but in subgroup analyses based on source of control, stage of endometriosis, or ethnicity., Conclusions: MMP-1 -1607 1G>2G polymorphism might modulate risk of endometriosis, so does the MMP-2 15918 T>C, MMP-2 -753 C>T, MMP-7 -181 A>G, MMP-9 -1562 C>T and MMP-9 R279Q polymorphisms in some subgroups., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Leviteracetam (LEV) is a novel antiepileptic drug with improved tolerance and safety, while carbamazepine (CBZ) represents classical antiepileptic drugs. So far, a systemic comparison of the efficacy and side effects of these two drugs is lacking. A literature review on the comparison of leviteracetam versus carbamazepine for patients with epilepsy was performed up to September 2013 using PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library and ISI web of science. Finally, 3 randomized controlled trials (RCT) studies met the criteria on comparing the efficacy of leviteracetam versus carbamazepine for patients with epilepsy were included for meta-analysis. Stata 11.0 was used to analyze and summarize the respective data. Three RCTs met the entry criteria. The relative risk (RR) and 95% and the confidence interval (CI) of leviteracetam versus carbamazepine for 6- and 12-month seizure free intervals were 1.0 (0.91-1.10) and 0.97 (0.84-1.13), respectively, for therapy discontinuation due to adverse events (AEs) were 0.62 (0.48-0.80) and 1.00 (0.94-2.05), respectively, and for withdrawal after 6- and 12-month treatment were 0.8 (0.64-0.99) and 0.87 (0.74-1.03), respectively. The RR and 95% CI for occurrence of headache, fatigue, diarrhea, vertigo, nasopharyngitis, depression, weight gain and rash were 0.88 (0.73-1.06), 1.08(0.63-1.83), 1.23 (0.66-2.28), 0.92 (0.49-1.71), 0.85 (0.59-1.22), 2.15 (1.26-3.68), 0.69 (0.45-1.04), 0.39 (0.23-0.68), respectively. The major outcomes such as rate of seizure freedom were similar between leviteracetam and carbamazepine. However, leviteracetam led to depression more frequently than carbamazepine, while carbamazepine caused rash more frequently. However, the limited numbers of available RCTs studies and included patients in this study made our results less convincing and accurate.

Inorganic oxide aerogels have unique thermal, optical, electrical, magnetic, and chemical properties, which result in them potentially having a broad range of applications. However, their preparation is commonly based on a supercritical drying method, which greatly limits real applications of aerogels and their commercialization. Here we demonstrate a general method for drying wet gels to form aerogels that is based on the sublimation of organic solvent. The organic solvent must have a low surface tension, undergo sublimation easily, and have a high freezing point to allow the rapid synthesis of monolithic inorganic oxide aerogels under vacuum conditions. This cost-effective process will facilitate application of aerogel materials. This approach may also be used for the preparation of other porous materials, whose theoretical and practical applications should be investigated., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Objective: To analyze the relationship between the ictal onset zone and dominant interictal epileptiform foci in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) patients., Method: Clinical data of 20 patients with TSC which had epileptic seizures during Video-EEG monitoring was assessed. Consistency and dominance of focal interictal epileptiform activity and the ictal onset zone were identified. Concordance between interictal and ictal findings was analyzed., Result: Of the 20 patients, 7 were female, and 13 were male. The age of epilepsy onset was from 15 d to 6 years. The Video-EEG monitoring age was from 6 months to 11 years. Family history was found in three cases. Abnormality in neuroimaging existed in 17 of 18 patients who were examined. Interictal EEG showed hypsarrhythmia in 3 patients, multifocal epileptiform activity with a dominant focus in 12 patients, both focal and generalized discharges in 2 patients, and only focal discharges in 3 patients. The seizures types during EEG monitoring included epileptic spasms, partial seizure, atypical absence, and generalized or focal myoclonic seizure. The most common seizure type was partial seizure and then epileptic spasms. EEG in 4 patients with epileptic spasms showed ictal generalized discharges and interictal hypsarrhythmia or generalized discharges. Clinical manifestation of epileptic spasms was asymmetric in 3 patients. Lateralization and location of interictal and ictal discharges were consistent in 2 of the 3 patients, while only lateralization consistency in 1 of the 3 patients. Partial seizures as the only seizure type were monitored in 13 patients. Of the 13 patients, lateralization and location of interictal and ictal discharges were inconsistent in 2 patients (15%), consistent in 8 patients (62%), lateralization or location consistent in 2 patients (15%). One case could not be analyzed because of uncertainty of lateralization and location of seizure onset., Conclusion: In the majority of patients with TSC, multifocal interictal epileptiform activity is present, in which a most dominance of focal epileptiform activity could be found. For some epileptic seizures or the majority of partial seizures, the ictal onset zone is concordant with the dominance of focal interictal epileptiform foci. The concordance might have positioning reference significance for preoperative evaluation of epilepsy surgery.
