Abstract Even though tuning electronic effect of chiral ligands has proven to be a promising method for designing efficient catalysts, the potential to achieve highly selective reactions by this strategy remains largely unexplored. Here, we report a palladium-catalyzed enantioselective ring-closing aminoalkylative amination of aminoenynes enabled by rationally tuning the remote electronic property of 1,1’-binaphthol-derived phosphoramidites. With a tailored 6,6’-CN-substituted 1,1’-binaphthol-derived phosphoramidite as a ligand, a broad range of aromatic amines are compatible with this reaction, allowing the efficient synthesis of a series of enantioenriched exocyclic allenylamines bearing saturated N-heterocycles with up to >99% enantiomeric excess. Remarkably, a one-pot aminoalkylative amination/hydroamination process for the rapid synthesis of chiral spirodiamines promoted by this catalytic system is also established. Detailed mechanistic studies provide solid evidence to support that the remote electronic character of these chiral ligands can efficiently tuning the enantioselectivity by altering the length of the allylic C-Pd bond of the key catalytic intermediate.

Study region: Shaanxi Province, including the Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi, the Guanzhong Plain, and the Qinba Mountains in southern Shaanxi. Study focus: Frequent extreme rainfall exacerbates the risk of rainfall-induced landslides, highlighting the importance of rainfall thresholds quantification for accurate hazard prevention. New hydrological insights for the region: The rainfall on the day and 7–28 cm soil moisture have a strong impact on landslide occurrences. The effective duration threshold for rainfall-induced landslides is largest in the Qinba Mountains area (high vegetation cover), and the 50 % threshold curve has a better early warning effect. Under high soil moisture and rainfall conditions, the probability for rainfall-induced landslides increases. In contrast, the probability threshold for landslides in areas with high vegetation coverage is also higher. This study quantified the probability thresholds for rainfall-induced landslides based on the coupled effective duration threshold and soil moisture. The results provide a theoretical reference for the precise prevention of landslides.

Study region: This study is based in the rapidly developing large-scale coal base located in Northwest China. Study focus: This study focuses on addressing a critical yet overlooked aspect of large-scale coal resource development in arid regions: the impact on coal seam roof groundwater. Recognizing the paramount importance of safeguarding groundwater resources for sustainable mining practices, the research introduces a novel concept of “skylight-type secondary water inrush pattern” and develops a comprehensive evaluation methodology to quantify its extent. New hydrological insights for the region: The study presents groundbreaking hydrological insights into the behavior of groundwater systems impacted by coal mining in arid regions. It reveals that secondary water inrush pattern, a phenomenon driven by hydrodynamics, extends beyond the immediate mechanical footprint of mining, posing significant challenges for groundwater resource management. This research underscores the importance of considering not just the structural alterations to aquifers but also the broader hydrological consequences of mining activities. By integrating multivariate geological information with a variable weights theory, the developed evaluation method provides a nuanced understanding of how mining alters groundwater abundance and flow patterns. These new insights challenge traditional approaches and offer a scientific basis for designing effective strategies to mitigate water damage, manage mine groundwater, and promote sustainable mining practices in arid environments.

Abstract Given the complex form of distribution line faults, the accuracy of fault location using traditional artificial intelligence networks needs to be further improved. Here, a combined fault location method is proposed for a 110 kV distribution line based on the improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN), mantis search algorithm (MSA), and convolutional gate recurrent unit (ConvGRU). Firstly, the study used the ICEEMDAN algorithm to decompose the signals and discard the high‐frequency signals with low correlation so as to achieve the purpose of noise cancellation. Then, the study used the root mean square error (RMSE) of the ConvGRU model training as the adaptation value, optimized the internal parameters of the model using the MSA algorithm, and obtained a combined fault locating model. By using the proposed model, the effects of the fault form and transition impedance changes on the location accuracy were analysed, and the location accuracy was compared with other artificial intelligence methods. The location accuracy index showed that the proposed model had a better convergence speed of training error than the traditional model. Also, the RMSE of the localization results was reduced by 50%, with a higher fault location accuracy.

Abstract Serine/threonine kinase receptor-associated protein (STRAP) serves as a scaffold protein and is engaged in a variety of cellular activities, although its importance in antiviral innate immunity is unknown. We discovered that STRAP works as an interferon (IFN)-inducible positive regulator, facilitating type I IFN signaling during pseudorabies virus infection. Mechanistically, STRAP interacts with TBK1 to activate type I IFN signaling. Both the CT and WD40 7 − 6 domains contribute to the function of STRAP. Furthermore, TBK1 competes with PRV-UL50 for binding to STRAP, and STRAP impedes the degradation of TBK1 mediated by PRV-UL50, thereby increasing the interaction between STRAP and TBK1. Overall, these findings reveal a previously unrecognized role for STRAP in innate antiviral immune responses during PRV infection. STRAP could be a potential therapeutic target for viral infectious diseases.

Osteoporosis is prevalent among the elderly and requires precise diagnostic approaches for effective treatment and prevention. This work introduces a machine learning-based method for the accurate grading of osteoporosis via the analysis of high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images of the spine. This approach allows for the precise extraction of the trabecular component of vertebral bodies, thereby enabling accurate measurement of bone density. Evaluated in 183 individuals, our method demonstrated enhanced stability in bone density prediction and reduced bias when juxtaposed with traditional random sampling techniques. Despite the inherent risk of overestimation, the machine learning model more accurately approximates the actual bone quality compared to conventional clinical methods, which typically involve the random extraction of 3–4 trabecular bone slices from the spine. These findings offer a novel approach to the clinical assessment of osteoporosis, underscoring the significant potential of integrating machine learning into existing medical image analysis workflows.

A microgravity environment has been shown to cause ocular damage and affect visual acuity, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, we established an animal model of weightlessness via tail suspension to examine the pathological changes and molecular mechanisms of retinal damage under microgravity. After 4 weeks of tail suspension, there were no notable alterations in retinal function and morphology, while after 8 weeks of tail suspension, significant reductions in retinal function were observed, and the outer nuclear layer was thinner, with abundant apoptotic cells. To investigate the mechanism underlying the degenerative changes that occurred in the outer nuclear layer of the retina, proteomics was used to analyze differentially expressed proteins in rat retinas after 8 weeks of tail suspension. The results showed that the expression levels of fibroblast growth factor 2 (also known as basic fibroblast growth factor) and glial fibrillary acidic protein, which are closely related to Müller cell activation, were significantly upregulated. In addition, Müller cell regeneration and Müller cell gliosis were observed after 4 and 8 weeks, respectively, of simulated weightlessness. These findings indicate that Müller cells play an important regulatory role in retinal outer nuclear layer degeneration during weightlessness.

The integration of renewable energy sources and distributed energy storage systems increasingly complicates the operation of distribution networks, while stringent carbon reduction targets demand low-carbon operational strategies. To address these complexities, this paper introduces a two-stage model for reconfiguring distribution networks and ensuring low-carbon dispatch. Initially, second-order cone programming is employed to minimize losses in the network. Subsequently, the outputs of renewable energy and energy storage systems are optimized using the mantis search algorithm (MSA) to achieve low-carbon dispatch, with the network’s carbon potential as the evaluation metric. The proposed model demonstrates a significant reduction in average active power loss by 34.85%, a decrease in daily carbon emissions by 509.97 kg, and a reduction in carbon emission costs by 17.24%, thereby markedly enhancing the economic and social benefits of grid operations.

With the increasing of renewable energy penetration rate in power source structure, the impact of its uncertainty on the stability of the power system is becoming increasingly apparent. The power system faces dual pressures of ensuring power supply and renewable energy accommodation. The way in which to accurately plan the power structure under situations with a high renewable energy penetration rate has become an urgent issue for future power infrastructure upgrading. In this paper, a rational power structure model was proposed for a provincial power grid by iteratively optimizing variables. The synergistic relationship between renewable energy, traditional power sources, and the energy storage system was considered comprehensively and calculated through the time-series production simulation method. The as-proposed model was studied using a scenario of a provincial grid plan in the year 2035. The power balance, electricity consumption, and renewable energy utilization were systematically analyzed, providing an important theoretical basis for the optimization and upgrading of provincial power systems under the rapid growth of renewable energy.

The central and western coal resources have the highest degree of enrichment and superior development conditions in China. With the improvement of mining efficiency, the disturbance of high-intensity and large-mining-height mining mode to groundwater system also increases. In particular, the groundwater in the aquifer outside the disturbance range of the water-conducting fracture zone gradually participates in the mine water inflow process during the coal mining. Such mode leads to a series of problems such as large deviation of mine water inflow prediction, inaccurate evaluation of water inflow risk and unclear water hazard prevention measures, which brings great hidden risks to the current mine water hazard prevention and control. In this paper, a derivative mode of dynamic water inrush is summarized. With the coal mining, the evolution of groundwater system caused by overburden failure will induce new disaster sources, resulting in different forms of water inrush. Its connotation is to change the basis of defining the derivative dynamic water inrush model from the traditional static analysis before mining to the dynamic evaluation considering the change in the whole mining cycle. The derived dynamic water inrush model of the mine can be preliminarily divided into three categories, namely, “skylight leakage type”, “bed separation disaster type” and “channel permeability increase type”. This paper mainly discusses the derivative dynamic water inrush mode of “skylight leakage type”. Taking the Shanxi Yushen mining area, a shallow buried coal seam mining area with high strength and large mining height, as an example, the disaster-pregnant conditions of “skylight supply type” derivative disasters are discussed in depth. Through supplementary analysis of water-richness and hydraulic connection strength of indirect water-filled aquifer, the comprehensive evaluation of water inrush risk in roof aquifer is achieved, and the evaluation method system of disaster derivative model is put forward. Through the transformation of mining mode, the active prevention and control system is constructed. A passive prevention and control system is constructed by multi-objective advance drainage before mining and local grouting after mining. By further refining the mine water inrush disaster model, optimizing the evaluation system and establishing comprehensive prevention and control technology, it provides a scientific basis for the protection of groundwater resources and safe low-carbon mining in ecologically fragile areas.

Ageratina adenophora can enhance its invasive ability by using beneficial rhizosphere bacteria. Bacillus cereus is able to promote plant growth and provide a positive feedback effect to A. adenophora. However, the interaction between A. adenophora and B. cereus under the influence of native polyphagous insect feeding is still unclear. In this study, Eupatorium lindleyanum, a local species closely related to A. adenophora, was used as a control, aimed to compare the content of B. cereus in the roots of A. adenophora and rhizosphere soil after different densities of Aphis gossypii feeding, and then investigated the variations in the population of A. gossypii and soil characteristics after the addition of B. cereus. The result showed that B. cereus content in the rhizosphere soil and root of A. adenophora increased significantly under A. gossypii feeding compared with local plants, which also led to the change of α-diversity and β-diversity of the bacterial community, as well as the increase in nitrate nitrogen (NO3–N) content. The addition of B.cereus in the soil could also inhibit the population growth of A. gossypii on A. adenophora and increase the content of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) in the soil. Our research demonstrated that B. cereus enhances the ability of A. adenophora to resist natural enemy by increasing soil ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) and accumulating other beneficial bacteria, which means that rhizosphere microorganisms help invasive plants defend themselves against local natural enemies by regulating the soil environment.

Study Region: Upper Amu Darya (UAD). Study Focus: The UAD has abundant hydropower potential (HP). This study focuses on the potential sites of small hydropower stations (sHPs) and explores the impact of future climate change on discharge and HP. New Hydrological Insights for the Region: The conflict between water resources and hydropower in Central Asia is a key issue affecting regional development. Developing sHPs provides a new direction for alleviating energy shortages in Central Asia. Combining the hydrological model with the geographic information decision-making method, we have determined the potential sites for ten sHPs in the UAD and calculated the HP for each station. Based on future climate data from two shared socioeconomic pathways and four global climate models, we found that future precipitation and temperature are projected to increase, with precipitation increasing mainly in spring and winter. The average discharge will increase by 19.1∼36.6% in the near-term (2031–2050) and by 29.7∼106.8% in the long-term (2071–2090). In addition, climate change has significantly increased HP in winter, and the increase of HP in relatively high altitudes is higher than that in low altitudes. This implies that the HP development prospect of UAD is broad in future, but for sHPs construction schemes, it is necessary to further consider the impact on both environment and society.

The identification of submarine cable locations is crucial for their operation and maintenance. Precise location data enables the monitoring of route changes and facilitates rapid fault detection. Magnetic sensing is commonly used for detecting buried submarine cables. However, current research seldom discusses the impact of mutual magnetic field interference among submarine power cables on location accuracy and considers only the magnetic field intensity for cable detection. In this study, the authors first establish a general magnetic field model for three parallel single-core submarine power cables carrying three-phase currents and thoroughly investigate the variations in the amplitude and phase difference of the magnetic field surrounding the cables. Based on this model, the authors introduce a gradient measurement method based on the phase difference for the first time and compare its location accuracy with that of the traditional extremum method. Our findings reveal that the phase difference method offers higher location accuracy at longer detection distances, whereas the extremum method is preferable for shorter distances because of its simpler device and criteria.

With the rapid development of modern industry, while improving people’s living standards, the over-exploitation of coal, oil and natural gas has led to a shortage of fossil energy, global warming and an increasingly serious deterioration of the ecological environment. To mitigate the greenhouse effect caused by excessive carbon emissions, the vigorous development of integrated electricity-gas system (IEGS) dominated by clean energy is the future trend of sustainable development of energy systems. In this paper, a bi-level optimal scheduling model is proposed for an IEGS considering carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), and the ladder carbon trading mechanism is introduced to convert carbon emissions into economic benefits. The upper model is an optimal distribution model of natural gas network, and the lower model is a day-ahead economic dispatch model of power system. Based on the Karush-Kuhn-Tucher (KKT) condition and strong duality theory of the lower model, the bi-level model is transformed into a mixed integer linear programming (MILP), which is solved by calling CPLEX through the Yalmip toolbox of the Matlab platform. Finally, the reasonableness and validity of the model are verified by three arithmetic simulations. The results show that the proposed bi-level model for low-carbon economic dispatch of IEGS considering CCUS can effectively reduce the operating costs and carbon emissions of the system.

Fucosylated chondroitin sulfate is a unique glycosaminoglycan isolated from sea cucumbers, with excellent anticoagulant activity. The fucosyl branch in FCS is generally located at the 3-OH of D-glucuronic acid but, recently, a novel structure with α-L-fucose linked to the 6-OH of N-acetyl-galactosamine has been found. Here, using functionalized monosaccharide building blocks, we prepared novel FCS tetrasaccharides with fucosyl branches both at the 6-OH of GalNAc and 3-OH of GlcA. In the synthesis, the protective group strategy of selective O-sulfation, as well as stereoselective glycosylation, was established, which enabled the efficient synthesis of the specific tetrasaccharide compounds. This research enriches knowledge on the structural types of FCS oligosaccharides and facilitates the exploration of the structure–activity relationship in the future.

The rice stripe virus (RSV) is transmitted by the small brown planthopper Laodelphax striatellus in a persistent and circulative–propagative manner. During the last few decades, RSV has caused serious disease outbreaks in rice fields in China. The results of long-term coevolution have led to complex and diverse relationships between viruses and vector insects, and understanding these interactions is critical for the management of diseases and vector organisms. In this study, three groups of comparative experiments were performed to investigate the effects of RSV infection on the reproductive parameters, vitellogenin (Vg), and Vg receptor (VgR) expressions of L. striatellus. The results showed that RSV infection promoted the fecundity, hatchability, and Vg and VgR expressions of L. striatellus but had no effect on the preoviposition period and oviposition period. Furthermore, the RNA interference of the nucleocapsid protein (CP) gene and the injection of the CP antibody in RSV-viruliferous L. striatellus reduced the fecundity, hatchability, and Vg and VgR expressions, further strengthening the hypothesis that RSV may manipulate the reproductive behavior of insect vectors to promote its own transmission. The results of this study can further reveal the interaction mechanism of virus–vector insects in reproduction and virus transmission, and provide new insights for the control of insect-borne viruses.

Gas targets hold distinctive significance and advantages in the field of laser-matter interaction. As a major type of gas targets, supersonic gas target is one of the most commonly used targets for laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA). The temporal-spatial resolution study of it could provide valuable data references for the LWFA experiment. In this work, a Nomarski interference system with high spatial-temporal resolution was set up to diagnose the jet process of supersonic gas jet target. The formation process of supersonic gas jet under different jet durations, different injection positions and different gas back pressures was studied. It is beneficial to determine the more optimized time and position of laser injection into target when conducting LWFA experiments. Therefore, the quality of the obtained electron beam and radiation source can be effectively improved.

As a new concept for systematically evaluating ecosystem services, Gross Ecosystem Product (GEP) provides an effective means to comprehensively reveal the overall status of the ecosystem, the impact of economic activities on the ecological environment, and the effectiveness of ecological protection efforts. GEP accounting has been conducted in various regions; however, GEP’s application in natural reserves still requires further exploration. Taking the Qinling Mountains as the research area, this paper aims to assess the relationship between GEP and economic development on the basis of the GEP accounting system. The results indicated that: (1) From 2010 to 2020, GEP tended to increase continuously and exhibited a distribution pattern with high value regions in the east and west, and low value regions in the north and south. (2) Over the years, the coupling coordination degree between GEP and GDP was in a consistent upward trend. In 2020, a good coupling coordination state between GEP and GDP was achieved in most districts and counties. (3) With the relative development between GEP and GDP, the social economy of most districts and counties lagged behind GEP in 2010. The number of districts and counties lagging in GEP in 2020 increased, while the number of regions with a balanced development of GEP and GDP was still relatively discouraging. (4) In general, elevation, contagion, temperature, population density, and precipitation were the main drivers of coupling coordination degree between GEP and GDP. If the relationship between economic development and ecological environmental protection can be reasonably balanced, it will further promote the sustainable development of nature reserves, and provide a scientific basis for sustainable policy-making in other similar areas.

To overcome the shortcoming wherein the accuracy of subsea cable detection can be affected by the determination of the bias vector, scale factors, and non-orthogonality corrections of the vector magnetometer, a real-time attitude-independent route tracking method for subsea power cables is investigated theoretically and experimentally by means of scalar magnetic field checking. The measurement of the magnetic field Bc produced by the current in a cable is made immune to the influence of the platform attitude by extracting the component of Bc along the geomagnetic field using a high-bandwidth self-oscillating optically pumped magnetometer. The self-oscillating frequency is proved to be independent of the attitude of the magnetometer with the theoretical model. Experiments are carried out to test the attitude-independent performance, and the effectiveness of route tracking is verified by the results of the sea experiment. The proposed method will effectively improve the ability to locate subsea cables under high sea conditions.

Abstract Background To determine the efficacy and safety of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) in Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods In this single-center, double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled phase II trial, 91 patients were randomly assigned to receive intravenous infusion of UC-MSCs (n = 45) or placebo (n = 46) three times with 4-week intervals and followed up for 48 weeks from October 2015 to December 2018. A novel scheme has been proposed to enhance neutron yields, in which a multi-channel target consisting of a row of parallel micro-wires and a plane substrate is irradiated by a relativistic femtosecond laser. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that the multi-channel target can significantly enhance the neutron yield, which is about 4 orders of magnitude greater than the plane target. Different from the case of nanowire target, we find that when the laser penetrates into the channel, the excited transverse sheath electric field can effectively accelerate the D+ ions in the transverse direction. When these energetic D+ ions move towards the nearby wire, they will collide with the bulk D+ ions to trigger D-D fusion reaction and produce neutrons, which is much more effective than the plane target case. Due to the unique trajectory of the incident D+ ions, the angular distribution of the produced neutrons is modulated from isotropic to two peaks around ±90°. Meanwhile, this enhancement and modulation is further verified in a wide range of target parameters.

Magnetic target localization using the magnetic gradient tensor (MGT) plays a significant role in underwater localization. However, this method inherently has a localization dead zone, which presents challenges for real-world applications. This paper delves into the root cause of this dead zone, identifying the non-invertibility of the MGT when the magnetic moment vector is orthogonal to the position vector from the target to the observation point. To tackle this issue, a method based on the eigenvector constraints is proposed. By constructing an objective function with eigenvector constraints and leveraging the property that its gradient at the observation point is zero, we derive an equivalent expression for the inverse of MGT that always holds and further develop a dead-zone-free localization method. To validate the robustness and efficacy of the proposed localization method, a comparative analysis with other methods is conducted. Simulation results in a 10 m × 10 m area under Gaussian noise demonstrate the proposed method’s capability to eliminate the dead zone and achieve an average localization error of 0.032 m. Experimental results further demonstrate that the proposed method eliminates the localization dead zone and exhibits greater robustness than the dominant method in the normal region. In summation, this paper provides an effective method for eliminating localization dead zone, offering a more stable and reliable method for magnetic target localization in practice.

Intramuscular fat (IMF) is correlated positively with meat tenderness, juiciness and taste that affected sensory meat quality. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been extensively researched to increase IMF content in animals, however, the regulatory mechanism remains unclear. Adipocyte fatty acid binding protein (A-FABP) gene has been proposed as candidates for IMF accretion. The purpose of this study is to explore the molecular regulatory pathways of CLA on intramuscular fat deposition. Here, our results by cell lines indicated that CLA treatment promoted the expression of A-FABP through activated the transcription factor of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα). Moreover, in an animal model, we discovered that dietary supplemental with CLA significantly enhanced IMF deposition by up-regulating the mRNA and protein expression of PPARα and A-FABP in the muscle tissues of mice. In addition, our current study also demonstrated that dietary CLA increased mRNA expression of genes and enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis and lipid metabolism the muscle tissues of mice. These findings suggest that CLA mainly increases the expression of A-FABP through PPARα signaling pathway and regulates the expression of genes and enzymes related to IMF deposition, thus increasing IMF content. These results contribute to better understanding the molecular mechanism of IMF accretion in animals for the improvement of meat quality.

Interferon-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15) is strongly upregulated during viral infections and exerts pro-viral or antiviral actions. While many viruses combat host antiviral defenses by limiting ISG expression, PRV infection notably increases expression of ISG15. However, studies on the viral strategies to regulate ISG15-mediated antiviral responses are limited. Here, we demonstrate that PRV-induced free ISG15 and conjugated proteins accumulation require viral gene expression. Conjugation inhibition assays showed that ISG15 imposes its antiviral effects via unconjugated (free) ISG15 and restricts the viral release. Knockout of ISG15 in PK15 cells interferes with IFN-β production by blocking IRF3 activation and promotes PRV replication. Mechanistically, ISG15 facilitates IFNα-mediated antiviral activity against PRV by accelerating the activation and nuclear translocation of STAT1 and STAT2. Furthermore, ISG15 facilitated STAT1/STAT2/IRF9 (ISGF3) formation and ISGF3-induced IFN-stimulated response elements (ISRE) activity for efficient gene transcription by directly interacting with STAT2. Significantly, ISG15 knockout mice displayed enhanced susceptibility to PRV, as evidenced by increased mortality and viral loads, as well as more severe pathology caused by excessive production of the inflammatory cytokines. Our studies establish the importance of free ISG15 in IFNα-induced antiviral immunity and in the control of viral infections.

Identifying unbalanced phase currents is crucial for control and fault alarm rates in power grids, especially in urban distribution networks. The zero-sequence current transformer, specifically designed for measuring unbalanced phase currents, offers advantages in measurement range, identity, and size, compared to using three separate current transformers. However, it cannot provide detailed information on the unbalance status beyond the total zero-sequence current. We present a novel method for identifying unbalanced phase currents based on phase difference detection using magnetic sensors. Our approach relies on analyzing phase difference data from two orthogonal magnetic field components generated by three-phase currents, as opposed to the amplitude data used in previous methods. This enables the differentiation of unbalance types (amplitude unbalance and phase unbalance) through specific criteria and allows for the simultaneous selection of an unbalanced phase current in the three-phase currents. In this method, the amplitude measurement range of magnetic sensors is no longer a critical factor, allowing for an easily attainable wide identification range for current line loads. This approach offers a new avenue for unbalanced phase current identification in power systems.

Abstract Mechanism exploitation of energy homeostasis is urgently required because of the worldwide prevailing of obesity-related metabolic disorders in human being. Although it is well known that leptin plays a central role in regulating energy balance by suppressing food intake and promoting energy expenditure, the existence of leptin resistance in majority of obese individuals hampers the utilization of leptin therapy against these disorders. However, the mechanism of leptin resistance is largely unknown in spite of the globally enormous endeavors. Current theories to interpret leptin resistance include the impairment of leptin transport, attenuation of leptin signaling, chronic inflammation, ER tress, deficiency of autophagy, as well as leptin itself. Leptin-activated leptin receptor (LepRb) signals in hypothalamus via several pathways, in which JAK2-STAT3 pathway, the most extensively investigated one, is considered to mediate the major action of leptin in energy regulation. Upon leptin stimulation the phosphorylation of STAT3 is one of the key events in JAK2-STAT3 pathway, followed by the dimerization and nuclear translocation of this molecule. Phosphorylated STAT3 (p-STAT3), as a transcription factor, binds to and regulates its target gene such as POMC gene, playing the physiological function of leptin. Regarding POMC gene in hypothalamus however little is known about the detail of its interaction with STAT3. Moreover the status of p-STAT3 and its significance in hypothalamus of DIO mice needs to be well elucidated. This review comprehends literatures on leptin and leptin resistance and especially discusses what STAT3 phosphorylation would contribute to central leptin resistance.

BackgroundThe nursing goal of patients with cancer is to provide them with holistic care, including physical, psychological, and social adaptation, and spirituality. This research aimed to explore the influence of the social workers' empathy ability on suicidal ideation of patients with cancer and its path.MethodsThere was a sum of 358 patients with cancer and the 45 social workers serving them participated in the survey. Data of their self-efficacy, depression symptom, stigma, and suicidal ideation were measured before the social work provided (T1) and 3 months after the social work finished (T2) were collected and compared. Pearson correlation analysis was used to assess the relationships between social workers' empathy ability and patient indicators at T2. The influence path of social workers' empathy ability on cancer patients' suicidal ideation was explored by path analysis at T2.ResultsAt T2, patients reported higher self-efficacy and lower depression symptoms, stigma, and suicidal ideation than at T1. At T2, social workers' empathy ability was positively related to patients' self-efficacy and was negatively related to depression symptoms, stigma, and suicidal ideation. Social workers' empathy ability affected patients' suicidal ideation directly. In addition, patients' self-efficacy, depression symptoms, and stigma played mediating roles in the influence of social workers' empathy abilities on their suicidal ideation.ConclusionSocial workers' empathy ability not only directly affected cancer patients' suicide ideation but also affected suicide ideation through the mediating roles of self-efficacy, depression symptoms, and stigma. Therefore, the improvement of the empathy ability of medical social workers needs to be paid attention to.

Radiomics involves high-throughput extraction and analysis of quantitative information from medical images. Since it was proposed in 2012, there are some publications on the application of radiomics for (1) predicting recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP), clinical severity of acute pancreatitis (AP), and extrapancreatic necrosis in AP; (2) differentiating mass-forming chronic pancreatitis (MFCP) from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), focal autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) from PDAC, and functional abdominal pain (functional gastrointestinal diseases) from RAP and chronic pancreatitis (CP); and (3) identifying CP and normal pancreas, and CP risk factors and complications. In this review, we aim to systematically summarize the applications and progress of radiomics in pancreatitis and it associated situations, so as to provide reference for related research.

Abstract Background The background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging use to predict breast cancer attracts many searchers to draw a possible relationship. However, the results of their relationships were conflicting. This meta-analysis was performed to assess breast cancer frequency associations with background parenchymal enhancement. Methods A systematic literature search up to January 2020 was performed to detect studies recording associations between breast cancer frequency and background parenchymal enhancement. We found thirteen studies including 13,788 women at the start with 4046 breast cancer. We calculated the odds ratio (OR) and the 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between breast cancer frequency and background parenchymal enhancement by the dichotomous technique with a random or fixed-effect model. Results Women with minimal or mild background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging did not have any risk of breast cancer compared to control women (OR, 1.20; 95% CI 0.54–2.67). However, high background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging (OR, 2.66; 95% CI 1.36–5.19) and moderate (OR, 2.51; 95% CI 1.49–4.21) was associated with a significantly higher rate of breast cancer frequency compared to control women. Conclusions Our meta-analysis showed that the women with high and moderate background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging have higher risks, up to 2.66 fold, of breast cancer. We suggest that women with high or moderate background parenchymal enhancement at breast magnetic resonance imaging to be scheduled for more frequent follow-up and screening for breast cancer to avoid any complications.

Retinal degeneration (RD) refers to a group of blinding retinopathies leading to the progressive photoreceptor demise and vision loss. Treatments against this debilitating disease are urgently needed. Intraocular delivery of exosomes represents an innovative therapeutic strategy against RD. In this study, we aimed to determine whether the subretinal delivery of RPE-derived exosomes (RPE-Exos) can prevent the photoreceptor death in RD. RD was induced in C57BL6 mice by MNU administration. These MNU administered mice received a single subretinal injection of RPE-Exos. Two weeks later, the RPE-Exos induced effects were evaluated via functional, morphological, and behavior examinations. Subretinal delivery of RPE-Exos efficiently ameliorates the visual function impairments, and alleviated the structural damages in the retina of MNU administered mice. Moreover, RPE-Exos exert beneficial effects on the electrical response of the inner retinal circuits. Treatment with RPE-Exos suppressed the expression levels of inflammatory factors, and mitigated the oxidative damage, indicating that subretinal delivery of RPE-Exos constructed a cytoprotective microenvironment in the retina of MNU administered mice. Our data suggest that RPE-Exos have therapeutic effects against the visual impairments and photoreceptor death. These findings will enrich our knowledge of RPE-Exos, and highlight the discovery of a promising medication for RD.

Difference in physical properties of marine soft clay before and after freezing-thawing is the key to study the thawing-settlement. This paper takes the typical soft clay in Ningbo as the research object, and the temperature (−5 ℃, −10 ℃ and −15 ℃) and the thawing conditions (forced thawing and natural thawing) are considered as the influencing factors. Indoor simulation experiment of freezing-thawing process was conducted to quantitatively analyze the differences in physical properties before and after freezing-thawing and to reveal the cause of the difference. The research results show that freezing and thawing results in the redistribution of physical parameters such as moisture content, dry density, pore ratio and permeability of the marine soft clay along the direction of freezing gradient. With the decrease in the cold junction temperature by 1 ℃, the change degree of water content, dry density and void ratio decreases by about 4% − 8%. When forced thawing is adopted, the change degree of soil moisture content is reduced by about 23%, and the change degree of dry density and void ratio is reduced by about 50%. However, the essential reason that different freezing-thawing conditions have various influences on physical parameters is the different amount of water migration and phase variables under different conditions. Thus, exploring water migration and revealing the effects on physical parameter is worthy of further study. The change in physical parameters of marine soft clay before and after freezing-thawing is closely related to the cold junction temperature and the thawing method, and the degree of change is easy to directly affect thawing-settlement. When designing the freezing method of marine soft clay and constructing, reasonable freezing-thawing methods should be selected to reduce the difference in physical properties.

A cross polarized wave (XPW) generation experiment with double BaF2 crystals in air was demonstrated with 120 µJ input pulse. A circular aperture was used to truncate the near field profile of the input beam and remove the outer part of the beam, and circularly symmetric beam profiles were generated at the BaF2 crystal positions. The measured focal spot size was close to the diffraction limit, and the energy stability of XPW was improved from ∼1.89% (without the aperture) to ∼0.67% (with the aperture).

Laodelphax striatellus is a notorious sap-feeding insect that also serves as a vector of rice stripe virus (RSV) and is responsible for a significant decline in rice yield. Pesticide application remains a crucial strategy for controlling insect pests. In recent years, the utilization of biopesticides has gained attention due to their eco-friendliness and suitability for controlling insect pests and pathogens in agriculture. The present study aimed Figureto evaluate the potential efficacy of a microbial pesticide, decoyinine (DCY), as a seed priming agent in rice against SBPH’s biology, feeding behavior, and RSV transmission ability in the laboratory. Here, we revealed that the body weight of females and males and honeydew extraction of RSV-virulent SBPH were (22.50%, 25.0%, and 23.25%, respectively) significantly lower than non-virulent SBPH. Meanwhile, the fecundity of RSV-virulent SBPH females was significantly higher (8.24%) than non-virulent SBPH. However, nymphal survival and RSV transmission (horizontal and vertical) were found to be non-significantly affected by DCY application. Furthermore, DCY-primed rice seedlings significantly prolonged the time period and frequency of the electrical penetration graph (EPG) feeding waveforms (np, N2, and N3), and also reduced the time period of the waveform (N4-b) for both RSV-virulent and non-virulent SBPH strains with reduced RSV inoculation. The recent study provides new insights for DCY application in rice against SBPH by reducing fecundity, body weight, and honeydew contents, which might contribute to modern integrated pest management.

ObjectivePrimary adrenal lymphoma (PAL) is a rare form of adrenal mass. We summarize our experience in its clinical presentation, biochemical indexes, radiological features, pathological information, therapy regimens, and outcomes.MethodsThis was an institutional review board-approved retrospective review of medical records and surgical pathology specimens of patients with a diagnosis of PAL at the Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital and the First Affiliate Hospital of Xiamen University between July 2007 and July 2017.ResultsTwenty-six patients were identified. The mean age at presentation was 60.84 ± 13.14 years with a male-to-female ratio of 2.25:1 (18:8). The most common presenting symptoms were loss of appetite (65%, 17/26), weight loss (62%, 16/26), abdominal pain (58%, 15/26), and fatigue (58%, 15/26). The levels of lactate dehydrogenase (75%, 15/20), β2-microglobulin (100%, 10/10), C-reactive protein (82%, 14/17), and ferritin (88%, 7/8) and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (83%, 10/12) were elevated. Bilateral involvement was seen in 21 of 26 patients (81%); 12 of 19 evaluated patients with bilateral lesions (63%) were confirmed to have adrenal insufficiency. On computed tomography (CT), the mean tumor diameter was 7.31 ± 3.35 cm and the median Hounsfield density was 37.0 HU (range: 31.0–45.0 HU); 67% (10/15) and 27% (4/15) of lesions presented with mild and moderate enhancement after injection of contrast medium. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET)-CT revealed not only an adrenal tumor but also extra-adrenal lesions. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) was the most common phenotype (92%, 24/26). Ninety-two percent (24/26) of patients received chemotherapy while 8% (2/26) received unilateral adrenalectomy plus chemotherapy. The prognosis of PAL was poor, with a general survival time of 7.20 ± 5.18 months.ConclusionPAL is a rare disease. The clinical characteristics of PAL include loss of appetite and weight loss. Endocrine evaluation should be performed to determine whether patients have adrenal insufficiency, especially patients with bilateral lesions. FDG-PET appears to be more accurate than other imaging modalities in revealing extra-adrenal sites. Better therapy is required to improve the poor prognosis of PAL.

As underwater disturbances (natural or artificial) occur in the ocean, moving seawater crossing the geomagnetic fields will produce weak circular currents. These currents can induce measurable magnetic fields, which might be useful for monitoring ocean internal waves using aeromagnetic survey. In this research, a spectral-element method (SEM) based on Gauss–Lobatto–Legendre (GLL) polynomials is presented to characterize the magnetic field induced by the underwater pressure waves. A concise mathematical model is established through combining the acoustic wave equations and Maxwell’s equations. Specifically, the acoustic–magnetic coupling simulation adopts the nodal-based SEM for acoustic analysis and edge-based SEM for electromagnetic analysis. The proposed SEM has spectral accuracy, as the error exponentially decreases with the order of the basis functions. Additionally, by adopting an independent modeling and mesh scheme in two solvers, respectively, the waste of computing resources is avoided. The experimental analysis demonstrates that the induced magnetic fields mechanically propagate with the acoustic wave, producing the pseudo-radiation phenomenon. The signals of these magnetic fields may extend for tens of kilometers and exist for hours under certain circumstances, which provide a theoretical basis for underwater target identification via high-sensitivity atomic magnetometer.

The 6-DOF vibration isolation platform (VIP) is used to isolate vibration in the processing and manufacturing of semiconductor chips, especially electric vehicle chips. The 6-DOF VIP has the characteristics of high position accuracy, fast dynamic response, and short motion travel. In this paper, a novel four-quadrant Lorentz force motor (FQLFM) applied on the 6-DOF VIP is proposed. The structure of this LFM has a high force density, low force fluctuation, and low coupling force. First, the basic structure and operating principle of the proposed FQLFM are presented. Secondly, the expressions of the magnetic field and electromagnetic force are obtained based on an equivalent current model and the permanent magnet mirror-image method (PMMIM). Thirdly, the magnetic field and electromagnetic force characteristics of the proposed FQLFM and an LFM with a traditional bilateral structure are analyzed and compared. The relationship between the force and displacement of the FQLFM is investigated. Moreover, the PMMIM is verified by a 3D finite element analysis (FEA). Finally, the experimental platform for a force test is built and the above results are validated by an experiment.

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is a notorious pest in rice production. The microbial secondary metabolite, decoyinine (DCY), is produced by Streptomyces hygroscopicus. Recent studies found that seed priming with DCY could enhance rice resistance to BPH and Laodelphax striatellus; however, the mechanism of enhancing insect resistance in rice remains unclear. Here, an integrated physio-biochemical and transcriptome analysis was performed on rice priming with DCY after BPH infestation. Defense-related enzymes activities such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), glutathione S transferase (GST), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO), concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), callose, and free amino acids in rice priming with DCY were significantly increased than in control plants after BPH infestation. Concentrations of soluble sugars, sucrose, and glucose were higher in rice treated with DCY than in the control after BPH infestation; however, the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) was significantly decreased in rice treated with DCY after BPH infestation. In the transcriptome analysis, GO functional annotation and KEGG pathway analysis were enriched in defense response, transcription factors, secondary metabolites, reactive oxygen species, and cell wall organization and these data also support physio-biochemical results. The qRT-PCR results further verified the differential expressed genes related to DCY-treated rice responding to BPH. Meanwhile, it indicated that DCY might enhance the resistance of rice to BPH by regulating the rice WRKY transcription factor genes. Our results provide a basis for further exploring the molecular mechanism of the defense response of rice priming with DCY against BPH infestation and could provide valuable resources to control insect pests.

Rice stripe virus (RSV) is transmitted by the small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus, in a circulative-propagative manner. Multiple studies have proved that RSV can manipulate vector insects to facilitate its transmission and can alter the gene expressions in viruliferous SBPH. However, to the best of our knowledge, nobody has investigated the gene expressions in the head of SBPH after RSV acquisition. In this study, to investigate the genes and gene functions regulated by RSV infection in the head of SBPH, we used RNA sequencing to compare the transcriptional profiles between SBPH head samples that acquired RSV or not. Compared with the non-viruliferous SBPH, a total of 336 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the head samples of viruliferous SBPH groups, including 186 up-regulated and 150 down-regulated genes. Here, we focused on DEGs that may be involved in RSV replication or transmission, primarily genes associated with the nervous system, cytochrome P450s, sugar metabolism, the olfactory system, and cuticular process, as well as genes that have been previously reported to affect virus transmission in insect vectors including ubiquitin-protein ligase (E3), ecdysone response gene (E74A), and vitellogenin receptor (VgR). Finally, we verified the accuracy of the transcriptome sequencing results using qRT-PCR by selecting 16 DEGs. Our results can contribute to the understanding of the effects of RSV infection on gene regulation in the head of SBPH and provide insight into the control of plant virus transmission and insect vectors.

The bare surface of BiVO4 photoanode usually suffers from extremely low interfacial charge transfer efficiency which leads to a significantly suppressed photoelectrochemical water splitting performance. Various strategies, including surface modification and the loading of co-catalysts, facilitate the interface charge transfer process in BiVO4. In this study, we demonstrate that CoS2 synthesized from the hydrothermal method can be used as a high-efficient co-catalyst to sufficiently improve the interface charge transfer efficiency in BiVO4. The photoelectrochemical water splitting performance of BiVO4 was significantly improved after CoS2 surface modification. The BiVO4/CoS2 photoanode achieved an excellent photocurrent density of 5.2 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V versus RHE under AM 1.5 G illumination, corresponding to a 3.7 times enhancement in photocurrent compared with bare BiVO4. The onset potential of the BiVO4/CoS2 photoanode was also negatively shifted by 210 mV. The followed systematic combined optical and electrochemical characterization results reveal that the interfacial charge transfer efficiency of BiVO4 was largely improved from less than 20% to more than 70% due tor CoS2 surface modification. The further surface carrier dynamics study performed using an intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy displayed a 6–10 times suppression in surface recombination rate constants for CoS2 modified BiVO4, which suggests that the key reason for the improved interfacial charge transfer efficiency possibly originates from the passivated surface states due to the coating of CoS2.

The brown planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens Stål (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) is one of the most destructive rice pests in Asia. The microbial metabolite decoyinine (DCY) has been extracted from Streptomyces hygroscopicus. Recent studies have suggested that treating rice seeds with DCY could improve the growth and yield of rice. To further assess the effects of priming the seeds of different rice varieties with DCY on rice seedling resistance against BPH, an age-stage, two-sex life table and choice test were applied to investigate the individual fitness, population parameters, and preference behavior of BPHs in this study. The results indicated that feeding on rice seedlings grown from seeds primed with DCY significantly affected BPHs’ adult longevity, oviposition period, fecundity, as well as the net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rm), finite rate of increase (λ), doubling time (DT), and population size in terms of BPH. The honeydew excretions and the weights of BPHs fed on DCY-pretreated rice plants were remarkably lowered. The two-way ANOVA results also showed that there were significant differences in the biological parameters, honeydew excretions, and of BPH weights owing to DCY treatment, rice variety, and the interactions between DCY treatment and rice variety. Additionally, the feeding and oviposition preferences of BPHs for the pretreated rice plants were reduced. Our results imply that the priming of seeds with DCY can improve rice resistance against BPH, which could facilitate the utilization of seed priming as a new avenue for effective crop protection.

As a product generated from incomplete combustion, soot is harmful to people’s health and the environment. In recent decades, much attention has been paid to the control of soot generation in combustion systems. Efforts to reduce soot emissions depend on a basic understanding of the physical and chemical pathways from fuel to soot particles in flames. At the same time, flame synthesis method has become an alternative method for the preparation of carbon nanomaterials because of its advantages of low cost and mass production. Carbon-based materials can be synthesized within the sooting zones in flames. The research of soot formation mechanism in flames can provide support for the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials. In this paper, the effects of additives, temperature, and fuel type on soot formation characteristics and soot nanostructure in diffusion flames are reviewed. The deficiencies and prospects are put forward for future research.

Highly accurate measurements of infrared systems cannot be achieved without precise radiometric calibrations. In order to correctly interpret and process infrared images and monitor the performance of infrared cameras, their radiometric calibration is also required periodically. In this paper, an equivalent calibration method is proposed based on an internal blackbody baffle. It is used for the replacement of a large surface-source blackbody covering the aperture for the field calibration of large-aperture equipment. Subsequently, the expressions of the equivalent calibration conversion function (ECCF) are derived based on the grayscale response of the camera and the calibration models of the two methods, and experimental measurements and fits are performed using a cooled mid-wave infrared camera. The results show that the measured functional form is consistent with the physical meaning. Moreover, in the target imaging experiments, the results of the inversion using the equivalent calibration conversion function and the results of the direct calibration of the external blackbody are largely consistent with the average error of 0.198% between the two, and the maximum error is within 1%. The maximum error between the inversion result of radiation brightness and the actual value of the target is 6.29%, and the accuracy fully meets the radiometric measurement requirements.

Objective Autoimmune hypothalamitis (AHT) is a rare inflammatory disorder that involves the hypothalamus. It remains unclear whether autoimmune hypophysitis (AH) and AHT represent different diseases or different aspects of the same disease. Thus, further investigation of AHT is required. Methods A retrospective review of medical and pathological records of AHT patients from the Chinese PLA General Hospital were examined from January 1, 2005 to May 1, 2017. Clinical data, treatments, and outcomes were investigated. Results Five female patients were identified (median age, 42.6 years). Symptoms included central diabetes insipidus, hypopituitarism, hyperprolactinemia, headache, and hypothalamic syndrome. The following hormonal deficits were noted: follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, and growth hormone. One patient underwent high-dose methylprednisolone pulse treatment (HDMPT) and azathioprine plus intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and two patients underwent HDMPT and two rounds of replacement therapy. During follow-up, one patient died because of non-compliance with therapy and the others were in remission or they recovered. Conclusions AHT had similar MRI results, pathology, and treatment compared with AH. Thus, it may be a subtype of AH, and AHT patients may also show hypothalamic syndrome.

Ultrasonic-assisted soldering, as a type of new welding method, is widely used in the field of electronic packaging. This research used the immersion method to study the dissolution behavior of copper in liquid tin and the growth of IMC at 513, 543, and 573 K with/without ultrasonic waves. The amount of copper dissolved and IMC layer thickness were measured and the dissolution activation energy of Cu/Sn was calculated. Experimental results indicated that Without ultrasonic waves, the amount of copper dissolved increased nonlinearly with immersion time. However, with ultrasonic waves, the amount of copper dissolved increased linearly with immersion time. The amount of copper dissolved in liquid tin increased considerably with ultrasonic waves, and the dissolution rate increased by 7–8 times. The thickness of the IMC layer decreased as the ultrasonic time and ultrasonic power increased. Meanwhile, the ultrasonic waves reduced the dissolution activation energy of the Sn/Cu system.

To enhance the bond strength of the nanosized silica/epoxy interface and modify the dielectric properties of nanocomposites, a plasma-assisted surface modification method is proposed for inorganic nanofillers. A gas–liquid two-phase dielectric barrier discharge at room temperature was initially used to graft the terminal carboxyl hyperbranched polyester onto the nanosilica surface. Then, epoxy resin composites filled with 1–7 wt. % nanosilica were prepared. The effects of the plasma-treated nanosilica on the dielectric properties of the epoxy resins were analyzed. The experimental results demonstrated that a 2 nm-thick film of hyperbranched polyester (HBP) was successfully deposited onto the nanosilica surface via the HBP/plasma treatment. Compared with the pristine epoxy resins at room temperature, the permittivity constant of the proposed nanocomposites decreased from 4.2 to 3.3 and their AC breakdown strength increased by 38%. Moreover, the dielectric loss factor and DC conductivity decreased by 40.7% and 48.4%, respectively. Additionally, deep traps of 0.99–1.53 eV were observed in the nanocomposites. It can be concluded that HBP/plasma processing creates strong chemical bonds and compact nanofiller/polymer interfacial regions. In addition, HBP/plasma processing modified the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. The results of this study indicate that HBP/plasma treatment is an effective method for the surface modification of inorganic nanofillers and for the modification of the dielectric properties of polymer nanocomposites.

We demonstrated extra-cavity gain narrowing pre-compensating in a regenerative amplifier with a multi-order triple-wavelength waveplate (WP). With a 1.117 mm thickness quartz waveplate, which was placed on the stretcher, the gain narrowing effect was reduced efficiently, the output spectral bandwidth was broadened from 25 nm to 40 nm, the broadest spectral pulse was compressed to 33.2 fs and the output energy was 1.5 mJ, the as same as with no waveplate. Then, the amplified pulses were used for cross polarized wave (XPW) generation, and the generated XPW spectra were broadened from 45 nm without WP to 68 nm with WP, with a conversion efficiency of 15%. This simple method can produce broader output spectra with a broader seed beam.
