Abstract As one of the most effective methods to improve the accuracy and robustness of speech tasks, the audio–visual fusion approach has recently been introduced into the field of Keyword Spotting (KWS). However, existing audio–visual keyword spotting models are limited to detecting isolated words, while keyword spotting for unconstrained speech is still a challenging problem. To this end, an Audio–Visual Keyword Transformer (AVKT) network is proposed to spot keywords in unconstrained video clips. The authors present a transformer classifier with learnable CLS tokens to extract distinctive keyword features from the variable‐length audio and visual inputs. The outputs of audio and visual branches are combined in a decision fusion module. As humans can easily notice whether a keyword appears in a sentence or not, our AVKT network can detect whether a video clip with a spoken sentence contains a pre‐specified keyword. Moreover, the position of the keyword is localised in the attention map without additional position labels. Experimental results on the LRS2‐KWS dataset and our newly collected PKU‐KWS dataset show that the accuracy of AVKT exceeded 99% in clean scenes and 85% in extremely noisy conditions. Both the Shandong Plain in China and the Greater Houston Area in the United States have land subsidence problems that were caused by excessive groundwater pumping. Houston has accumulated more than 100 years of monitoring results and more than 50 years of prevention and control experience, which has certain similarities with the ground subsidence monitoring and control experience of Shandong Plain area in the past 30 years. To further promote and strengthen land subsidence monitoring and prevention, groundwater resource management, digital empowerment, and data sharing in Shandong Province, in this article a comparative study was conducted on the causes of land subsidence, monitoring techniques, groundwater management, and land subsidence prevention and control in the Shandong Plain and the Greater Houston Area. The results indicate that excessive extraction of groundwater is the main cause of land subsidence, and land subsidence management measures based on limiting groundwater extraction have been taken. Currently, the area and rate of subsidence are decreasing in both places. The monitoring methods and techniques used in two places are basically the same, mainly using precision leveling surveying, bench mark fixed on different stratum or borehole extensometers, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) techniques, and the density and frequency of observations are gradually increasing. Meanwhile, the management and sharing of observation data is different. The land subsidence management administration agencies in the Houston area are mainly responsible for the collection and sharing of observation data, and do not undertake data processing and research tasks. All observation data are open to the public, and scientific researches based on observation data is mainly undertaken by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and universities. Research results are published on USGS reports or journal articles. Differently, land subsidence and groundwater level monitoring in Shandong Plain are undertaken by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Water Resources, and its affiliated institutions are responsible for field observation, data storage, data analysis and research, as well as formulating regulations for groundwater management. There are certain difficulties in data sharing and integration between departments, which limits in-depth and systematic research on land subsidence.

Abstract Audio‐visual wake word spotting is a challenging multi‐modal task that exploits visual information of lip motion patterns to supplement acoustic speech to improve overall detection performance. However, most audio‐visual wake word spotting models are only suitable for simple single‐speaker scenarios and require high computational complexity. Further development is hindered by complex multi‐person scenarios and computational limitations in mobile environments. In this paper, a novel audio‐visual model is proposed for on‐device multi‐person wake word spotting. Firstly, an attention‐based audio‐visual voice activity detection module is presented, which generates an attention score matrix of audio and visual representations to derive active speaker representation. Secondly, the knowledge distillation method is introduced to transfer knowledge from the large model to the on‐device model to control the size of our model. Moreover, a new audio‐visual dataset, PKU‐KWS, is collected for sentence‐level multi‐person wake word spotting. Experimental results on the PKU‐KWS dataset show that this approach outperforms the previous state‐of‐the‐art methods.

Abstract Expansive soils pose a significant challenge in geotechnical engineering, especially in coastal areas. While research has mainly focused on their elastic properties, this study explores the overlooked aspect of inelastic subsidence during prolonged droughts, utilizing decade‐long GPS datasets from the University of Houston Coastal Center. Our findings reveal substantial subsidence, approximately one to two dm, during the summer droughts of 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2023, due to compaction within the upper 4 m of expansive soils. Inelastic subsidence constitutes roughly 10% of the total subsidence, resulting in step‐like permanent land elevation loss over time. Notably, drought‐induced subsidence is prominent in open‐field areas with expansive soils but is minor in built‐up areas or in non‐expansive soil regions. The occurrence of inelastic subsidence challenges traditional assessments of relative sea‐level rise and coastal flooding, emphasizing the need to consider it in coastal infrastructure planning for enhanced resilience against climate uncertainties.

Limoniidae, the most speciose family in the superfamily Tipuloidea, consists of four subfamilies and more than 11,000 species. However, mitochondrial (mt) genome sequences, which have been widely used for phylogenetic study, are available for only 11 species across three subfamilies. Thus, a larger variety of mt genome sequences in Limoniidae are required to improve our understanding of tipuloid phylogeny and genomic evolution. Here we present mt genomes of Elephantomyia (Elephantomyia) inulta Alexander, 1938 and Helius (Helius) pluto Alexander, 1932, representing the first mt genomes of the tribe Elephantomyiini (Limoniidae). The two mt genomes are typical circular DNA molecules and show similar gene order, nucleotide composition and codon usage. Standard ATN start and TAR stop codons are present in most protein-coding genes. All transfer RNA (tRNA) genes exhibited the cloverleaf secondary structure typical for metazoans except in tRNASer(AGN), which lacks the dihydrouridine arm. Phylogenetic analyses were performed based on four nucleotide matrixes for the currently sequenced species of Tipuloidea using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods. Four-cluster likelihood mapping was used to study incongruent signals between different topologies. Pediciidae is supported as the earliest lineage in Tipuloidea, and the sister-group relationship between Cylindrotomidae and Tipulidae is also supported, but the monophyly of Limoniidae is not supported. Our study also supports the monophyly of Elephantomyiini (Elephantomyia + Helius), as one of origins of flower-visiting in Limoniidae. Although Elephantomyiini is sister to Limoniinae + Epiphragma (Limnophilinae) in our study, a more precise understanding of its phylogenetic position in Tipuloidea will require additional studies that include a broader species sample.

The genus Helius Lepeletier & Serville, 1828 is recorded in Guangxi, China for the first time with the following three species belonging to the subgenus H. (Helius): H. (H.) damingshanus sp. nov., H. (H.) nipponensis (Alexander, 1913) and H. (H.) stenorhynchus stenorhynchus Alexander, 1954. Among them, H. (H.) stenorhynchus stenorhynchus is also a new record in China. Their descriptions and illustrations, as well as the first key to Chinese H. (Helius) crane flies, are presented.

BackgroundThe production and consumption of high polar pesticides in China are the largest in the world. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a method with fast analysis, large flux, and high accuracy to determine the residues of these pesticides in food. ObjectiveTo establish a method for the determination of eight highly polar pesticides [chlormequat, paraquat, difenzoquat, cyromazine, propamocarb, glyphosate, (aminomethyl)-phosphonic acid, and glufosinate] in vegetables and fruits by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. MethodsAfter comparing various types of hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) columns, and optimizing pH value and buffer concentration of mobile phase, effective chromatographic retention and separation of selected eight pesticides were achieved. Based on the optimization of mass spectrometry under chromatographic conditions, a multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) channel of target compounds was established. In the sample pretreatment, through optimization of water content, extraction solvent, and purification method, a final MRM mode of ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used for detection, and the isotope internal standard method was used for quantification. The accuracy and the precision of the method were evaluated using recovery and relative standard deviation. The established method was applied to detect 57 samples of retail vegetables and fruits to investigate the adaptability of the proposed method and the residual levels of selected high polar pesticides. ResultsFor positive ion electrospray ionization (ESI+) detection, we chose Sielc Obelisc R as chromatographic column, and 20 mmol·L−1 ammonium formate solution (pH=3±0.05) and acetonitrile as mobile phase; for negative ion electrospray ionization (ESI−) detection, we chose Shodex Asahipak NH2P-50 2D as chromatographic column, and 5 mmol·L−1 ammonium acetate solution (pH=11±0.05) and acetonitrile as mobile phase to obtain good chromatographic separation and peak shape. Under the optimal conditions of sample water content standardization, using 2% acidified methanol as extraction solvent, and C18 dispersed solid phase extraction purification, the linearity ranges of five analytes (chlormequat, paraquat, difenzoquat, cyromazine, and propamocarb) and three analytes [glyphosate, (aminomethyl)phosphonic acid, and glufosinate] were 1.00-100 μg·L−1 and 5.00-500 μg·L−1 (both correlation coefficients>0.999) respectively, the detection limits were 0.002-0.010 mg·kg−1, and the limits of quantification (LOQ) were 0.005-0.025 mg·kg−1. At three spiked levels (LOQ, 2LOQ, and 5LOQ), the recoveries were in the range of 85.3%–113.2%, and the relative standard deviations were 1.5%–9.5% (n=6). Three target pesticides (chlormequat, cyromazine, and propamocarb) were detected in 57 samples of retail vegetables and fruits, and the residue of chlormequat in cowpea exceeded the maximum residue limit. ConclusionThe established method of HILIC combined with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and isotopic internal standard quantification has the characteristics of simplicity, stability, and easy operation, which is suitable for rapid screening and quantitative detection of selected eight high polar pesticide residues in large quantities of vegetables and fruits, and provides technical support for monitoring and risk assessment of high polar pesticide residues.

Lung cancer is one of the most severe forms of malignancy and a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, of which non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most primary type observed in the clinic. NSCLC is mainly treated with surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Additionally, targeted therapy and immunotherapy have also shown promising results. Several immunotherapies, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, have been developed for clinical use and have benefited patients with NSCLC. However, immunotherapy faces several challenges like poor response and unknown effective population. It is essential to identify novel predictive markers to further advance precision immunotherapy for NSCLC. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) present an important research direction. In this review, we focus on the role of EVs as a biomarker in NSCLC immunotherapy considering various perspectives, including the definition and properties of EVs, their role as biomarkers in current NSCLC immunotherapy, and different EV components as biomarkers in NSCLC immunotherapy research. We describe the cross-talk between the role of EVs as biomarkers and novel technical approaches or research concepts in NSCLC immunotherapy, such as neoadjuvants, multi-omics analysis, and the tumour microenvironment. This review will provide a reference for future research to improve the benefits of immunotherapy for patients with NSCLC.

Abstract Groundwater-withdrawal-induced land subsidence has been a big concern in Montgomery County, Texas, U.S. since the 2000s. As of 2020, approximately half of the entire county is experiencing subsidence over 5 mm/year. This study aims to investigate ongoing land subsidence in Montgomery County using groundwater-level, extensometer, and GPS datasets. According to this study, land subsidence in Montgomery County since the mid-2000s is primarily contributed by sediment compaction in the Evangeline and Jasper aquifers; the compaction of Jasper aquifer contributes approximately one-third of the land subsidence since the mid-2000s; the pre-consolidation heads of the Chicot, Evangeline, and Jasper aquifers in Montgomery County are close to each other, approximately 15–25 m below mean sea level; the virgin-compaction/head-decline ratio is approximately 1:250 in the Evangeline aquifer and 1:800 in the Jasper aquifer in central and southern Montgomery County. As of 2020, the Jasper groundwater-level altitude is approximately 20–40 m below the pre-consolidation head in the central and southern Montgomery County; the Evangeline groundwater-level altitude is about 40–60 m below the pre-consolidation head. Land subsidence will continue to occur as long as the groundwater-level altitude in either the Evangeline or the Jasper aquifer remains below the pre-consolidation head.

Three species of the Neoperla montivaga group are described from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China, including two new species, N. falcatata sp. nov. and N. shangsiensis sp. nov., and a new record for Guangxi: N. bilineata Wu & Claassen, 1934. Illustrations and color images are provided for the three species mentioned above, and the new species is compared with related congeners in the group. Notes on the distribution of the Neoperla species known from Guangxi are also given.

In vitro preparation of mRNA is a key step for mRNA therapeutics. The widely used T7 RNA polymerase (RNAP) was shown to have many by-products during in vitro transcription (IVT) process, among which double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) is the major by-product to activate the intracellular immune response. Here, we describe the use of a new VSW-3 RNAP that reduced dsRNA production during IVT and the resulting mRNA exhibited low inflammatory stimulation in cells. Compared to T7 RNAP transcripts, these mRNA exhibited superior protein expression levels, with an average of 14-fold increase in Hela cells and 5-fold increase in mice. In addition, we found that VSW-3 RNAP did not require modified nucleotides to improve protein production of IVT products. Our data suggest that VSW-3 RNAP could be a useful tool for mRNA therapeutics.

Abstract The frequency of extreme climate events has escalated since 1980. In February 2021, an unprecedented winter storm dumped the snow record in Texas. It claimed hundreds of lives and evolved into a national major disaster. However, we still lack a systematic approach to quantify large‐scale snow depth. Here, we use the differential coherence from Sentinel‐1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery to characterize the surface disturbance due to this winter storm. We further rely on machine‐learning algorithms to quantify Texas statewide snow depth using surface disturbance map, SAR amplitude, precipitation, temperature, surface topography, land cover, and population. Our approach can provide an independent snow depth estimation. Approximately 89% of Texas accumulated over 30‐mm snow depth. The SAR and machine‐learning integrated methods can also be applied to quantify other forms of surface disturbance and to ultimately help natural hazard mitigation.

Dicranoptychini is a tribe in the subfamily Limoniinae (Diptera, Tipuloidea, and Limoniidae) and includes only the genus Dicranoptycha Osten Sacken, 1860. However, the species diversity of the tribe in China was seriously underestimated, and the taxonomic status of Dicranoptycha has long been controversial. In this study, types of Chinese Dicranoptycha species and specimens collected from several localities in China were examined, and the first mitochondrial (mt) genome of the tribe Dicranoptychini is presented. Two Dicranoptycha species, D. jiufengshana sp. nov. and D. shandongensis sp. nov., from China, are described and illustrated as new to science. A Palaearctic species, D. prolongata Alexander, 1938, is recorded in China for the first time. In addition, the complete mt genome of D. shandongensis sp. nov. is sequenced and annotated, indicating that it is a typical circular DNA molecule with a length of 16,157 bp and shows a similar gene order, nucleotide composition, and codon usage to mt genomes of other Tipuloidea species. The two pairs of repeat elements are found in its control region. Phylogenetic results confirm the sister-group relationship between Cylindrotomidae and Tipulidae, question the position of the genus Epiphragma Osten Sacken, 1860 in Limoniidae, and indicate that Dicranoptychini may be a basal lineage within Limoniinae.

School buildings gather a large number of underage students, and the disastrous consequences of fire in such buildings are very serious, which is one of the key concerns of society in fire prevention and control. This study takes a “[” type kindergarten teaching building as the background and constructs a BIM–FDS building fire simulation model to reveal the fire smoke dispersion law under the coupling of the typical building structure and fire protection systems. The results show that the stairwells on both sides of the “[” type building are the main channels for the diffusion of fire smoke, and the asymmetry of the stairwell structure will cause apparent differences in the diffusion of smoke. Using the natural smoke exhaust in the stairwells of low-rise buildings does not aggravate the spread of smoke in the building and is conducive to smoke emissions. The high-pressure water mist system is superior to the water spray system in fire extinguishing and controlling room temperature. While it reduces smoke exhaust performance, it does not adversely affect personnel evacuation. This study systematically reveals the law of diffusion of fire smoke from “[”-type teaching buildings, which can support the design of similar building structures, ventilation, fire protection, and the formulation of fire escape plans.

Three Chinese species of the genus Phanoperla are reviewed. A new species, P. cheni sp. nov., is proposed from Guangdong, southern China, and compared with related taxa. Neoperlops binodosa Wu, 1973 is confirmed from Hainan Province of China on the basis of re-examination of types from the island, but it is transferred to the genus Phanoperla and is placed as a synonym of P. pallipennis (Banks, 1938). A note on the distribution of the genus Phanoperla is also given.

Flurochloridone (FLC), a wildly used herbicide, could induce hepatotoxicity after long-term exposure to male rat, in addition to its reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent reproductive toxicity. The hepatotoxicity effect and mechanism was investigeted using 1, 10 and 100 μmol L−1 FLC treated BRL-3A liver cell in this study. The function of mitochondrial respiration, glycolysis rate and real time ATP production rate are determined by seahorse XF analyzer, and the bio-transformers of FLC, intermediates of TCA cycle and glycolysis, and related amino acids are determined and identified by [U-13C] Glucose metabolic flux technology based on UPLC-HRMS. The mRNA expression of cytochrome P450s and the key regulatory enzymes of glucose metabolism and γ- glutamyl cycle pathway. The protein expressions of protein kinase B (AKT) and glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3β) were determined. The results show dechlorination and glutathione (GSH) conjugate products of FLC are predominant bio-transformmers after 24 h treatment in BRL-3A cell. FLC could enhance glycolysis function and inhibit mitochondrial aerobic respiratory, which is accompanied by the decreased total ATP level and ATP produced rate. Increased glucose-6-phosphate, fructose-6-phosphate, pyruvate and lactate levels, and elevated level of GSH and its precursor 5-glutamate-cysteine (γ-Glu-Cys) are observed in FLC treated cells, which indicates that energy metabolism dysfunction and GSH accumulation could be potentially mediated by activating γ- Glutamyl cycle pathway. Conclusively, FLC induced hepatotoxicity could be potentially related to some free radical reactions, including inhibiting mitochondrial function, glucose metabolism via glycolysis, regulating γ- glutamyl cycle pathway to promote reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, and then induced cell apoptosis by inhibiting AKT/GSK-3β signal.

This research explores the effect of the sports education model implemented in physical education on college students' learning motivation and outcomes. The sports education model was compared with traditional physical education teaching as a control group. Participants were 60 college students in two classes. The ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction) Learning Motivation Scale, the Physical Education Affection Scale and a learning sheet were used for pre- and post-test comparison. Quantitative analysis was carried out on the post-test data using a dependent sample t-test and an independent sample t-test. The study found that: (1) the students in the sports education model group showed clear progress in learning motivation, affection, cognition and behavior, whereas the students in the traditional physical education group showed clear progress in cognition but no significant improvement in learning motivation, affection or behavior; (2) the sports education model group is clearly superior to the traditional physical education group in terms of learning motivation, affection, cognition, and behavior. This research shows that students are highly receptive to the sports education model, with a positive attitude and a high degree of motivation to learn to actively change their sports behavior. The sports education model brings several benefits: (1) it is an effective teaching method; (2) students' sense of responsibility, leadership and participation can be improved; (3) the preliminary homework and course structure descriptions take more time to compose, but can better guide students' motivation for learning physical education and can enhance teachers' professional growth.

The South-to-North Water Diversion (SNWD) is a multi-decadal infrastructure project in China aimed at alleviating severe water shortages in north China. It has imposed broad social, economic, environmental, and ecological impacts since 2015, particularly in the Beijing-Tianjin metropolitan area. Sentinel-1A/B Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) (2014–2021), Global Positioning System (GPS) (2010–2021), and hydraulic-head data are used to assess the impacts on ongoing land subsidence in Tianjin in this study. Additionally, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is employed to highlight primary factors controlling the recent land subsidence. Our results show that the reduced groundwater pumping has slowed down the overall subsidence since 2019 due to SNWD. As of 2021, the subsiding area (>5 mm/year) has reduced to about 5400 km2, approximately 85% of the subsiding area before SNWD; the areas of rapid subsidence (>30 mm/year) and extremely rapid subsidence (>50 mm/year) have reduced to 1300 km2 and 280 km2, respectively, approximately 70% and 60% of the areas before SNWD. Recent subsidence (2016–2021) was primarily contributed by the inelastic compaction of clays in deep aquifers of Aquifers III and IV ranging from approximately 200 to 450 m below the land surface. The ongoing rapid subsidence (>30 mm/year) in Tianjin is limited to border areas adjacent to large industrial cities (e.g., Langfang, Tanshan, Cangzhou) in Hebei Province. Ongoing subsidence will cease when hydraulic heads in the deep Aquifers (IV and V) recover to the new pre-consolidation head, approximately 45 m below the land surface, and subsidence will not be reinitiated as long as the hydraulic heads remain above the new pre-consolidation head. This study reveals the importance of coordinating groundwater and surface water uses at local, regional, and national scales for land subsidence mitigation.

For approximately 100 years, the Houston region has been adversely impacted by land subsidence associated with excessive groundwater withdrawals. The rapidly growing population in the Houston region means the ongoing subsidence must be vigilantly monitored. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has become a powerful tool for remotely mapping land-surface deformation over time and space. However, the humid weather and the heavy vegetation have significantly degraded the performance of InSAR techniques in the Houston region. This study introduced an approach integrating GPS and Sentinel-1 InSAR datasets for mapping long-term (2015–2019) and short-term (inter-annual, seasonal) subsidence within the greater Houston region. The root-mean-square (RMS) of the detrended InSAR-displacement time series is able to achieve a subcentimeter level, and the uncertainty (95% confidence interval) of the InSAR-derived subsidence rates is able to achieve a couple of millimeters per year for 5-year or longer datasets. The InSAR mapping results suggest the occurrence of moderate ongoing subsidence (~1 cm/year) in nothwestern Austin County, northern Waller County, western Liberty County, and the city of Mont Belvieu in Champers County. Subsidence in these areas was not recognized in previous GPS-based investigations. The InSAR mapping results also suggest that previous GPS-based investigations overestimated the ongoing subsidence in southwestern Montgomery County, but underestimated the ongoing subsidence in the northeastern portion of the county. We also compared the InSAR- and GPS-derived seasonal ground movements (subsidence and heave). The amplitudes of the seasonal signals from both datasets are comparable, below 4 mm within non-subsiding areas and over 6 mm in subsiding (>1 cm/year) areas. This study indicates that groundwater-level changes in the Evangeline aquifer are the primary reason for ongoing long-term and seasonal subsidence in the Houston region. The former is dominated by inelastic deformation, and the latter is dominated by elastic deformation. Both could cause infrastructure damage. This study demonstrated the potential of employing the GPS- and InSAR-integrated method (GInSAR) for near-real-time subsidence monitoring in the greater Houston region. The near-real-time monitoring would also provide timely information for understanding the dynamic of groundwater storage and improving both long-term and short-term groundwater resource management.

Houston, Texas, is one of the earliest regions to employ continuous GPS technology for land subsidence monitoring. Currently, there are over 200 permanent GPS stations located in the greater Houston area. The need for a consistent and stable reference frame to precisely interpret local ground deformation has become critically important since the 1990s, because of the significant spreading of subsidence. We have established a stable Houston reference frame, designated Houston16, using publicly available GPS observations (>5 years) from 15 Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) located outside of the greater Houston area. Applications of the reference frame in subsidence and faulting studies are demonstrated in this article. Houston16 is aligned in origin and scale with the International GNSS Reference Frame of 2008 (IGS08). A 7-parameter method was employed to transform the GPS-derived positional time series from IGS08 to Houston16. The primary product of this study is the seven parameters for transforming Earth-Centered-Earth-Fixed XYZ coordinates from IGS08 to Houston16. The frame stability of Houston16 is approximately 1 mm/year. Houston16 will be updated every few years to mitigate degradation of the frame's stability with time and to synchronize with future updates of the IGS reference frame. Two new species of Nemouridae of the genus Indonemoura Baumann, 1975, Indonemoura quadrata sp. n. and Indonemoura quadrispina sp. n., are described from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China, on the basis of both sexes and larval stage. The affinities towards related species are discussed, together with generic characters of the larvae. Indonemoura scalprata (Li & Yang, 2007) is recorded from Guangxi for the first time, and its hitherto unknown female is described.

Background: Early-life carbamate exposure during developmental period has been linked with adverse health effects and attracted attention. Methods: Three hundred and three children at age of seven were included in the current study. Urinary carbofuranphenol concentrations were measured using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Verbal, performance and full-scale intelligence quotients (IQV, IQP, and IQFS) were assessed using Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Chinese Revised. Generalized linear models were used to explore the associations between carbofuranphenol levels and IQs. Generalized estimating equations were used to explore long-term health effect and sensitive time window. Results: Carbofuranphenol was detected in 96.6% of the seven-year-old urinary samples, the geometric mean, median, and inter quartile range of the carbofuranphenol concentrations were 0.67 μg/L, 0.30 μg/L, and 0.09–3.72 μg/L, respectively, which were similar with the level of three-year-old children from the SMBCS cohort. Seven-year-old carbofuranphenol level was negatively associated with IQP [β = −0.044; 95% confidence interval (CI): −0.087, −0.001; p = 0.045]. Three-year-old carbofuranphenol level was negatively associated with IQP (β = −0.100; 95% CI: −0.186, −0.014; p = 0.022) and IQFS (β = −0.087; 95% CI: −0.173, −0.001; p = 0.047). Carbamate exposure of maternal and children at both three and seven years old had negative associations with IQP (β = −0.089; 95% CI: −0.171, −0.007; p = 0.034), and IQFS (β = −0.064; 95% CI: −0.127, −0.000; p = 0.049) of children at age of seven. Conclusion: Results of the present study verify that children in an agricultural region of China were widely exposed to carbamate pesticides. Carbamate exposure in utero and at three and seven years may adversely impact children’s neurodevelopment.

Background: Adenylyl cyclase type 9 (ADCY9) modulates signal transduction by producing the second messenger cyclic AMP. It has been reported that ADCY9 gene polymorphisms were associated with cancer development. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ADCY9 gene polymorphisms could contribute to the susceptibility of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the Chinese Han population.Methods: In the present study, five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ADCY9 were genotyped using Agena MassARRAY platform in 876 subjects from China. Logistic regression was used to assess the effects of SNPs on HCC risk. Associations were also evaluated for HCC risk stratified by age and gender. False discovery rate (FDR) was used to correct multiple testing.Results: After adjusting for age and gender, we found a significant relationship between heterozygous genotypes of rs2531995 and HCC risk (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.01–1.77, p = 0.045). ADCY9 rs2230742 had a strong relationship with lower risk of HCC in allele (p = 0.006), co-dominant (p = 0.023), dominant (p = 0.010), and additive (p = 0.006) models. Stratified analysis showed that rs879620 increased HCC risk and rs2230742 was associated with lower risk of HCC in the individuals aged 55 or younger, rs2531992 significantly decreased HCC risk in the elder group (age > 55). For women, rs2230742 and rs2230741 were significantly associated with HCC risk in multiple models (p < 0.05). FDR analysis showed that rs2230742 could protect individuals from HCC risk in the allele model (FDR-p = 0.030). In addition, haplotype analysis indicated that Crs879620Ars2230742Ars2230741 haplotype was a protective factor for HCC (OR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.50–0.89, p = 0.007, FDR-p = 0.028).Conclusion: Our findings suggest that ADCY9 gene polymorphisms are associated with HCC risk in the Chinese Han population.

Objective: Prenatal exposure to heavy metals, pesticides and phenols has been suggested to interfere with neurodevelopment, but the neurotoxicity of their mixtures is still unclear. We aimed to elucidate the associations of maternal urinary concentrations of selected chemical mixtures with intelligence quotient (IQ) in children. Methods: Maternal urinary concentrations of selected heavy metals, pesticide metabolites, and phenols were quantified in pregnant women who participated in the Sheyang Mini Birth Cohort Study (SMBCS) from June 2009 to January 2010. At age 7 years, child’s IQ score was assessed using the Chinese version of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (C-WISC) by trained pediatricians. Generalized linear regression models (GLM), Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models and elastic net regression (ENR) models were used to assess the associations of urinary concentrations individual chemicals and their mixtures with IQ scores of the 7-year-old children. Results: Of 326 mother-child pairs, single-chemical models indicated that prenatal urinary concentrations of lead (Pb) and bisphenol A (BPA) were significantly negatively associated with full intelligence quotient (FIQ) among children aged 7 years [β = −2.31, 95% confidence interval (CI): −4.13, −0.48; p = 0.013, sex interaction p-value = 0.076; β = −1.18, 95% CI: −2.21, −0.15; p = 0.025; sex interaction p-value = 0.296, for Pb and BPA, respectively]. Stratified analysis by sex indicated that the associations were only statistically significant in boys. In multi-chemical BKMR and ENR models, statistically significant inverse association was found between prenatal urinary Pb level and boy’s FIQ scores at 7 years. Furthermore, BKMR analysis indicated that the overall mixture was associated with decreases in boy’s IQ when all the chemicals’ concentrations were at their 75th percentiles or higher, compared to at their 50th percentiles. ENR models revealed that maternal urinary Pb levels were statistically significantly associated with lower FIQ scores (β = −2.20, 95% CI: −4.20, −0.20; p = 0.031). Conclusions: Prenatal exposure to selected chemical mixtures may affect intellectual performance at 7 years of age, particularly in boys. Pb and BPA were suspected as primary chemicals associated with child neurodevelopment.

A remarkable new genus and species of Nemourinae, Sinonemura balangshana gen. et sp. n., is described from Balang Mountains, Sichuan, southwestern China. The description is based on morphology and molecular data. The Nemourinae genera related to the new taxon are re-evaluated on the basis of comparative functional morphology of male epiproct. Notes on the Asian distribution of the Nemourinae are also given.

Peiminine is a compound isolated from Bolbostemma paniculatum (Maxim) Franquet (Cucurbitaceae family), which has demonstrated antitumor activities. But its precise molecular mechanism underlying antitumor activity remain elusive. In this study, peiminine-induced apoptosis towards human hepatocellular carcinoma and its molecular mechanism were investigated. MTT assay was employed to assess anticancer effects of peiminine upon Hela, HepG2, SW480 and MCF-7 cell lines. Nuclear staining and flow cytometry were carried out to detect apoptosis induced by peiminine. Mitochondrial membrane potential evaluation and Western blot analysis were performed to investigate the mechanism of peiminine-induced apoptosis. The results showed peiminine reduced the viability of HepG2 cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner and had an IC50 of 4.58 μg/mL at 24h. Peiminine significantly increased the percentage of apoptotic cells and the mitochondrial membrane potential dose-dependently in HepG2 cells. The results of Western blotting indicated the expressions of Bcl-2, procaspase-3, procaspase-8, procaspase-9, and PARP decreased in HepG2 cells treated with peiminine, while the expressions of Bax, caspase-3, caspase-8, caspase-9, and cleaved PARP1 increased. The result suggests that peiminine can induce apoptosis in human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells through both extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways.

We have established a stable regional geodetic reference frame using long-history (13.5 years on average) observations from 55 continuously operated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The regional reference frame, designated as GOM20, is aligned in origin and scale with the International GNSS Reference Frame 2014 (IGS14). The primary product from this study is the seven-parameters for transforming the Earth-Centered-Earth-Fixed (ECEF) Cartesian coordinates from IGS14 to GOM20. The frame stability of GOM20 is approximately 0.3 mm/year in the horizontal directions and 0.5 mm/year in the vertical direction. The regional reference frame can be confidently used for the time window from the 1990s to 2030 without causing positional errors larger than the accuracy of 24-h static GNSS measurements. Applications of GOM20 in delineating rapid urban subsidence, coastal subsidence and faulting, and sea-level rise are demonstrated in this article. According to this study, subsidence faster than 2 cm/year is ongoing in several major cities in central Mexico, with the most rapid subsidence reaching to 27 cm/year in Mexico City; a large portion of the Texas and Louisiana coasts are subsiding at 3 to 6.5 mm/year; the average sea-level-rise rate (with respect to GOM20) along the Gulf coast is 2.6 mm/year with a 95% confidence interval of ±1 mm/year during the past five decades. GOM20 provides a consistent platform to integrate ground deformational observations from different remote sensing techniques (e.g., GPS, InSAR, LiDAR, UAV-Photogrammetry) and ground surveys (e.g., tide gauge, leveling surveying) into a unified geodetic reference frame and enables multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research.

Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek, the plant source for many kinds of drugs in traditional Chinese medicine, is widely distributed in South China, especially in Fujian. Recent studies about B. cusia mainly focus on its chemical composition and pharmacological effects, but further analysis of the plant's gene functions and expression is required to better understand the synthesis of its effective compounds. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is a powerful method for gene expression analysis. It is necessary to select a suitable reference gene for expression normalization to ensure the accuracy of RT-qPCR results. Ten candidate reference genes were selected from the transcriptome datasets of B. cusia in this study, and the expression stability was assessed across 60 samples representing different tissues and organs under various conditions, including ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, hormonal stimuli (jasmonic acid methyl ester and abscisic acid), and in different plant organs. By employing different algorithms, such as geNorm, NormFinder, and BestKeeper, which are complementary approaches based on different statistical procedures, 18S rRNA was found to be the most stable gene under UV irradiation and hormonal stimuli, whereas ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 was the best suitable gene for different plant organs. This novel study aimed to screen for suitable reference genes and corresponding primer pairs specifically designed for gene expression studies in B. cusia, in particular for RT-qPCR analyses.

Shield tunneling under rivers often requires monitoring riverbed deformations in near real-time. However, it is challenging to measure riverbed deformation with conventional survey techniques. This study introduces a comprehensive method that uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) of the USA and the BeiDou navigation satellite system (BeiDou) of China to monitor riverbed deformation during the construction of twin tunnels beneath the Hutuo River in Shijiazhuang, China. A semi-permanent GPS network with one base station outside the river and six rover stations within the river was established for conducting near real-time and long-term monitoring. The distances between the base and the rover antennas are within two kilometers. The network was continuously operating for eight months from April to December 2018. The method is comprised of three components: (1) Monitoring the stability of the base station using precise point positioning (PPP) method, a stable regional reference frame, and a seasonal ground deformation model; (2) monitoring the relative positions of rover stations using the carrier-phase double-difference (DD) positioning method in near real-time; and (3) detecting abrupt and gradual displacements at both base and rover stations using an automated change point detection algorithm. The method is able to detect abrupt positional-changes as minor as five millimeters in near real-time and gradual positional-changes at a couple of millimeters per day within a week. The method has the flexibility of concurrent processing different GPS and BeiDou data sessions (e.g., every 15 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour, one day) for diffident monitoring purposes. This study indicates that BeiDou observations can also achieve few-millimeter-accuracy for measuring displacements. Parallel processing GPS and BeiDou observations can improve the reliability of near real-time structural deformation monitoring and minimize false alerts. The method introduced in this article can be applied to other urban areas for near real-time and long-term structural health monitoring.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) has become a powerful data acquisition technique for high-resolution high-accuracy topographic and morphological studies. Conventional static TLS surveys require setting up numerous reflectors (tie points) in the field for point clouds registration and georeferencing. To reduce surveying time and simplify field operational tasks, we have developed a rapid TLS surveying method that requires only one reflector in the field. The method allows direct georeferencing of point clouds from individual scans to an East−North−Height (ENH) coordinate system tied to a stable geodetic reference frame. TLS datasets collected at a segment of the beach−dune−wetland area in Freeport, Texas, USA are used to evaluate the performance of the rapid surveying method by comparing with kinematic GPS measurements. The rapid surveying method uses two GPS units mounted on the scanner and a reflector for calculating the northing angle of the scanner’s own coordinate system (SOCS). The Online Positioning User Service (OPUS) is recommended for GPS data processing. According to this study, OPUS Rapid-Static (OPUS-RS) solutions retain 1−2 cm root mean square (RMS) accuracy in the horizontal directions and 2−3 cm accuracy in the vertical direction for static observational sessions of approximately 30 min in the coastal region of Texas, USA. The rapid TLS surveys can achieve an elevation accuracy (RMS) of approximately 3−5 cm for georeferenced points and 2−3 cm for digital elevation models (DEMs). The elevation errors superimposed into the TLS surveying points roughly fit a normal distribution. The proposed TLS surveying method is particularly useful for morphological mapping over time in coastal regions, where strong wind and soft sand prohibit reflectors from remaining strictly stable for a long period. The theories and results presented in this paper are beneficial to researchers who frequently utilize TLS datasets in their research, but do not have opportunities to be involved in field data acquisition.

The Long Point Fault is one of the most active urban faults in Houston, Texas, which belong to a complex system of normal growth faults along the Texas Gulf Coast. To assess the activity of the Long Point Fault, a GPS array with 12 permanent stations was installed along the two sides of the 16-km-long fault scarp in 2013. GPS datasets were processed with the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) and Double-Difference (DD) methods. The daily PPP solutions with respect to the International Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Reference Frame 2014 (IGS14) were converted to the Stable Houston Reference Frame (Houston16). The six-year continuous GPS observations indicate that the Long Point Fault is currently inactive, with the rates of down-dip-slip and along-strike-slip being below 1 mm/year. The Long Point Fault area is experiencing moderate subsidence varying from 5 to 11 mm/year and a coherent horizontal movement towards the northwest at a rate of approximately 2 to 4 mm/year. The horizontal movement is induced by the subsidence bowl that has been developing since the 1980s in the Jersey Village area. Current surficial damages in the Long Point Fault area are more likely caused by ongoing uneven subsidence and its induced horizontal strains, as well as the significant seasonal ground deformation, rather than deep-seated or tectonic-controlled fault movements. The results from this study suggest a cause-and-effect relationship between groundwater withdrawals and local faulting, which is pertinent to plans for future urban development, use of groundwater resources, and minimization of urban geological hazards.

We have developed a Stable Caribbean Reference Frame 2018 (CARIB18) using long-term continuous observations from 18 continuously operating Global Positioning System (GPS) stations fixed on the margins of the stable portion of the Caribbean plate. The frame stability of CARIB18 is approximately 0.7 mm/year in the horizontal direction and 0.9 mm/year in the vertical direction. A method that employs a total of seven parameters for transforming positional time series from a global reference frame (IGS14) to a regional reference frame is introduced. The major products from this study include the seven parameters for realizing CARIB18 coordinates and three-component site velocities of 250 continuous GPS stations (>3 years) with respect to CARIB18. Geological hazard monitoring using GPS has traditionally been performed using the carrier-phase differential method that requires single or multiple reference stations to be simultaneously operated in the field. CARIB18 allows for precise geological hazard monitoring using stand-alone GPS, which substantially reduces field costs and simplifies logistics for long-term geological hazard monitoring. Applications of CARIB18 in plate motion, post-seismic, and volcano monitoring and research are demonstrated in this article. The regional reference frame will be periodically updated every few years with more reference stations and longer periods of observations to mitigate the degradation of the frame over time and will be synchronized with the updates of the International GNSS Service (IGS) IGS reference frame.

Multi-temporal airborne laser scanning (ALS) surveys have become a prime consideration for detecting landslide movements and evaluating landslide risk in mountain areas. The minimum elevation change (or detectability) that can be detected by repeated ALS surveys has become a critical threshold for landslide researchers and engineers to decide if ALS is a capable tool for detecting targeted landslides and arranging the minimum time span between two scans if ALS is a choice. The National Center for Airborne Laser Mapping (NCALM) at the University of Houston conducted three repeated ALS surveys at the Slumgullion landslide site in Colorado, U.S. over one week in July of 2015. These repeated ALS surveys provide valuable datasets for evaluating the vertical detectability of multi-temporal ALS surveys in a typical mountain area. According to this study, the difference of digital elevation models (DDEM) derived from ALS has the ability of detecting a minimum elevation change of 5 cm over flatter and moderately rugged terrain areas (slope < 20 degrees) and a minimum of a 10-cm elevation change over rugged terrain areas (20 degrees < slope < 40 degrees). However, the DDEM values over highly rugged terrain areas (slope > 40 degrees), such as cliff and landslide scarps, should be interpolated with caution. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) surveys were also performed at the middle portion of the landslide area for assessing the accuracy of ALS datasets. The accuracy of ALS varies from approximately one decimeter (~10 cm) to one foot (~30 cm) depending on the roughness of terrain surface and vegetation coverage (point density). The detectability and accuracy estimates of ALS measurements obtained from the case study could be used as a reference for estimating the performance of modern ALS in mountain areas with similar topography and vegetation coverage.

A new approach for the partial eigenvalue and eigenstructure assignment of undamped vibrating systems is developed. This approach deals with the constant output feedback control with the collocated actuator and sensor configuration, and the output matrix is also considered as a design parameter. It only needs those few eigenpairs to be assigned as well as mass and stiffness matrices of the open-loop vibration system and is easy to implement. In addition, this approach preserves symmetry of the systems. Numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach.

St. Croix is located inside the sweep of the Lesser Antilles arc and near the southeastern edge of the Greater Antillean ridge. It is separated from the Puerto Rico and the Northern Virgin Islands (PRNVI) block by the Virgin Islands basin. Recent seismic activities demonstrate that the Virgin Islands basin is tectonically active. A better understanding of fault activities in the basin would improve seismic hazard assessment in this region. This study illustrates out a detailed way of deriving relative motion between St. Croix and the PRNVI block using current GPS geodesy infrastructure in the PRVI region. The local geodesy infrastructure includes over 20 continuous GPS stations and a Stable PRNVI Reference Frame (SPRNVIRF). Twenty-year continuous GPS observations (1995–2014) on St. Croix indicate that the island is presently moving away from the PRNVI block toward the southeast (S55°E) at a steady rate of 1.7 mm/year. The velocity vector can be decomposed into two 1.2 mm/year components along the long-axis and short-axis directions of the rhomboidal Virgin Islands basin. Quantitative results indicate that the Virgin Islands basin presently experiences left-lateral motion in a nearly east-west direction and extension in a nearly north-south direction.

Long-term continuous groundwater level and land subsidence monitoring in the Houston-Galveston area indicates that, during the past two decades (1993–2012), the groundwater head has been increasing and the overall land subsidence rate has been decreasing. Assuming that the hydraulic head in the aquifer will reach or exceed the preconsolidation level in the near future, will subsidence in the Houston-Galveston area eventually cease? The key to answer this question is to identify if there is deep-seated subsidence in this area. This study investigated the recent subsidence observed at different depths in the Houston-Galveston area. The subsidence was recorded by using 13 borehole extensometers and 76 GPS antennas. Four of the GPS antennas are mounted on the deep-anchored inner pipes of borehole extensometers. We conclude that recent subsidence (1993–2012) in the Houston-Galveston area was dominated by the compaction of sediments within 600 m below the land surface. Depending on the location of specific sites, the compaction occurred within the Chicot aquifer and part or all of the Evangeline aquifer. No measurable compaction was observed within the Jasper aquifer or within deeper strata. Deep-seated subsidence is not likely occurring in the Houston-Galveston area.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) exposure level in human is negatively correlated with bone density according to the epidemiological research. Our study is aim to investigate the effects and mechanisms of PFOA on osteoblastic bone formation and osteoclastic bone resorption. Primary osteoblasts were isolated from the calvaria of newborn rats, and the cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and bone nodule formation were detected after 1,10, and 100 μmol/L PFOA treateatment for 24 h.The osteoclasts model were differentiation from bone marrow monocyte, which induced by Macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and Nuclear factor κB receptor-activating factor ligand (RANKL), and the effects on cell viability, anti-tartaric acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity, and bone resorption pit formation were investigated. The expression of OPG and RANKL proteins in osteoblasts were conducted by Western blot. The results show that PFOA at the concentration of 1 μmol/L and 10 μmol/L can promote osteoblast proliferation, but has no effect on ALP activity and bone nodule formation. 100 μmol/L PFOA can significantly inhibit cell proliferation, ALP activity, and bone nodule formation, as well as the proportion of OPG/RANKL protein expression. PFOA has no effect on osteoclast viability, and 10 μmol/L and 100 μmol/L PFOA can significantly inhibit the TRAP activity and the area of bone resorption pits. The conclusion can be draw that high concentration of PFOA can inhibit the bone formation of osteoblasts by suppressing WNT pathway and promote osteoclast bone resorption by inhibiting the OPG/RANKL/RANK pathway.
