4. Rapid Quantitative Authentication of Blended Vegetable Oil Quality by Raman Spectroscopy Coupled with a Selection Algorithm of Spectral Characteristic Intervals

Abstract

In this study, a method for the rapid quantitative determination of the content of high-value vegetable oil in blended edible vegetable oils (BEVO) was proposed based on Raman spectroscopy and a selection algorithm of spectral characteristic intervals. First, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithms were combined to develop a hybrid intelligent optimization algorithm called PSOGWO. Second, the PSOGWO algorithm and the combined moving window (CMW) strategy were combined to develop a novel spectral characteristic interval selection algorithm named PSOGWO-CMW. Third, blends of corn oil (CO) and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) at different ratios were prepared, and then their Raman spectra were acquired. Using the Raman spectra as input variables, partial least squares regression (PLSR), PSO-CMW, GWO-CMW, and PSOGWO-CMW models were developed to predict the content of EVOO, and their performance was comparatively studied. The results showed that the PSOGWO-CMW model had the best prediction performance. The results of the proposed method for the content of EVOO in CO-EVOO blends were not significantly different from those of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In conclusion, this method is rapid and accurate, and can be used for rapid and quantitative determination of the content of high-value vegetable oil in BEVO.

5. Localised bulging of an inflated rubber tube with fixed ends

Abstract

When a rubber tube with free ends is inflated under volume control, the pressure will first reach a maximum and then decrease monotonically to approach a constant asymptote. The pressure maximum corresponds to the initiation of a localised bulge and is predicted by a bifurcation condition, whereas the asymptote is the Maxwell pressure corresponding to a "two-phase" propagation state. In contrast, when the tube is first pre-stretched and then has its ends fixed during subsequent inflation, the pressure versus bulge amplitude has both a maximum and a minimum, and the behaviour on the right ascending branch has previously not been fully understood. We show that for all values of pre-stretch and tube length, the ascending branches all converge to a single curve that is only dependent on the ratio of tube thickness to the outer radius. This curve represents the Maxwell state to be approached in each case (if Euler buckling or axisymmetric wrinkling does not occur first), but this state is pressure-dependent in contrast with the free-ends case. We also demonstrate experimentally that localized bulging cannot occur when the pre-stretch is sufficiently large and investigate what strain-energy functions can predict this observed phenomenon., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

As a novel and rapid detection technique, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has many advantages such as simple sample pretreatment, rich spectral information, high sensitivity, rapidity, easy operation, and immunity to interference from water molecules. Hence, SERS has been considered a powerful tool and a research hotspot for food safety rapid detection. This article reviews the development, enhancement mechanism, and detection modes of SERS, and summarizes the latest progress in the detection of common mycotoxins in foods by SERS. Moreover, its problems to be solved and future trends are discussed. It is hoped that this review can provide a reference for future research and development of SERS technology for rapid detection of mycotoxins.

Abstract

Scientists have been seeking ways to use Wolbachia to eliminate the mosquitoes that spread human diseases. Could Wolbachia be the determining factor in controlling the mosquito-borne infectious diseases? To answer this question mathematically, we develop a reaction-diffusion model with free boundary in a one-dimensional environment. We divide the female mosquito population into two groups: one is the uninfected mosquito population that grows in the whole region while the other is the mosquito population infected with Wolbachia that occupies a finite small region and invades the environment with a spreading front governed by a free boundary satisfying the well-known one-phase Stefan condition. For the resulting free boundary problem, we establish criteria under which spreading and vanishing occur. Our results provide useful insights on designing a feasible mosquito releasing strategy to invade the whole mosquito population with Wolbachia infection and thus eventually eradicate the mosquito-borne diseases., Comment: 31 pages

Abstract

In this article, we study the existence of periodic solutions to a class of distributed delay differential equations. We transform the search for periodic solutions with the special symmetry of a delay differential equation to the problem of finding periodic solutions of an associated Hamiltonian system. Using the critical point theory and the pseudo-index theory, we obtain some sufficient conditions for the multiplicity of periodic solutions. This is the first time that critical point theory has been used to study the existence of periodic solutions to distributed delay differential equations.
